Six months have passed since the mysterious murder of Thomas P. Manning (Sam Flint), an affluent man whose body was discovered in a locked room. The police have gotten no closer to solving the case or to uncovering the meaning of the particular chess pieces found in the victim's hand. Now, prompted by the release of a scandalous book about her father's demise, Leah Manning (Joan Woodbury) has hired eccentric detective Charlie Chan (Sidney Toler) to uncover the curious truth.

00:16:18Here we are, Mr. Chen.
00:16:51What am I doing, Father Neal?
00:17:02Thank you, sir.
00:17:05There's a thousand other places I'd rather be in than here.
00:17:08What are you here for, Father?
00:17:11I'm here for information concerning Manning murder.
00:17:14Looks like very poor information bureau.
00:17:18Man was supposed to meet me here.
00:17:21Oh.
00:17:24It's okay, Father. He's still waiting.
00:17:27But he's dead.
00:17:38He's strangled.
00:17:41Short time, I hope.
00:17:52Oh. Lieutenant Detective Harvey Dennis.
00:17:56That's what we need, a detective.
00:17:59Not Lieutenant, Mr. Chen. Not since the Manning case.
00:18:03Just an ordinary member of the Homicide Squad.
00:18:06I knew your father very well.
00:18:08Worked with him years ago.
00:18:09You resemble him greatly.
00:18:11Harvey Dennis.
00:18:12He's the detective that Miss Manning told us about.
00:18:14Have a chair.
00:18:16Bottleneck of progress is number three son, Tommy.
00:18:20It's our telephone headquarters that you were about to reopen the case, Mr. Chen.
00:18:24It's no use.
00:18:26We worked on it for six months and got nowhere.
00:18:28Perhaps I worked a little while and get somewhere.
00:18:31Excuse.
00:18:33Would like to ask a question.
00:18:35Why you come here now?
00:18:38Tell you the truth, Mr. Chen.
00:18:40I've been training you ever since I heard you were going to reopen this case.
00:18:44As a matter of fact, I want to work on it with you.
00:18:47Glad to have you with us, Mr. Dennis.
00:18:48Wish could say same for you.
00:18:51I've already learned something.
00:18:54I came here for information regarding Manning's murder.
00:18:58And I find this.
00:19:03Kirk Casas.
00:19:05What's happened?
00:19:06What's he got to do with the Manning case?
00:19:08You know Deadman?
00:19:09Sure.
00:19:10He specializes in stolen goods.
00:19:13Particularly gems.
00:19:18Now I don't run out of wisdom.
00:19:20Anyway, I can get some music.
00:19:27Let's go.
00:19:28Turn out your lights.
00:19:30Turn them out.
00:19:32Are you afraid?
00:19:34Are you kidding?
00:19:38I wonder why Deadman keeps so much bread?
00:19:44Stale. Hard as a rock.
00:19:47Stale, hard, and very heavy.
00:19:58Stale, hard, and very heavy.
00:19:59Bread very strangely cut.
00:20:07Mr. Chan, here's another one.
00:20:18You know?
00:20:19Maybe that chain ain't such bad company after all.
00:20:23I don't know, sir.
00:20:25Wrap all three for evidence.
00:20:27Yes, sir.
00:20:34What's keeping you all so long?
00:20:35It's all over.
00:20:37Look, they're behind the table.
00:20:38All over?
00:20:40Behind the table?
00:20:42I wonder what he's talking about.
00:20:50Murder?
00:20:51Yep.
00:20:52I knew it.
00:20:53Meet a chair in your middle of the murder.
00:20:55Maybe I was wrong after all.
00:21:05You're waiting for someone?
00:21:07Yes, sir.
00:21:08As a matter of fact, I've been...
00:21:10How come you're walking around?
00:21:12Don't you know you're dead?
00:21:18I'm dead.
00:21:19A dead man.
00:21:20He's outside, but he ain't dead.
00:21:22Dead man, still here, still dead.
00:21:31Still dead.
00:21:34Still here, still dead.
00:21:41There's still a spot, I've got corpses in front of my eyes.
00:21:55Like the police, you don't believe my book.
00:21:59You're wrong.
00:22:01Think you can pick up another suspect?
00:22:04Can't.
00:22:05If your book solved Manning's case, why Mrs. Manning not under arrest?
00:22:11Not enough technical evidence.
00:22:13Dennis here was in charge of the case.
00:22:16He took out time to fall in love with the daughter of the house,
00:22:18and so he didn't find all the evidence.
00:22:21You pull that too often, Rednick.
00:22:23If you do it once more, so help me, I...
00:22:25Please, please.
00:22:27Bull in China's shop is gentle creature compared to detective
00:22:31who makes past that man wearing glasses.
00:22:35Why do you think Mrs. Manning committed crime?
00:22:39Nobody else could have done.
00:22:41In your book, you explain everything so easily,
00:22:44except what became a murder gun.
00:22:47I've always had my own ideas on what happened to that gun.
00:22:50Yes, you've had your ideas.
00:22:53And you've talked about them too.
00:22:55But now get this, and for the last time,
00:22:57I never found that gun.
00:22:59Now wait.
00:23:00I fell in love.
00:23:02Sure.
00:23:03I'm still that way.
00:23:04But I'm still a detective too.
00:23:06I searched that house from top to bottom.
00:23:09There was no .38 in it.
00:23:11If my book is wrong, then the Manning case cannot be solved.
00:23:16It defies it.
00:23:18That's what you think.
00:23:19When Pop takes the case, Pop goes the case.
00:23:22What?
00:23:23Peculiar trait in Chan family.
00:23:25Children all think Pop pretty good.
00:23:28I'm speaking as an expert criminology.
00:23:32Expert is merely a man who make quick decision.
00:23:36And is sometimes right.
00:23:39I'll bet you 10 to 1 I'm right on the Manning case,
00:23:42and you're wrong.
00:23:4410 to 1?
00:23:46Excuse, please, while I check Chan family finances.
00:23:50Take them, Pop.
00:23:51Mom said everyone in the Chan family is working.
00:23:54And now we have more money than brains.
00:23:56I'm not gambling man, but 10 to 1, not to be sneered at.
00:24:01If I am wrong, I will write check for $2,000 to Chinese war relief.
00:24:06But if I am right...
00:24:08If you're right, I'll send the same organization a check for $20,000.
00:24:16Uh, Recknick, I'm a witness to this.
00:24:20Oh, you hear about man named Kazos?
00:24:26Murdered last night?
00:24:27Yes, I read about it this morning.
00:24:31Strangled.
00:24:33Murderer wore gloves.
00:24:35Yeah, I figured as much.
00:24:37When the police said that the throat bruises were no use as evidence.
00:24:41Figured he wore a tight-fitting glove.
00:24:43Uh, like that.
00:24:45You always wear gloves?
00:24:47Ever since I burnt my hand badly some years ago.
00:24:51May interest you to know murderer of Thomas Manning.
00:24:56Also wore gloves.
00:24:58Thank you so much.
00:25:11Hello, Leah.
00:25:12Hello. Good morning, Mr. Chan.
00:25:14Happy to see you again, Miss Manning.
00:25:16This is the study where it happened.
00:25:32I think I do a little investigating of my own.
00:25:35Dr. Recknick's book, surprisingly accurate in describing scene of crime.
00:25:40Too accurate to be pleasant, Mr. Chan.
00:25:43Doctor, a visit in this room here?
00:25:46Once.
00:25:47He came here the day after the killing with the inspector.
00:25:50We had access to the files and all the photographs.
00:26:15He came here.
00:26:16Hey, Pop.
00:26:16They're the same as...
00:26:19According to book, um...
00:26:22Secret panels should be here.
00:26:34My gosh, Pop. Are you a mind reader?
00:26:37If mine's not too small.
00:26:44Mrs. Manning's room is just above us.
00:26:46At the head of the stairs.
00:26:48Police find nothing here?
00:26:50Only the prints of Mrs. Manning.
00:26:52Leah and Carolyn.
00:26:54On the handrails.
00:26:58Harvey.
00:26:59Harvey, that's her mother's room.
00:27:06I won't have it.
00:27:07You understand?
00:27:08I was your husband's partner.
00:27:09And the mystery of his death nearly ruined my business.
00:27:12I want no one.
00:27:13Chinese detective or otherwise.
00:27:15Reopening that case.
00:27:17Please, Mr. Deacon.
00:27:18Let the chair alone.
00:27:19No.
00:27:21What's the matter, Mother?
00:27:22Did you bring Chan into this case?
00:27:24I did.
00:27:25I won't have it.
00:27:26I want the case dropped completely.
00:27:28Why?
00:27:34Excuse me, please.
00:27:36I am Charlie Chan at your service.
00:27:38You wish investigation halted?
00:27:40She does.
00:27:42You will do as Leah wishes, if you please, Mr. Chan.
00:27:44Thank you so much.
00:27:46Now you will explain why you wish Manning's case dropped?
00:27:55Excuse.
00:28:01Wait, please.
00:28:09You will explain why you wish the mystery of Thomas Manning's death to remain unsolved?
00:28:15I am trying to keep my business from being ruined by more bad publicity.
00:28:20That is excellent diamond.
00:28:23Tough.
00:28:27I don't get it, Pop.
00:28:30Fear you are a weak limb, to which no family tree may point with pride.
00:28:58I don't get it.
00:29:00I don't get it.
00:29:02I don't get it.
00:29:10I don't get it.
00:29:21Hey, Pop.
00:29:22What about those little statues?
00:29:24They are the same as those we found at Carzo's place.
00:29:27You are smart enough to keep eyes open?
00:29:30You bet.
00:29:31Do likewise.
00:29:32Keep mouth shut.
00:29:38Nothing changed in study since night of murder?
00:29:41Nothing, Mr. Chan.
00:29:43When the police finished in there, we kept the study locked.
00:29:46In his book, Dr. Recknick claims your mother's second marriage was an unhappy one.
00:29:52He married my mother for her money.
00:29:53If she had been happy, it would have made no difference.
00:29:55But when he died, I was almost glad.
00:29:58You're bothered by nuns and a half.
00:30:04Who did you want to get in there?
00:30:08You didn't know who's going to be at work.
00:30:17Well, don't do you want to try and get out of your house together?
00:30:27I'm not sure what I fred you.
00:30:28I don't trust that rent-nigger as far as I can see him might be.
00:30:32You put two and two together and get results bigger than national debt.
00:30:37Well, what are you laughing at?
00:30:39Because I hear two meters ticking.
00:30:41It must be inflation.
00:30:42Two meters?
00:30:44I don't hear anything.
00:30:46Turn into that alley, quick.
00:30:47Yes, sir.
00:30:55Quick, get out.
00:31:10Hey, just like the 4th of July.
00:31:12That was my cab.
00:31:14We'll need new cab in about half-hour.
00:31:17You think the Army would at least loan me a tank?
00:31:19Come.
00:31:30Hey, you want to rent your bike to three passengers?
00:31:33What?
00:31:34Yeah.
00:31:34You see, Tommy, he can sit here, and I'll pedal, and Mr. Chan...
00:31:40No.
00:31:43Just a second.
00:31:46To see you is always very great pleasure, your most honorable Wu Sung.
00:31:50But must confess, at this moment, I'm on hurried business visit.
00:31:58I hope you did not pay too much for my wretched work.
00:32:01Your work always most distinctive.
00:32:04I recognize it at once.
00:32:06That is why I am here.
00:32:08Your work, most honorable Wu Sung, always noted for great artistry, but also for secret compartments.
00:32:17Of course.
00:32:18Of course.

00:32:28Look.
00:32:32Glass.
00:32:33There's been a mistake somewhere.
00:32:35Most valuable mistake.
00:32:37This is diamond.
00:32:44Look.
00:32:45Here's another one.
00:32:51These must be stolen property.
00:32:54Believe part of famous Coulinard collection stolen a year ago in Chicago.
00:33:00Look, Pop.
00:33:01Here's some more just like them.
00:33:02And here's one of a cat.

00:33:42Excuse.
00:33:43Uh, you have record of those who purchased statues?
00:33:47Of course.
00:33:58All of them were sold to Sea Thai Art Company, a small firm with headquarters at Shore End Pier.
00:34:06Fleet Pier now closed for duration of war.
00:34:09Many thanks for very great assistance.
00:34:12Hey, why are we going anyway?
00:34:14To Shore End Pier.
00:34:15To investigate an important case.

00:34:18You can be my assistant.
00:34:20Now you cooking with gas.
00:34:22What kind of case is it?
00:34:24It ain't no murder case, I hope.
00:34:25Well, murder is just a sideline in this case.
00:34:27Oh, well, if that's all it is, I ain't got nothing to worry about.
00:34:30Boy, you is crazy.
00:34:33So am I.
00:34:33Being a man.
00:34:36Well, I'm okay.
00:34:44Police deduce nothing from wrong figure of Bishop left on chessboard?
00:34:50Nothing.
00:34:53Bishop.
00:34:55Bishop.
00:35:10Well, this is it, the Seatide Art Company.

00:35:34Hey, did we come all the way out here just to see this?
00:35:38Well, I guess we won't find any clues here.
00:35:41This investigation was short and snappy.
00:35:48Uh, glad to see you again, sir.
00:35:53Where am I, Sven?
00:35:57What's the matter?
00:35:57The dead man, he's on the loose again.
00:35:59Oh, you're silly.

00:36:17You're right, Birmingham.
00:36:18Now, he's a ghost.
00:36:19Do you believe me now?
00:36:20Do you believe me now?

00:37:01If you leave without solving the case, what do we do then?
00:37:05You get married.
00:37:10Mr. Chan, with the threat of gossip hanging over us, we couldn't possibly do that.
00:37:13Fear of future is wrong for young people in love.
00:37:17You should get married and raise large family.
00:37:21Once you have large family, all other troubles mean nothing.
00:37:25Hey, that's a swell idea.
00:37:27What?
00:37:28Well, isn't it?
00:37:30Oh, darling.

00:38:26No, that's wrong.
00:38:27Excuse.

00:44:34You wish to speak with me?
00:44:36I was just wondering how you're coming along in your attempt to solve this case.
00:44:41Also wonder, same thing.
00:44:43Stuck already, huh?
00:44:45Never start anything unless I see end of road.

00:52:27Don't tell him anything, Pop.
00:52:29You see, third degree does not work.
00:52:32You haven't seen anything yet.
00:52:34Ah, let's wait.

00:52:57So I guess I'll see what it's like on the inside.
00:53:02I wonder what's keeping Chan.
00:53:03He said he'd be here by nine o'clock.
00:53:05He told Caroline he was going to the fun house
00:53:07on Shore Inn Pier.
00:53:10That's what puzzles me.

00:59:29Surprise party, continue.
00:59:31You two will be dead when they get here.
00:59:34I've heard the same before.
00:59:36But Charlie Chen's still alive and kicking.
00:59:40Hold it, you.
00:59:41Stop that moving.

01:00:13Your arrival saved me call for very necessary police.
01:00:18Have solved three murders with excellent aid of very fine assistance.
01:00:24Snap them on.
01:00:28What am I doing with these things?
01:00:31What about Karzas?
01:00:33Were there two of them?
01:00:35This one, Carl Karzas.
01:00:37Twin brother of murdered Kurt Karzas.
01:00:41Gannett.
01:00:42Catelyn.
01:00:43Can arrest all for grand larceny and murder.
01:00:46You can't prove that.
01:00:48Most easily.
01:00:50But you spoke of three murders.
01:00:51Murder of Kurt Karzas, Webster Deacon, and Thomas Manning.
01:00:55All work of these people have found final proof.
01:01:04When you first attacked me, I hide diamond excuse.
01:01:13In your pocket.
01:01:16I also find murder gloves.
01:01:19Worn by strangler and killer of Thomas Manning.
01:01:22They're not mine.
01:01:23They're not mine.
01:01:24They belong to Deacon.
01:01:24Exactly.
01:01:25But you wore them to strangle Deacon.
01:01:30Take them away.
01:01:32All right, boys.
01:01:33Go.
01:01:36Mr. Chen, you said those men killed my stepfather.
01:01:40Thomas Manning and his business partner, Webster Deacon,
01:01:44were connected with original theft of Kalanor Diamond.
01:01:48And Manning was a crook.
01:01:50But he double-crossed his business partner
01:01:53and stole diamond for himself.
01:01:55Oh, then that was the motive for the murder.
01:01:57Mr. Chen, how did you find all these things out?
01:02:00That's what I'd like to know.
01:02:01Well, you see, Lieutenant...
01:02:03Not Lieutenant, remember Mr. Chen?
01:02:05But you'll be Lieutenant again, maybe.
01:02:08Perhaps Captain, for solving celebrated Manning case.
01:02:12I had nothing to do.
01:02:13This is how you did it.
01:02:16Observe.
01:02:20This is gun that killed Thomas Manning.
01:02:24I take it tonight from Katherine.
01:02:26But initials on gun are W.D.
01:02:30Webster Deacon.
01:02:31Why, that means Deacon killed Manning.
01:02:34And Manning leave on chessboard clue to police who killed him.
01:02:40What?
01:02:41Lone figure of bishop.
01:02:43Oh, but there was no one by the name of...
01:02:44Leah.
01:02:46Of course.
01:02:47That lone figure, that lone chess man, was a bishop.
01:02:50Don't you see?
01:02:51In other words, a church officer.
01:02:53And Deacon is same thing.
01:02:56Deacon, wearing gloves, locked study door,
01:03:00and killed Thomas Manning.
01:03:02He then hides in secret stairway.
01:03:04When you, your mother, and Caroline enter room, Deacon ascended secret stairway through your mother's bedroom and out front door.
01:03:14Later, he killed Karsos because Karsos about ready to inform.
01:03:20Yes, but why was Deacon himself murdered?
01:03:23Because Deacon, now thoroughly frightened, was leading me here to real criminals.
01:03:30So, Dr. Recknick was wrong.
01:03:34When you see him, you will please say he must write new book in big hurry.
01:03:39Also, must send check for $20,000 to Chinese war relief in same big hurry.

01:03:55Goodbye.
01:03:58Where is that answer?
01:03:59Wherever there's a way in, there must be a way out.
01:04:02Gosh, Pop, in spite of his book, Recknick was not the killer at all, huh?
01:04:07You are like a turtle.
01:04:09After everything all over, you stick head out and find truth right under your very nose.
01:04:16Oh, this must be it.
01:04:19Uh-oh, my pillow ball again.
01:04:22Ah, quit.
