LENNIE, 24, and Phil, 60, have a 34-year age gap. Their unusual love story began three years ago when they crossed paths at work. "We worked in a rest home," Lennie explained. "Phil was gardening. He looked like a hard-working man, and I hadn't had a hard working man before, so that drew me to him." He didn't pick up on her hints of flirtation, joking that she would "often break things so that I could come and fix them." Finally, Lennie decided to face her attraction head-on and make a move, messaging him about her crush. But Phil only fully believed it when she approached him asking for a "kiss and a cuddle." They are now happily in love, moved in together quickly and now have a baby together. Friends and family have mostly accepted the relationship but the online world is a different story. When Lennie posted about their big age gap, the comment section of her post blew up. She explained, "There was this trend going on about age gaps, they were only like maybe 5 to 12 years. I was like, okay, we're going to say it now." Adding, "That didn't make a lot of people happy. I always get quite rude comments." These critiques include, "Stop, her and grandpa are so cute together", "Red flag, so much potential wasted" and "If my dad came home with someone born in 2001, I'd cut him off."

00:00People judge us because of our 34 year age gap.
00:03I'm Phil and I'm 60.
00:05I'm Lenny.
00:06I'm 24.
00:07She's my missus.
00:08I always get comments like, that's weird, man.
00:12Age, red flag, so much potential wasted.
00:16I was 23.
00:18I've got a lot of comments saying that the baby's going to have to go to school and tell
00:21everyone that her dad died because he was so old.
00:24He looks like her grandpa.
00:25My friend Brendan's coming over today to talk about our relationship.
00:30A little bit apprehensive, just with the whole age gap and Phil having kids as well.
00:36Didn't want her to get hurt again.
00:39I'm Lenny.
00:40I'm 24 and my man is 60.
00:43We met at Warwick in like a rest home and Phil was gardening and he looked like a hard working
00:50man and hadn't had a hard working man before so that kind of drew me to him.
00:57I like the colour he got.
00:58I always liked an older man.
01:00Ooh.
01:01Lovely strong colour.
01:02I've only really been in one other relationship.
01:06Often you would break things so that I could come and fix them.
01:09Well, not fully break things.
01:10This door handle's falling off.
01:13I couldn't fix that.
01:14Yeah.
01:14Do you want me to help paint?
01:16Um.
01:17That sounds like a no.
01:19And then I just messaged him and he just wasn't getting the hint.
01:23Until you come up and ask for a kiss and a cuddle.
01:26Yep.
01:27I got it then.
01:27It was all over after then.
01:28Yeah.
01:29Pretty much.
01:30It was so young, beautiful, gorgeous.
01:32It didn't really occur to me that all that flirting and banter was actually, yeah, flirting
01:38and banter.
01:39Oh, yeah, because he'd walk into the staff room and say, hi, handsome.
01:43Yeah, I'd be looking behind me to see who handsome was.
01:47Who's he talking to?
01:50How old really is he, isn't he?
01:52I was just turning 21 and Phil was about 56.
01:56We've been together three years now.
01:59So Brendan's coming over today to talk about what he thinks about our relationship.
02:05My friend Brendan wasn't so sure about the age gap and how quickly things were moving.
02:11I'm apprehensive because I want him to like me and approve of me and Lenny.
02:16So Brendan, what did you think about mine and Phil's relationship at the start?
02:20At the start, it was definitely apprehensive.
02:26Especially with not meeting Phil before, you know, I guess you had told me before you were
02:31seeing Phil.
02:33And then with how quickly everything was moving.
02:37I think it was like not even a week later, you had rung me and told me that Phil was
02:40moving
02:40in with his son.
02:42Is it the right move for you?
02:44Mm-hm.
02:45I've got other children, yeah.
02:48I've got a son who's 15.
02:50He lives with us here.
02:51I think there's another thing why we work so well is because Lenny's been so amazing
02:56with him.
02:58Well, I appreciate your concern, but we're very good.
03:02Mm-hm.
03:03I think it just moved so fast because it just was the right thing to do and it kind of
03:08just…
03:08It had a mind of its own, didn't it?
03:10It wasn't fast for us though.
03:13It was quite comfortable.
03:15People talk online about having an age gap about like five to seven years and that being
03:21like a problem.
03:22I'm like, oh.
03:24Is it?
03:25It was like this trend going on about age gaps.
03:29I was like, okay, we're going to say it now.
03:32And yeah, that didn't make a lot of people happy.
03:35No.
03:36I always get quite rude comments.
03:38Girl, you look like a teenager.
03:40What is that old dude doing with you?
03:43Thank you for saying I look young.
03:46This entire situation cannot be serious.
03:49He met her at daycare.
03:51She was one of the kids.
03:52That's so savage.
03:54So he was 35 when you were born.
03:56That's weird, man.
03:57Are you looking for a father figure or something?
04:01Age red flag.
04:02Someone else said, there's no way that's true lol.
04:05And I said, don't know what to tell you, Shannon.
04:06These age gaps getting way out of control.
04:09Stop, her and grandpa are so cute together.
04:12If my dad came home with someone born in 2001, I'd cut him off.
04:19Get back out the door.
04:21Is he rich or just normal?
04:24So much potential wasted.
04:28Is he talking about you or me?
04:29Me.
04:31I get comments like, oh, I bet he's got money.
04:34I was like, if he had money, we wouldn't be living like this.
04:37Just wait till he's 80 and you're 45, then we'll see if it lasts.
04:41I think a lot of the comments end up getting flagged and deleted of them calling you a ****.
04:48That upset me.
04:49It's putting quite a nasty taint on things.
04:53Yeah.
04:54Like, I was a legal adult.
04:57I think we find the comments online funny more than anything.
05:03Like, for us, they seem absurd.
05:07We just can't take them seriously.
05:09Well, they don't really know us.
05:11No.
05:12They only see, like, what, like a 10-second video.
05:17People might judge, but they don't know.
05:19I didn't go looking for someone who was 24, 34 years younger than me.
05:25And you didn't go specifically looking for someone quite that old.
05:29What's brought us together is the fact that, you know, we get on so well and we love each other.
05:36As long as Phil treats you right, like, you know, that's all that I could ask for.
05:42You know, Phil treats me very good.
05:44Make sure I've always got everything I need and everything I want, which is nice.
05:49Just, like, tell people, like, do what you want.
05:52Like, it's your life.
05:53You don't know how long you're here for.
05:55Definitely my whole opinion changed after meeting him for the first time.
06:00It was, you know, it was good.
06:02Like, it felt comfortable.
06:04It felt like Lenny was definitely happy.
06:06You're definitely happy.
06:07And I guess it just eased some of the nerves that I had.
06:12How was bringing Dochi into the world?
06:14And how were people's reactions with everything in her?
06:18How old were you when you fell pregnant?
06:19Um, I was 23.
06:21Did it come as a shock to you guys when Lenny found out she was pregnant?
06:26Oh, well, we were really excited.
06:27It was, it was, um, we're both so happy.
06:30We have the baby.
06:31She's just over three months old now.
06:33Yeah.
06:34I didn't think we could have a baby, but.
06:36Yep.
06:36You're still working, so.
06:38Still working.
06:38Just more like the online judgement.
06:42Everyone's saying that Phil won't see her grow up.
06:44And I always think like, what, like five good years are better than 20 really bad years anyway.
06:51When I posted that the baby was here or like when I was pregnant, I got a lot of comments
06:55saying that,
06:56Oh, you won't see the baby grow up.
06:58The baby's going to have to go to school and tell everyone that her dad died because he was so
07:03old.
07:03Yeah.
07:04Yeah.
07:05I was like, it's a bit savage.
07:06Yeah.
07:07Whenever I get a comment talking about like, oh, like, you're not going to see her grow up,
07:12but like then my mum got dementia when I was like 18, 19, anyway, and I had to put her
07:16in a rest home.
07:17So like, you just never know.
07:19I don't know how old I live for, but the time I've grown, I'm going to make the most of
07:23it.
07:23And the time I have with Lenny and Donny, it's going to be, um, special.
07:28We've already got a really strong bond, you know, like she's already,
07:32she knows who I am.
07:34You know, she, I do a lot of the curing and feeding at night.
07:37So.
07:38Yeah.
07:38Phil does basically all the feeding at night.
07:40Cause I just don't wake up.
07:41No.
07:43See you later.
07:44Bye.
07:45Nice to meet you Phil.
07:46Nice to meet you.
07:47Family are all happy for us.
07:51Don't they?
07:52Yeah.
07:52So to our face anyway.
07:54I think now people don't see the age difference.
07:57They just see, um, you know, me and you and our baby.
08:01Great thing about Phil is just hardworking and loyalty and just helps make me happy when I'm sad.
08:10And he's always there.
08:11It's nice to have so much love around.
08:14These are the best days of my life.
08:16We met and love has just grown.
08:19People can like judge all they want.
08:21It doesn't really change anything.
08:23Yeah.
08:23In our relationship.
08:24Makes me really happy.
08:26Like when I can, um, you know, take care of these two, you know, they mean, they mean everything to
08:31me.
08:46You're right.
08:46I'm sorry you're on ailiar income.
08:47What do you feel like when I could find that?
08:47I hang out?
08:47God's eyes so sweet.
