00:00McDonald's wants you back in the store. Their plan? Upgraded playgrounds, better chicken tenders, and a drink menu that competes
00:07with Dutch Bros.
00:08So has the delivery era peaked, and is this the fast food industry finally admitting it? Here's what's happening.
00:13At their Las Vegas convention this week, McDonald's unveiled McDonald's next. Their big plan to win you back by revitalizing
00:20their in-store experience.
00:22But McDonald's isn't alone. Pizza Hut is retrofitting dozens of locations with the full 80s diner revival.
00:27We're talking stained glass lamps, arcade games, salad bars, and the famous red plastic cups.
00:33Families are reportedly driving hours just to get that taste of nostalgia.
00:36And Starbucks built an entire relaunch around reclaiming the third place aesthetic.
00:41Comfy chairs, ceramic mugs, and a push away from grab-and-go.
00:45Which raises a couple questions.
00:46Has the delivery era peaked, leaving people genuinely wanting somewhere to go?
00:50Or do these companies just want you back in their stores spending money because you spend more money when you
00:56sit down?
00:56Here's what the numbers actually have to say.
00:58Delivery spending fell 12% last year while pickup orders grew by 14%.
01:03One study found delivery now costs nearly 80% more than pickup or drive-thru once fees are added.
01:09So the convenience era hasn't died, it just got a little too expensive for most people.
01:13McDonald's CEO Chris K's own Next Memo said the goal is to bring in more customers more often and improve
01:19unit economics.
01:20That's corporate ease for get more money per visit.
01:23Critics say the nostalgia plays are just a distraction.
01:25The share of customers who called McDonald's a good value fell from 55% to 40% from 2020 to
01:312024.
01:32Adding that a warmer dining room doesn't fix a $6 medium fry, supporters point to Starbucks as proof of success.
01:39Since launching back to Starbucks, the chain has reversed two years of declining foot traffic.
01:43Starbucks founder Howard Schultz put it simply,
01:45people all over the world are longing for human connection.
01:49So here's the question.
01:50When a fast food chain builds you a cozy place to sit, is that hospitality or are they just building
01:55you a larger sales floor?
