00:00All right.
00:02Okay, I think I'll open kind of, how did we end up with Miles Garrett sitting
00:07between Sean and ourself?
00:08I think when Sean and I first met for the first time to talk about the offseason,
00:13we did discuss how we can add to the defense.
00:16That started with the trade with Trent McDuffie adding Jalen.
00:20I think when we get to, in Miles' case, and I'll keep this brief.
00:25When they made, when Cleveland made the adjustment to his contract,
00:28not sure if it was a signal, they made an adjustment.
00:31I've got a good relationship with Andrew.
00:34Barry thought I'd just check in, you know, let's check in.
00:36Obviously, Miles and his standing with him.
00:39He's a Cleveland Brown.
00:41He's on their Mount Rushmore, so they were a no.
00:45But Andrew and I have a good relationship.
00:47We like talking about football a good bit, so I would pester him a little bit,
00:51probably jokingly at first.
00:53Kept doing that.
00:54And then we began talking a little more seriously about it.
00:58We tried to do this with draft compensation.
01:01Then the draft came and went.
01:03We picked talks back up.
01:05We tried to discuss, you know, more draft compensation.
01:08At the end of the day, and where it got a little tough for us,
01:13is they asked for Jared Burse in return.
01:15And similar to what Cleveland did at first, we were a no,
01:18based on all that Jared's done for our organization.
01:21So during May, we kept trying.
01:24We tried to work things out, tried to figure out a solution.
01:27But as the June 1st date came to, let's call it, as it was getting closer,
01:33probably sometime late May there into that weekend, we kind of had a decision to make.
01:37We knew where Cleveland, Stan.
01:38They knew where we stood.
01:40And then we proceeded to make the trade.
01:43And with all of this, I can say, because I know Josh is here, Stan, I do think this.
01:48When you make a move like this, having the ecosystem that Stan,
01:52Josh's family provides for us, to be able to do something like this out of the box,
01:57a little bit as free agency, a kind of come and go.
02:01That's always a very positive thing.
02:03And at the end of the day, we were able to agree, and we're jacked here.
02:09So much for being brief, Les.
02:11You know?
02:12No, I'm just kidding.
02:13That's coming from me.
02:14That's not...
02:15Oh, yeah, we'll compare notes.
02:16Here's what I will say, though.
02:18It's a rare opportunity, and it is challenging,
02:20because when you look at being able to acquire a player like this,
02:24these things don't come up often.
02:26And so when you do have a chance, you're saying,
02:29hey, can we have the best of both, where you're able to get Miles
02:31and still keep a player that you love that's been an instrumental part
02:34of the last couple years.
02:35That was the hardest part of this decision,
02:37is parting ways with somebody that we love and care about.
02:40Wish him the best in Cleveland, and he's done an amazing job for us
02:44each of the last couple years.
02:45Brought an energy, a production level, a toughness.
02:48But the opportunity to be able to get a chance to be able to work alongside Miles,
02:52he knows the respect and reverence I've had for his game.
02:54I'm just getting to know him over the course of his career and my coaching career.
03:00And we feel like he can upgrade our football team.
03:02He's going to make a great impact.
03:04The important stuff for us was, number one, you have Bubba Ventron in the building
03:08and Kyle Hoke that can speak to what a great teammate he is
03:11and where you really see it on a daily basis.
03:13One of my favorite things I saw about this guy was he gets the sack record.
03:17It wasn't the fact that he got his 23rd sack.
03:19Watch the teammates celebrating and how happy they were around him.
03:22So that tells me a lot about him.
03:24And he is a pain in the ass to game plan against.
03:26And I'm glad we don't have to do that anymore.
03:29He makes other guys around him better.
03:30And I know he's excited to come in and be a big part of this culture.
03:33And we can't wait to get to work.
03:35But it's an exciting time.
03:37While also, you know, there is a part of it where, you know,
03:40you wish Jared versus the best.
03:42But we're excited about this guy.
03:44And he's why we're here and look forward to hearing from him.
03:47Hey, Miles, just for the record, Bubba did say you'd play Gunner for him.
03:51Yeah, and I said no.
03:54He did tell me that I owed him at least one game at Gunner.
03:57So we'll see about that.
03:58But, you know, very excited.
04:00And I want to thank you, Sean, Les, the Kroenke family for making this happen.
04:05Very excited to be here.
04:07You know, it's an honor and a blessing to be in this building.
04:10I have a lot of respect for, you know, all the guys here from the coaching staff,
04:16management, and, you know, many of the players.
04:18You know, I've got to see it, you know, firsthand.
04:20You know, it's a very quality team, quality business.
04:24And I like the way, you know, things operate.
04:26And I'm looking forward to helping the championship here at L.A.
04:31Yeah.
04:32Miles, Jim Hill, KCAL 9 News.
04:34First of all, welcome.
04:35And, Coach, congratulations.
04:36Let's talk just a little bit about how you feel coming here
04:39and knowing there's going to be a lot that this team is going to depend on
04:43because of you.
04:46Are they going to depend on me?
04:49A lot of success.
04:50I mean, a lot of people are going to say, you know,
04:52he's got to play well for them to win when it's a really good team,
04:55but they want to try and make sure that they want to know how you feel
04:59being a very important part of that team.
05:01That's always been my role to step foot into the NFL,
05:04so nothing changes for me.
05:05You know, I don't feel any pressure to be anything else
05:08or be anything different.
05:09As long as I'm myself and I come here to work every day
05:11and I'm a leader, you know, the success will follow.
05:15Miles, when did you find out about all this
05:17and what was your first thought and reaction?
05:21I found out about a week ago that this was even a possibility
05:24and, I mean, it was a surprise.
05:26It was a bit of excitement.
05:27You know, being in L.A., you know, have a lot of roots here
05:30and knowing that there's a winning culture
05:33and some great teammates and great coaches here,
05:36I was definitely looking forward to the opportunity
05:38and, you know, God willing to have it.
05:42You know, Miles had a no-trade clause,
05:44so I remember Andrew and I,
05:46I remember asking Andrew after about a month of talking,
05:49hey, I know Miles has a no-trade clause.
05:52Are we going to have gone through all this
05:53and he's going to say no?
05:55So it...
05:56So, Miles...
05:57Miles, what's the feeling going from a work in progress
06:01with this Cleveland team,
06:04it's been a work in progress for a while,
06:06to coming to this team that is the favorite
06:08to win the Super Bowl,
06:09and anything less than that would be a major disappointment?
06:13I mean, every team's a work in progress.
06:15Damn, that's how you feel, huh?
06:16Yeah.
06:20You know, on paper, I'm sure, you know, things look great.
06:23But, you know, we've got to go out there and put the work in.
06:25It starts in the field, starts in the classroom,
06:27and, you know, we're not going to take a single day for granted.
06:29We're not going to be looking at any, you know, odds or favorites.
06:33You know, we're going to, you know, win each game day by day.
06:36What is your impression of this defense
06:39and specifically the pass rush that you're joining?
06:42I mean, it's already very solid all around.
06:44You know, we have, you know, very talented guys in each position,
06:47and that's not just in, you know, my room,
06:49but, you know, getting guys like McDuffie,
06:53that was a big acquisition as well.
06:55So, I think it's very talented, you know, from the top to the bottom.
06:59As a man who added...
07:01Can you just take us through your day today,
07:03what it's been like since you touched out in L.A.?
07:06I don't even remember half my day.
07:09You know, hopped on a plane.
07:10First thing that happened was I hopped into, you know, a truck,
07:14went to get some physical, some testing, and now I'm here.
07:19So, it's been, you know, ripping and running since.
07:22Miles.
07:23Sean, one of the biggest questions that's popped up over the last 24 hours now
07:28is that the thought of Aaron Donald coming back,
07:31is that a possibility?
07:33Have you thought about it?
07:34Listen, if he's interested, you know, there is no...
07:38Here's what I would say.
07:38You talk to Aaron, and you see what he's saying about that.
07:41But here's what I would tell you guys overall, too,
07:44is, you know, Aaron's a guy that I stay really close in touch with,
07:48and I know the respect that he has for Miles.
07:50Talk to him about the opportunity to be able to bring him on board.
07:53If Aaron decides he wants to dust him off at the age of 35,
07:56I bet you he could still do it at a pretty high clip.
07:58But here's what I would tell you guys, too.
08:01You know, the one thing that's great about Miles,
08:02we're not going to ask him to do anything other than be himself
08:05and take it a day at a time, be totally and completely present.
08:08The last time...
08:09You guys remember who the Super Bowl favorites were before last season, right?
08:13No, you don't.
08:14Nobody remembers, okay?
08:15So, the point I'm making is, is like, hey, it's a fun narrative right now,
08:18but we're going to be inside out.
08:20We're going to earn it every single day.
08:21We had our first 11 on 11 today,
08:23and there's a lot of growth that we need to be able to have as a football team.
08:26And we're excited to get him in here,
08:28learning the different things that we'll ask of him.
08:31But we believe that he can impact the team in a significant way by being himself.
08:35You know, and then there's a lot of other guys.
08:38It's the greatest team sport that there is.
08:40I'm really excited about our team coming together
08:42because that's what every single year is about.
08:44And that happens one day at a time.
08:46We'll finish up this offseason program where it's this week, the following week,
08:49and then we'll come back in training camp, and we've got to be ready to rock.
08:53And then the goal will be to be able to peak when we start in Australia
08:56and then, you know, hopefully stay fortunate to stay healthy
08:59and continue to build and adjust and adapt as we go.
09:01But it's a long journey.
09:03We've got to be able to handle it.
09:04But most importantly is, you know, the caliber of people.
09:07How do we come together?
09:08How do we establish what this team really looks like?
09:10We are fortunate to have a lot of continuity,
09:12and there's excitement being able to add a player like that.
09:15But it's one day at a time, and I love everything that he said
09:18because there couldn't be more in agreement.
09:20And we're not going to let the outside-in narratives affect our ability
09:22to be courageous every single day and go swing and see what the hell happens.
09:26When we talked to you at the beginning of the offseason,
09:29you talked about finding the balance between short-term and long-term team building.
09:33The moves you've made, Trent McDuffie, Miles, Ty Simpson,
09:37how does that kind of play into trying to thread that needle?
09:40You're always threading that needle.
09:41But I think once we get to this time of year, this season is looming.
09:46It becomes the main thing, the more important thing, what you weigh the most.
09:50But you're always threading that needle for, you know, sustainability,
09:55trying to win consistently.
09:57That's a hard one to thread.
09:59Go ahead.
09:59Have you heard of LeBron?
10:02And what kind of advice has he given you through your career to help you navigate?
10:08I mean, I'm not sure, honestly.
10:10I've gotten a whole bunch of calls and texts.
10:12I've already missed a call from Coach early on, just my phone blowing up.
10:17But, you know, he's been a positive force in my life, you know,
10:24just giving advice when he can as far as, you know, transition,
10:28always trying to work through different situations early on in my career.
10:33And I'm sure we'll have some more conversations now being in the same city.
10:38So we'll see.
10:39But I haven't got to talk to him yet.
10:41Miles, when you look at just having the trust, obviously there's a lot of trust factors,
10:45coaches, players, things of that nature.
10:46But when you have an agent like Nicole Lynn who can obviously handle your business for you
10:51as far as making sure that things are done correctly,
10:53that way you can focus on the field, how much does that help,
10:55especially when you're transferring from one city to the other?
10:57Well, it's amazing, you know, knowing that I don't have to really have a large role
11:03and I know she's going to handle business and handle my business
11:06and have my best interest at heart.
11:08You know, I have no lack of trust in her or anyone on my team.
11:12So it's a blessing to have her in my corner.
11:14And I know she's always going to do right by myself and my family.
11:17And she made this possible as well as a lesson shown.
11:21I will say this for Nicole, wouldn't have been able to get this done
11:24without us working pretty tirelessly since the weekend.
11:30We didn't have a lot of time to discuss contract.
11:33But thank you, Nicole.
11:36Miles, what were your impressions of the Rams from afar,
11:40having played against them maybe a couple times and just watching over the years
11:44what they've been able to build here?
11:46What were your impressions of this organization?
11:51I mean, just talented.
11:54They love playing the game.
11:55They love playing the game for this guy, and that means a lot.
11:58You know, having a player's coach, you know, lead you onto that field
12:01and wanting to, you know, give the extra effort and go the extra mile for him
12:05and for each other, you know, that's kind of what you feel going on to that field.
12:09You know, these guys are going to war, you know, not just as individuals,
12:13but as a team, and, you know, that's how you end up playing those games
12:16later into the year.
12:18Miles, you talked about so much about Cleveland and what that city meant to you,
12:23but having a no-trade clause in this past week, what was it in your heart and soul
12:28that says, I'm going to do this, I'm going to make this change from a franchise
12:32that loved you and a city that loved you to come here?
12:36Well, I mean, since the very beginning, it's always been about winning.
12:41And, you know, it just breaks down to, you know, the timing of everything.
12:47You know, what does it realistically look like for, you know, to be a winner now
12:52and to have an opportunity to do that, you know, immediately, you know,
12:58that was an opportunity that was just, you know, too difficult to pass up.
13:01And, you know, I always have, you know, love in my heart for Cleveland City,
13:05you know, community, you know, all those players and everything else.
13:09But the opportunity to come here, have an immediate and, you know,
13:14profound impact on this team, you know, it was something I just, you know,
13:18had to move forward with.
13:19To follow up on that, was it an easy, did you have to sleep on it or did you say
13:23yes?
13:25No, definitely, definitely have to sleep on it.
13:28I don't take my time in Cleveland for granted.
13:31I did, you know, love being there.
13:34You know, my family have become, you know, really a part of the community.
13:39You know, you definitely have started to plant roots at a, you know, home and,
13:45you know, just becoming, you know, friends with, you know, all the people in your neighborhood
13:48and, you know, getting to know people and getting out and, you know,
13:51just feeling like this is, you know, your second home.
13:54You know, there's stuff like that, you know, it tears at you to leave and to,
13:58you know, to break away.
13:59But, you know, that's just a part of the things you learn to have to, you know,
14:05adjust to as you grow up and learn you have to move on.
14:09How much did you have to sort of mentally shift gears, leaving a team and coming to a city
14:15that's hosting the Super Bowl, seven primetime games for the Rams?
14:19Like, mentally, how exciting is that for you?
14:23I mean, games are, you know, no matter what time they are,
14:26they're still just the same old game.
14:29So I'm not worried whether they're played at 1 o'clock on Sunday or Thursday night
14:35or Sunday night, it makes no difference to me.
14:37We still got to shoot up and be who we're supposed to be.
14:39Sean, you talked about just how difficult it was to Mark and Jared.
14:43Ultimately, what made you believe this was the right?
14:46Yeah, I think, you know, number one, you really let the tape guide, you know,
14:51and to be able to, you know, it's hard when you, you know,
14:54to be able to get something great.
14:55Unfortunately, we had to give up something great.
14:58And not going to pretend to have all the answers,
15:00but when you do look at the body of work, what you envision in terms of the fit
15:05and how that can help the other 10 guys around
15:07and what are the different types of things that he elicits attention-wise,
15:10where are some opportunities that we can free him up
15:13or that he can offer opportunities for other guys to get the man's side of the protection
15:17or, you know, to be able to do some of those different types of things.
15:20But it was really the tape, you know,
15:22and ultimately sometimes we have to be able to make decisions
15:26that are best for the collective,
15:27and this is what we thought was best for our team,
15:29even though it affected somebody that's been a significant part
15:31in a negative way that we do love.
15:35But it was really, you know, it was a football decision,
15:37and that's kind of what guides our overall approach
15:40and our compass, if you will.
15:41But the first thing in the prerequisite was this is a special human.
15:45You know, it's not a special player.
15:47Yes, it's a special player, obviously, but it's a special person, special teammate,
15:51and those are the kind of things that we look at first and foremost
15:54and being able to welcome him with open arms.
15:55We're excited to have him be a huge part of this culture.
15:58Did you have a conversation with Jared before the trade?
16:01I did, yeah.
16:02What did you tell him?
16:04What would you guess I told him?
16:06Hey, you know, we talked to him about just the appreciation, the gratitude, Sarah,
16:10and, you know, and I think when you have to have those hard conversations,
16:13you just let him know.
16:14You know, we just, you know, executed a trade
16:16where we're acquiring Miles Garrett and you're going to Cleveland.
16:19And I know it doesn't feel great right now,
16:21but there's a lot of love, there's a lot of appreciation and gratitude
16:24for our relationship, the two years, the impact that you've made,
16:28and I can't wait to watch you go shine in Cleveland.
16:31But I will say this, you know, what a stud with the way that he handled it.
16:35You know, I was, I don't want to say I was surprised, but I was so impressed.
16:39And, you know, when Jordan and Christian eventually go through a challenging conversation,
16:42I hope they handle it the way that Jared Burst did.
16:45And I'm a big fan of his, you guys know that.
16:48And I'll wish him, you know, the best and watch him do his thing.
16:51But we are really excited, you know, with respect to Jared
16:54about being able to get this guy, and it's a big deal for us.
16:58Miles, did you have a conversation with Buddha Ford to get number 95 over there?
17:02And can you share maybe what that transaction was like to get that number?
17:06It was just a conversation.
17:08And, you know, it didn't take too much.
17:10Conversation and a couple bucks?
17:12Maybe more than a couple, but...
17:16He was open to it, and I understood that, you know,
17:20there had been some other numbered trades, you know, before me,
17:23so I based my decision off of that.
17:25But, you know, he understood, and I'm glad to be sticking with 95.
17:30Sean, what were your days like?
17:32Is there any no snowboarding clause on your contract?
17:35And either way, with such great snowboarding...
17:38I don't think I have the balance of snowboarding anyway,
17:40even if there wasn't, but, yeah, there is.
17:44What were your days, like, leading up to this?
17:46Obviously, it's been going on, you know, phone calls back and forth,
17:48where you just said, before you excited, like, you're going to get it back in the class?
17:51Yeah, well, I think the biggest thing when you're doing that is you're going through what are the exact parameters.
17:57You know, you knew you had an opportunity to be able to execute it, you know,
17:59but like we said, you know, there were certain things that we had to kind of get finalized with Andrew
18:04and Cleveland
18:05to be able to figure out exactly what it gets done with as far as what the execution and the
18:09agreement terms would be.
18:10But we were excited, you know, and now it's about being able to get to work.
18:14You know, I think this is all fun, and it's obviously, you know, a big deal,
18:17and our players are really excited to be able to welcome Miles.
18:20And now I know he's just like me, where we're excited to get to work and figure out how we
18:24can, you know,
18:25be able to do, you know, some cool stuff together.
18:27Yeah, Steve.
18:28Okay, Miles, I got to a quick follow-up to this one.
18:31First off, what about just playing on an offense that can get you a lead,
18:34playing with a quarterback like Matthew Stafford,
18:37where you're going to be facing a lot of no-capacity situations?
18:43I mean, that did play into the decision as well.
18:47You know, knowing I have the ability, you know, late game to pin my ears back,
18:50not just because we need a play to be made, but because we have the lead,
