Watch as a dominant male lion aggressively protects a lioness from nearby pride members during an intense wildlife encounter.

Tegan Panos captured the dramatic scene in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The video shows the powerful male lion staying close beside a lioness believed to be in oestrus while other lions cautiously approach nearby. As members of the pride move closer, the male becomes increasingly territorial, growling and mock charging to force them back.

The tense display of dominance appears aimed at securing mating rights and preventing interference from rival lions.

Throughout the encounter, the lion repeatedly focuses his aggression toward pride members attempting to approach the lioness.

The clip was shared on Facebook and Tegan Panos said: "A dominant male lion is displaying highly territorial and protective behaviour around a lioness believed to be in oestrus.

"The tension escalates as the male focuses his aggression toward pride members that come too close to the lioness, creating an intense display of dominance and control within the pride dynamic."
