Maine Cabin Masters - Season 13 Episode 2 - Heads in Beds
Transcript
00:00Beautiful day.
00:01Tell us what's up.
00:02We purchased this camp when our kids were little.
00:04We've definitely outgrown this.
00:06You can tell us how it is up there, Chase.
00:08Tight.
00:08So they want more sleeping room in that area, too?
00:10So that's the goal.
00:11The problem with that is it's a beautiful timber frame.
00:13We just need to find a way to increase the head height
00:16in the loft space without cutting into the timber frame.
00:18Bum, bum, bum!
00:20Whoa!
00:21I cannot weigh more than you.
00:23Mother of hell, it's cold.
00:25Jedi, hit the gavel, please.
00:27No.
00:29He's closed.
00:30Oh!
00:30Oh, my gosh.
00:31Wow!
00:32Hello!
00:34Hi!
00:34This is incredible.
00:44Beautiful day.
00:45It is a beautiful day.
00:47It's a beautiful day for a foliage tour.
00:50You notice how this side of the lake is where all the colors are,
00:55and this side of the lake is still green?
00:56There's a lot of factors, isn't there?
00:59A lot of factors.
00:59What's the number one factor?
01:01Water?
01:01Temperature, right?
01:02Temperature.
01:03Once it starts freezing, then the trees stop making chlorophyll.
01:07Well, I'm pretty sure that we aren't out here just for a foliage tour, so...
01:12Nope.
01:12Tell us what's up.
01:14We are headed to meet Lynn and her son Spencer at their camp in Fayette on David Fund.
01:21Lynn and her husband Steve bought the camp in the late 90s.
01:24They've used it for all those years with three sons, and as the kids get older, the family
01:29gets bigger.
01:30They want to make it more comfortable for the family.
01:32Well, why don't we head on in and go find them?
01:35Okay.
01:35This fall foliage tour is over.
01:40Oh.
01:40I think I see...
01:42Oh.
01:43Hi, guys.
01:44My name is Lynn McGrath, and I am one of the owners, along with my husband, of this lovely
01:49little cabin.
01:50Hi.
01:50Hi, Chase.
01:51Good to see you.
01:51My name is Spencer McGrath.
01:53I am the youngest of three boys.
01:55This place is really cute.
01:57And every time I come up here, it still fills me with so much nostalgia.
02:01And just knowing that this can continue is really heartwarming.
02:04Yeah, so tell us a little bit about the history of the camp.
02:06We purchased this camp 25 years ago, so we bought it when our kids were little as a place
02:11to go and just be on a nice pond.
02:13So a little camp worked out.
02:15We've definitely outgrown this.
02:17We now have daughter-in-laws, grandchildren, more and more people that come up and stay.
02:21So we figure if we can make it a little more heads-in-beds here, and they can enjoy it
02:26at night, it'd be great.
02:28Heads-in-beds.
02:29Heads-in-beds.
02:30I want more heads-in-beds here.
02:31Heads-and-beds.
02:32Heads.
02:33Oh, it's heads-in-beds.
02:34Is it heads-in-beds or heads-and-beds?
02:36What's your brother asking?
02:37Both.
02:38I was saying heads-in-beds, but either way, I like it.
02:41Yeah, so what are you looking to have done to the camp?
02:43We can't do too much on the front because it's so close to the water.
02:47But we could raise the roof on the back so we can put more beds up there.
02:50We also have the lovely outhouse, and we'd like to have an inside compost and toilet for the ladies at
02:57night.
02:57Also, the siding needs to be redone, the roof needs to be redone, and all the windows.
03:02We do suspect that the camp originally came in two sections because when you go inside, you'll see the back
03:08section.
03:08It's got these huge, like, barn beams, and the front section is very different.
03:13So we suspect that they built onto it to give a little more space.
03:17Is there anything that you don't want to see touched?
03:21The beams in that back room, I think they add a lot of character.
03:24It's three season.
03:25It is, but we do use it in the winter.
03:28We have relatives that love ice fishing, so you can have the wood stove going.
03:32We did have a wood stove that was working, but the chimney was bad.
03:34But I'd love to have it back in.
03:36Yep.
03:37So this camp does have power.
03:39It has power, but no plumbing, and we don't want plumbing.
03:42All right.
03:42Yep.
03:42Let's head inside and take a look.
03:44All right.
03:46Oh, come on in.
03:48It's cozy.
03:49Yep.
03:50It is a cozy little camp.
03:52Yeah.
03:53This is where we had them open up the ceiling a little bit to let a little more light in,
03:57because it felt very close in when we first got it.
04:01That's the wood stove that I'd love to have hooked back up.
04:04I'm hoping we can have the kitchen area more back here and just have a table for eating at,
04:11because we haven't had any space.
04:12No running water, no plumbing.
04:14You can put the kitchen wherever you want.
04:15I know.
04:17The other thing is the upstairs ladder.
04:19My grandson, when it was time to come back down, he would start crying and going,
04:23I can't do it.
04:24And you're thinking still a ladder, but more like a ship's ladder.
04:27Exactly.
04:27Something with handrails and a little bit more of a angle to it.
04:29Something with railings and stuff.
04:31And this is what we use as the bedroom.
04:33Perfect.
04:35We'll come see you afterwards.
04:36We'll see you outside.
04:37Okay.
04:40This gets great light.
04:41Wow.
04:42These chairs are so cute.
04:43There's the beams.
04:44Look at these chairs.
04:45This is cool.
04:46What a spot.
04:47I know.
04:48So they want this to be opened up so it's all, or they want this bedroom to stay a bedroom.
04:52I was unclear about that.
04:53They want this to stay a bedroom and they want that to be opened up and made in the living
04:58area.
04:58And then they've got a permit to go out off the back of it.
05:02Okay.
05:03So they can put the bathroom on the backside and get a little bit more floor space to make
05:08upstairs a little more usable.
05:09So are we not even touching this room?
05:10Is that what you're saying?
05:11Oh, we will.
05:11We will.
05:12Ryan, this is for happy campers only.
05:16I'm a happy camper.
05:17They've got some cute stuff here.
05:19You can tell us how it is up there, Chase.
05:21Tight.
05:23So they want more sleeping room in that area too?
05:25So that's the goal, is to get more sleeping up here.
05:28Beds and heads.
05:29The problem with that is, this section over here, it's a beautiful timber frame.
05:33Oh, we have to cut into it.
05:34And so to cut that up, you kind of lose a lot if you...
05:37But if they're not, if you can't see that section because it's a beautiful timber frame,
05:40but you can't see it and they're not using it.
05:41But like, it's a big timber.
05:43Oh, that's a chunky beam.
05:45Yeah.
05:45Let's replace the whole thing.
05:47Take this with us.
05:49Seriously.
05:50That's the challenge.
05:50She wants to save the beams.
05:52I guarantee you're going to wake up at some point at night being like,
05:55what do I do with that thing?
05:56Let's hope.
05:56And let's not cut enough.
05:58Correct.
05:59All right.
06:00That's when I can do this.
06:02The McGrath's love the history their cabin holds, but they need more space.
06:05So inside, we'll strip the walls to expose the original timber beams and repine where it needed.
06:09We'll flop the kitchen and living space, reinstall the wood stove,
06:12and build out a hallway leading to a new bathroom for their composting toilet.
06:16We'll build a new ladder leading upstairs and find a way to preserve the timber frame,
06:20all while figuring out how to fit more heads and beds.
06:23Outside, we'll jack and level the cabin to square up the structure,
06:26rip off the shingle siding, re-side it in pine, install all new windows, a brand new chimney,
06:32and give it a new metal roof.
06:34How much do you have to put into the renovations?
06:38We have 50,000.
06:40And how long do we have to get the work done by?
06:43We're hoping 10-ish weeks.
06:45Okay.
06:45We just need a set of keys and we're ready to get going.
06:49Here's your little padlock key.
06:51A widow key.
06:51The widow key for the widow cabin.
06:54We'll see you and hopefully the rest of the family in about 10 weeks.
06:57Yes.
06:58Thank you very much.
06:59Bye.
06:59Nice meeting you.
07:00And we've got to call the guys.
07:13Oh, look at this place.
07:15Hey, you're here early.
07:18This demo to be done.
07:19Demo to be done.
07:21See, we've got the dump trailer ready to go.
07:22Today we are in Fayette on David Pond at the McGrath camp.
07:29Sweet spot.
07:30Great spot.
07:31Let's go inside and take a look.
07:33Sweet.
07:41Look at this place.
07:47Yeah.
07:48At least it's small enough where you can really do a lot to it pretty fast.
07:52Yep.
07:53Today we'll kind of just peel off a lot of the siding, see what's going on.
07:58Kitchen can come out.
07:59Floors can come up.
08:00We've got the dump trailer right there.
08:03So let's get to it.
08:04There's a lot of different layers and we've got to get into it and see what's going on.
08:12Look at this cute little thing.
08:14Morning, Brad.
08:15Morning.
08:17So we'll just start peeling back the walls and see what's in there.
08:24We've got to get the stove apart.
08:28I know how to take it.
08:30Yeah, so one of the things the homeowners wanted to save was the antique cook stove.
08:34And then this comes out.
08:36I think we can take the top as one unit.
08:38Yeah, the top comes as one, the shelf comes as one, and the base comes as one.
08:42That's a small one, and that one probably weighs between four and 600 pounds.
08:48Oh yeah, it's going to be heavy again.
08:49They are not light.
08:50They are very heavy.
08:53Holy moly.
09:02Front, back.
09:02What are you doing?
09:03We'll do the front first.
09:05Yeah, go ahead.
09:09Okay, that should lift right off.
09:11Yeah!
09:12The homeowners wanted to save the antique cook stove.
09:16Where am I going?
09:17Right to the chef.
09:17Okay.
09:18Well, it's a bit of a process if you try and carry it all as one.
09:21So we remove the doors and all of the plates, the back warming shelf.
09:27We're able to pick it up and carry it.
09:29Let me get by here with my hands.
09:32Yeah!
09:33Makes it a lot lighter.
09:34It's all cast iron.
09:35You okay?
09:36Yeah.
09:37All right, sit down for a second.
09:39Yeah.
09:41So, it's quite heavy.
09:43There you go.
09:45Oh, my fingers!
09:46Oh!
09:47I know.
09:49Is that good with it?
09:50I think so.
09:51One, three.
09:52You got it, Sam.
09:57What?
10:01Front door.
10:02I don't know what it is.
10:04I mean, it's framed the same over here, too.
10:06Yeah, so I'm working in the bedroom, pulling apart the closet.
10:09What?
10:11And then we got off the paneling and, you know, just trying to figure out what the building
10:19was.
10:19It's old.
10:20Yeah.
10:21Very old.
10:23Peeled off that, I think it was like an old wallpaper or something, and then there were
10:28all the slats in the walls, and there was, you know, intentional spacing between them.
10:33Dixie, look in here!
10:35Which, you know, isn't normal.
10:37I think it was a smokehouse.
10:40You think?
10:41Why else would you do it?
10:44That's super intentional.
10:46Well, air flow.
10:47It's to allow air flow.
10:48Yeah.
10:49For a smoker.
10:50Isn't that what you want?
10:51Well, yeah.
10:51It's kind of charred.
10:53You'd hang your fish or whatever.
10:55Hang it or set it out on wraps.
10:56So, you know, my hypothesis is that it was a smokehouse.
11:01Because of a smokehouse, you need air flow through it.
11:04And those slats tie into the camp's history, which is interesting.
11:07So, we'll take them off and figure out a way to incorporate them back into the camp.
11:13Oh, that's pretty.
11:18Yeah, so the addition goes back about three feet further than the timber frame structure.
11:25This is beautiful.
11:26Yeah.
11:27So, we're going to add an addition onto the back of the timber frame structure.
11:35It's put in compost and toilet, no running water, and bathroom space.
11:48Hey, Dixie.
11:49Yo, Ash.
11:50What's up?
11:51Wow.
11:52Lots happened here.
11:53Yeah, so I came a little bit late today.
11:55How you doing, Ash?
11:56How's the boy?
11:57So, you feeling a little better?
11:58Not so much pain?
11:59Ryan had hip surgery a couple days ago.
12:03Hey, I'll pass these mattresses down, I guess.
12:05So, I have been just taking care of him and, you know, waiting on him hand and foot.
12:09Yo, everybody clear back there?
12:11Okay, let it go.
12:13This room didn't look like a square before.
12:15I had a closet.
12:17Oh, that's why.
12:19Why would they have put that up over this?
12:23I haven't even seen up there.
12:25You should go look.
12:26I'm going to break the wall after the ladder.
12:27I'll spot you.
12:28Yeah.
12:30Are we going to take these out?
12:32No, that's the thing.
12:33We want to try.
12:33As I said, if we're taking these out, we're saving these.
12:34These are cool.
12:36No, we want to leave it intact as much as possible.
12:39But you can't if you want a loft over here.
12:42So, we don't want to touch the timber frame just because it's intentionally built so it locks
12:45everything together.
12:46Well, why couldn't you leave the bottom color ties?
12:48Why can't you take off the A, leave the bottom color ties, do your floor system right off
12:53of those?
12:54Because we don't want to mess with any of the timber frame if possible.
12:57We just need to find a way to increase the loft space, increase the head height in the
13:01loft space without cutting into the timber frame.
13:03Are we going to put this wallpaper back out?
13:05No.
13:07You don't like this little wallpaper?
13:09Some of you.
13:10So when I got here, they pointed out some kind of unique wallpaper that was in the wall
13:14that had been there years ago.
13:16I don't even think they used it as wallpaper.
13:17I think at that point they were using it as just a backing.
13:20So yeah, that might be something that we might be able to reincorporate into the build
13:24as well.
13:25So we'll see.
13:26TBD.
13:30TBD.
13:31Yeah.
13:31Good day.
13:32Great day.
13:33Enjoy your weekend.
13:34Yeah.
13:34That sounds good.
13:35It's going to be beautiful.
13:36Have some foliage.
13:36It's going to be just like this.
13:50Definitely need some more barking.
13:53It's week three up at the McGrath camp and things are moving along.
14:01We've got the guys jacking and leveling around the camp.
14:13Yeah.
14:13Don't scare them off.
14:15So we can start working on the new addition for their composting toilet bathroom area.
14:24That's a lot better.
14:32From there we'll rip into the roof.
14:33I'm working here.
14:37So that we can create a larger loft space for the family.
14:44So once the guys started stripping back the old roof system.
14:52They found out some of those old timbers were rotted.
14:56So we've decided to take the roof system down completely and reframe a new one to get more
15:01headspace.
15:04And incorporate as many of the timber frame beams we were able to save back into the can.
15:13So once we get the roof system torn out.
15:21We can start rebuilding our floor system.
15:29We'll get it sheathed over.
15:31Go ahead and flex.
15:33And then get to working on our timber frame.
15:35Curl that one Brad.
15:36All right.
15:38We'll reuse any timbers as support posts for our ridge beam for the new roof system.
15:44Oh hang on.
15:46Just yeah.
15:46A little bit.
15:47Oh.
15:47Right there.
15:55From there we can start building walls.
16:05What's up guys?
16:07What's up?
16:08Getting out of the house.
16:09Nice.
16:10And then we can get going on rafters.
16:12How you doing?
16:13Not bad.
16:14Good.
16:15I can get out for a couple hours and then I gotta go home and ice and sit down.
16:17Yeah.
16:18A little out of time you know.
16:19Yeah you know I had a hip replacement so I've been out for the past few weeks.
16:22But Steve Colby and crew are doing a heck of a job.
16:25They got the rafters up.
16:28And they're getting the roof sheathed.
16:34What a difference already.
16:39And now they're closing it in.
16:43You like it?
16:44Yeah.
16:46Pretty cool.
16:47See what happens in another three weeks.
16:53Okay Heidi I have us all set up in here.
16:56This should be pretty straight forward.
16:58So today I am working on a coat rack for the McGrath camp with Heidi.
17:02So when we did demo at the McGrath camp.
17:05Yeah.
17:05We found this old wallpaper.
17:07So since we found this I just thought we'll just like showcase it a little bit.
17:11Because every little piece came off in tiny little strips like this.
17:13I love it.
17:14You know everyone needs a coat rack at camp.
17:15Do you want to cut it first or?
17:17Yeah.
17:17Here we go.
17:19You come out of the lake and you have a wet towel.
17:22Boom.
17:22Hang up your towel.
17:23Hang up your swimsuit.
17:24You know.
17:24So you can never have too many coat racks.
17:27Yes.
17:28That looks good.
17:29So that's what we decided to do.
17:31Okay.
17:32So the steps to making a coat rack are pretty simple.
17:34All right.
17:35So now I say we just paint on the glue.
17:37You find a piece of paper or wallpaper or whatever it is.
17:42Let's put it on and see what happens.
17:45Very gelatinous.
17:46Cut it to size.
17:47Put down some glue.
17:49Dee-dee-dee-dee.
17:50Where'd this board come from?
17:51Right downstairs.
17:53Perfect.
17:54And then press it on.
17:56Tell me when you like it.
17:57Yeah.
17:58You like it?
17:59Yeah.
17:59Okay.
18:00Look, I brought this thing up.
18:01Oh, thank you.
18:03Is that a vacuum?
18:05Yeah.
18:06It is.
18:07It's perfect.
18:07Thanks.
18:08That works really well, actually.
18:10You can hear the fabric.
18:13Yeah.
18:13It doesn't seem to be sticky.
18:14I'm a little bit nervous about the, yeah, the sides.
18:17What about wood glue?
18:19Is that?
18:19Yeah, let's get some.
18:20There's some right there.
18:21Okay.
18:22Let's try this on the sides here.
18:23Let me just try it.
18:25See what happens here.
18:31I need a thing.
18:32How about this?
18:33What we found out today is crafting glue is good for something.
18:36I got some wood glue going here.
18:38But I think the wood to wallpaper.
18:40I did it on the other side and it worked way better.
18:42You want to use wood glue.
18:43Second try.
18:45Come on.
18:46Like it?
18:47Yeah.
18:49It's sticking better.
18:50Yeah, this is working better.
18:51Great.
18:52And not the crafting glue.
18:53Yeah, I'll put like a sealant sort of thing on and then we'll put those on.
18:56Look at how cute that is.
18:57Yeah, that's cute.
18:57It's adorable.
18:58This silver looks good with the colors.
18:59Right?
18:59It looks really good.
19:00Okay, so let's get this over here now so we don't ruin it.
19:05Put it on the ground and put some weight on it and let it dry.
19:08So once it's dry, I'll bring it out to the camp and I will install the hooks on it there.
19:13Okay, thanks for your help.
19:14Yeah, you're welcome.
19:14Awesome.
19:15That was fun.
19:15I like that wallpaper a lot.
19:23Morning, guys.
19:24Morning.
19:25So we're about halfway through the build at the McCrath camp on David Pond.
19:30Everything is looking great.
19:31Roof is going on today.
19:33We're ready for windows, ready for trim, siding.
19:36Inside, everything's been reframed.
19:39Kitchen's going to move to the backside, living room in the front.
19:41New second floor system.
19:44Going to be a loft ladder opening right there.
19:46Got the space for the bathroom on the backside.
19:49Our new area for a composting toilet.
19:51Bedroom here.
19:52All the beams have been exposed.
19:55It's looking good.
19:58They got one panel to go on that roof.
20:00I know they're cranking.
20:01Love it.
20:02Next move.
20:02We can start slapping some windows in on that backside.
20:09Right here, Sam.
20:11Yep.
20:14Hold on, Jed.
20:15Sorry.
20:20What up, Jedi?
20:22Morning, Ash.
20:23What's going on?
20:24Roofing and windows?
20:25Roof and windows.
20:28Whoa.
20:29These people are going to be so excited.
20:31This is all open now, and there's so much headroom you can walk straight through.
20:36That's a lot of extra sleeping.
20:38The camp has changed quite a bit since the last time I was here.
20:40It now has a full, true second story.
20:44And much more space for beds with heads.
20:47Heads for beds.
20:48Beds for heads.
20:49That looks good in there, guys.
20:51I wasn't sure how it was going to work out.
20:55Ship's ladder.
20:57Like this.
20:58Okay, so I'll have to at least head it off in here.
21:00So it's basically the width of this in here.
21:03Chase wants me to start working on heading off the opening for the ship's ladder that's
21:09going to access the upstairs loft.
21:15Where's the hole going?
21:16It's going from this point to that point.
21:20Oh, that's a big hole you're cutting.
21:25I see a saw coming this way right now.
21:29Yeah.
21:30Oh!
21:31You guys got it?
21:33We can put a mattress through that.
21:36All she wants are beds.
21:38Beds for heads.
21:39Line them up like sardines.
21:41Boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop.
21:44Yep.
21:45I mean, that's a pretty easy table right here.
21:48A couple of 45 legs off from each side.
21:51Just think of the cards you could play on there.
21:54He's not wrong.
21:55It definitely is a table.
21:58Do I need a table for this cabin?
22:00Yeah.
22:00It's a good size.
22:01You know, in the money you would save?
22:03That's repurposing.
22:04Sure.
22:05Why not?
22:06Come on, Ash.
22:07Help me out.
22:08Whoa!
22:09I do not.
22:10I do not weigh more than you.
22:16Yeah.
22:17Today's cold and the snow reminds me that winter's on its way.
22:23Whoa!
22:24Whoa!
22:25We just want to get these windows closed in, get this place dry, start getting some heat in here.
22:30Is this the right way?
22:32Is this upside down?
22:33Where's your weepies?
22:34Where's your weeps?
22:35I'm looking for them.
22:37I can't see weeps on either side.
22:43Yeah, they go the other way.
22:45Bum, bum, bum!
22:54There it goes.
22:55Blowing out the budget on window.
22:56Oh, yeah.
22:57They go the other way.
22:59What?
22:59No, it goes this way.
23:01Yeah, cold day here at the McGrath camp.
23:03Winter's coming at us and it's coming quick.
23:05We got a goal today to try to get all those windows in for it keeps snowing.
23:10How did new or I catch that?
23:12I don't know.
23:13I don't know.
23:20Gorgeous.
23:25Nice work today.
23:26Great work today.
23:27Got a lot done.
23:28Holy smokes.
23:29Almost beat the snow.
23:31Hopefully that's it for a while.
23:32Can you guys just keep my table safe?
23:34I'm going to store it in here because Ryan is home sick with the flu.
23:37So I will grab it next time.
23:39What's Ryan's flu have to do with the table?
23:40She doesn't want to get the table sick.
23:44It's going to be a sick table.
23:45You're going to have plenty over there.
23:46Nice work today.
23:47Okay.
23:48Let's go get warm.
23:49Let's go home.
23:50Come on, dogs.
24:03Today we're back at the McGrath camp and things are moving along nicely.
24:06We've got the guys siding the exterior and inside they're focused on getting the walls
24:11seeded and putting down the floors.
24:14She'll set this down behind the floor.
24:23Marvelous.
24:27Hi.
24:28Hi Oshila.
24:30Oh, oh, you cut this down.
24:31Big time, huh?
24:32Yeah.
24:32Didn't you see the sign you came in?
24:34Home of West Gardner Master Furniture Maker.
24:36So today we are at the West Gardner Master Furniture Maker's shop,
24:41AKA Ryan's shop.
24:43So this was the hole for the ladder, right?
24:46Yeah.
24:46And we are making a coffee table for the McGrath family.
24:49Because this space is only for sleeping and hanging out,
24:52I don't really think they needed a dining room table.
24:54So I figured we'll make it into a coffee table.
24:57I grabbed the piece and brought it here.
24:59I showed Ryan, told him what I was looking for.
25:01So he kind of got it ready.
25:06You couldn't screw the legs straight onto the tabletop because they would have gone straight through it.
25:11So we just reinforce the underneath.
25:13Right, then your legs go to that.
25:14Ask the furniture makers, know this stuff.
25:17Is that what you are?
25:18Ryan and I work together like married a couple.
25:20Pretty much, that's how it sums it up.
25:22No, no, no.
25:22We got to screw these for us.
25:23I know, I know.
25:24I'm just seeing if I'm going to like it before I let you screw anything in.
25:28He drives me crazy.
25:29Got another TT25.
25:31By the time I grab it, you will have it already done.
25:33Yeah.
25:33I drive him crazy.
25:35Legs are last.
25:36I'm cleaning them.
25:37I'm just getting them clean, sir.
25:40Working with your husband is the most fun thing in the world.
25:44But in the end, we come out with a great piece.
25:47This is an heirloom coffee table.
25:49It's a rough cut heirloom.
25:50It's a rough cut heirloom coffee table.
25:52It's going to be amazing.
25:53It's going to be amazing.
25:54It's all in how you finish it.
25:55It's all in how you finish it.
25:56We're going to work our way around.
25:59That's what I was thinking we should do.
26:00Work our way around.
26:05Around here, we have tons of parts for everything, including legs for furniture.
26:10So I just went out to the greenhouse and found some legs that were stored out there.
26:16Come on, last one.
26:22Oh!
26:24Would you look at that.
26:25That's a big coffee table.
26:26I'm glad we made it smaller.
26:28Because it's big.
26:29You're welcome.
26:30You're welcome.
26:30You're welcome.
26:32Starting today, I did not think Ryan was a master furniture maker.
26:36After today, I will say that he's becoming a master.
26:40It looks really nice and you did a great job.
26:42He's like, I don't know, what's a couple of levels below master?
26:47That's what he is.
26:48This level.
26:49He's a sub-sub master.
26:52Good job.
26:52Imagine that.
26:53What?
26:53After all that.
26:55Okay, a lot nice.
26:56Thanks.
26:56Teamwork.
27:07Good morning.
27:09Good morning.
27:10Woman here.
27:11Yeah, so it's the final week at McGrath Camp on David Pond.
27:17Wow.
27:18It is chilling.
27:19Since we were here last, the siding is done.
27:21The guys busted that out.
27:23Oh no.
27:25Not me.
27:26Floors are down.
27:27All the walls are closed in.
27:29The electrician came, put in all the electrical.
27:31We got the composting toilet installed and today we need to get the sink cut in.
27:39Oh no.
27:40Not me.
27:42Yeah, I do.
27:43Get the chimney installed.
27:46Lovely.
27:50Marvelous.
27:51And we also determined that it was a smokehouse.
27:53When we originally did demo, that's super intentional.
27:58Airflow.
27:58It's to allow air flow.
28:00Yeah.
28:00Hang your fish or whatever.
28:02And so we saved all of the old slats, brought them back to the woodshop, polyarthaned them,
28:12and it's worth showing off.
28:13So we're putting them along the wall where we found them, where we built the new bathroom
28:23area for the composting toilet.
28:26Looks cool.
28:27Okay.
28:28So there's that one.
28:31Yeah, so I had an inside-outside job today.
28:35Chase wanted me to install a metal chimney.
28:38We are good here.
28:44So they can reinstall the cook stove.
28:48Okay.
28:49It's a heavily insulated stainless steel chimney.
28:54Of course, I had to pick a chimney on the coldest day of the year, you know.
28:57Hey, one, right?
28:58Put a chimney in, they said.
28:59What a great idea.
29:00That has a non-flammable material on the inside.
29:04Morning.
29:05Morning.
29:06What's up?
29:06It looks awesome.
29:07What's up?
29:07Wow.
29:08What a difference.
29:08Pretty much have all snapped together and lock it together.
29:13Holy cow.
29:15Wow.
29:17Mother of pearl.
29:18It's cold.
29:19And it's a much easier and less expensive way than going with a masonry chimney.
29:24Okay.
29:25Hold on.
29:26Do I just put a level on it on there?
29:27Well, I got one right here.
29:29Luckily, I had Steve to help me finish the rest of it.
29:34Okay.
29:35So it wasn't too bad.
29:37We're good.
29:42Marvelous.
29:43Yeah.
29:43So the McGrath's really are using this for sleeping space.
29:48But they asked for a small kitchenette.
29:52So they gave them countertops, a small sink that they can bring a gallon jug of water.
29:59Baby.
30:00And then they'll have a tank underneath to collect the water and dump it off site.
30:05But it's no plumbing for the kitchen or the bathroom.
30:08All right.
30:09So this is what we need to do today.
30:11Let's put our coat hooks onto this coat rack.
30:13Okay.
30:13Yeah.
30:14We pretty much had one job to do today.
30:15How many coat racks do you have?
30:17Five, I believe.
30:17And that was to finish putting together the coat rack and install it.
30:21I suggest it goes near the door.
30:23That's where coats usually come off.
30:24Yeah.
30:24It doesn't look like there's a spot big enough because they got the chimney.
30:27And then on the other side of the door, there's not enough space.
30:30So.
30:31What about right here?
30:32I'd put it right here on this wall if it was me.
30:33Yeah.
30:33But what if I have a big piece of furniture that I want that needs to go up that wall?
30:36Oh, I'd put it right here under the stairs.
30:38What if I have something underneath the stairs that needs to go?
30:40Yeah, look.
30:41There's a lot of consideration.
30:42Under the stairs.
30:43Not in the way of anything.
30:44Jedi, hit the gavel, please.
30:46No.
30:48Case closed.
30:49Parader.
30:49I'm gonna be making my own dinner tonight, Anna.
30:53Yeah, so I got lucky because I'm on engine reserve.
30:56She took me on the design team.
30:57Four.
30:58All right.
30:58But if I had to go through the application process.
31:00Put your hand right here.
31:01Okay.
31:02Beautiful.
31:02I think it would be a lot of like measuring.
31:05Look.
31:06Oh, we nailed it.
31:06Look at that.
31:07It's perfect.
31:08No, it would be like, do you like dogs?
31:10Yes.
31:11Can you come to my warm car?
31:12Yes.
31:13Do you mind sleeping in and getting to work a little bit later?
31:16Yes.
31:16And leaving a little bit earlier?
31:17Yes.
31:18Oh, geez.
31:18I just poked you.
31:19And my last interview question I ask everybody is how many dogs is too many dogs on a job site?
31:24Impossible.
31:24There's never enough dogs.
31:26You're hired.
31:27Beautiful.
31:27Let's go find a place to put it.
31:29What's wrong with that?
31:30That's wasted space and your shoes could go right here.
31:32Well, sometimes it's function over.
31:34It's not really showcasing it.
31:35Why don't we cut a little bit off each side and put it right here?
31:38Or we could just cut it in half and put one here.
31:40Yes.
31:40That's what I would do.
31:41Cut it right in half and it'll be even.
31:43Perfect.
31:44Yes.
31:45And I'm really proud of us because we thought about it.
31:47We went over here, went over there.
31:49So that's going to give you about 13.
31:5212 and 3 quarters.
31:52Yeah, 12 and 3 quarters.
31:54Oh, look at that.
31:55And we thought about the future like a good design team would.
31:58That's how you problem solve.
32:02And then we realized, let's just cut it in two and get two out of one.
32:08Beautiful.
32:09I feel like I really just thought I could design it.
32:11I was in that mindset.
32:12That looks amazing.
32:13Like when I had that in my hand, I was like, what's going to go here later?
32:15What are they going to do there?
32:16Look at the color pop.
32:18And then we'll put this one over here.
32:20Oh, I kind of like that too.
32:21There you go.
32:22That's not a bad idea.
32:23Yeah, see?
32:24I don't even need to be in this interview.
32:25Bye.
32:25I was so proud of us.
32:27I was feeling it like we came in.
32:28Okay.
32:30Beautiful.
32:33Boom.
32:33We did a good job.
32:35Nice job, guys.
32:36Looks good.
32:37Family's big thing.
32:38Heads and beds.
32:39Heads and beds.
32:40Got a lot of space up there.
32:41Good job, everybody.
32:42Nice work.
32:43Let's go.
32:52It's a beautiful winter day here in Fayette.
32:56My team and I were here yesterday battling through the rain to get this place staged.
33:01We managed to do it.
33:02It looks great.
33:08One thing that they really wanted was more bed space.
33:12So, I was able to put three twin beds upstairs.
33:16There is a seating area that they could put another bed if they wanted.
33:19So, there's plenty of space up there for more heads on beds.
33:24Is this your table?
33:26Yeah, you like it?
33:27It's beautiful.
33:28It is.
33:28We ready to do this?
33:30We are.
33:31Okay.
33:31Ba-dum-bum-bum.
33:32Let's go.
33:33Okay.
33:35Are you excited about this?
33:37I am beyond excited.
33:39Now we get to see it finally.
33:41Yep.
33:42Wow.
33:43Oh!
33:44Oh my gosh.
33:48Metal roof.
33:50I can get rid of my snow rate.
33:52Wow.
33:53Hello.
33:54Hello.
33:55Welcome back.
33:57Oh, love, love that color.
34:00This is incredible.
34:01I love the color, but it's also wood.
34:04So, it's low maintenance.
34:07Hi.
34:08Hi.
34:09I'm Ashley.
34:10We didn't get to meet you last time.
34:11No, I was just out of commission.
34:12Good to see you.
34:14Hi, guys.
34:14Good to see you.
34:15You know, we don't want to have to be painting it all the time.
34:17We don't want to have to worry about coming up and getting snow off the roof.
34:21The whole exterior has just made it not just beautiful, but easier to maintain.
34:25So, that original structure, that timber frame.
34:29Yeah.
34:30It's very old.
34:30That's what I thought.
34:31And extremely well built.
34:32Yeah.
34:33And there were so many different layers that we peeled off shingles.
34:38There was a layer of old sheathing boards over that.
34:40We peeled those off.
34:41There were slats all around the whole thing, and then peeled those off.
34:47There was wallpaper, for lack of a better term, all along the whole thing.
34:51I mean, it's gone through many, many different transformations, which is fascinating.
34:55Yeah.
34:55But it was all good and solid, so it was easy to lift it up.
34:59So, we squared it up.
35:00Oh.
35:01Beautiful.
35:01Looks great.
35:06Yeah, those timbers look like it could hold it together pretty well.
35:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:10But they also made it a little challenging, because with the timber frame roof structure,
35:14it was hard to kind of figure out how to make that work.
35:16So, we ended up taking the whole roof system off and reframed an all-new roof.
35:20Just to get more headroom upstairs, we went with a nice pine siding, nice natural stain.
35:26Oh, it's gorgeous.
35:27All new windows throughout.
35:29I know.
35:29I was like, well, it won't be as drafty as those duct tape windows we had.
35:33New metal roof, new chimney.
35:36Terrific.
35:37I can't wait to see the inside.
35:39Let's go inside.
35:40Can't wait.
35:40Let's do it.
35:41We have more to tell you.
35:48Oh, oh, oh, oh.
35:51So beautiful.
35:52Oh, my goodness.
35:53Oh, that is gorgeous.
35:55Oh, oh, look at the stove.
35:58I love the little sit-in look, too.
36:01Oh, I won't cry.
36:02It'll freeze on my shoes.
36:04But, holy moly.
36:06Look at the timbers.
36:08I love this.
36:11Oh, I love it.
36:13Oh, look at that.
36:14That's so cool.
36:15It is.
36:16Oh, my goodness.
36:17And it feels so much bigger, because the height of the ceilings.
36:20Yeah.
36:21The structure is gorgeous.
36:23Yeah, so our thoughts are it was possibly the ceiling.
36:25It's actually a smokehouse for an old farm in the area, because it had these slats.
36:30Yeah.
36:30Oh, yeah.
36:31Along both sides.
36:33Oh.
36:33And they were intentionally cut to have the grooves between them.
36:37Yeah.
36:38And the outside is pretty charred black on the boards.
36:41Oh, it's so beautiful.
36:44And if you look right there, that's old wallpaper.
36:47Yes, here.
36:47I took it off and put it on a board.
36:49A little bit of history.
36:50Just so you can have a little bit of history.
36:52Yeah.
36:53I'm the towel scooper-upper all the time.
36:55It's a nice pop of color, and she used it in a cute, creative way.
36:59Also, we had to cut this hole out.
37:02Yep.
37:02When that hole came down, it was a big, huge piece.
37:04So we filled this nice coffee table over there.
37:07Oh.
37:07Out of that piece.
37:08A centenarian.
37:09Right?
37:10It feels like they brought a lot of personality out of that space.
37:14Just how much of it was reused and showcased.
37:18So we put those slats back on the wall.
37:22Oh, yeah.
37:22And that's where they came from.
37:24And, you know, they were so brittle.
37:25So we carefully took it all down, brought them back to the shop,
37:28put a coat of polyurethane just to seal them up.
37:30Yep.
37:30And then once the wall was up, we put them back up.
37:32And you've got a compost and toilet.
37:34A little privacy there for that.
37:36Phenomenal.
37:36It's phenomenal.
37:41Oh, my goodness.
37:43Oh, my goodness.
37:44This is the best.
37:46Oh.
37:46Oh.
37:47Wow.
37:48Look at that view.
37:50Yeah.
37:50This is incredible.
37:52Just how pretty and sunny it is up there.
37:54Yeah.
37:55I can see fights over who's going to get what nook and what cranny,
37:59but how many beds are up there.
38:01We have plenty of rum.
38:03Plenty of rum.
38:04Yes.
38:04This is much bigger than I thought it would be up here.
38:07And then we've been talking about the boat ladder a lot to our grandchildren
38:10because our youngest one, when it was time to come down the other ladder,
38:14he would start crying.
38:15And so he's going to be ecstatic.
38:18Yeah.
38:18Well, again, the old timber frame roof system, it was so low and those beams were in the way.
38:25Once they started stripping it back, they were rotted anyways.
38:27Yeah.
38:28Yeah.
38:28So that pretty much made the decision.
38:30Yeah.
38:30The entire roof came off and just a little bit of pitch to let windows in this side.
38:35Just went with the exposed beams, exposed framing.
38:38Again, just reusing what was here as much as possible.
38:41I'm still just blown away because hearing how much more history and being able to see it
38:46physically is so cool.
38:49It gives it such a unique feel for this space that we've already spent so much of our history.
38:55I just love the wood.
38:57The variations is so great.
38:59Yeah.
39:00And so to be able to see its own history is incredible.
39:03Wow.
39:04That was fun.
39:05No longer the little shack on the pond.
39:07I know.
39:08You don't have to say that anymore.
39:10No.
39:11We had $50,000 and 10 weeks to get the project completed.
39:15Our work here is done.
39:17So here are the keys.
39:19You're very welcome.
39:20You're very welcome.
39:21It's beautiful.
39:21Enjoy this with your family.
39:22Thank you so much.
39:23We have a great time spending time with family up here.
39:27And I think of the people that have gone before us that are no longer with us.
39:32And just think about how happy they would be to see this camp continue on.
39:37And it just makes me proud that we saved it instead of tear it down and just build something
39:44new.
39:47Thank you Maine Cabin Masters so much for making my dream come true.
39:50Thank you Cabin Masters.
39:52Cheers.
39:53Cheers x!
