00:00The Speaker of Senegal's Parliament, Ousmane Sonko, won re-election Saturday as head of their party amid a political crisis
00:09sparked by their fallout with President Fahidi Amai.
00:13Sonko alluded to his split with Fahidi in a speech broadcast by the PASTIF party.
00:20First of all, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the renewed trust you
00:25have placed in me by re-electing me as President of our party.
00:29I am fully aware of the weight of this responsibility, as PASTIF is no ordinary party in the Senegalese political
00:36landscape, in the African political landscape, and indeed in the global perception.
00:41The PASTIF party said Sonko had unanimously won a vote of 583 party delegates.
00:49Sonko reassured his supporters of fighting back to reinstate the strength of the PASTIF party.
00:54The revolution can be hijacked, co-opted, or stripped of their substance when they lack both a clear doctrine and
01:03organization capable of ensuring that change is sustained over the long term.
01:07And that is why this Congress is historic two years after we assume the highest offices of the state.
01:15Fahidi Amai won the presidency after wildly popular Sonko was barred from standing in Senegal's 2024 election.
01:22Sonko later anointed Fahidi to run in his place, then served as his prime minister.
01:28But I also want to reassure you that this time no attempt to sabotage this revolution will succeed because the
01:35people standing shoulder to shoulder with PASTIF will provide the necessary guarantee so that we can finally liberate our country.
01:41Local elections are scheduled for 2027 ahead of a presidential election in 2029.
01:46While PASTIF's majority in the National Assembly can censor the government from November following two years in office,
01:53Fahidi will also be authorized to dissolve the parliament to try to secure a new majority.
