00:00Speaking from New York, Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang chair Zheng Liwen says that her
00:05trip to the U.S. is a mission of peace.
00:08It's a similar message that she conveyed in early April when she visited Beijing and met
00:13with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
00:16About two months after Zheng's trip to China, she's now in the U.S.
00:20She's already visited San Francisco and Boston before arriving here in New York.
00:26On Sunday, hundreds of supporters threw a banquet to welcome her.
00:29In a roughly half-hour speech, Zheng told attendees that because she's able to speak with both
00:35Chinese and American leadership, her party can help Taiwan navigate its complex geopolitical
00:41position in the world.
00:43She also played up the importance that the overseas community plays in fostering ties.
00:47we must customize Taiwan...
00:50Taiwan is not to be the next- Snap-up States.

01:10We must demodulate Taiwan, critiques Taiwan there are no other International
01:19In her speech, Chung said that under KMT President Ma Ying-jeou, Taiwan enjoyed war
01:24more ties with China.
01:26She says now that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party has been in power for the past 10 years,
01:31all that goodwill has been undone.
01:33China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out taking the island by
01:38force.
01:39China has refused high-level communication with Taiwan's DPP administration because it
01:44views the party as separatists.
01:47Chung has met with city and state officials during her time in the U.S. so far.
01:52After New York, she's scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C., where she's expected to meet
01:56with federal officials and lawmakers.
01:59So she's going to be with the people from the administration.
02:03And all these meetings, she's going to bring the same kind of a message.
02:09I think it's very important for them to hear directly from Chie Wen-men-zhen because,
02:16be very frankly, there's been a lot of misconceptions of her views, saying that she's, you know,
02:25sort of sided with another side, which is totally not true.
02:29Back in Taipei, the DPP has criticized Chung's comments, saying she's echoing rhetoric commonly
02:35used by Chinese officials.
02:37We've seen that Chung's 15-day trip to the United States is drawing intense attention in Taipei,
02:55Washington, and Beijing.
02:57While here in New York, Chung is scheduled to meet with business leaders and think tanks.
03:02She'll also give speeches at the Asia Society and Columbia University.
03:07While she's received a warm welcome here from supporters, the main event of her trip to the
03:12U.S. awaits in Washington, D.C.
