00:32We're going back to Las Vegas, Nevada for today's pay-per-view and we're going back
00:36to 1993. WrestleMania 9 taking place in Caesars Palace parking lot was a pretty unique WrestleMania
00:42thanks to its overall presentation, but unfortunately, this event also gets labelled as one of the
00:48worst WrestleManias of all time, some even say it's the very worst. My job isn't to
00:53sway your opinion at all and I do agree that it isn't the best mania out there, but I still
00:58get some enjoyment out of this show thanks to how it perfectly encapsulates that specific
01:02time period in the WWF, more so than other 1993 pay-per-views. Make no mistake about it though,
01:09business was down and wrestling wasn't as popular as it was even a year prior. While
01:14WrestleMania 9 is a very nostalgic event for those who watched it when they were kids,
01:18this is a time period the WWE would like to forget about.
01:21We've got the Hitman Bret Hart defending the WWF Championship against Royal Rumble winner
01:25Yokozuna in the main event. We've also got Money Incorporated defending the WWF Tag Team
01:30titles against the Mega Maniacs. The show opens up with Caesar and Cleopatra making their entrance
01:35with an elephant, something tells me that's not the real Caesar and Cleopatra by the way,
01:40and while Macho Man Randy Savage gets escorted to the commentary table while eating grapes,
01:44Bobby Heenan makes his entrance while riding a camel. Poor Bobby looks like he's having a real
01:49hard time up there but he makes it the ringside in one piece. Jim Ross makes his WWF debut at
01:54WrestleMania 9, no better way to debut than at WrestleMania while wearing a toga, and while
01:59Bobby Heenan gets his wits about him, we go to the ring for our first match, IC Champion
02:03Shawn Michaels defending the belt against Tatanka.
02:10Tatanka has two televised pinfall victories over the IC Champion but it looks like Shawn has
02:15other things on his mind, a debuting Luna Vachon follows him close by during his entrance while
02:20Sherry Martell comes the ringside following Tatanka. Sherry and Shawn's relationship broke
02:25down after an HBK vs Marty Jannetty match at the 1993 Royal Rumble. It appears that Michaels
02:30has brought along Luna for a little backup or maybe it's his new squeeze, who knows, but
02:35the bell rings and Tatanka stops a few single leg takedowns. Tatanka then bridges during a
02:40top wrist lock and Sherry cheers as HBK gets shoved to the mat, but she's not too amused
02:45when Shawn holds onto a side headlock, HBK uses the ropes to perform a takeover here.
02:50Tatanka stops another headlock takeover with a back suplex and we see a great spot next
02:55when Shawn jumps into an arm drag, HBK then gets drop kicked and Michaels takes the flare
03:00corner bump before getting chopped off the apron. We then have a standoff between Luna Vachon
03:04and Sensational Sherry. Strangely, it appears that Sherry might be protecting Shawn from
03:09Luna and even Jim Ross says this is a little confusing, must be nice having all these women
03:14fight over you though, they don't call him the heartbreak kid for nothing. Shawn gets
03:18back in the ring with a diving sunset flip that wasn't perfect but still absolutely passable,
03:23Tatanka replies with an inverted atomic drop followed by a single arm DDT, he then slows
03:28the match down while focusing on the arm and when Michaels tries a clothesline, he ends up
03:32hurting his own shoulder. So it's back down to the mat we go, and things then go from
03:36bad to worst when Shawn rams his shoulder into the ring post. Tatanka decides to keep it on
03:41the mat again which in turn keeps the crowd pretty quiet, but they do cheer when HBK takes
03:46a shoulder breaker. You can see Shawn directing the match from the mat when he tells his opponent
03:51to go for an elbow drop. Tatanka then begins firing up with a tomahawk chop, but he quickly
03:56gets put in his place with a superkick after coming off the top rope again. Shawn dumps his opponent
04:01out of the ring and again Sherry stops Luna from launching an attack, seems like Sherry
04:06just wants a clean fight between these two. The heartbreak kid delivers a clothesline from
04:10the apron before getting back in the ring to taunt his former valet, and Tatanka takes
04:14a swinging neck breaker and a drop kick before Michaels applies a wrestlemania sized chinlock.
04:19Shawn then tries an arm scissor pin combination but Tatanka kicks out, Tatanka replies with an
04:24electric chair drop but he misses a follow up elbow. Shawn then hits a few double x handles,
04:29but Tatanka's now hulking up, or he's Tatanka-ing up, I don't know. HBK hits the mat a few times
04:36before getting turned inside out with a big chop. A few pinfall attempts follow and we see this
04:41impressive power slam from Tatanka, it goes to the outside once again where Michaels misses a dive and
04:47he hits the ring steps. HBK then decides to pull the referee out of the ring and Tatanka thinks he
04:52has it won after hitting a Samoan drop. The referee decides to disqualify the IC champion instead,
04:58so Shawn loses the match but he keeps the IC title. The decision isn't a crowd pleaser, that's for sure,
05:04and it's a shame too because this match did have some good moments, those mainly being the top rope
05:09counters from both the champion and the challenger. After Shawn leaves, Luna attacks Sherry, Sherry takes a
05:16clothesline and a body slam before Luna runs back up the entranceway. Tatanka comes to the aid of Sherry
05:22Martell as the crowd cheer, and that is your Wrestlemania 9 opening match.
05:31Up next we have one of my favourite matches on this card, Rick and Scott Steiner vs the Hedge Frinkers.
05:37The Dogface Gremlin and the Big Bad Booty Daddy get interviewed by Mean Gene before the match. Scott says
05:42this may be the Steiner's first Wrestlemania but they're gonna make it one to remember, and Rick
05:46says he and Scott plan on making Julius Caesar proud by doing what they do best, wrestle.
05:51We've got Fatou and Scott Steiner starting this one off, and look at young Rikishi, what a handsome
05:56young fella. Scott performs an arm drag and when he gets shoved, he goes for a double leg takedown.
06:01Scott then counters a hip toss and when Fatou shoves him again, a fist fight breaks out. Big Poppa
06:06Pump gets the better of his opponent and Fatou falls victim to a Steiner line. Scotty finds himself in the
06:11wrong corner and Rick comes in to help his brother out. This exchange ends with Rick and Scott jumping
06:16off the same turnbuckle with a pair of clotheslines and the crowd make a lot of noise. We get Rick
06:21and
06:21Samu in the ring next and Rick takes a chop right across the throat. A corner clothesline from Samu
06:27seems to wake Rick up though as the Dogface Gremlin explodes out of the corner with a forearm. Scott then
06:32comes in with a double underhook powerbomb. Fatou tries to interfere but the big man gets dropkicked out
06:38of the ring, and we don't get a good shot of this next spot but it looks like Scott's head
06:42lands
06:43right on the apron after a stun gun attempt. On the outside, Affa hits Scott across the back with
06:48his giant bamboo cane, Scott also takes a body slam on the mat before Fatou tags in, Big Kish delivers
06:54a backbreaker and a diving headbutt before Samu comes back in with a spinning back kick, and here
07:00comes Fatou again with a knee to the midsection that sends Scotty back to the outside. We're building up to
07:05the hot tag quite well as Scott gets sent into the ring post, Big Papa Pump gets back in the
07:10ring
07:10where he tries to fight both head shrinkers in the corner and he fails after taking an eye poke.
07:14All Rick can do is watch on as his brother gets double teamed by the head shrinkers,
07:19in Luke, the second most devastating wrestling hold known to man, the deadly nerve pinch.
07:24The break finally comes when Samu misses a diving headbutt, Scott tags out and the Dogface Gremlin
07:29cleans house with backdrops, body slams and a few steiner lines for good measure. He then tries knocking the
07:35head shrinkers heads together and this doesn't work out too well, Rick then falls victim to a double
07:40forward Russian leg sweep, but when the head shrinkers set Rick up for the finish, the Dogface
07:44Gremlin pulls off an absolutely ridiculous power slam while sitting on Fatou's shoulders. I never
07:50get tired of seeing this move. Scott tags in, he takes Fatou out with an overhead belly to belly,
07:55and the match ends with Samu taking the Frankensteiner. The Steiner brothers win at Wrestlemania in a
08:00match that showed off some excellent offense from Rick and Scott.
08:06Doink vs Crush is our next match, one of the most infamous matches in the history of Wrestlemania.
08:11The evil Doink's been messing Crush around for a few weeks now, and after getting battered with
08:16Doink's fake arm, the big man's promise to get the last laugh at Wrestlemania. Doink says Crush
08:22might be seeing double vision by the time this one's all over. I don't want to go too in depth
08:27with the
08:27Crush and Doink history here because I plan on covering this rivalry in a future video,
08:32so let's just see what happened in Las Vegas. So here comes Crush, member of Demolition,
08:37member of the Nation of Domination, leader of the DOA, the dirty old assholes, member of the NWO
08:43black and white, and here comes Doink, member of the Rod Pack in Mid-South and a former lumberjack
08:49named Big Josh. Doink trolls his opponent on the outside, so Crush gives chase, or Joker takes a
08:57body slam and a ring post bump before getting sent in the ring, and Crush looks pretty pissed off as
09:02he backs Doink into the corner. Doink begs for mercy after getting choked, he gets sent to the
09:07opposite corner and he decides to leave the ring afterwards. On the outside, Doink tries to fight
09:12back but Crush gets the better of his opponent, and back in the ring, Doink takes a neckbreaker,
09:17a face stomp and a backbreaker. Crush gets Doink on the apron but our main man pulls off a neck
09:22snap
09:22before going to the top rope. The aerial offense is really lacking here but it still seems effective,
09:28so Doink tries again and yeah, it still looks like shit. Third time's a charm, right? Doink goes up
09:33again and no. You know, I think sometimes that even if you have no issues going to the top rope,
09:39that doesn't mean you should necessarily do it, not in this fashion anyway. Doink's piledriver manages
09:44to look both devastating and unspectacular at the same time, and when Doink goes upstairs again,
09:50never want to miss an opportunity, he ends up getting a boot in the face. Crush gets stunned
09:55after taking a chop and guess what Doink does next? Yeah, you guessed it, he goes for an aerial
10:00attack only this time he gets caught out with a power slam. Every mania mat so far has had this
10:06same spot but nothing's gonna beat Rick Steiner's effort. Doink then heads to the outside and he
10:11tries to crawl under the ring but Crush grabs him and back inside the ropes, Doink falls victim to the
10:16corner clutch. Doink makes it to the ropes but he also decides to take the referee out and while Crush
10:21is tending to the official, Doink again heads under the ring. Once more, Crush stops his opponent and
10:27he brings him back in for another corner clutch, but then another Doink runs into the ring and Bobby
10:34Heenan says this must be an illusion. Double Doinks at WrestleMania 9. The other Doink has that prosthetic
10:40arm and Crush gets smacked a few times with it. The two Doinks then mirror each other before laughing
10:45at the audience and the real Doink covers Crush for the pinfall win. The second Doink hides away
10:51under the ring and Bill Alfonso comes out to check where he disappeared to. There's no clown sightings
10:56underneath the apron so it's a complete mystery. Todd Pettengill asks some photographers if they saw the
11:02two Doinks and here's the answer he gets. Absolute batshit insanity here at WrestleMania, so bad it's
11:13legendary pure WrestleBollocks at its finest. The match may have sucked but the ending was definitely memorable.
11:26They say the Attitude Era was built upon the rise of the antihero in WWF. In Vince's own words, fans
11:33were
11:33getting tired of good guys vs bad guys. Well, even back in 1993, fans were prepared to cheer for a
11:40villain
11:40and this is evident in our next match, Razor Ramon vs Bob Backland. Razor was a heel walking into this
11:46one
11:47and he'd remain a heel when the match was over, for a little while anyway, but the fans chant Razor's
11:52name
11:52here while Bob Backland gets no reaction at all. Indeed, Razor Ramon had a lot more character than
11:58Backland, Backland didn't even have entrance music, but you gotta admit, in the early to mid 90s, a young
12:03fan's definitely gonna find someone like Razor Ramon more appealing than Mr. Backland with all due respect.
12:09Razor messes his opponent around at the opening bell and he refuses to shake Backland's hand,
12:14the bad guy then overpowers Bob on two separate occasions and when Backland gets the better of
12:18Razor, the bad guy sees red. Razor gets tripped a few times and Backland's all fired up, so Razor
12:24Ramon rethinks his game plan and Backland takes two body slams. We see some of those great working
12:29punches from Razor Ramon and Backland hits the mat. Razor keeps Backland down for a bit before the former
12:35WWF champion gets to his feet for a few hip tosses that, well, don't look all that great to be
12:41fair.
12:41Backland then misses a dropkick but he comes back with a running punch and Razor then falls victim
12:46to a double underhook suplex. A delayed atomic drop sends Razor to the apron, he's then forcefully
12:52brought back in, Razor then catches Backland out with a small package and Razor Ramon wins at
12:57WrestleMania. The match wasn't good, Doink vs Crush was more entertaining, but it's an interesting match
13:03that proves that even the bad guys can be appealing to wrestling fans when paired up against the wrong
13:08opponent. Backland's a wrestling legend, but fans were looking for something a bit more contemporary.
13:17Money Inc. attacked Brutus Beefcake with IRS's briefcase and they caved his face in. Beefcake
13:24went and got some big dude named Hulk Hogan to back him up and these two, known as the Megamaniacs,
13:29have got themselves a shot at Money Inc.'s tag team titles at WrestleMania 9. Quick side note,
13:34this was originally going to be the Nasty Boys vs Money Inc., but Hogan returned to the WWF,
13:40the match got changed and Braden Ov said in a recent interview that he and Jerry Sags were
13:44extremely pissed off about missing the big WrestleMania payday. Hogan had been absent from
13:50the WWF, he ducked out for a while when the company was coming under public scrutiny over the steroid
13:55allegations, but he's swooping into WrestleMania like the giant American bald eagle he is and he plans
14:00on winning the tag championships. Ted DiBiase says the stakes are always high in Caesars Palace and
14:06that's the way Money Inc. likes it. DiBiase and IRS don't make bets they can't win and the Megamaniacs
14:12can't bankrupt a company that has an unlimited credit line. IRS says Beefcake's new little mask won't
14:18save him from the beating he's about to get and apparently Hulk Hogan has a pretty rough looking face
14:23too thanks to a little accident Hulk had when leaving the gym last night. Money Inc. are implying that
14:28they had something to do with this. DiBiase and IRS make their entrance, out comes Beefcake, Hogan and
14:34Jimmy Hart, Jimmy turned his back on Money Inc. when they attacked Beefcake by the way, and yeah,
14:39Hogan has a pretty mean black eye. Most trustworthy sources say it was a jet ski accident, the more
14:45gossipy explanation was that Macho Man decked Hogan. Either way, Hulk's back at WrestleMania looking a bit rough,
14:51but the match gets underway immediately with Money Inc. getting dumped out of the ring so Hogan can
14:55rip his shirt off. Real American still playing at Caesars Palace. Hogan poses for the fans, the fans are
15:02going crazy for the Hulkster, and after a lot of time wasting, we settle down with Brutus Bootyman
15:07Beefcake and IRS in the ring. Beefcake takes a few shots before DiBiase comes in, the Million Dollar
15:12Man performs a few chops before IRS gets tagged. Clearly, Money Inc. plan on singling Beefcake out and
15:18using quick tags to their advantage, but DiBiase tries a double x handle and he hurts his hand on
15:24Beefcake's mask. That thing must be a ton weight. After a meeting of the minds, Money Inc. get knock
15:29loopy, DiBiase gets his head rocked on the top turnbuckle, and here comes Hulk Hogan to a great
15:34pop to dish out more punishment than the Million Dollar Man. DiBiase gets clotheslined before Beefcake
15:39comes in for a double big boot, the Mega Maniacs then lay in the punches as DiBiase gets knocked back
15:44and
15:44forth, Ted then gets sent to the outside and the Mega Maniacs make easy work of IRS, so Money Inc.
15:51decide
15:51fuck it, they're gonna walk out of this WrestleMania match. The referee then decides if Money Inc. get
15:56counted out then they'll also lose the tag team titles, so WWF referees can change the rules mid-match
16:02now, apparently. Money Inc. dash back down to the ring, Hogan gets some advice from Jimmy Hart,
16:07it must have been some terrible advice because DiBiase goes in control. And not only does Hogan get choked
16:13out on the ring ropes, he also gets choked out with a tag rope. IRS and DiBiase take turns at
16:17choking
16:18Hogan out and this eventually leads to Hogan getting locked in the Million Dollar Dream. Randy Savage
16:23says this is the move DiBiase's known for as Hogan gets brought down to the mat, there's no way Hogan's
16:28gonna escape this as… yeah, he escapes it. No, no wait, wait, he's back down. Nah, here comes Beefcake to
16:35ruin all the fun. Brutus applies a sleeper for all of 10 seconds and DiBiase's now knocked out cold.
16:40Hogan's also knocked out, we get to the count of 8 before Hogan sits up like the undertaker,
16:45and both men eventually tag out. Beefcake fires up on Money Inc. and DiBiase gets sent to the outside
16:50after an atomic drop, physics be damned, but this also gives the Million Dollar Man the opportunity
16:55to smack Brother Brood-Eye with IRS's magical briefcase. From this point on we're gonna build
17:00towards a Hulk Hogan hot tag, and to keep things spicy, Money Inc. are gonna try and remove Beefcake's
17:05protective mask. Eventually DiBiase removes it and Randy Savage says on commentary,
17:10Man, I can't wait to see this. But Beefcake's face is absolutely fine. Well, apart from Beefcake
17:16being an ugly bastard, but he's got no injuries that I can see. Anyway, the beefer takes a few
17:21shots to his uninjured face but he fires back with a double clothesline. Instead of tagging out,
17:26he locks in another sleeper. DiBiase tries to break it up and in the process, the referee gets knocked out.
17:31So Hogan tags in and the Hulkster cleans house. That no good dirty cheater Hulk Hogan then uses
17:37Beefcake's titanium mask to knock out DiBiase and IRS. Hulk then covers DiBiase while Beefcake
17:43covers Irwin, but there's no referee. So Jimmy Hart decides to jump in the ring, he turns his jacket
17:50inside out and he counts the pinfall. That's some incredible foresight right there from the mouth of
17:55the south. Bobby Heenan rightfully says on commentary that this doesn't count as the megamaniacs celebrate
18:00with the championship builds. A second official comes down to rule the match as the DQ and as
18:05Hulk Hogan and Beefcake argue with the official, money ain't getting a cheap shot. Beefcake and
18:09Hogan no sell it, so money ain't get out of dodge. Poor Danny Davis gets launched out of the ring
18:14by
18:15Jimmy Hart even though Danny was just doing his job. And I don't know, the megamaniacs were like
18:20super heels right here, very odd behaviour from Hulk and Beefcake. We then get a long drawn out celebration
18:26from the losers of this match but gotta give it to Hulkman, the fans still loved him and
18:30they got a kick out of this post-match pose-a-thon. Hogan realises that Money Inc left their briefcase
18:36behind and inside Hulk finds a brick, you should always travel with a brick ladies and gents,
18:42there's also some tax papers in there too and there's a stack of cash in there. Hogan celebrates
18:48with the money, the crowd are a little taken back when he sets it down to pose once again, but
18:52Hulk and
18:53Beefcake leave the ring and they hand out cash to folks in the front row. Hulkamania runs wild in 1993.
18:59It's a bit odd seeing Hogan placed in the middle of a Wrestlemania card, but WWF Championship Glory
19:05wasn't the Hulkster's main goal on this evening. Or maybe it was?
19:15Mr Perfect vs The Narcissist Lex Luger is our next match. Lex Luger says he's beyond perfection,
19:21he even knocked out Bret Hart earlier during a Wrestlemania brunch, but Perfect's on a roll in
19:26Vegas and he's been winning big at the tables. Lex Luger has no chance tonight. Perfect then can't
19:32get Lex's name right before leaving the promo. I like how Kurt and Mean Gene smile at each other,
19:43they know it's a bodge but they see the humour in it anyway. Lex, who just made his WWF debut
19:48at the
19:49Royal Rumble pay per view, comes out with 4 Vegas ladies and they're all holding big mirrors.
19:54It's a pretty cool entrance with Lex admiring himself while Pyro goes off, but Lex is in for a
19:59tough match tonight and he shouldn't be so concerned about how he looks. Perfect makes his entrance,
20:04one of the girls try to touch him and he's like, get the fuck out of here. The two square
20:08off in the
20:08middle of the ring, we get wrist lock counters to start us off, and you know, now that I think
20:13about
20:14it, I'm sure there were some really high expectations backstage for this one. Perfect's abilities weren't
20:19in question, I think all eyes would have been on Lex Luger. Also, these two were following Hulk Hogan,
20:25not an easy spot to be in. Mr Perfect performs an e-lift and Lex takes a timeout following a
20:30dropkick.
20:31The match resumes with Lex poking Kurt in the eye and Perfect takes a few punches, but when Lex goes
20:36for
20:36a kick he ends up getting smacked in the face instead and Perfect's gonna do some damage to the
20:40narcissist's knee. So far, Lex has done nothing in this match. In between attacking Luger's knee,
20:46Perfect delivers a hard chop that echoes all the way down the Las Vegas strip and Kurt seemed pretty
20:51proud of it too. Lex then begins to fight back and it's Perfect making Luger look like a million bucks
20:56by taking a hard bump in the corner. Lex stays on Perfect when the match goes to the outside,
21:01Lex is gonna focus his efforts on the lower back now as he delivers a few clubbing blows followed by
21:06a
21:06running backbreaker, but Perfect isn't out just yet. Kurt gets caught out in the corner and Lex uses the
21:12ropes when going for a pin, referee Joey Morellis sees this blatant cheating from Lex and he stops
21:17his count, so Lex gets up and he delivers a power slam, he's definitely a bit more active during these
21:23final moments of the match. The narcissist gets caught out with a sleeper but it's quickly broken up,
21:28Perfect then tries a small package but he only gets a two, Lex then takes a slingshot followed by two
21:33punches to the head and Perfect thinks he has it won after a hard forearm but again, it only gets
21:38a two.
21:39The match ends when Perfect performs a missile dropkick but he fails to pin Lex, Lex then counters
21:44a backslide with one of his own and Perfect gets his feet on the middle rope, Mirella doesn't see it
21:48however and Lex Luger beats Perfect via pinfall. No doubt about it, Perfect carried this match but
21:54there's only so much one man can do. I actually like the narcissist character and I think there could've
21:59been much more than the WWF could've done with the gimmick but this wasn't a great performance from
22:04Lex and I hope he bought Kurt a case of beer following the show, he definitely deserved it.
22:09Lex attacks Kurt after the bell with his metal plated forearm before walking through the curtain
22:14and when Perfect wakes up he gets a round of applause from the audience, again he deserved it.
22:19Perfect runs back to find Lex, he gets in a few shots when he locates him but Shawn Michaels ends
22:24up helping the narcissist and Perfect gets beaten down once again. This would set up an HBK vs Perfect
22:30rivalry that did have a lot of potential. Right, the next match is Undertaker vs Jan Gonzalez,
22:39god help us all. I recently covered this match and the whole Gonzalez feud for a video I uploaded
22:44just a few weeks ago so rather go on over everything again, I'm gonna play the Wrestlemania 9 portion of
22:50that video. After this we'll check out the Wrestlemania main event so if you've already watched the
22:54Gonzalez video you can skip ahead to the Bret vs Yoko match, if not, enjoy what many call one
23:00of the worst matches in Wrestlemania history. The match takes place in the semi main spot,
23:06first out is Jan Gonzalez and Harvey Whippleman. Jan stops halfway down the ramp to have a quick chat
23:11with what I assume are some of his biggest fans before continuing down to the ring. Green smoke appears
23:16at the entranceway as the undertaker makes his entrance via a chariot being pulled by two random dudes,
23:22next to Taker is a vulture perched with its wings stretched out for most of the ride down. Once
23:28Taker makes it down to the ring and the handler goes to take the bird away, it immediately starts
23:32freaking out. But still, say what you want about the match itself, the undertaker's entrance is very
23:37memorable, the bell had to ring sooner or later though. Paul removes Taker's jacket, Gonzalez turns
23:43to face his opponent and here we go. From the corner, Undertaker looks over his shoulder at the taunting
23:48giant Gonzalez. Gonzalez takes a step forward, egging the undertaker on and without fear,
23:54the dead man walks right up to the big man. Jan takes the initiative, giving Taker a strong clubbing
23:59blow to the back, Taker no-sails it. Gonzalez throws another big club, this time the undertaker
24:05does partially sell it but again he walks right back up to giant Gonzalez. This happens one more time
24:10and Gonzalez is now shocked. He goes for a fourth attempt but this time the dead man blocks it before
24:16returning with a strike of his own, a strike that misses by a mile by the way. Still,
24:21giant a little shook as Taker connects with another strike, this one thankfully connects a lot better.
24:26A third hit makes Gonzalez fall back into the corner, the undertaker attempts to capitalize by
24:31choking his opponent out, however, Gonzalez grabs Taker by the throat and he walks in back to the middle
24:36of the ring. Gonzalez stops halfway and he yells at the crowd before walking Taker all the way back to
24:42the opposite corner, Undertaker attempts to fight back by climbing to the second rope to choke out
24:46Gonzalez, the giant eases up his death grip but immediately he follows up with a low blow,
24:52that's not very sportsmanlike, but the Phenom takes the advantage by striking Gonzalez before
24:56walking the ropes to deliver old school. It's not a good sign when Undertaker goes for old school this
25:02early in a match but Taker continues his attack in the corner with punches and kicks. The ref breaks up
25:07Taker's onslaught, giving Gonzalez enough time to regain some composure, and Gonzalez nails Taker with
25:13a big boot followed by a clothesline. Gonzalez throws yet another clubbing blow before hitting
25:18the dead man with a hip toss, sending the Phenom to the other side of the ring. He then performs
25:23a
25:23standing reverse chinlock so I don't want to hear any talk about this dude having a limited moveset,
25:29it goes to the mat but Taker makes it back to his feet once after falling to one knee, eventually
25:35though
25:35the sheer awesomeness of the reverse chinlock is just too much for the Undertaker as he takes a seat
25:40on the canvas. A chinlock that put the Undertaker on his ass, this is the best mania match ever.
25:46The ref moves in to check and make sure the Undertaker's still conscious but the power of the
25:50urn apparently trumps the deadly arts of chinlockery as the Undertaker fights his way back up.
25:55Gonzalez takes a few punches but Taker's comeback gets cut down abruptly and the match goes to the
26:00outside. The dead man takes chops, clubbing blows and a few bumps at the ring steps but the power of
26:06the urn makes the Undertaker get up and get himself back in the ring. Gonzalez doesn't understand how
26:11Taker can keep coming back after all the punishment he's taken but Taker fights back with more punches
26:15and kicks as he leads Gonzalez back into the corner. The big man takes more and more strikes to the
26:20face
26:21in midsection until Gonzalez has finally had enough. Wittleman jumps up to cause a distraction but not
26:27before throwing what looks like a towel into the ring. While the dead man attempts to choke out the
26:31slimy manager Paul Bearer jumps up on the opposite side of the ring as Jan Gonzalez picks up that towel.
26:36Gonzalez hits Paul with a headbutt before using that towel on the Undertaker, the dead man gets
26:41smothered as the ref just kinda keeps asking, hey what's going on here. On commentary Bobby Heenan
26:47and Randy Savage agree that it smells like chloroform coming from that towel but keep in mind that this
26:52isn't an ODQ match and the refs counting down like Gonzalez put the Undertaker in a standard wrestling
26:57hold. Never mind the fact that the commentators can smell the chloroform quite some distance away
27:02yet the refs got no fucking idea what's going on, it's dreadful. The bells finally rung after the
27:08giant refuses to take that towel off the dead man's face, forcing a DQ victory for the Undertaker.
27:14Taker passes out and the giant celebrates in the ring, the fans in attendance rightfully boo the awful
27:20finish, officials make their way down to the ring and they pull Undertaker out, Gonzalez plays up to
27:25the crowd and he even chokeslams a referee as the Undertaker gets put on a stretcher, the audience are
27:30now shouting bullshit but the commentators attempt to cover this up by saying they're chanting Hogan,
27:35not the best save in the world but they had to do something I guess. Things are looking grim but
27:40we
27:41hear the Undertaker's gong, the power of the urns brought the Phenom back to life, the dead man has
27:46re-risen. The Undertaker stumbles back down to the ring, Gonzalez is shocked, Undertaker steps in the
27:51ropes to deliver punches, kicks, two clotheslines and finally a jumping clothesline, this is enough to
27:57put Gonzalez down. Paul Bear attempts to hold the Phenom back as Gonzalez gets escorted out of Caesars
28:02Palace by security guards, and there you have it, the match that many people say is the worst of the
28:07Undertaker's whole Wrestlemania run. That being said, and I'm just being honest here, I'd rather watch this than
28:13The Undertaker vs Jake Roberts, at least there's a little comedy value in the Wrestlemania 9 match.
28:24Yoko Zuna made his WWF debut in late 1992 and he dominated everyone who was put in front of him.
28:30He was elevated to main event status quite quickly and he made history by having the first ever match
28:34on WWF's Raw television show and he also won the 1993 Raw Rumble, eliminating Macho Man Randy Savage
28:41at the end of the match. Bret Hart defeated Ric Flair for the WWF title and since then he's taken
28:46a
28:46lot of pride in being a fighting champion, not a guy who just defends the belt at big events like
28:51many who came before him. The Hitman was, at the time, a new breed of WWF champion who was leading
28:57the company into the new generation, a hard-working wrestler who put emphasis on athleticism, technical
29:03wrestling and in-ring storytelling, but WrestleMania 9 would prove to be his biggest challenge to date.
29:08The best there is takes on an unstoppable monster at Caesars Palace, it's time for the WrestleMania 9 main event.
29:15Hulk Hogan gets interviewed before the match, he says he just left Bret Hart's locker room and he
29:20confirms that yes, Bret Hart is a Hulkamaniac, who would have thought it. Hogan says he supports the
29:25Hitman in this upcoming match, he tells him to be careful when dealing with Yokozuna and Mr. Fuji,
29:30and Hogan says he's started to doubt the power of Hulkamania as he looked in Bret Hart's eyes. So Hogan
29:36issues a
29:37challenge, no matter who wins this title match, Hogan wants to be first in line for a WWF title shot.
29:43Mate, you couldn't beat Money Incorporated so you should be the last person asking for a WWF title
29:48opportunity. Yokozuna makes his entrance first and what a beast this guy was. The audience have no
29:54love for the big man but many knew that Bret had a mountain to climb if he was gonna leave
29:58Las Vegas,
29:59still the WWF champion. Out comes the Hitman to a great ovation, fans are on their feet for the
30:04excellence of execution and it's clear as day who the fan favourite is here. Bret gives his glasses
30:09away to a lucky fan at ringside and he kisses the WWF title before handing it over to the referee.
30:20Yokozuna performs Shiko before the match begins and Bret's having none of it. His excellency runs
30:25into Yokozuna with a dropkick and he stays on the challenger with a few mounted punches,
30:29but Yokozuna pushes Bret away. Bret lays in a few right hands before trying to go behind
30:34Yoko but the challenger only has to swing his hips to send Bret to the mat and the hitman
30:39then gets bulldozed by Yokozuna. Bret ends up on the outside and Yokozuna tries to stop the champion
30:44from entering the ring, Bret uses the ring ropes to trip Yoko up and Bret launches himself on top
30:49of his opponent to land a few more punches and while Yokozuna is still tied up, Bret performs his
30:54second rope elbow drop. The referee frees Yokozuna and the champ tries to put the challenger down with a
30:59few clotheslines. This doesn't work out and it's Bret who ends up getting put on the mat,
31:04he then takes an elbow drop followed by a body slam and then Big Yoko performs a leg drop that
31:09makes
31:09the crowd at Caesars Palace gasp. Yokozuna's leg drops always look fantastic. The audience then chant
31:16USA at the Canadian and Samoan American as Yokozuna chokes Bret out on the ring ropes. The big man then
31:22brings Bret down with a nerve pinch and a throat thrust sends Hart into the corner. After getting launched
31:27into the opposite corner, Bret gets a boot up and it looks like he goes for a sleeper afterwards but
31:32both men crash to the mat. Still, it's Yokozuna who gets to his feet first and Bret goes down after
31:37a
31:38standing sidekick. The mat slows down again with another deadly nerve pinch from the challenger.
31:43When the two men get to their feet, Yokozuna goes for a corner splash but Bret moves out of the
31:47way
31:48and this time the hitman is able to successfully pull off a diving bulldog. We then see Bret's second
31:54rope elbow drop and Bret then pulls off a second rope clothesline that doesn't knock the big man
31:59off his feet. So Bret pulls off a jumping clothesline that brings Yokozuna down and the crowd are now
32:04really rallying behind Bret. The champ goes up for a few corner punches and when Yokozuna tries to pull
32:09Bret away, Bret ends up exposing the top turnbuckle. This actually works in Bret's favour as Yokozuna gets
32:14his head drilled into the corner seconds later. All Bret has to do now is apply the sharpshooter and with
32:20a
32:20look of determination in his eyes, Hart applies his finishing hold. Mr Fuji, that no good Mr Fuji,
32:26throws salt in Bret's eyes and the hitman's been blinded. This is all it takes for Bret to fall to
32:31the mat and release the sharpshooter. Yokozuna covers Bret, Yokozuna wins via pinfall and Yokozuna
32:38is the new WWF champion. The crowd are absolutely stunned. By the way, this match was supposed to be
32:44longer. Bret said Yoko skipped a huge portion of the match and just went for the finish,
32:49and you do notice it's a pretty short WWF title match when watching it back.
32:53But hold onto your red and yellow bandanas folks because WrestleMania 9 isn't over yet.
33:04Hulk Hogan comes out to protest this decision but the referee says it's final. Yokozuna is the new
33:10WWF champion. The Hulkster tends to Bret hard while Mr Fuji grabs a microphone and Mr Fuji challenges
33:16Hogan to face Yokozuna right now for the WWF title. On the outside of the ring, Bret hams it up
33:23by saying
33:23go get him Hulk while pointing to the ring and Mr Hogan is happy to oblige. Another WWF title match
33:30takes
33:30place at WrestleMania 9 as the crowd lose their minds and it's over in a matter of seconds. Hogan gets
33:37smacked, Yoko holds him in place for Fuji to throw more salt, but Hogan dodges it and all Hulk has
33:42to
33:42do is hit a clothesline and hit the big leg drop. Hulk Hogan becomes the new WWF champion and this
33:48turn of events was a pretty sore subject for a lot of people back then and it still is even
33:53to this
33:53very day. Bret said he wasn't happy with how WrestleMania 9 was gonna play out after getting
33:58details about creative, but Bret also said he was led to believe a Hogan vs Heart WWF title match would
34:04happen down the road and apparently Hogan said he would drop the belt back to Bret. Obviously this
34:10didn't happen and Bret remained bitter towards Hulk Hogan due to how things played out, but what you
34:15gonna do brother? Let's not forget Yokozuna, a new villain in WWF who was unstoppable up until this
34:22point got completely wiped out in a matter of seconds. He was also very young here and he had a
34:28full career
34:28ahead of him so yeah, you can see why some folks didn't like the finish. I'm not a fan of
34:34it either
34:34if I'm honest, but, and I've said this before, you can't argue with the audience response. They went crazy
34:40for the Hulkster at the end of WrestleMania 9. I've heard the argument that the fans who attended
34:45Mania 9 weren't real wrestling fans, they were tourists who just so happened to pop in for a wrestling
34:51show, and I say that's an absolute cop out. Yeah, I'm sure many people at Mania 9 only went because
34:57it was
34:57something to do while on vacation, but just watch King of the Ring 1993 where Hogan defends the belt
35:02against Yokozuna, you'll see clear as day that WWF fans still loved the Hulkster, even when he
35:08debuted in WCW he was still getting great pops. I'm a Bret Hart fan, you guys know that, the ending
35:14to
35:14WrestleMania 9 was incredibly short sighted and it annoyed me a lot all those years ago,
35:19but Hogan's popularity among wrestling fans was still alive and well in 1993.
35:28So, that's WrestleMania 9, it's a unique WrestleMania, but it's also a letdown. The opener was decent,
35:35the Steiners vs. Head Shrinkers is a personal favourite of mine, and from there, it's a mixed
35:40bag that ranges from average to bad. The ending is what everyone remembers and it's the main reason
35:45why this WrestleMania gets ripped apart so much, and that Gonzalez vs Undertaker match, yeah, it was pretty awful.
35:52I don't think it's the worst WrestleMania, if I'm honest with myself, WrestleMania 11 was worse than
35:57Mania 9, but let me know your thoughts in the comments and tell me your memories of watching this
36:03show when you were younger, I always enjoy reading comments like that. Like and subscribe, it really
36:09helps the channel out, thank you very much for watching guys and look out for other classic
