Transcript
00:00Keeping tabs on the real estate market.
00:02Getting you down?
00:03There's got to be a better way.
00:05I'm Jack McBrayer, and we bring you
00:07eye-catching, unique homes on the real estate market
00:10that satisfy a hunger for color.
00:13Yay!
00:14Texture.
00:15Oh!
00:16And outrageous surprises.
00:18That's a rock.
00:19It's an active cave system.
00:21Whoa.
00:21The old owner would wake up in the morning
00:23and pee on the store.
00:24He would pee on it.
00:26One house will be crowned the wildest.
00:30So join now.
00:37Welcome to Las Vegas, Nevada, known worldwide
00:40for the glitzy Las Vegas Strip.
00:43The high rollers come to spin large, let loose,
00:46and stir up some fun.
00:47There's also one house for sale here that's
00:50got one heck of a good poker face.
00:55Oh, I was told we're seeing a place that's 16,000 square feet.
00:59So.
01:05Hello, Jack.
01:06How are you doing today?
01:07Frankie, right?
01:08Yes, it is.
01:09Oh, no.
01:09It's so nice to meet you.
01:10So nice to meet you, too.
01:12I'm Frankie, and I am the property manager and docent
01:14for one of the most unique homes in Las Vegas.
01:18This property is currently owned by a non-profit foundation
01:20out of Florida.
01:21The reason they're selling it at this time
01:23is because it doesn't fit their business model,
01:26and they have other investments that they
01:27want to reallocate those funds to.
01:29I can't help but notice a gentleman lurking.
01:33He is security for the property, and he makes sure if we have
01:37invited guests, you can get in the gate, and that you're safe
01:40and I'm safe.
01:41Safe.
01:41Everybody's happy here.
01:42You'll notice that frequently we have people
01:45in the neighborhood looking at the house because they're so
01:48curious about this property.
01:49It has a reputation?
01:51Oh, it definitely has a reputation.
01:53But I'm a little confused.
01:54It looks fairly innocuous, with all due respect.
01:57Well, it blends in with the neighborhood.
01:59It's an acre lot, which is unusual for this neighborhood.
02:02The other houses are all 1970s, 1980s style.
02:07I see.
02:07As this one is as well.
02:09OK.
02:09Well, I am very curious how this house is attracting
02:12so many looky-loos.
02:13Let me show you around.
02:14Perfect.
02:15I can't wait to see why you need security.
02:19Let's go upstairs.
02:21Open this door, please.
02:24Oh, Wildness, where are you?
02:32This is nice.
02:33But Frankie, with all due respect, this is like a kind
02:36of normal house.
02:37Yeah, well, it's a pretty typical house.
02:40This second floor is its own self-contained apartment.
02:43So it's got the full bathroom and a kitchen
02:45and the little dining room.
02:47It even has a full bedroom.
02:49Now, Frankie, it's Zillow gone wild.
02:52Why am I here?
02:54All right.
02:55Let me take you somewhere else.
02:57I'll show you a little bit more.
02:58Now we're talking.
02:59Where am I going?
02:59This way?
03:00Yes, come on down.
03:01OK, back to where we started.
03:04Well, hello.
03:05Hello, I'm Natalie.
03:07Hi, Natalie, I'm Jack.
03:08Hi, nice to meet you.
03:09So this is Natalie.
03:10She's my assistant at the property here.
03:13But she also has a secret code to the elevator
03:16that you're going to go down.
03:17Yeah, here we go.
03:18So she's going to type in the secret code for us.
03:21Wait, go down?
03:22Yes.
03:24Here you go.
03:25Told you it's special.
03:26What is this place?
03:36Oh, not quite what you anticipated, huh?
03:39Oh, my gosh.
03:45What?
03:53What in the world is this?
03:58This is the Las Vegas underground mansion,
04:01otherwise known as the underground house.
04:02This is the fourth Atomitat ever built.
04:06It's an atomic habitat designed for a single family
04:09to live underground long term and make it through a bomb.
04:13OK, so what year are we talking about?
04:15The year this was built was actually 1974.
04:18Who did this and why?
04:20The people that built this and lived down here
04:23were Jerry Henderson and his second wife, Mary.
04:28And Jerry was a ultra-entrepreneur that
04:32traveled all over the world.
04:34Jerry and Mary built the underground home from 1974 to 1978.
04:38It was approximately $10 million just for the underground space.
04:43And he already owned the land.
04:44We're below ground.
04:45Yes.
04:46We're 26 feet below ground.
04:48Oh.
04:49When you look around, you see shingles and actual real brick.
04:52So it's built as a house in the middle of the space.
04:56It's a house and a house.
04:57Yeah.
04:57This is the most unexpected of perhaps all
05:01of the houses I've seen on Zillow Gone Wild.
05:05There's a yard.
05:06There are trees down here.
05:09There's an entire house with a front door and even a roof.
05:12It looks like I'm on a movie set.
05:14And I hear birds.
05:16Are there?
05:16They're not real birds.
05:17There's no real birds down here,
05:18so I don't have to chase them down and clean up after them.
05:21But yes, we do have the nice sound effects of real birds
05:24so that the outdoors feels more like outdoors.
05:27Oh my god.
05:27This is like a theme park.
05:29Well, let's go in inside.
05:30I want to.
05:35Oh, this is a, this is a mansion.
05:44This is a mansion.
05:52This is a giant living room.
05:56Is that a real bar?
05:58You've got a pool table.
06:00I'm inside a house within a house.
06:03But it feels like a real house.
06:06Part of the purpose of the automatat design
06:08is that wherever you are in the house,
06:11there's doors and windows and you can see outside.
06:14I love it.
06:14The ceilings are very tall.
06:16There are windows with scenery.
06:19This is so well thought out.
06:21And also, the weather's always perfect.
06:23Ooh, they should get a rain machine.
06:25So let me take you to the kitchen next.
06:27Go ahead and go through the double doors.
06:29All right.
06:31Oh.
06:34Is this a functioning kitchen?
06:36Yes.
06:36They made things very well in the 1970s.
06:39The stove still works.
06:41The oven hood still works.
06:42The double oven still works.
06:44Was it designed like this?
06:46Yes.
06:47Mary loved pink.
06:48And you can see that the floors are pink and all the trim.
06:51There's been a little bit of touch up,
06:52but it's all original.
06:53And there's plenty of room for food storage
06:55that could last up to five years.
06:57Being in that kitchen feels kind of like a movie set.
07:00It's very pristine, very pink.
07:02It's a very stylized kitchen.
07:04Here's one of the built-in toasters.
07:05There's another one against the wall over there.
07:07How much toast you making?
07:09I know.
07:10There's only two people living here,
07:11and they could have eight pieces at once.
07:13They must have loved toast.
07:14What is this?
07:15This is a built-in can opener.
07:16Oh, my gosh.
07:18And then we have the built-in trash compactor.
07:20These look like toys.
07:21And clearly, we are vented well, yes?
07:24There's ventilation?
07:25Oh, yeah.
07:26The ventilation system is for cooking.
07:28There's a giant state-of-the-art air handler
07:30that can replace all of the oxygen in the underground
07:33in a matter of hours.
07:34There's nine air conditioners.
07:35And the wood-burning fireplace does have a chimney.
07:38There's a tree at the ground level that looks dead,
07:40but it's actually the chimney.
07:42So let me take you on back to the backyard.
07:46The backyard.
07:48Oh, my gosh.
07:49This is bonkers.
07:52How do you like this mural?
07:54It's beautiful.
07:55Each mural is a different property that Jerry owned.
07:58And each mural extends from one corner of the underground
08:02all the way to another.
08:03It's just fantastic.
08:06This is Suffern, New York, where Jerry was raised.
08:09The design, the decor, these murals represent almost every place
08:13that Jerry has ever lived.
08:15So he's just surrounding himself in comfort and nostalgia
08:18and good memories.
08:20I think that's very smart.
08:21Standards were different back then in terms of, like, construction
08:24and painting and all of that.
08:26So this place is up to code, I think?
08:28Yes.
08:29Even though it was the 1970s, this is built with 18 inches of concrete
08:33and one foot by one foot steel beams, which you can see around the house.
08:38And the trees are actually one foot by one foot steel columns
08:42that are part of the support structure for the underground.
08:45I mean, it's essentially a bunker.
08:47But you almost forget you're 26 feet underground,
08:50because he made it the most inviting bunker I've ever been in.
08:55Oh, and I've seen some bunkers.
08:59Let me change the scenery from day to night to sunrise to sunset.
09:03Hang out and watch the ranch for a minute.
09:05Do you mind if I do?
09:07All right, Jack, I'm going to make it nighttime for you.
09:10All right.
09:11Oh, my pearls.
09:12Yeah, so look behind you at the mural.
09:15Oh, my gosh.
09:16Look at the moon.
09:18Oh, this is cool.
09:21Then we have dusk.
09:24We have a pretty little sunset.
09:28OK, back to daytime.
09:33Within this sealed compartment, you can explore the journey of an entire day.
09:39It's very pleasant, but it's like a sensory deprivation tank of time.
09:44I mean, Mary and Jerry had a vision.
09:47Speaking of Mary and Jerry, let's go check out their bedrooms.
09:51OK, this way?
09:52Yes, sir.
09:53So come on down to Jerry's bedroom.
09:54Turn right here.
09:55In here?
09:55Yeah.
09:56All right.
09:57OK.
10:00This is nice.
10:02Yeah, it's pretty comfortable, right?
10:04Oh, my gosh.
10:07Come on out to the patio.
10:12Oh, there's a running fountain outside his bedroom door?
10:16Jerry likes having a very serene environment so that he could focus and rest well, because
10:20he was such a workaholic.
10:22This is amazing.
10:24So let's go check out Mary's bedroom.
10:26Oh, OK.
10:28Oh.
10:36All the curtains are original.
10:37All the floors are original.
10:39The wall coverings are original silk imported from Asia.
10:43Oh, my gosh.
10:44Mary and Jerry had separate bedrooms, as was pretty common back in those days.
10:48It was?
10:49Oh, yeah.
10:49He liked it super dark, really, really quiet.
10:52So if Mary was busy or had kids visiting or whatever, Jerry would have had his own privacy
10:58so they could both sleep well.
10:59So down this hallway, there is a big walk-in closet and a bathroom of Mary's.
11:05I mean, I would hope whoever gets this place kind of, like, keeps it.
11:09Like, this is like a time capsule.
11:12It really is.
11:13And I hope that they will preserve it and help us keep the legacy of Jerry and Mary going on.
11:18There are occasions when people come down and they say, oh, I would rip this out.
11:22I'd paint over the walls.
11:23I would change this.
11:24I would change that.
11:25And I'd grit my teeth and say, uh-oh.
11:27I hope that whoever buys it would appreciate the history and the special artistic aspects of the house.
11:34So just like Jerry had a really nice view off of his bedroom, Mary had a very nice view off
11:39of her bedroom.
11:40Oh.
11:40So let's go see what she would see when she woke up in the morning.
11:48Mary had a very nice view off of her bedroom.
11:52Before we continue exploring best-kept secrets, we invited you to show off your spaces.
11:58And let me tell you, some of you out there are pretty wild.
12:02Roll it.
12:04I'm Johnny.
12:05I'm from Danbury, Connecticut, and this is the show Pony Palace.
12:10I decorate in really fun, wacky, and tacky ways.
12:13The gaudier, the more glam, the better, honey.
12:17My inspiration comes from everywhere.
12:19I'm not afraid of a thrift store.
12:21I'm not afraid of a dumpster.
12:22My whole kitchen is bakery-themed, and I thought, huh, that door frame is ruining my life and destroying my
12:29family.
12:29It's so ugly and boring.
12:31And I should just use lightweight spackle to make it look like icing from a cake because I am that
12:38extra and that cutesy and sweet.
12:41My staircase is lined with faux fur.
12:44When my mom comes over, she says, I feel like I'm in the inside of a coffin.
12:47This is very claustrophobic.
12:48And I'm like, girl, keep it moving.
12:50But actually, it's a lot to maintain.
12:52I have to vacuum her.
12:53I have to condition her.
12:54I have to brush out her knots.
12:56It's crazy.
12:58When you come up the stairs, you are looking at all different doors that look like separate houses.
13:04One door is an ice cream shop.
13:05That is the bathroom.
13:07Then you have the fruit room, where I do a lot of my crafts.
13:10And then you have the bedroom, which is Miss Piggy-themed slash under-the-sea-themed.
13:16It doesn't make sense, but it totally makes sense.
13:18When people come into my house, they are gooped, gag, wigglers, bald, honey.
13:22Their wig is up in a tree because the house is that iconic and colorful.
13:26People are like, what about the resale value?
13:28Honey, I'm not decorating for the next owner, okay?
13:31I'm probably going to live here forever.
13:32At this point, I kind of have to.
13:36Now, where was I?
13:38Oh, yeah.
13:39It's a pool.
13:44That is a real swimming pool with two spas up above.
13:48So the top spa is a hot spa.
13:50The one below it is a cold plunge spa.
13:54We have a four-hole putting course as well, because you cannot be bored if you're living underground for many
13:59years.
14:00Oh, my gosh.
14:02I have a challenge for you.
14:05Okay.
14:06See if you can hit it from here.
14:08Shh, quiet on the tee.
14:11Oh, Jack McBrayer misses.
14:15We'll get him next time.
14:18Now, check this out.
14:20This Fred Flintstone rock serves a purpose.
14:25You've got to have an actual barbecue next to your pool in your underground mansion.
14:30You know that none of these words go together.
14:33So it's still functioning, full barbecue.
14:37This is the only tree in the underground that is not a support structure.
14:41Really?
14:41This is the exhaust for the electric barbecue.
14:44It sucks the smoke up through the tree and into the exhaust system for the chimney for the wood-burning
14:50fireplace.
14:51This place is unreal.
14:54I could stay here, and I don't love all houses.
14:58Well, you know what?
14:59The only way you would know how it would be to live here full-time is to spend the night.
15:05Are you being serious or doing a bit?
15:07I'm serious.
15:08What?
15:12Spend the night.
15:13Seriously?
15:14Enjoy.
15:15Take care.
15:17Let's see what happens now.
15:22Lonely.
15:24That was my pain.
15:27Being invited to spend the evening in a place like this.
15:30Of course I'm going to say yes.
15:34I mean, the kitchen looks like something you'd see in, like, leave it to be there.
15:37Is this how you cook eggs?
15:39This is a full house, full yard, so many activities.
15:43Ooh.
15:46Ooh.
15:49Ooh.
15:49Ooh.
15:55Oh, man.
15:56I can't believe this is a real place.
15:58This was fun.
16:00However, I have been down here for either 45 minutes or three and a half days.
16:07I literally don't know.
16:18I don't remember buying this outfit.
16:26I'm okay with it, though.
16:28Zillow Gone Wild is filmed in front of a live studio audience.
16:35Morning.
16:38You're just in time.
16:41For?
16:42For breakfast.
16:45Milk delivery.
16:57Gee, this is the best weather I've ever seen.
17:13What time is it?
17:17Oof.
17:19Oh, Frankie.
17:20Good morning.
17:21I guess.
17:22How was your sleep?
17:23I am not even sure I went to sleep.
17:26This house was designed to help you feel like time stands still.
17:31Shall we go back up?
17:38Frankie, thank you so much.
17:40I hope this place sells lickety-split with a perfect historic buyer
17:45to maintain this very special place.
17:48Thank you so much, Frankie.
17:49These days, they've traveled.
17:50Yes, ma'am.
17:55There's a private showing at Best Kept Secret.
17:58Let's see if we can dig up some potential buyers.
18:02Welcome to the front of the underground house.
18:05Oh.
18:06All right.
18:06Where do you want to stop?
18:08Wow.
18:09So this is like the front yard.
18:11It is exactly like the front yard.
18:12Oh, my gosh.
18:12So the whole grounds is about 16,000 square feet.
18:16Today, we hosted a broker's open that target agents on behalf of their clients for them
18:20to come and experience the property and then call their clients and do a private tour.
18:24You got a poker table.
18:25You got a poker table.
18:26You got bars everywhere.
18:27Pool table.
18:27Built-in bar.
18:28Pool table.
18:28I mean, how cool are these seats?
18:30It's priced so high, it has to be only priced in a way that would make sense as a commercial
18:36business.
18:37I think it could also go to a private person who just wants a fun playground.
18:40Thankfully, we've had such an incredible PR team that has had this house exposed to the New York Times.
18:46I think the international exposure is what's going to attract a buyer in a non-traditional way to see this
18:51property and see the value and want to have it.
18:53How do we get inspections on this house?
18:55You would get an inspector like you would any normal house above ground.
18:58You'd have a general inspector, pool inspector.
19:01Do you have cell phone service down here?
19:03You do.
19:03It's stronger in certain areas.
19:05Okay.
19:05It just matters.
19:06Some areas have more 5G connectivity.
19:08Some areas don't.
19:10The underground pool, is the same kind of maintenance?
19:12Or is there chlorine?
19:13Or is there salt?
19:13There's not as much need of chlorine because there's no direct sun here.
19:16And this is still all original tile that's not been replaced because it's not exposed to any of the elements.
19:23These agents are going to have quite a lot to tell their clients about this subterranean beauty.
19:28And while Best Kept Secret is still on the market, a sale is hopefully on the horizon, waiting for the
19:34right buyer to unearth it.
19:37And now comes my favorite part, but with a twist.
19:42Hello, Frankie.
19:44How are ya?
19:45Hello, Jack.
19:46Your house was one doozy of a home that had no competition but itself.
19:51It sent the wild dial off the rails.
19:55So we're recognizing one element that stands out as the most unique.
20:01Wonderful.
20:02Is it all the cleverly disguised trickery, like the rock that's really a grill?
20:07Or fake trees that are really structural supports?
20:10And chimneys?
20:11How about the water features, like the fountain, the spa, and the in-ground pool that's underground?
20:18Or could it be the front and backyard that gaslights your brain into thinking you're outside when you're actually inside?
20:28And the winning element is...
20:33The water features!
20:35Now, I know you've received a little surprise from us, so why don't you go ahead and open it up?
20:42Look!
20:44Jack, you're such a trickster.
20:46So what do you think?
20:47Oh, I love it.
20:48It's fabulous.
20:49Having a secret, splash-worthy oasis is something you never expect to see beneath the surface.
20:55You can soak your toes or swim some laps, all while the rest of the world has no idea you're
21:0126 feet below them.
21:02This is our first trophy ever.
21:04So greatly appreciated.
21:06It will be on display down here indefinitely.
21:09I love it.
21:10But there's still so much more while to come.
21:14These are real-life copper pennies.
21:17Guess how many we have in the floor?
21:195,000.
21:20You're close.
21:21Are you?
21:22350,000.
