00:00One of the main reasons why I think that you should have the patience with me is because
00:05India is right on top of every table with consumers engaging with AI.
00:12As a population, we are one of the largest, and also the Indian population
00:18trusts AI-generated information more than anywhere else in the world.
00:23So we really are sort of one of the biggest consumers of AI.
00:26We could also be the ones that drive AI application on top of the models that have
00:33been built out by big tech right now.
00:36As a media company in India, we are doing a lot of experimentation with AI ourselves.
00:41So going towards the lazy journalists and the lazy anchors, we have tried to clone our very
00:50own anchors with their permission and use them in prime time, and it's gone very well.
00:55Even their family was asking the anchor, you told me you are on holiday, but I see
01:00you on prime time on TV.
01:02Even though we had put AI anchor there.
01:05So it was an interesting experiment.
01:07But like you said, not everyone could catch that there was something missing.
01:14Some people caught it, that the emotion wasn't there or the life was not in it.
01:18But, you know, it passed as an experiment quite well.
01:23The other one we tried as an opposite to the lazy journalist is to create an entire subsection
01:31called handmade by editors and reporters, and also something called eyewitness.
01:38Like a separate section where reporters and journalists now are pushed forward to creating
01:46ground reports or eyewitness accounts and just focusing on what they saw, what they heard,
01:52rather than a more sort of vanilla report.
01:55So it's very much the human experience of being in that situation, whether it's a big political
02:02meeting or a natural calamity or even war.
02:05They are things that viewers are wanting, and more and more of that is served to them.
02:11And I feel that this really goes against moderation and calibration that a newsroom brings to journalism
02:19and to the information that is given out to the audience.
02:23I sort of call it the French fries and salad formula, right?
02:28Like if you ask a child, he will always ask for French fries, but you can't always give him French
02:34fries.
02:34You have to mix the salad in between.
02:36And newsrooms do that.
02:39Algorithms do not do that because they are not based on values of calibration and moderation.
02:44They are based on values of profit and engagement.
02:48The other piece that you said, how to use AI responsibly.
02:52I think one of the things we use in our newsroom is something called the AI sandwich,
02:57which is that you start with a human.
02:59You have AI in between to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and even maybe attractiveness
03:04in language that young children would like and make it more sparkly, like the gentleman from Rambler said.
03:12But then it again ends with a human touch or a human print so that the final approval remains with
03:19human beings.
