Zohran Mamdani as the city’s next mayor. Some residents, like lifelong New Yorker Patricia Ferrari, hailed his landslide victory as “a time for new blood” and voiced confidence in his intelligence and compassion to bring positive change after years of “bad politics.” Others, however, were deeply disheartened. Elena Scemama, a lawyer, called the day “a national mourning day,” accusing Mamdani of spreading “hate and division” and labeling his policies “unrealistic” and “hypocritical.” Working-class voices like Yusuf, an exterminator, viewed the result as a reflection of national frustration with government failures, while Tom Sullivan, a business owner, worried that Mamdani’s socialist agenda would threaten America’s entrepreneurial spirit. Yet visitors like Ashlyn Rancudo described the moment as “inspiring and hopeful,” capturing a city split between optimism and alarm over a historic political shift.

02:02It's time we have some new blood and this is the time to try it.
02:07I'm really very confident it's going to be a good term.
02:13We've had so much of the bad politics for so many reasons and people are excited about
02:21this.
02:22They're going to put their best foot forward for a time and I think that he will do such
02:30a good job because he's so smart and caring.
02:35I actually think that today is a national morning day.
02:40It's kind of appalling that this is what we've come to.
02:44The speech that he said right after winning was very disheartening.
02:50That I think this man spreads a lot of hate, divide across society and that a lot of his
02:59policies are unrealistic and the hypocrisy coming from his background, you know, as a privileged
03:06person from Uganda, you know, who's never had to work a day in his life.
03:11The hypocrisy is quite grand.
03:14I think the results is indicative of what's going on in America's politics at this moment
03:20with the shutdown of the government.
03:23Poor people are not receiving the benefits that they actually need.
03:27And I think America is really tired of what's going on.
03:30Well, my main concern is that his promises can't really be fulfilled.
03:37Some of them can be.
03:39But he's basically set the tone and the direction for a socialist system.
03:45That system we don't believe works.
03:47The United States is the most entrepreneurial country in the world.
03:51So I think it's very inspiring and hopeful and just even like seeing people on the transit,
03:56like getting the news that had happened last night was, we were having like a moment as
04:02well, even not being local.
04:04So it was, it was, it's been great and yeah, just very hopeful and encouraging and yeah, dignifying
