00:00Starbucks just partnered with the most controversial chatbot on the internet to help you decide what to order.
00:05But does this idea have grounds? Here's what's happening.
00:08So Starbucks just launched a beta app inside ChatGPT.
00:12Just type at Starbucks into a prompt, describe your mood, what you're craving, or even what you're wearing, and it'll
00:18suggest a drink.
00:19You can customize it and pick your location, but you still have to finish the actual order in the Starbucks
00:25app.
00:25This is Starbucks trying to meet Gen Z where they already are before they end up at Dutch Bros.
00:30But how much does a partnership like this cost Starbucks?
00:33Well, OpenAI doesn't publish what it charges for partnerships like this, but if it's anything like its deals with Shopify
00:39and Etsy last year,
00:40they're likely paying a fee on every transaction that flows through ChatGPT.
00:44Leading skeptics of the coffee giant to question whether this collab is worth it, considering they're focused on cost-cutting
00:50over the last few years.
00:51Analysts have already noted that with features like this, the novelty tends to drive a spike in week one,
00:56but then most people just go back to ordering in the Starbucks app.
00:59Supporters say this is a smart play anyway.
01:02ChatGPT already has hundreds of millions of users every day, and now instead of just asking what to have for
01:07dinner,
01:08they can ask it what to drink on the way there.
01:09But like always, the critics aren't buying it.
01:12They point out that Starbucks and ChatGPT are two of the most boycotted brands in the country right now.
01:17Starbucks over its labor and political controversies, ChatGPT over its labor displacement,
01:22and pretty much everything else that's surrounding an AI company right now.
01:25And handing your preferences and location to a chatbot just to get drink recommendations?
01:29Some people are calling that a lot of personal data for a $9 latte.
01:33So, is this the future of ordering coffee, or is this just two controversial companies trying to make each other
01:38look normal?
01:39Are you going to use the feature?
