00:00Standing before you, I think of the words of Jawaharlal Nehru.
00:07A moment comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new,
00:13when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance.
00:19Tonight we have stepped out from the old into the new.
00:22So let us speak now with clarity and conviction that cannot be misunderstood
00:31about what this new age will deliver and for whom.
00:36This will be an age where New Yorkers expect from their leaders a bold vision of what we will achieve,
00:43rather than a list of excuses for what we are too timid to attempt.
00:47Central to that vision will be the most ambitious agenda to tackle the cost of living crisis
00:57that this city has seen since the days of Fiora LaGuardia.
01:06An agenda that will freeze the rents for more than 2 million rent-stabilized tenants.
01:11Make buses fast and free.
01:19And deliver universal child care across our city.
01:27Years from now, may our only regret be that this day took so long to come.
01:35This new age will be one of relentless improvement.
01:41We will hire thousands more teachers.
01:47We will cut waste from a bloated bureaucracy.
01:51We will work tirelessly to make lights shine again in the hallways of NYCHA developments
01:58where they have long flickered.
01:59Safety and justice will go hand in hand as we work with police officers to reduce crime
02:10and create a department of community safety
02:13that tackles the mental health crisis and homelessness crises head-on.
02:20Excellence will become the expectation across government, not the exception.
02:25In this new age we make for ourselves,
02:32we will refuse to allow those who traffic in division and hate to pit us against one another.
02:41In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light.
02:50Here, we believe in standing up for those we love.
02:53Whether you are an immigrant,
02:57a member of the trans community,
03:00one of the many black women that Donald Trump has fired from a federal job,
03:07a single mom still waiting for the cost of groceries to go down,
03:12or anyone else with their back against the wall,
03:17your struggle is ours too.
03:19And we will build a city hall
03:25that stands steadfast alongside Jewish New Yorkers
03:29and does not waver in the fight against the scourge of anti-Semitism.
03:36Where the more than one million Muslims know that they belong.
03:40Not just in the five boroughs of this city,
03:46but in the halls of power.
03:51No more will New York be a city
03:54where you can traffic in Islamophobia
03:57and win an election.
03:58This new age will be defined by a competence
04:12and a compassion
04:13that have too long been placed at odds with one another.
04:18We will prove
04:19that there is no problem too large for government to solve
04:22and no concern too small for it to care about.
04:28For years,
04:30those in city hall have only helped those who can help them.
04:34But on January 1st,
04:37we will usher in a city government
04:39that helps everyone.
04:40Now I know that many have heard our message
04:47only through the prism of misinformation.
04:51Tens of millions of dollars have been spent
04:54to redefine reality
04:56and to convince our neighbors
04:58that this new age is something that should frighten them.
05:01As has so often occurred,
05:06the billionaire class has sought to convince
05:08those making $30 an hour
05:10that their enemies are those earning $20 an hour.
05:16They want the people to fight amongst ourselves
05:19so that we remain distracted
05:21from the work of remaking a long broken system.
05:26We refuse to let them dictate the rules of the game anymore.
05:31They can play by the same rules
05:35as the rest of us.
05:40Together,
05:41we will usher in a generation of change.
05:45And if we embrace
05:46this brave new course,
05:48rather than fleeing from it,
05:50we can respond to oligarchy
05:52and authoritarianism
05:54with the strength it fears,
05:56not the appeasement it craves.
06:01After all,
06:04if anyone can show a nation
06:06betrayed by Donald Trump
06:07how to defeat him,
06:09it is the city that gave rise to him.
06:12And if there is any way
06:18to terrify a despot,
06:20it is by dismantling
06:21the very conditions
06:22that allowed him to accumulate power.
06:25This is not only how we stop Trump,
06:31it is how we stop the next one.
06:37So Donald Trump,
06:39since I know you are watching,
06:42I have four words for you.
06:47Turn the volume up.
06:49We will hold bad landlords to account
07:14because the Donald Trumps of our city
07:17have grown far too comfortable
07:19taking advantage of their tenants.
07:23We will put an end
07:24to the culture of corruption
07:26that has allowed billionaires like Trump
07:28to evade taxation
07:30and exploit tax breaks.
07:34We will stand alongside unions
07:37and expand labor protections
07:39because we know,
07:41just as Donald Trump does,
07:44that when working people
07:47have ironclad rights,
07:48the bosses who seek to extort them
07:51become very small indeed.
07:56New York will remain
07:58a city of immigrants,
08:00a city built by immigrants,
08:03powered by immigrants,
08:06and as of tonight,
08:11led by an immigrant.
08:12So hear me,
08:29President Trump,
08:30when I say this,
08:31to get to any of us,
08:33you will have to get through
08:35all of us.
08:36When we enter City Hall
08:45in 58 days,
08:47expectations will be high.
08:50We will meet them.
08:54A great New Yorker once said
08:57that while you campaign in poetry,
08:59you govern in prose.
09:01If that must be true,
09:04let the prose we write
09:06still rhyme
09:07and let us build
09:08a shining city for all.
09:13And we must chart a new path,
09:16as bold as the one
09:17we have already traveled.
09:19After all,
09:20the conventional wisdom
09:22would tell you
09:22that I am far
09:23from the perfect candidate.
09:24I am young,
09:27despite my best efforts
09:28to grow older.
09:30I am Muslim.
09:35I am a democratic socialist.
09:42And most damning of all,
09:45I refuse to apologize
09:46for any of this.
09:47And yet,
09:53if tonight teaches us anything,
09:56it is that convention
09:57has held us back.
10:00We have bowed
10:02at the altar of caution
10:03and we have paid
10:04a mighty price.
10:07Too many working people
10:08cannot recognize themselves
10:10in our party.
10:11And too many among us
10:13have turned to the right
10:15for answers to why
10:16they've been left behind.
10:18We will leave mediocrity
10:20in our past.
10:23No longer will we have
10:24to open a history book
10:26for proof that Democrats
10:27can dare to be great.
10:32Our greatness
10:33will be anything
10:34but abstract.
10:36It will be felt
10:37by every rent-stabilized tenant
10:40who wakes up
10:40on the first of every month.
10:44Knowing the amount
10:45they're going to pay
10:47hasn't soared
10:48since the month before.
10:50It will be felt
10:51by each grandparent
10:53who can afford
10:54to stay in the home
10:55they have worked for.
10:58And whose grandchildren
10:59live nearby
11:00because the cost
11:01of child care
11:03didn't send them
11:04to Long Island.
11:06It will be felt
11:08by the single mother
11:09who is safe
11:10on her commute
11:11and whose bus
11:12runs fast enough
11:13that she doesn't have
11:14to rush school drop-off
11:16to make it to work on time.
11:20And it will be felt
11:21when New Yorkers
11:23open their newspapers
11:25in the morning
11:25and read headlines
11:27of success
11:28not scandal.
11:29Most of all
11:33it will be felt
11:35by each New Yorker
11:36when the city
11:37they love
11:37finally loves
11:39them back.
11:44Together
11:45New York
11:46we're going to
11:48freeze the
11:49together
11:50New York
11:52we're going to
11:53make buses
11:53fast and
11:54together
11:56New York
11:57we're going to
11:58deliver a universal
11:59let the words
12:03we've spoken
12:04together
12:04the dreams
12:06we've dreamt
12:07together
12:07become the
12:09agenda
12:09we deliver
12:10together.
12:16New York
12:17this power
12:19it's yours
12:21this city
12:23belongs
