00:56Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:00We begin with the news.
01:18With 54.5% of votes, Rodrigo Paz has been elected the new president of Bolivia, Jorge Tuto Quiroga,
01:28in the second round of general elections.
01:30This is almost a breaking news.
01:32A few moments ago we released, the results were announced by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal
01:37of the nation after 97% of votes were counted in a runoff election that saw a turnout of
01:46over 7 million voters.
01:49From the Democratic-Christian party passed son of former head of state Jaime Pazamora and
01:56who served as mayor of Tarija won with more than 3 million 350 votes while Tuto Quiroga from
02:04the Freedom and Democracy Party obtained 2 million 789.
02:11The results officially launched a new era of struggle for the indigenous communities of
02:15the country as it ends 20 years of social advances promoted by the left.
02:28Now that he has been elected president of Bolivia, let's learn a little more about Rodrigo Paz.
02:33Let's take a look.
02:34Rodrigo Paz Pereira, son of former president Jaime Paz Zamora, whose term was consolidated
02:40with the support of dictator Hugo Banzer, began his political career in 2002.
02:46His subsequent municipal administration was marked by allegations of corruption and controversial
02:53public works.
02:55He was a clear promoter of the destabilization that led to the coup against Emo Morales and
03:00supported the regime of Janine Agnes responsible for the Senkata and Sakaba massacres.
03:07His government proposal, the 50-50 agenda, is criticized for being a mechanism to suffocate
03:14the central government financially and weaken its ability to implement unitary social policies.
03:21In essence, his project seeks to revive the neoliberal policies that deepen inequality and
03:27surrender national sovereignty to foreign capital in the past.
03:34In a ceremony led by Pope Leo XIV at the St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, most of the
03:54Carmen Rendiles and Dr. José Gregorio Hernández were canonized, becoming the first Venezuelan
04:02blessed to ascend the sainthood.
04:05Thousands of faithful and official delegations celebrated the canonization of seven new saints
04:11of the Catholic Church.
04:12In this scenario, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the importance of these figures as living testimonies
04:17of faith, charity and commitment to the most vulnerable.
04:22The canonization of Mother Carmen Rendiles and Dr. José Gregorio Hernández has been the
04:26most anticipated event for the Venezuelan Catholic Church in decades.
04:32In honor of the Most Holy Trinity, for the exaltation of the Catholic faith and the growth
04:46of Christian life, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, the holy apostles Peter, and
04:52Paul, and ours, after having reflected at length, often invoking divine aid, and hearing the
05:05opinions of numerous brothers in the episcopate, we declare and define as saints the blessed martyrs,
05:11Ignatius Malodin, Pedro Torroth, Pinches Maria Poloni, Maria Carmen Rendiles Martinez, Maria Troncati,
05:26José Gregorio Hernández, Cisneros, and Bartolo Longo.
05:37And we inscribe them in the catalog of saints, and we establish that, throughout the Church,
05:42they be devoutly honored among the saints, in the name of the Father, of the Son, and
05:47of the Holy Spirit.
05:50Cardinal Marcelo Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, honored the
05:56life of Saint José Gregorio Hernández, praising his legacy as a symbol of faith and solidarity.
06:04José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, blessed José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, was born in
06:13Venezuela in 1864, studied medicine at the University of Caracas, and was sent by the Venezuelan authorities
06:23to further his studies in Paris, with the aim of establishing in his native country, a number of professorships
06:32of which he became the holder. A public medicine practitioner, he conducted specific studies, and received numerous awards.
06:42However, above all, he became famous as the doctor of the poor, because he treated those who had nothing to pay him for free.
06:51In fact, he even bought their medicines for them. Through this form of charity, he fulfilled his aspiration to consecrated life,
07:01which was denied him due to his fragile health. He died in a traffic accident while transporting medication to a sick child on June 29, 1919. He was identified by Pope Francis in 2021.
07:20The people of Venezuela celebrates with great joy and devotion the canonization of Venezuelans José Gregorio Hernández and also Carmen Rendiles, Mother Carmen Rendiles, the Venezuelan president.
07:31Nicolás Maduro attended the national vigil at the José Gregorio Hernández House Museum in Caracas. The event was marked by the faith and enthusiasm of thousands of faithful who waited for the canonization mass.
07:44In this regard, the head of state affirmed that Pope Francis fulfilled his promise of canonization for José Gregorio Hernández and now the Venezuelan people feel immense gratitude towards the Catholic Church.
07:57It is truly a very exciting day and a day of spiritual joy for all of Venezuela, for all Venezuelans and beyond our borders, because José Gregorio has always reached beyond our borders. He was always a saint here, we are in his home. I wanted to come to his home again.
08:24This is what we are inaugurating here as a museum, where he lived here in Caracas, and we have also seen people in his notice since yesterday afternoon, they have been keeping watch for more than 12 hours, and it is a day where the power of holiness of the people of Venezuela,
08:47has been recognized for the first time. There are two saints, a man and a woman, a great saint, Mother Carmen Rendellis, and the saint, the doctor of the poor, our doctor José Gregorio Hernández.
09:09It is a day of true joy and excitement. We have seen the entire ceremony, the liturgy, Pope Leo's message, and the large delegation of Venezuelans who were there, the beautiful tricolor flag with the eight stars, and the radiant horse galloping toward peace.
09:35And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and much more. We'll be right back, stay with us.

10:14Colombia condemns Donald Trump's accusations against President Gustavo Petro and denounces Washington's double standards in the fight against drug trafficking.
10:23The Minister of Defense assured that the statements of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, are a disrespect against national sovereignty.
10:30In addition, he reaffirmed that Colombian authorities are carrying out an intensive deployment to neutralize drug production and armed crime in the country.
10:41Meanwhile, the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, responded to the testimonies of the United States and pointed out that the boat that was attacked in the Caribbean had no connections with armed groups.
10:52In this context, Colombia's Defense Minister Pedro Arnulfo Sanchez described U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks about Colombian President Gustavo Petro as disrespectful.
11:09Any statement made against the President of the Republic, using such terms, is an affront to Colombia.
11:21He is the President of all Colombians, democratically elected, and as Minister of Defense, I can fully attest to his commitment to neutralizing drug trafficking.
11:33If there is one country that has used all its resources and sacrificed men and women in this fight and has stepped up this offensive in recent years, it is Colombia.
11:44I reaffirm that Colombia is a nation with absolute conviction and commitment to eradicating drug trafficking.
11:53In other news, in Brazil, at least 17 people died and several were injured after a tourist bus accident on the highway between Paranatama and Saloa in the state of Pernambuco.

12:34the relevant analysis of the braking system and other components of the vehicle are being carried out.
12:41The authorities are also investigating possible discrepancies in the passenger list, and whether there was mechanical failure or human error in driving.
