00:08a point in time where they were deeply unlucky as a baseball team and i i subscribe to the theory
00:13that we too often undercut the uh the impact of luck in sports obviously it's not easy to talk
00:20about luck it's not fun to talk about luck we want to have all the good things that happen
00:25with our sports teams be meaningful we want it to be that our teams are so smart and so good
00:31and they
00:31made these things happen but luck factors in and especially for an astros team that needs everything
00:36that they can get last night felt like a lucky team to some degree now they made their luck in
00:40some
00:41ways but buddy there was a few instances of them getting lucky and i'm wondering is this just one
00:45of 162 where luck happens at times or is this a tide turning where maybe just maybe we are getting
00:50the ball rolling towards the astros seeing the postseason well you know obviously nobody knows
00:55you don't know i don't know uh but it's certain something worth discussion discussing because this
01:00is something that the astros have been known to do uh when they were at their best now you mentioned
01:05uh you know are they just getting lucky i think there were some absolute just flat out lucky things
01:12that happened last night now is that just sort of a a hint of of just how they get to

01:19teams get those things or at least you know teams that are winning those games get those things but
01:23altube could have easily been thrown out uh you know it could it shouldn't have even gone really
01:28yes right there's that there's mike trout dropping a field that allows yordan to ultimately uh score
01:34a run and that gets you to tie back at three you mentioned the bunt earlier yeah well i don't

01:39don't think that was luck i think that guzman at third base is point shaving because why in the hell
01:43are you picking up that bump from bryce matthews it's a decent bunt but it looks like it's about to

01:49foul and bryce matthews runs it out i love that yeah there's no reason that a third baseman should
01:54pick that ball because it's not even like it was just going down the third base line you're not
01:56going to get him he could tell that hey this isn't this one is going to stay fair it looked

02:40i'm not gonna i'm not gonna lie man i thought he was blocking the plate like i thought that that
02:45went very well if they wanted to make the uh the the ruling that he was indeed blocking the play
02:50and it wasn't that the throw took him there that was one that they could have had then you have
02:54another run and now we're continuing to play baseball i do think that like that going the
02:57going the way of the astros was a good fortune moment that allows them to get this and credit
03:01to bryce matthews uh but the the throw could not have been more perfectly placed and and so that
03:08i don't know if you want to call that luck or just a really really he's not a natural outfielder
03:12and he threw an absolute rope that was perfect right and so you know however you want to judge
03:18that there are a lot of things that that you can even go back to to how the game started
03:22with uh
03:23spencer eric getty kind of gave it up a little bit then you know kind of ring you know wriggled
03:27out
03:27trouble yeah yeah that kind of thing no and i want to be clear in this when i bring up
03:31luck i don't
03:32and this is the tough thing about talking about luck is it makes it seem like you're invalidating
03:36right the good things that happen i think that you need those in tandem with the good things that
03:40you do that bryce matthews throw wasn't was an absolute rope yeah excellent job by a converted
03:45outfielder i love that i'm not trying to take that away from us spencer eric getty again this is this
03:50is the thing that actually i felt better about this outing than i thought that i would have seeing him
03:54in what was the second inning when it's all feeling like it's falling apart this is what good pitchers do
03:58right good pitchers you're right it's not that they're always going to be perfect it's that when it
04:02goes bad they can rein it back in in a way where other people let go of the rope yeah
04:06and you saw that
04:06with spencer eric getty where he ultimately makes it pretty damn deep into this game when at one
04:10point it looked like he might not make it through the second inning right so but all things being
04:14considered hey you know they they got a win and and uh it was against the team that i gotta
04:20tell you
04:20you know flipping back and forth from uh the finals game there were moments there where i just thought
04:25okay well you know now they're just falling flat because they did look flat for long stretches here
04:29yeah no for sure and i guess this is the problem with the luck argument because i do hope that
04:34this is
04:35a turn of luck for them where now they're going to get the better side of the coin here in
04:40various
04:40different ways whether it's batted balls in play whether it's uh whether it's you know um mike burrows
04:45not sending so many pitches or not having so many pitches sent outside of their yard right those i do
04:51like the lack of luck is starting to show up in injury situations because you get lamont way jr a
04:58dude who
04:58just recently uh reached the team and had been you know looking pretty good for you both defensively and
05:03offensively lead this game seemingly with an injury taylor trammell is taken out no i guess that's not
05:08an injury but there was another injury circumstance that i'm missing in this moment there wasn't isak
05:12uh kind of uh you know not not quite himself at one point like there's a couple of instances where
05:17you're seeing the possibilities of injuries popping up and it really sucks because you're just now getting
05:23the reinforcements you're just getting whole and i would hate to see other parts uh you know other
05:27holes pop up as you plug well i mean that's kind of where we are right now with the astros
05:32because
05:32there are even guys even though some key guys are coming back uh they they're just playing right now
05:37with so many players they're piecing together too many things anyway so you're gonna have that i mean
05:42you just absolutely are oh and then i forgot one more thing that feels a little lucky how about
05:46bringing out brian to bring you in the 10th and not smiting you not hitting you in the how did
05:49we
05:50forget that and and he gave up a single he gave up a single that ultimately wasn't out with the
05:55runner on
05:55first yeah like you went from you went from a ghost runner or whatever uh automatic runner on second
06:01to an out and a man on first and it wasn't because he made a good pitch no it was
06:05a rope right up the
06:06middle uh or left center or whatever it was but uh no you know you you take it especially as
06:12we talked
06:12about yesterday you got to win at least four out of five of these it does feel like that you
06:16really
06:16did that would have been a tough tough loss yeah so um i don't know like again you're right i
06:20don't
06:20know if the answer is definitively that they are lucky but the idea that i can ask that question it
06:25feels like it might be in the affirmative is inherently a good thing and maybe just maybe
06:31i'd have luck to gotten this one one of 162 even if we don't have to push it over to
06:34other games that
06:35are coming because you need these right we talked about this yesterday we've talked about this before
06:40the margins are so very thin and you dropped some of these types of games earlier on in the season
06:44you need to get those back and this was one of those get those back moments because it very well
06:48could have been that you lose a game you drop more stand uh more uh i guess uh standing when
06:54it comes to
06:54um the you know the al west and the al uh wild card race that's not the case like thankfully
07:00you got
07:00a victory here and i actually funny enough did not look at what ultimately happened around the league
07:05because i was just happy to get it and yeah a lot of these other teams you're competing with actually
07:09got wins the mariners got a win the rangers got a win but ultimately like you just got to stack
07:13them
07:13right we're still far enough out that you just got to stack these wins and hope that they start
07:16coming back to you but at the very least two and a half games back of a wild card right
07:19you're you're
07:20keep yourself a little bit closer just by getting these wins even if you got a hooker by crook
07:23and interestingly good matchup tonight uh their best pitcher i think right now uh walbert urania
07:29uh is pitching so it should be another good one against kaiway tang yeah you sure hope that that
07:34luck carries on because kaiway tang if we're talking about in your rotation the dudes who
07:38are susceptible to luck going one way or another spencer or getty is not one of those right i feel
07:44like he makes his luck in some ways with his with his talent kaiway tang feels like he's on in
07:48that
07:48place where ingo one way or the other dependent on the luck uh i guess so i mean because he's
07:54a
07:54reliever that is just really trying to to get back into the starting rotation but he's been pretty solid
