Cameroon’s presidential race starts with cautious optimism

The presidential campaign officially opened on Saturday in a subdued atmosphere, marked by a candidate defying a separatist lockdown, another building a coalition, and the conspicuous absence of both the long-ruling incumbent and a prominent opposition figure.

00:00In Cameroon, the presidential campaign officially kicked off on Saturday with a subdued start.
00:06In Bamenda, SDF candidate Joshua Ossi defied a separatist-imposed lockdown to launch his campaign.
00:14He has pledged to resolve the security crisis that has plagued the region for nearly a decade,
00:20starting from the first day of his mandate if elected.
00:23No other candidate knows the northwest and southwest better than I do.
00:30No other candidate comes from historic political party of the northwest and southwest.
00:35We believe we have the capacity to bring peace to these regions.
00:41In Yaounde, Belo Buba Maigari also launched his campaign and bet in a more low-key event at his party headquarters.
00:48On this occasion, he was joined by one of the 11 other candidates who has dropped out of the race,
00:54Atecky Sexta Carson, who threw his support behind Maigari.

02:09With just 13 days remaining, candidates have until the election to convince nearly 8 million registered voters nationwide.
