00:21him and extraditate him to the United States.
00:27In India, Acting President Delsi Rodriguez visited on Friday, June 5, the world's largest
00:33oil refinery to boost energy diets as Venezuela becomes the country's third largest oil supplier.
00:44Israel's Supreme Court ruled against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ban by declaring
00:50that the NDD must allow the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit Palestinian prisoners.
01:02Hello, welcome to From the South. I am Lorena Fong from the Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:07We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:23We begin now with the information. In Bolivia, the leader of the movement towards socialism and former president, Evo Morales,
01:29has denounced a plan orchestrated by the executive branch to legally arrest him and extraditate him to the United States.
01:38Social and former movements in the Cochabamba tropics backed the allegations and revealed the details of the intelligence operation
01:45known as Delta Eñe, whose objective is set to be the capture of the former president.
01:53Morales asserted that Defense Minister Ernesto Justiniano had issued an ultimatum in cabinet meetings, stating,
02:00with me, Evo, until June 13, arrested or dead. This chapter of political persecution against Evo Morales
02:08is driven by the United States government and endorsed by President Rodrigo Paz.
02:20How to get Evo Morales to the United States. Can you imagine? I'd probably be deported. I don't know.
02:30But the government is demanding a cabinet meeting from the Deputy Minister of Social Defence and now Minister of Defence,
02:38Ernesto Pustiniano,
02:42who said, with me, Evo, until June 13, detained or dead.
02:51The Supreme Court of Colombia upheld the 28-year prison sentence against Santiago Uribe, brother of former president,
02:59Álvaro Uribe, for aggravated murder and paramilitary activities in a final appeal.
03:04The ruling identifies him as the leader of the Twelve Apostles, a gang that carried out social cleansing in collusion
03:13with state agents.
03:15The court found him guilty of the murder of Camilo Barrientos, a transportation worker who was killed by hitmen after
03:23being accused by the group of collaborating with the guerrillas.
03:26The investigation, which began in 1995, revealed that Santiago Uribe gathered information for target victims
03:34and financed the network which operated from a room adjacent to a police station.
03:40The court rejected the defence's argument and concluded that the convicted individual acted with full knowledge and intent threatening public
03:48safety and wellbeing.
03:49The case was solved in time to avoid the statute of limitations expiring.
04:00In the same vein, Colombian Senator María José Pizarro Rodríguez emphasized on social media that Santiago Uribe Vélez is a
04:08criminal against humanity
04:10who has been convicted at every level of the judicial system for having led a paramilitary group that murders hundreds
04:18of innocent people.
04:19What does the defender of the paramilitaries have to say?
04:23Colombia will never return to the deadly past that you present.
04:33In Chile, the Carabineros arrested approximately 38 people during protests against the administration of President José Antonio Cast.
04:42The student unions blocked the main avenues of Santiago in protest against budget cuts, and the government's response sparked a
04:49wave of outrage.
04:50After a series of clashes, student federations and various civil society organizations denounced the disproportionate use of force by the
04:59militarized police.
05:00The severity of the oppression left at least six people injured.
05:05In response to complaints about the brutality of the arrests, the Ministry of Security attempted to justify the police action
05:13by confirming that those arrested will face charges of disrupting the public order and obstructing free movement.
05:29Thousands of people marched in Panama to express their opposition to government plans related to mining and environmental pollution.
05:37Environmental groups and civic organizations announced that they will continue their protests, noting that the debate over meaning activities remain
05:46open.
05:46The protests mainly directed against plans to reactivate the confession of the Panama mining company.
05:53The protesting groups are demanding the permanent closure of extractive projects, arguing that it is necessary to protect the environment
06:02and water resources.
06:09The future of the mine has already been decided in the streets by the citizens who took the streets to
06:15protest and by the law, since there is a ruling declaring unconstitutional.
06:20There is no need to form any group of finance ministers or environmental ministers because the mine should already be
06:26closed.
06:28By 2023, when the ruling on law 406 was issued on October 20, 2023, the people continue to protest in
06:37the streets until November 28, when the court ruled law 406 unconstitutional and he wants to reopen the issue of
06:45the mine.
06:45But the people, there is no referendum. There is no further discussion. The people in the street have already said
06:52no to the mine.
06:55The thing is, Molino said he is a president for business owners. They are looking to maximize their profits. The
07:02court was clear and said that the right to life, the right to health and the right to a healthy
07:07environment must be prioritized over private interests.
07:14On a Wednesday, June 3rd, the Honduran National Congress approved a law to protect the interests of the country's large
07:21agro-industrial corporations, violating the wrong rights of farmers and indigenous people.
07:28Our colleague, Gerardo Torres Zelaya, with more information.
07:32Thanks to its conservative majority, the Honduran National Congress passed a law for the strengthening and protection of the agro
07:39-industrial sector, which prioritizes land rights only for large national and foreign companies.
07:45This law completely nullifies the rights established in the agro-reform law and paves the way for a general strategy
07:52of evictions, criminalization of campesinos and repression.
07:58They have approved the law to strengthen the agro-industrial sector, which also covers turism and other areas.
08:08The purpose is to make agricultural lands, regardless of their legal status, available to the agro-industrial sector.
08:24This includes the infamous 10 families who have been denounced.
08:28In other words, there will be significant conflict in the coming months, and there is no doubt that this is
08:35part of a neoliberal project to seize all the resources of the Honduran state at the expense of farmers, women
08:41and indigenous communities.
08:46With this law, Honduras has returned to the legal framework of the military dictatorships that existed before the 1980s, which
08:53were based on protecting the interests of large transnational corporations in agricultural enclaves of the United States.
09:04There is a concern that instead of advancing respect for municipal autonomy, it practically takes us back more than 40
09:11years to the dictatorship.
09:12The municipal law, in this last reform 12 years ago, stipulates that we can carry out expropriations for community services
09:20or public services, such as access to water, roads, electricity services.
09:25When they want to take you out of your house, when they want to take away your land, when they
09:30want to take away opportunities from producers, who, by the way, most of the land in Honduras is in the
09:36hands of a few, and who have to rent or lease to plant our products, we feel threatened.
09:46On May 21st, in the community of Rigores, in the Department of Colón, 20 members of the Campesino Cooperative were
09:52murdered, and it is suspected that the motive of the crime was to evict them from the land where they
09:57farm.
09:58This new law will increase the level of conflict and make campesino groups even more vulnerable.
10:08We are already organizing to meet, to unite, and I do think there will be resistance, as there was in
10:141992 from the Peasant and Indigenous Movement, because this is the second stage of this project, and the peasants and
10:22indigenous people will be left without any possibility or access to agricultural land.
10:30With this new law approved in the National Congress of Honduras, big companies can now take over as much land
10:36as they can by force.
10:38In recent days, we have seen in the country protests of students, teachers, and health workers.
10:43It's very much likely that very soon we'll see the streets of Honduras taken by protests of the campesino movement
10:50that will claim their right to access land and to face the neoliberal policies of this government.
10:55For television in English from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Gerardo Torres Zelaya.
11:01And now we have a short break coming up. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
11:23Welcome back to From the South. We now go to Venezuela's acting president.
11:26Delsi Rodriguez continues her official visit to India, where she is meeting local authorities with the goal of strengthening bilateral
11:34relations between the two countries within the geopolitical context of the global south.
11:39On Thursday, the Venezuelan acting president held the meetings with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister Surahandyan Yashankar
11:48centered on the comprehensive review of the framework for mutual cooperation, with special emphasis on the hydrocarbon sectors.
11:55In this sense, Rodriguez also met with Jardim Singh Puri, India's Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, as part of
12:03an ongoing exchange of initiatives aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation.
12:09Rodriguez arrived in India on June 3, accompanied by high-ranking Venezuelan authorities, and will continue her official visit to
12:17the Asian nation until June 7.
12:26The acting president of the Republic of Venezuela, Delsi Rodriguez, visited the Yamnagar Refinery, the world's largest oil facility, on
12:35Friday, June 5, as part of her visit to India.
12:39The Space Institute refinery is part of the consolidation of a constructive global energy agenda that Venezuela is promoting with
12:47the aim of strengthening the hydrocarbons engine.
12:50The Yamnagar Refinery, owned by Reliance Industries Limited, is one of the most impressive industrial engineering projects on the planet.
12:59The complex is divided into two major plans, one serving the domestic and international markets, and another located within a
13:09special economic zone dedicated to exports.
13:12Earlier, the acting president arrived at the Yamnagar Airport in the state of Jujujarat, where she was received by local
13:21authorities.
13:21It is worth noting that Venezuela became India's third largest oil supplier this month.
13:27The meeting, held with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, June 4, focused on expanding the energy partnership and strengthening
13:36trade ties between the nations.
13:44A Venezuelan delegation is participating in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum to strengthen bilateral relations with Russia.
13:53Under the slogan, Pragmatic Dialogue, the path toward a stable future, the Venezuelan delegation emphasized that the Bolivarian Republic seeks
14:01to establish international relations free from sanctions and blockades.
14:05The delegation also stated that the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum provides an opportunity for nations to engage with one
14:14another based on respect for sovereignty in order to achieve productive development.
14:19In this context, Venezuela's tourism minister Daniela Cabello explained that tourism is one of the country's key economic drivers.
14:32Also in Venezuela on Thursday, the National Assembly unanimously approved the Coffee Promotion and Development Bill, advancing efforts to strengthen
14:41the coffee sector as a strategic area for the country's economic development.
14:46Coffee producers gathered at the National Assembly to attend the second reading of the Coffee Promotion Bill.
14:53During the previous regular session, lawmakers advanced the discussion of five articles of the bill.
14:59This was the result of more than 400 assemblies held up as part of a national consultation process in which
15:08coffee producers contributed their perspective and experience.
15:11The bill aims to strengthen the entire coffee production chain from cultivation and processing to industrialization, commercialization and export and
15:22sustainable consumption.
15:43And move on now to Peru, where the presidential candidate for Juntos por el Peru, Roberto Sanchez, held his campaign
15:51closing event.
15:52Joined by the Peruvian people, who shunted slogans calling for political change in the South American country.
15:59The rally sought to demonstrate the electoral strength of a coalition that presents itself as an alternative to the neoliberal
16:06model imposed over the past decades.
16:09Furthermore, progressive sectors allege that the mainstream media and the establishment have orchestrated a media campaign to prevent the victory
16:18of options that represent the interests of indigenous peoples.
16:22And marginalized majority.
16:24In this, it is worth noting that Roberto Sanchez, former minister of foreign trade and tourism during the Castillo administration,
16:31represents an option that seeks to continue the agenda for change that brought millions of Peruvians to the polls in
16:392021.
16:40And made a hostile Congress that has systematically blocked structural reforms.
16:54Various social organizations and human rights groups in Peru have expressed the rejection of the media campaign promoting blank or
17:02invalid votes in the presidential run of elections.
17:05Citizens groups warned that this electoral strategy only contributes to fragmenting the popular vote indirectly benefiting the right wing candidacy.
17:15Spokespersons pointed out that Keiko Fujimori's candidacy represents an imminent danger of a return to a climate of impunity, corruption
17:23and systematic violations of fundamental freedoms.
17:26In her latest statements during the presidential debate, Fujimori hinted at the possibility of electoral fraud setting the stage to
17:34challenge the election results.
17:36In response to these maneuvers, students, federations and labor unions called for a permanent national mobilization to monitor the counting
17:44of each votes at each polling station.
17:46For his part, on election day, candidate Roberto Sanchez stated that his party will respect the election results and urge
17:54his opponent to do the same.
18:13In other topics, the United States imposed new sanctions against Cuba President Miguel Díaz-Canela as well as against family
18:20members of Raúl Castro, general of the army.
18:23The United States Department of the Treasury also sanctioned President Miguel Díaz-Canela's wife, Liz Cuesta Peraza.
18:30The Office of Foreign Assets Control also included the Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution,
18:37and the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the peoples on the list.
18:41Raúl Alejandro Castro Cali, grandson of the Cuban army, General Raúl Castro, also appeared on the list for the part.
18:49Cuban authorities denounced these actions as part of a narrative from Washington intended to justify the blockade.
18:55In addition, the United States brought charges against the leader of the Cuban Revolution concerning the deaths of four pilots
19:03from the organization Brothers to the Rescue,
19:06an incident announced by Havana as an act of United States terrorism.
19:16Cuba's President Miguel Díaz-Canela addressed the issue on his ex-account he posted.
19:22The United States President has made new threatening statements against Cuba and the Treasury Department that has added the names
19:30of additional Cuban leaders,
19:31organizations, organizations, and companies to an allegiance in sanctions against a list.
19:37These actions aim to reinforce the blockade measures and the scenario of conflict between Cuba and the United States.
19:45This political blindness adds the coercive measures imposed on our country in recent weeks that are designated to harm the
19:53Cuban people.
19:54The aggressiveness and malice of the Yankee government will clash with our determination to confront the worst-case scenarios and
20:02resist the imperial offensive.
20:04We will defend our homeland.
20:13And in his speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia,
20:18Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Oscar Pérez Oliva noted that the energy agenda with Moscow focuses on modernizing the energy system
20:27of the largest of the Antilles.
20:31The energy agenda with Russia's strategy in NATO because it's not only focused on the full supply but also the
20:38modernization of our electricity system.
20:41And above all, on the fundamental goal, we have set ourselves to overcome this situation.
20:47To radically and permanently transform Cuban energy mix so that we don't depend and follow from any country.
20:55We will depend on natural resources, we depend on the sun because the sun cannot be blocked.
21:01And that's the essence.
21:04We go now to our final show break but we'll be back with more from the south. Don't go away.
21:35Welcome back to From the South. We move now to the Middle East.
21:38The Israel Supreme Court ruled against the Zionist government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by declaring that the entity must
21:46allow the ICRC International Committee of the Red Cross to visit Palestinian prisoners.
21:52Israel's Supreme Court unanimously rejected a government policy banning representatives of the ICRC from visiting Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons,
22:02stating that by preventing the Red Cross from visiting prisoners, the government had contravened Israeli and international law.
22:10This decision comes amid growing concerns over the ill treatment of Palestinian detainees in the Zionist prison, which prompted the
22:18human rights organizations to issue a petition against the government policy was the first filed in Israel High Court in
22:27February 2024.
22:28For this part, the ICRC welcomed the decision, saying it was ready to resume its visits.
22:44Authorities report that the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip has caused unprecedented environmental damage threatening Palestinian biodiversity.
22:52The Israeli attack resulted in more than 33 million tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to the annual emission of more
23:00than 7 million vehicles, in addition to the destruction of homes, leaving 60 million tons of rubble in the enclave,
23:08and destroyed 86 percent of the agricultural land industry.
23:12In this regard, Palestinian authorities accused Israel of causing ecological genocide, and of posing a threat to biodiversity in the
23:21occupied territories throughout its expansionist policies.
23:30For this part, the Jordanian foreign ministry condemns Israel's approval of 2,163 new homes in the West Bank settlements,
23:40and describes the measure as a dangerous escalation that undermines the two-state solution.
23:46The government asserts that the occupation perpetuates these actions and obstacles Palestinian sovereignty, a measure that also prevents the creation
23:55of a Palestinian state with the 1967 borders and its Jerusalem as its capital.
24:07Israel continues its aggressions against southern Lebanon, despite the recent fire, injuring at least 12 in strikes near a hospital
24:16in Tireh.
24:16According to Lebanon's national news agency, Israeli warplanes launched the four missiles that struck in the vicinity of the Jabal
24:24Amel Hospital in Tireh, injuring at least 12 people and destroying several buildings.
24:29This comes as the Zionist entity continues its air and ground attacks against the historic region of Tireh in this
24:36sense.
24:37Artillery shielding was also reported at the same time in the town of Deir Hamas.
24:42This latest attack comes just one day after United States authorities announced a new ceasefire agreement between Lebanese and Israel
24:50authorities.
24:58In Iran, people have mobilized for over 90 consecutive nights in support of the Islamic Revolution and of the Ayatollah
25:06Mohtava, Sayyid Khamenei.
25:07Since the start of the joint aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28th, the Iranian
25:14people have responded with popular mobilization, dignity and the defense of their sovereignty,
25:20discovering not only the Australian national unity and the leadership of Ayatollah Sayyid Mokhtava Khamenei,
25:26but also asserts the country's right to short its own destiny, free from imperialist interference.
25:40And in France, the streets of Paris became the stage for a demonstration in support of Lebanon and Palestine
25:46and against the escalation of Israel's aggressions and the backing of the United States.
25:51Thousands of protesters gathered in the French capital to reject military incursions in the Middle East.
25:57The protests voiced harsh criticism against the administration of President Emmanuel Macron,
26:03accusing his cabinet of displaying institutional weakness in the face of crimes committed by the government of Israel's Prime Minister
26:11Benjamin Netanyahu.
26:12The mobilization takes place amid a climate of diplomatic volatility,
26:17following the announcement by the President of the United States of a trilateral ceasefire agreement in Lebanon,
26:23while the Israeli regime continues escalating its attacks.
26:33From a public opinion standpoint, there is still a tipping point,
26:36and we must absolutely continue to sustain this mobilization and also make a clear break with the current government.
26:44And that break has already been made.
26:46There is a total disconnect between European leaders and us.
26:50Another path must be allowed to exist, and it must prevail.
26:54The policy of the French government is incomprehensible as well as insignificant.
26:59It has been said again and again.
27:02The sanctions, the so-called sanctions, the supposed distancing from Israel are entirely meaningless.
27:08Above all, they do nothing to prevent the situation or stop what's happening,
27:13the massacres in Lebanon and the massacres in Palestine.
27:21It's becoming unbearable because this is happening in Lebanon.
27:25These are our families, our compatriots.
27:28We saw it in Gaza as well, with thousands of children being killed.
27:33What hurts the most is not the act itself, but the international reaction,
27:37the reaction of the entire world.
27:40That's what hurts the most.
27:42There have always been crimes in the world,
27:45but this is the first time we have accepted the crime in this way.
27:49Remind and silent in the face of it.
27:51That's what is most painful.
27:55And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
27:58For TALOSURING English, I am Lorena Fong.
