00:00I really hope that anyone who watches the film kind of understands what I felt
00:05because I think that the film is as good a description of like the physical response that I had.
00:12I was just completely blown apart by it.
00:17It was so beautiful, it was so visceral, it was so devastating.
00:25It was the first book that really made me physically respond and so when it came to making the next
00:33movie
00:34I just thought now is the time to make something that really makes us all feel.
00:38You started with Jacob, right?
00:41Well, Jacob and Margot both came up pretty quickly actually
00:44but I think when I worked with Jacob in Saltburn I was already sort of thinking about Wuthering Heights
00:51and, you know, the part that he plays in Saltburn is such a horrible person on paper
00:58so that was always the kind of game of that character was that he's, you know, he's spoiled and he's
01:04entitled
01:05and he's cruel and he's lots of very bad things
01:10and the game was always to make everyone love him
01:15and that's what Jacob did and it was such a difficult thing to do
01:18and because Heathcliff is such a complicated character, he's such an anti-hero
01:23it needed somebody who could bring that kind of tenderness and a sensitivity
01:28that would make the audience kind of understand
01:31even when he's at his worst
01:34that there's still something kind of deeply lovable about him.
01:38Yeah, they're not easy to fall in love with, right? Both of them.
01:42I think all of the best characters aren't easy to fall in love with
01:45you know, so much about, so many of the things that I enjoy are about
01:50kind of the application of pressure and the pushing of, you know, my own boundaries
01:55about what I think is acceptable and not
01:57and I think that's why Wuthering Heights is such a sort of timeless story
02:01because even now the characters are difficult to love
02:06but that's what makes it such an amazingly deeply felt story.
