00:00It's one of the greatest soccer rivalries between countries on the world stage because
00:04of unruly fan behavior, fights on the pitch, and just overall bad blood.
00:10You throw in political issues surrounding Mexico-US relations, it's more than just a
00:16soccer match when these two countries meet.
00:24So let's give you guys a quick history lesson on a soccer culture rivalry between neighboring
00:31countries that go back to 1934.
00:34Yeah, 1934 was the first time these two sides faced off on the pitch.
00:40It was a qualifying match in Italy for the final spot in the 1934 FIFA World Cup.
00:46The U.S. won that inaugural match 4-2, but after that, it was all Mexico and bad blood
00:53ever since.
00:55El Tri went on to go unbeaten in the next 24 matches with 21 wins and 3 draws.
01:01In fact, the U.S. didn't win another game against them until 46 years later in 1980 when they
01:09won a 1982 World Cup qualifier 2-1 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
01:15But then things started to slightly change for the Americans in the 90s.
01:20They were able to put together a pair of gritty and notable wins like the CONCACAF Gold Cup
01:25in 1991 and the 1995 Copa America.
01:30But all in all, Mexico still ruled that decade with 5 wins to 3 alongside 6 draws.
01:36But fast forward to the early 2000s, where from 2000 to 2014, the United States took back some
01:44respect and control of the rivalry.
01:473-2-0 victories in home World Cup qualifiers by the Americans led to U.S. fans taunting their
01:54rivals by chanting, Dos Acero, 2-2-0.
01:58In total, from 2000 to 2014, USA racked up 12 wins to Mexico's 5 with 5 draws.
02:06But it's from 2021 to present day that the rivalry turned up the heat both on and off the pitch.
02:15The U.S. won the 2021 CONCACAF Nations League final, the Gold Cup final, and beat them again
02:23in the 2022 World Cup qualifier by the infamous Dos Acero score.
02:28That was the first three-game winning streak by the U.S. over Mexico in their history, and
02:35it looked like the Americans had El Tri on the ropes.
02:38But no one will forget the mayhem at the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League finals.
02:45The U.S. won 3-0 in a game that had four red cards and 10 yellow cards for violent
02:51behavior
02:52on both sides.
02:53It got so physical that Weston McKinney had his shirt ripped off by Mexican players, and
02:59the match was called eight minutes into what were supposed to be 12 minutes of stoppage
03:04time at the referee's discretion.
03:06The last time these two teams faced off with each other was the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup final,
03:13when Mexico came back to win that 2-1.
03:16Overall, these countries have met 79 times, with Mexico leading the series 38-17-24, with
03:25149 goals for Mexico and 93 for the United States.
03:30Now, in some of the more historic matches, we've seen over 100,000 fans show up at Mexico's
03:38Estadio Azteca, and over 90,000 fans at the Rose Bowl in L.A.
03:44The players go at it on the pitch, and L.T. and the American Outlaws, each country's
03:50supporter clubs, they clash in the stands.
03:52This is more than just a rivalry.
03:55Unfortunately, these two countries won't see each other in this summer's World Cup unless
04:00they meet in the knockout rounds.
04:02But if they do, history has shown us to prepare for more than just a soccer match, because
04:08culture, pride, fandom, and politics all collide on the pitch.
