00:021992 Test match.
00:05The Western East have won a magnificent victory.
00:10That's a long time ago.
00:12They have won by 52 runs.
00:14They have maintained their phenomenal record on this ground.
00:19In 2021, what about 29 years? Man!
00:26Well, I can recall that it was my first Test match as captain of the Western East cricket team.
00:31South Africa had just been reintroduced back into international cricket
00:34and playing their first Test match since.
00:37And so, obviously, it was a very important Test match for South Africa.
00:43And, of course, it was for us.
00:45I had been criticised earlier in a previous World Cup
00:49where, when we played South Africa in last, when I said it was just another game.
00:53So, obviously, it was on a bit of pressure.
00:55There was some controversy because Anderson Cummings was not selected.
01:01And Kenny Benjamin came in and replaced him.
01:03And Antiguan, like myself, and, obviously, the Bajans were not happy about it.
01:09And the crowd did not come out to support.
01:12It was weird because, usually, back in those days, Westerners were playing,
01:15you'll have a stadium filled with people, especially on the first day.
01:19And then we went out there and there was nobody there, just a handful of people.
01:24It was disappointing for us because, I think, at that time, the crowds,
01:29we used to please the crowds.
01:30We used to love seeing all the shenanigans in the crowd.
01:35That time, King Dial, all them things.
01:37We would love seeing that thing.
01:39So, it was disappointing for us that they decided not to support us.
01:43Well, we were kind of surprised and disappointed as well
01:48because, I mean, it was a historical test match.
01:51And, of course, playing in Barbados, we expect the Oval to be filled, really.
01:58South Africa just came back into international cricket
02:01after 20 odd years in isolation.
02:06And, for me, there were a bunch of rookies.
02:08Because, apart from Captain Kepler Wesleyan, who played for Australia,
02:11all the other ten guys were making the debut.
02:15So, we expected to just, well, I wouldn't say walk over.
02:19We expect to beat them, and quite convincingly and easily.
02:23We got a bunch of rookies.
02:24I mean, we were still the best team in the world.
02:27I don't think we underestimated them, but I think they lifted their game
02:31because they knew who they were playing against,
02:33and they wanted to win badly.
02:35So, they put everything into it.
02:37We didn't know as much about them as they knew about us.
02:41They caught us on the hop a little bit,
02:42and I think one of the better innings I've seen in Test cricket is
02:45Andrew Hudson's 160 odd.
02:49So, they had us on the back foot on that, going into that fifth day.
02:53You know, in those days, there was a rest day in between.
02:57And I remember that we were on a boat cruise,
03:00and they were celebrating, shirts off, like, well, it's all over.
03:05And, you know, we like a party as West Indians, but we couldn't
03:08because we were focusing on how we're going to win this game.
03:12Other than Brian is going to take them on a Joy Roger and drunken them.
03:15Other than that.
03:16I love dancing, and I love Calypso music, and I love the Joy Roger.
03:20So, you know, we were there, and we were very subdued
03:23because, obviously, we were losing a Test match.
03:26And the South Africans were looking very happy.
03:28They were drinking, they were laughing, chatting,
03:31and they were in a great place.
03:34And at the time, there was a very famous Calypso song by Gypsy.
03:39Captain, the ship is sinking.
03:41Now, usually, you go on the Joy Roger.
03:44I mean, we have so many hits, Calypso and Soka hits in the Caribbean.
03:48If a song is very popular, you hear it twice in the night.
03:50But for some reason, the DJ, who obviously was a Bajan,
03:54keep playing that song, and I felt that that song was being played for me.
03:57Captain, the ship is sinking.
04:00Oh boy, I tell you.
04:01And it was really tough.
04:03But then, suddenly, when I looked at the South Africans,
04:05and I see they were having so much fun, something came to me.
04:07I felt vigorized.
04:10I felt like something is going to happen.
04:12I said, they're celebrating too much.
04:13Something is going to happen.
04:16Well, I took two on the fourth evening.
04:21Hudson, I think it was, got a brilliant 160 the first innings.
04:26You know, so to dismiss him.
04:27Did he get off the mark?
04:29I can't remember.
04:30Probably for Doc.
04:31That was very satisfying.
04:32Because, you know, he was right up here with a brilliant 160.
04:35And then, I brought him back to earth, you know.
04:39He was Sir Richardson's first test match as captain of a test match.
04:44Right?
04:45And he was on tremendous pressure.
04:46I mean, take a look from Sir Viv, who has been so successful.
04:51I mean, it was a big shoot to fill.
04:52And we were determined that we're never going to lose this game,
04:55no matter what.
04:58We were a unit.
04:59We were all, all for one and one for all at that time.
05:02Because we knew that everything happened on the field.
05:06And that we had to support everyone, each other on the field.
05:08We played for the person next to us.
05:10So, we were going out there and making sure that we,
05:14down in the back here, we're going to take all the catches from,
05:16from the bowlers.
05:17Or we're going to stop the, the boundaries.
05:19Or whatever the case is, we have to leave it all on the field.
05:23And that was our, our thing at that time.
05:25You've got to leave everything on the field.
05:27Good morning to you all from Kensington Oval.
05:29On the last day of this wonderful test match for the BP SA Challenge.
05:34South Africa, at 1.22 for two, needs 79 more runs to win
05:38on a wearing pitch with eight wickets in hand.
05:41The West Indies are not enjoying their situation.
05:44Richie Richardson, the captain, there he is.
05:46He's got a lot to think about.
05:48This is a proud record.
05:50No defeat in a test match here at Kensington Oval for 57 years and two months.
05:55And yet, before the end of today, that record could so easily have gone.
06:01Kepler and I are going to have to bat well.
06:02We don't want any dramas today.
06:04And if we can bat anywhere near as well as we batted yesterday afternoon,
06:08I think we should be okay.
06:09At the back of your mind, you know that, look,
06:13eight wickets, you know, less than a hundred runs,
06:16you know, you've got to bat the bat inside.
06:19But our approach was a positive one.
06:21We believed.
06:22We had a very good meeting the evening before,
06:24and we all believed.
06:26And that's why we prayed.
06:27We believed that we could do it.
06:28Even though at the back of your mind you said,
06:30boy, your bat is against the wall.
06:32But we stuck to a task.
06:34We went out there believing that we could win.
06:37And throughout the day, I just kept reminding the guys,
06:40we can do this.
06:41We can do this.
06:41We're going to do this.
06:42You know, we were going through emotions.
06:44Nothing was happening.
06:47And, you know, I said to Courtney,
06:49Courtney, you've got to take a break now.
06:50I'm going to want to come here.
06:51And he said, no, no, Skipper.
06:52I'm okay, I'm okay.
06:54Okay, I'll give him another one.
06:55I'll be bowling pretty well, but nothing happening.
06:59You know, Courtney Bowl,
07:01but he's fifth over.
07:02I said, Courtney, no, no, you're missing the plan.
07:06He said, no, no, no, Skipper.
07:07No, no, leave me, man.
07:08Leave me.
07:08When I looked at him, he was sweating
07:09and he was like possessed.
07:10And his tears running down his face.
07:13And the tears to me looked like blood.
07:15He just looked.
07:15He looked.
07:16I said, man, don't leave him, man.
07:17And I think he was the one who made the first breakthrough
07:20on that morning.
07:24But he out, yes, he's gone.
07:26Captain Vessels caught there by Laro.
07:28Driving it a wide one.
07:29That really is the start above all else
07:32that the West Indies wanted.
07:34Vessels has gone for his overnight 74.
07:36And the early breakthrough has come.
07:42We got a wicketer.
07:43The main man who I think at that time was Kepler.
07:46I think he was the main wicket that we needed that morning early
07:49because he could guide them.
07:50He was the experienced man.
07:52And when Brian took that catch load down there,
07:55then everything just built up.
07:57The emotions started to get higher.
07:59And you can see these two guys started to run in harder
08:02and give what we know they can give.
08:06So with the other two or three catches from David Williams,
08:09we knew that we were on a roll now.
08:12So we had to finish it off.
08:14We were unsung.
08:15We were determined that, look, we were going to do this.
08:18And we couldn't afford to drop any catches.
08:20We had to be sharp.
08:21And it was a top-class performance,
08:25especially by Kirtley and Courtney.
08:28So we knew the team plan.
08:30And so there was not a lot of discussion going on
08:34because we knew what to do.
08:35The captain had faith in us.
08:37The team had faith in us.
08:38You know, and we had some brilliant feelers,
08:41you know, in the slipcourt.
08:42Brian Lau, Phil Simmons,
08:44he's got a top-quality slip feelers.
08:50Is he gone?
08:52Yes, he's gone.
08:53Caught behind.
08:54And Cronje can't believe it.
08:55He's just standing there,
08:56but that's the second wicket down this morning.
08:59Cronje has gone.
09:01Caught behind of his 13th ball,
09:03this time from the bowling of Ambrose.
09:09Brilliant.
09:10Brilliant catch.
09:11Brilliant.
09:12So Williams has taken two magnificent catches this morning.
09:16The West Indies have taken three in all.
09:18And Kaeper goes without scoring.
09:20And it's 131 now for five.
09:25David, how are the nerves now?
09:26Very free.
09:27Very, very, very free.
09:29It's all happening out there now.
09:31You must be extremely happy.
09:33Three wickets have gone down this morning.
09:35What, for just 14 runs?
09:37Well, our boys have played very well so far this morning.
09:41Particularly Walsh has been getting the ball to cut back into the batsman quite appreciably.
09:46And they're having difficulties negotiating him.
09:51He's got him.
09:52Kirsten has played it on.
09:54Walsh has got another wicket.
09:55That's the one the West Indies wanted.
09:57Kirsten goes for 52.
09:59South Africa are 142 for six.
10:02They need still another 59 runs to win this match.
10:05And they now have four wickets left.
10:07They had started to panic as well.
10:09We saw that.
10:09And once we saw that they were panicking, we had them.
10:12And that just gave us more momentum, more impetus to really do the demolition job.
10:19This really is a collapse of major proportions.
10:22And the final twist to what has been an extraordinary day as cricket.
10:26I know you're a confident man normally, Geoffrey, about your own opinions.
10:29You've been saying for some time South Africa would win this test match.
10:33Can you honestly say so now?
10:34That you think that's still your view?
10:37No, that's the beauty of cricket, isn't it?
10:39It can make anybody look a fool, make anybody's judgment be wrong.
10:47He's gone, he's gone.
10:48Quickly caught there by Adams at short leg.
10:51And so Snell is out for naught.
10:53Seven wickets are down.
10:55South Africa in deeper trouble.
10:58Peter Snell's waiting, caught by Adams on the ball.
11:03Oh, it bowled him. A marvellous Yorker.
11:06Ambrose can't believe it.
11:08And Richardson is out.
11:10Filled by Ambrose.
11:11Ambrose's fourth wicket.
11:17I mean, because once we knew we'd get down to the last one or two wickets,
11:22it was only a matter of time.
11:25He's gone. That's the ninth wicket.
11:28Richardson goes.
11:301.48 for nine.
11:32And the West Indies now are within sight of a quite remarkable victory.
11:38A stunning turnaround.
11:39And the Barbadian spectators who've seen the West Indies win so frequently here at Tinsington Oval, now right behind Ambrose.
11:50The West Indies have won a magnificent victory.
11:54They have won by 52 runs.
11:56They have maintained their phenomenal record on this ground of never having lost a test match since 1935.
12:03This is their 11th in succession.
12:07The spectators come on the ground to hail their heroes.
12:13Going for a souvenir stump, you know.
12:15That might have been it.
12:16Maybe to my follow through.
12:18Grab a stump or something.
12:19That could have been it.
12:20You know, but I mean, I was so in the moment of winning that, I mean, nothing else mattered for
12:25me and the team.
12:26And I mean, there was such a fantastic victory.
12:30You know, we all ran around, we held hands and we felt good.
12:35We felt good.
12:35The beer afterwards was so nice.
12:39Going round the ground, everybody was, you know, I think all of us were close to tears.
12:43And because of where we had come from that morning to winning the game, I think we were all close
12:50to tears.
12:50And there was a lot of emotion because we saw ourselves as representing the West Indies.
12:56We didn't see ourselves as representing Trinidad or Antigua or, you know, West Indies.
13:02And for the crowds not to be there, there was a lot of emotion.
13:04So it just spilled over into us winning.
13:08And as we went round the ground, it was just a sign of unity.
13:13A sign of the fact that we are together no matter what happens.
13:16You're the guys that we have.
13:17We believe in ourselves.
13:18Even though a lot of people won us off, we would do it.
13:21And what about Courtney Walsh?
13:23Sensational.
13:24Absolutely fantastic.
13:25Which was the moment that you really knew you'd won this?
13:27Well, all along, I talked to you with me.
13:29I never gave up.
13:31I'm not a fitter.
13:31I never quit.
13:32I'm a strong person.
13:34Despite what, I'm going to give everything.
13:35But how sad all the people of Barbados weren't here to see you?
13:38Well, no comments, sorry.
13:40Wonderful test match.
13:40You know, I still love the people of the Caribbean.
13:42I know they love us all the way and they're going to be behind us.
13:44And what a wonderful test match.
13:45A great advertisement for Test cricket.
13:47Great match.
13:47Great match.
13:47Great match.
13:48Great match.
13:48Richie, well done.
13:49The champagne corks are popping already.
13:51I can hear them.
13:52Yes.
13:53To all the people of the West Indies, Antigua.
13:56One love.
13:56Unite.
13:57Unity strength.
13:58Stick with us.
13:58We need your help.
14:09Come all humanity.
14:11We need a quick medicine.
14:11Come.
14:12We need a little coffee coffee.
14:13Let's take a little coffee coffee.
14:14So, let's go.
14:14So, let's Segura and Hazuri pick a look.
14:14You
