00:00Your film came out from a book by Andy Weir. What do you like in the character of Ryland, the
00:08character played by Ryan Gosling?
00:12What's great about him, you know, he's really smart about one thing and that's, you know, microbiology and he's not
00:20good at being an astronaut or anything else.
00:23And that was really important to Ryan. It was important to us to have it be like, oh, I can
00:28see myself. If I woke up in space, this is how I would be. I would be terrified to go
00:33on a spacewalk.
00:34I wouldn't know what I was doing and I would have all these insecurities. And I think that having him
00:39be a normal person from a normal background makes us, the audience, be able to relate to him more.
00:46And understand what we're capable of.
00:48And then I think having him be a teacher is like a use, it ends up being a really useful
00:54skill and having to learn how to communicate with someone who's super different from you, breaks complicated things down into
01:01their simplest forms so that you guys can find common ground with each other.
01:06Ryland makes all of these things because he's brave.
01:10Right. Bravery doesn't mean you're not afraid to do something. It means you're overcoming that fear and you're afraid and
01:16you do it anyway.
01:17Yeah. And I think that makes the movie really universal that, you know, we're all scared of things. But as
01:23Ryan says, you know, the future is not to be feared. It is to be figured out. All that is,
01:28is a precursor to action.
