Transcript
00:02We're in the Outback, Dad.
00:03Pick your boomerang.
00:05I'll have that one.
00:07All right.
00:07What have I got to do?
00:08See if you can lick the cans.
00:09These corks keep it with me in the eye. I can't see anything now.
00:12Right, you ready?
00:12Yeah.
00:21You're getting that.
00:24Go on.
00:24Yeah.
00:28How do you do that?
00:30Right.
00:30You ready? This will be right in your hand.
00:32Go on.
00:33Boom!
00:34Here she comes, baby.
00:43Brad and Barney are on an Aussie adventure.
00:46Wow!
00:47Having started in Sydney, they've travelled past the sun-soaked beaches of the Gold Coast
00:51and are now continuing north before diving headfirst into the Queensland Outback.
00:55And finally ending in Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.
01:00As ever, Barney's chasing thrills.
01:02And Brad...
01:06Well, he's just questioning the life choices that led him here.
01:09Guys, I really don't want to do this.
01:10What a change.
01:12What a change.
01:13What a change.
01:14What a change.
01:33If they are on the south north, taking them deep into Queensland's cattle country, they are merely scratching the surface
01:38of this vast expanse of land.
01:40The Outback covers approximately 5.3 million square kilometres. 22 times the size of the United Kingdom, 60% of
01:53the United States.
01:56that's mad do you reckon we'd survive if we broke down and we got lost absolutely not we've got
02:00enough water to last a while and we've got three bags of jelly snakes in the fridge yeah that'll
02:05keep us going oh my god that's for us what the helicopter that chopper is for us oh my god
02:20what's he doing just follow it it's gonna take us to a branch we're gonna help some farmers today put
02:25your foot down funnel that chopper thanks to their aerial escort Brad and Barney have found their way
02:35to this remote branch that's home to over 2,000 free-roaming cattle we're gonna muster some
02:41cattle this morning what oh my god look they all look like proper cowboys and as if by magic now
02:47you both do too just hey guys I'm Barney this is my dad Brad I'm Calvin hi Calvin nice to
02:58me Brad
02:58good to see you Kelvin love to see you mate Frank nice to see you Frank is this your farm
03:02then yeah
03:03this is our farm yeah this is about 13,000 acres and the one next door is 12,000 acres
03:06so we've got
03:0625,000 acres side by side that's a lot of land yeah it's almost that they do I suppose you'll
03:12soon see
03:12yeah right Frank that was you in the chopper flying over us yeah right yep wow why do you need
03:16helicopters to muster cattle oh I just saw the vast size of the paddocks I think the biggest paddock I
03:21went into last year with three machines was 800 square k's you still use horses as well sometimes
03:26yeah for the benefit of the animal especially breeders cows calves just a bit steadier so rounding up
03:32cattle today yeah okay let's do it yeah we're driving these buggies yeah the team are moving into
03:40position to start rounding up about 200 of their cattle so they can be weaned and receive a health
03:46check which is a top priority for the farmers while Kelvin takes care of Brad in one buggy Barney
03:52is joined by his brother-in-law Darren how often do you have to do this then two three three
03:57times a
03:58year and the rest of the time you just let them go do what they want yeah on the land
04:02so how long
04:03has it been since your family used just horses yeah yeah really yeah well so as recent as that yeah
04:10yeah good luck dad let's go come up on this vast 25,000 acre ranch is roughly the size of
04:18Cardiff so
04:19Frank's bird's-eye view is vital enabling him to direct our wannabe cowboys towards the cattle
04:25they sort of got the jump on us here Frank if you can spin them around or something mate I
04:29don't
04:29know yeah let's not worry the boys are working together Brad in front keeping them in line and
04:35Barney behind to shepherd any stragglers back into the herd he don't want to know he could be a bit
04:39hostile that old bull he might come in and renovate a buggy hello he's got his eye on us here
04:44he comes
04:45that's the bull get ready barnes to head out hey Darren just get Barney from straight across this way
04:52this is the trickiest part guiding the bull in the right direction without getting so close that he
04:57might charge we're gonna try to ran into one of these cats the smoke is used as a bit of
05:10extra
05:10encouragement to get the cattle moving it also works on young Walsh's this guy right out of the
05:20fences something cattle coming back wherever the cows go the buggies must follow no matter the terrain
05:26oh sorry Darren I suppose I'll just keep going with it mate they're on the point there
05:34we're okay just drive through everything yeah hey hey
05:41the dust is torture
05:45all right yeah great this is mad isn't it I absolutely love it now the herd is rounded up
05:52they just need to get them into the pen right over there and pull up we're gonna go for that
05:57gate
05:57down there now and shut them in there go
06:10yeah that was awesome wasn't it great
06:15well done lads that was great that was thanks Kelvin that was brilliant hey Kelvin that was awesome
06:21thank you cheers mate no worries that was brilliant good work gents a job very well done
06:27hey well played well played well played you I thoroughly enjoyed I think we did well no I really
06:32did I really liked it well I was talking to Darren he was saying these are basically wild cattle it's
06:37not like a farm near Epping yeah like a dairy it's like there's it's just basically they've got so
06:43much land and it's just let the cows do whatever they want and then three times a year try and
06:46round
06:47them up and three times a year yeah you know that's like free range to the extreme not off
06:52good day's work that yeah well done you up for going into town oh mate yeah should we have a
06:56beer
06:56yeah after a quick freshen up to remove the dust and cow smells I hope they're cow smells the lads
07:06head to a local outback bar for a well-earned drink sovereign tavern bring it on I think it's a
07:16chance to get to know the locals and soak up some of their culture which is yes let's quiz night
07:22which seems to be beers and a pump quiz oh how will Brad coat keep it under your hair yeah
07:28I host the
07:30choice the what never heard of it okay everyone who's ready for trivia okay the first round general
07:40knowledge okay we're in we're in which planets been so slowly that a single day there is longer
07:46than a year I'm out which came first Domino's or Pizza Hut I'll be talking about the game Domino's
07:54or the pizza chain the pizza chain okay now we're in trouble who is the host of UK's The Chase
08:06talk about a pointless question
08:11at last one I know
08:22what's that what's going on meat raffle a meat raffle yeah ah yes the famous Aussie meat raffle a
08:30tradition seen in bars across the country as a way to raise money for local causes
08:39yes defo yeah how much for a line of tickets might not take it $10 a strip should we do
08:44that
08:44let's do that no and I'll have 10 and all cheers try them on there thanks mate thank you lovely
08:49thank

09:31birthday today or yesterday happy birthday there you go happy birthday make it good and strong
09:45I really love this we shouldn't do dangerous stuff barnes throwing yourself off a dam dangling
09:51off a piece of string down a building all that malarkey this is what life's all about doing a
09:56quiz winning a raffle this is proper mate this is it wait till you see what we're doing tomorrow
09:59then oh jesus yes sleep well gents tomorrow dad's getting broken again
10:06all the pub with no beer
10:23brad and barney are on a brief detour back south to charter's towers a town steeped in history being
10:29once a key location in the 19th century gold rush oh look it's all they've all painted everything gold so
10:35this was the gold mine in town this was gold was discovered here in 1871 and people flocked here
10:43this was once Queensland's second largest city oh and if you look there's a lot of old-timey buildings
10:49this is my favorite town it's nice in it yeah this has got something about it quirky right so we're
10:55in
10:55charter's towers yes and I thought we'd do something quite unusual okay today yeah Australia's full of
11:01wacky sports let me read you out some wacky activities okay do that the nude olympics is
11:08that is that here in Australia yep where do they hang the medal the nude games began in the 1980s
11:16events include the sack race
11:22tug-of-war the three-legged race
11:36like father like son childish but please don't worry viewers they will not be doing any of these
11:44the quirky sport they are doing takes place on the outskirts of town
11:56oh it's like a little track yep we're going to be lawnmower racing today are we really we are
12:04originating at a pub in Victoria in 1988 lawnmower racing Aussie style has grown rapidly clubs like
12:11this one can be found throughout the country David Renee Renee hi Renee I'm Bonnie this is my dad Brad
12:17how are you hello there Brad great to see you Brad welcome to the North Queensland Māori racing club
12:22look at the speed of them is it like become a national sport so you have national championships and stuff
12:27like that we have an all Australian yeah yeah basically the whole of Australia and New Zealand
12:31come over as well how long does it take to cut your grass in these you won't have grass left
12:36yeah
12:38so we need to wear some gear gloves helmet might need an extra change of underwear after this
12:44though I am running out of underwear this has been a long old trip this is your seventh road trip
12:49Brad
12:49you should know by now to back more than three pairs of pants first up for a practice run it's
12:56Barney
13:00top-level racing mowers can reach speeds of up to 60 miles an hour which is pretty nippy for a
13:06gardening tool how often do they tip over not often we've only had one t-bone accident what's a t
13:14-bone
13:14like where you get hit on the side and you flip really yeah very good right you're up bradders
13:36what was that about taking corners
13:46how did you find out tell you what you couldn't keep that up for long that is that is exhausting
13:52are you
13:52ready to write who we gonna waste against me v you v the lads the lads being some of the
13:56better ones in
13:57Australia oh well then let's why not we'd be mad not to so four of the top moa races in
14:03the country
14:03plus these two Brad in the black helmet Barney in the red and away they go apart from Barney who's
14:15been overtaken by his dad on the start line but Brad's already in a spin oh god the determination to
14:29get back in the race is there on Brad's face I assume can either of them challenge for the lead
14:40not if you spin like that Barney
14:41come on
14:47Brad's feeling confident and he's back in front
14:52until the experts show him how it's done
14:56oh Barney's spun again to the back you go
15:06as Bradley finishes strongly Barney brings up the rear
15:13thank you thank you yeah yeah thank you so much everyone it's been a pleasure being here today
15:20thank you for having us you're what a community a fantastic community we've been blessed yeah by
15:25traveling through Australia and finding communities like yourself that are just wonderful and so
15:31welcoming god bless you thank you it's results time and with two of the locals taking first and
15:37second is there any chance for Brad to make the podium all right with the biggest Queensland upset
15:43you're probably here off taking home third place today Bradley Walsh in Queensland tradition when you
16:00come last in a race meet it's an honorary thing to take a shoeie and unfortunately today Barney it's
16:07all yours a shoeie what's a shoeie it's where you drink a beer out of a shoe obviously oh he
16:14spilled a
16:14bit Barnes thank you everyone thank you so much for having us it's been a great day now a song
16:27from my
16:27latest album no few that was a close one Brad is now back in a much more comfortable driving seat
16:39and he's taken them over 200 miles east away from the outback to the coastal resort town of
16:45Ailey Beach gateway to the picturesque Whitsunday Islands well by the coast again we're in Ailey Beach
16:51now you can't go swimming though what do you mean you can't go swimming across November to about May
16:56deadly jellyfish in the water it's a funny old country this way it's tell you you love Australia
17:01don't you I do I really like Australia apart from the fact you can't swim you can't walk around
17:06either because of the snakes and the spiders basically it's the most dangerous country in
17:11the world there's a certain type of tick here that if it bites you it makes you allergic to red
17:17meat for
17:17the rest of your life dad yeah it curses you the eastern paralysis tick what is it the Harry Potter
17:22of ticks beef extract so no eating right so that's another thing on the list the kangaroo isn't venomous
17:30no it can kick the living day long time yeah what we have to where we go what we doing
