00:00The Garden Rescue Team are back.
00:02Hallelujah!
00:04This time Lee,
00:06He and Eve,
00:07He and Eve,
00:08Charlie,
00:09Busy, busy little bee.
00:10Chris,
00:11Sometimes you need to go old school.
00:13And Flo,
00:14Hello!
00:15will be joined by four familiar faces from the gardening world.
00:19OK, let's gallop on then.
00:21Go on then.
00:21Yee-haw!
00:22Joe,
00:23Team Garden Rescue.
00:25Sue,
00:25We've got a little vignette of pots.
00:28Dermot,
00:28I think I've been accepted into the game.
00:31And Francis.
00:32You just can't beat a cherry tree.
00:34In each garden,
00:35two of our designers will go head to head.
00:37We've decided to go for...
00:40Flo's design!
00:41Yes!
00:42Come on!
00:44And the winning designer...
00:45Does that make me the boss?
00:47Gets a helping hand from the runner-up.
00:50Stop pulling!
00:51It's garden war!
00:52That is fantastic!
00:54Turning garden dreams
00:56into reality.
00:58Open your eyes.
00:59Oh, my God!
01:00That is incredible!
01:02Oh, my God!
01:04This is gorgeous!
01:06This is our garden!
01:07This is our garden!
01:13Today, the team's in Stockport,
01:16tackling a garden for a growing family.
01:19Go, go, go, go!
01:20Go, go, go!
01:21I'm Sasha.
01:23I'm Rick.
01:24And we're from Stockport.
01:26One, two, three!
01:27Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
01:29So we've got a two-year-old daughter, Jocelyn.
01:33Yeah.
01:33And we have a baby boy joining us very, very soon.
01:38In the next few weeks, really.
01:40And then we've got Nelly, the rescue dog.
01:42Oh, yeah.
01:42She's a huge part of the family, isn't she?
01:45She's a...
01:45Yeah, she's a smashing dog.
01:46Yeah.
01:46She really is.
01:48Two years ago, they bought their first ever home together.
01:53We moved in in 2023, and we love the house.
01:57It's an Edwardian house.
01:59We love the period features in the house.
02:03We love the fireplaces and the stained glass window,
02:06the amount of space it offers.
02:08It was a real TARDIS when we came to view it.
02:10We didn't realise how big it was.
02:12Yeah.
02:12We could just see ourselves not really outgrowing it.
02:15But it's taken Rick a bit of elbow grease
02:18and some newly learnt skills to bring it to life.
02:22DIY.
02:22It wasn't my thing, but it's definitely my thing now.
02:25But I have enjoyed it, actually.
02:28There's loads to do.
02:28It's been quite an undertaking, yeah.
02:31But the effort sprucing up their first house
02:34hasn't quite made it to their first ever garden.
02:41So, this is it.
02:42This is the garden.
02:43It really needs some love.
02:48As you can see, this is a very strange section.
02:51It's not really big enough to do anything on.
02:54Yeah, you can't really host in this tiny space.
02:57No.
02:58And the yard isn't safe for young legs, either.
03:01You've got the cracked concrete,
03:03and then you've got these steps,
03:05which are just a big trip hazard,
03:07with all different levels.
03:09And this wonky kind of wall for this weed area.
03:13And then you've got this path,
03:15which just leads to nowhere.
03:20And then, obviously, we've got this pond, which...
03:22It's just disused,
03:24and we don't want any more with young children.
03:26No.
03:27This lawn is just ruined by yelly.
03:30Yeah, and it's a shame,
03:31because this is such a nice area for the sun in the evenings.
03:35It'd be great if something could happen here.
03:37Mm.
03:37So, the couple feel it's time
03:39to give daughter Jocelyn somewhere to explore.
03:44She's into wildlife and butterflies.
03:48Yeah, we love going for walks.
03:51We always have, haven't we?
03:52And just love hearing the different sounds of the bird songs
03:56and seeing the different trees
03:58and sharing that with Jossie.
04:00A new garden can't come soon enough.
04:03It'd just be amazing to have an extra room,
04:06which a garden is, with two young children.
04:09I wouldn't even know where to start with a garden, to be honest.
04:12We massively need some help with it.
04:15It's more than a room, isn't it?
04:16It's your only outdoor space,
04:19your own little escape.
04:20So, yeah, it'd be great.
04:25Raring to create Rick and Sasha's garden
04:27is resident garden rescue designer Flo Hedlum,
04:30along with calm and contemporary designer Joe Swift.
04:35Sun's come out, Flo. You need a hat.
04:37I need a hat. Oh, yeah.
04:39Maybe we'll get matching hats.
04:40You should see my hat, man.
04:41Ah!
04:42Yeah.
04:45Right, so we've got Sasha and Richard.
04:48Yeah.
04:48They live in Stockport with their daughter Jocelyn
04:50and their dog, Nelly.
04:52So this is what we're dealing with.
04:54So this is a view looking up at the house.
04:56OK.
04:57So they've got this path that just runs down the middle,
04:59cuts the whole garden into.
05:00Cuts it completely in half, doesn't it?
05:02This might be hiding something interesting.
05:04OK.
05:05Yeah, quite a bit to reuse as well.
05:07So that's quite a nice bit of stone on there.
05:09And then this is the raised bed,
05:11just down from that patio,
05:13which is a great big bed for planting up.
05:16But design-wise, there's not a lot going on
05:18and there's very few plants.
05:20It's not very exciting, is it?
05:21Because it's just a big sort of space.
05:22You just see the boundaries.
05:24Shall we see what they want?
05:25Let's.
05:27So, Joe and Flo,
05:29the theme of Garden We'd Love
05:31is an English country garden theme.
05:33We'd love loads of interesting and vibrant plants
05:36and flowers that the local wildlife
05:38would just come and visit us.
05:41Oh, that's nice.
05:42Yeah, I could get behind that.
05:44Definitely.
05:45Really behind that.
05:45We'd love to have a separated space
05:48so that in the winter months,
05:50when it gets really muddy in the grass side,
05:53that we could just let Nelly out
05:54to the toilet without having to constantly be wiping her feet.
05:58OK, so it's got to be practical as well.
06:00Yeah, yeah.
06:01Yeah.
06:01And just that beginning space in the garden
06:03to have that somewhere that we host at Friends and Family.
06:07Everyone wants to, like, eat outside, sit outside.
06:10You know, it's part of the living outside experience, isn't it?
06:12Totally.
06:13Yeah, make it a fun, vibrant space
06:15that we just want to create loads of lovely memories as a family.
06:19Great.
06:20That's loads of potential, isn't it?
06:21Just for creating lots of different little elements
06:24in the garden for surprise.
06:26So, Joe and Flo,
06:27I know you've got your work cut out there,
06:29but, yeah, please help us.
06:32I really like this brief.
06:33The idea is sort of a wild, almost country garden,
06:36but right in the middle of the city.
06:38And it's big enough
06:38that actually you can put lots of different elements in there.
06:41So what's the budget, Flo?
06:42$4,000.
06:43OK.
06:44Yeah, which is small-ish,
06:46but there's lots of materials we can reuse.
06:49And also, you know,
06:49you want to keep a good proportion of that for the planting.
06:52Absolutely.
06:52Which is the fun bit.
06:53That's what creates the magic, isn't it?
06:55Yeah.
06:55I want to win this one.
06:56So do I.
06:57OK, right.
07:00Game on, then.
07:01Yeah.
07:02Flo and Joe will create designs
07:04that will meet Rick and Sasha's £4,000 budget.
07:08Once the favourite has been chosen,
07:10the losing designer will help with the build.
07:13A top team of landscapers
07:15will provide their labour for free
07:17so the full budget can be spent on materials and plants.
07:26Back in Stockport,
07:28the final designs are in.
07:30OK.
07:31Right, the videos are here.
07:33Shall we watch them?
07:34Yeah.
07:35Let's do it.
07:38Sasha and Richard,
07:39this is my design for your wild English garden.
07:42I love the brief
07:43because I love the idea of going out there
07:45and being surrounded by nature
07:47and it's a place for kids to learn
07:49and immerse themselves in flowers,
07:52butterflies, bees, the whole lot.
07:54Wow.
07:55Wow.
07:56Hi, Sasha and Richard.
07:57I'm so excited to bring you my design
07:59of an English country garden.
08:01Now, you have these lovely brick walls.
08:04They have a lot of characters,
08:05so I've kept that.
08:07But what I've done
08:07is levelled this whole area here
08:10so you can move from the path
08:13onto the herringbone patio step free.
08:17Oh, that's amazing
08:18that she's addressed the steps.
08:20Yeah.
08:21So this will be an area
08:21where you can sit
08:23and this raised bed here
08:26is the perfect space
08:28for creating that wonderful country garden feel.
08:32I love all these plants here,
08:35these flowers.
08:35Yeah, God, all the colours.
08:38OK, I'm going to start
08:39from those little walls
08:41that you've already got.
08:42You're leaving those in.
08:43From there,
08:43I just want to keep this one level,
08:46making it much bigger
08:47so that you can have
08:48a table and chairs on there,
08:50the barbecue that you wanted.
08:51That becomes the main family space.
08:54But along one side here,
08:55I think this would be perfect
08:56for growing veggies,
08:58herbs, some fruit.
09:00Wow.
09:00And, you know,
09:00you can just literally pick the herbs up
09:02and cook straight with them here.
09:03So this is a sort of eating,
09:05dining, growing, cooking area.
09:08Oh, that would be nice.
09:09That would be so nice
09:10with the kids as well.
09:11Both Flo and Joe
09:13have used the first half of the garden
09:15for an entertaining area on one side
09:17and planting bed on the other.
09:20Flo, however,
09:21wants to go one step further.
09:23You also wanted a place
09:24to fire up the barbecue.
09:26And this area here
09:27is a second patio.
09:28And I've created
09:29a covered space.
09:30So you can sit there
09:32throughout the year.
09:33And I've given you
09:34festoon lights
09:35and in the evening
09:35you can imagine
09:36when you're sitting there,
09:37the lights are on.
09:39It's just, like,
09:40lovely, moody
09:41and atmospheric.
09:42You can just see yourself
09:43hosting friends and family
09:45and that space.
09:45It looks very spacious as well.
09:47Yeah.
09:48To divide the bottom half
09:50of the garden,
09:51Joe's using something
09:52from Rick and Sasha's wish list.
09:55I love the idea
09:55of just going through this gate,
09:57through this picket fence
09:58and you're in
09:58the main garden area
10:00surrounded by flowers
10:01planting either side
10:03of the picket fence
10:04as well
10:04to really soften it.
10:05Yeah, I really like
10:06the whitest
10:07very English country garden.
10:09Then you're into
10:10a gravel path.
10:10So you're walking
10:12down the garden,
10:13meanderings through the garden.
10:14You've got another
10:15seating area on the left here,
10:17built-in seat
10:18with an archway.
10:19Joe's also given them
10:20an oval lawn
10:21for the family
10:22to picnic on
10:23and space to play
10:25for Jocelyn
10:25and the new baby.
10:27Yeah, that'd be nice.
10:28It'd be so nice
10:29when you're working from home
10:30and we can have a picnic
10:31with the kids
10:32and the lawn together.
10:32Yeah, that'd be brilliant.
10:33Now, the journey
10:34through the garden
10:34is no longer
10:35just a straight line
10:36but I've used
10:38your existing
10:38stepping stones
10:39because actually
10:40they're in really good nick
10:41and where we can
10:42we like to reuse
10:42and recycle
10:43and repurpose.
10:44So the path
10:45goes across the garden
10:46then lengthways
10:48and then across the garden
10:49and lengthways again.
10:50So you're taking in
10:51different views
10:52as you're going
10:53down the garden
10:54not forgetting
10:55that you've got
10:55a play area.
10:56Yeah, I like the idea
10:57of going down
10:59the garden like that.
11:00Every garden's
11:01got to have
11:01somewhere to go
11:02at the end
11:03and this is
11:04maybe a storytelling area
11:06for the kids
11:07a couple of simple benches
11:08but then as the kids
11:09grow up
11:10it could be
11:10a perfect place
11:11for a den
11:12you know
11:12because you've got
11:13to have a den
11:13in a garden, right?
11:14And again
11:15you get a lot of light.
11:16Yeah, that's where
11:17we get the light
11:17at the end there.
11:18Then I'm also
11:19going to use
11:20your chimney pots
11:21four of them
11:22and just dot them
11:23around this seating
11:25area here.
11:26All the colours
11:27as well
11:27are just gorgeous.
11:30Flo's also giving
11:31the chimney pots
11:32a new lease of life
11:33as well as repurposing
11:35the old pond
11:35in the corner.
11:36So I'll drain it
11:38and I'll make it
11:39into a fernery.
11:41That would be great
11:42for the wildlife
11:42and all the birds
11:44and bees
11:44to come visit.
11:45Yeah.
11:46So I've had fun
11:47using some elements
11:48that are already
11:49in your garden
11:50but also just creating
11:51this wonderful space
11:53for you and your family
11:54to enjoy.
11:55So come on
11:56pick me
11:56let's do this
11:57and let's get on with it.
11:59Yeah, it does look
12:00like all great space
12:01to spend time
12:02and yeah
12:03really inviting space.
12:04And then the planting
12:06I'm so excited
12:07there's going to be
12:08hollyhocks
12:09delphinium
12:10climbers all over
12:11your boundaries
12:12and everything
12:12and the amount
12:14of wildlife
12:14that's going to bring
12:15in is so exciting
12:16and I just think
12:17it's going to be
12:17the perfect place
12:18for a kid
12:19to grow up.
12:21Now I know
12:21I'm up against
12:22Flo on this
12:22but come on
12:24this
12:24has got to be
12:26the design
12:26hasn't it?
12:27Wow.
12:28Oh my god
12:29both of them
12:30have blown my mind
12:32like they're incredible.
12:34How are we going
12:34to choose here?
12:35I don't know
12:35it's so tough.
12:43Right
12:44we've got both
12:44of the designs
12:45have you got
12:46a favourite?
12:48I don't know
12:49I mean
12:49I like
12:50loads about both of them.
12:52I know
12:52I love that Flo's
12:53really addressed
12:54some of the
12:55functional issues
12:56that we've got
12:56as a family
12:57and I love
12:58that she's
12:59added the
12:59pergola
13:00for privacy
13:01the festoon
13:02lights
13:04but then
13:05I do love
13:05Jo's
13:06English
13:06country garden
13:07I love
13:08the vibes
13:09of both
13:10and lots
13:10of flowers
13:11and
13:13god
13:13it's really
13:14really tough
13:14what are we
13:15going to do?
13:18So you happy
13:19with your designs
13:20now Flo?
13:20Yeah
13:20I think
13:21both of them
13:22are award winning
13:25we'll see about that
13:26won't we?
13:26Or even just winning
13:27I'll be happy with that
13:33right

15:15going through the middle of the garden
15:17we're going to reuse the existing brick terrace over there
15:20nice
15:20extend it using the existing flags
15:22there's a really nice meandering self-bind path
15:26which we're going to incorporate into the garden
15:28and lots of lush planting
15:30everyone ready for it
15:31yes ma'am
15:31ready for it
15:32let's go
15:34in order to create more of a blank canvas
15:36the team get to work removing the lawn of the old pathway
15:40so the turf can be stripped
15:41the grass is really overgrown here
15:44and when you scrape it back
15:45there's lots of hidden treasures under the ground
15:46like all this grain here
15:50Susie and Danny are also uncovering hidden gems
15:53oh wow look at that
15:54yeah it's not too bad is it
15:56yes
15:56brilliant
15:57bit of a wash off
15:59and that looked really nice
15:59that's eight square metres of the garden taken care of
16:02well that's a start
16:03that's a small battle
16:04in a big war
16:08as Tori clears more treasure
16:11we found the chimney
16:14Susie's cracking on with getting the grass up
16:16but there's a problem
16:18the heavy machinery hasn't arrived
16:20that's alright take care
16:22yeah
16:23it's not going to turn up until 11am
16:25oh lord
16:26ten past nine
16:29that is annoying
16:31but
16:32there's not a lot we can do about it
16:35with the turf cutter and digger delayed
16:38Dan's busy prepping the existing herringbone patio
16:41ready to be levelled
16:43because it's just been laid the old fashioned way
16:45just dirt and sand basically
16:46it's all sort of like migrated
16:48it's moved off slightly
16:49and the gaps have opened up
16:50so I'm just going to pick off these
16:51sort of the N2 rows
16:54put a better base in
16:55and then tighten it all back up again
16:56and then once the paving's all around it
16:58that will hold it all in tight
16:59so it won't be able to move again
17:02the brick patio will be extended
17:04by nearly eight square metres
17:06using a mix of new sandstone tiles
17:08and recycled concrete slabs
17:11opposite will be a vegetable patch
17:14at the moment it's a mound of earth and shrubbery
17:17held back by a wall
17:19you know sometimes you underestimate
17:21the strength of a plant
17:22I think I just did that
17:24in order to levelled it out
17:26the team desperately need the digger
17:29but luckily
17:30one thing has arrived
17:33yay we got some kit lads
17:35finally
17:36we can get this turf lifted
17:39with the turf cutter on site
17:41Kyle puts it to work
17:45still no digger
17:46almost lunchtime
17:48but we're making progress
17:51Danny's down here
17:52just prepping the area
17:54ready for the paving
17:56Kyle
17:57and Sam
17:58and Tori
17:59are ripping up all the lawn for us
18:01so that clears the way
18:02for all the borders
18:03we're just waiting on that digger
18:05for that big pile of soil
18:06there to be moved
18:08with the digger still in transit
18:10there's one last bit of deconstruction
18:12of the garden
18:14the pond in the bottom corner
18:17we're just going to take it out
18:19because Sasha and Rick have got
18:20one young kid
18:21and another one on the way
18:23and an old pond really isn't going to be that safe for them
18:27it looks pretty grim actually
18:29I'm not looking forward to taking that water out
18:34before she has the pleasure of draining the pond
18:37Susie must first prise out the old edging
18:40and concrete surround
18:41it's worse than trying to get teeth out
18:44the next step is to get the pond filled in
18:47and just in time
18:48there's been a delivery
18:50hey
18:51it's here
18:52it's here
18:52okay
18:53can we start digging now
18:54yes please
18:55can I start digging
18:55I can get off my spade at last
18:57okay
18:59digger in
19:00Dan quickly moves nearly one ton of soil
19:03from where the vegetable patch will go
19:05into the pond
19:06to create level spaces in both areas
19:14despite a delayed digger
19:16the team have romped ahead
19:19right the patio's going down
19:21I think it'll look quite cool
19:24with the existing and new patio fixed and laid
19:27the oval lawn is down
19:29garden levelled
19:30and pond filled
19:31it's time to down tools
19:33ready for Joe and Flo's keen eye
19:35in the morning
19:44so here we are Flo
19:45sunny Stockport
19:46it is sunny
19:47well it will be eventually
19:48it will be
19:49yeah
19:49the forecast is good
19:51that's why I've got my hat today
19:52I've got a little pit cap as well
19:54bring it on
19:55bring it on sunshine
19:56yeah I like this brief as well
19:57the idea is for the view
19:58of bringing a bit of the English countryside
20:01into the suburbs
20:03and they've got a baby on the way
20:05so it's literally going to be a garden
20:07that they're going to grow with
20:09did you see what I did there
20:11I see what you did there
20:11but I like it
20:12it's going to be a good one
20:13yeah
20:20oh wow yeah
20:21oh my gosh
20:22they've been busy
20:23yeah it's coming on nicely isn't it
20:25oh
20:25first thing I spot is the herringbone patio
20:28now it's exposed
20:29it's a beautiful feature isn't it
20:31it's lovely isn't it
20:32yeah it's nice to keep
20:33an original feature like that
20:34and keeps that essence of the garden
20:36yeah
20:37so the garden's divided into three sections
20:39we've got the seating area
20:40and the sort of vegetable potager
20:43potager love it
20:44and then there's a middle section
20:46where I want you to sort of get stuck in
20:48right
20:48is this sort of really wild English sort of feel
20:51with picket fence running through
20:53oh nice
20:54and it gets all a little bit
20:55not Alice in Wonderland
20:56but magical
20:57yeah magical and romantic
20:59and romantic
21:00oh right that's a bit of me
21:01yes
21:02and in the end section
21:03it's got that big bay that's overgrown
21:05I'm going to do something with that
21:06yeah
21:06make it look majestic
21:08I'm going to make it look majestic
21:10I'm going to try to anyway
21:11but I want you in the middle
21:13I'm in the middle
21:13I want you controlling that zone
21:15so the picket fence needs painting
21:17you got your overalls
21:18I'm always up for painting
21:20yes
21:20excellent
21:21I'll make do
21:21good brilliant
21:22I'm just going to go and get myself a coffee
21:23okay
21:25I'm in charge guys
21:26as you were
21:27great job
21:29Joe's first task
21:30addressing the overgrown bay tree
21:33at the bottom of the garden
21:34I feel like David Bellamy
21:36this is a cooking bay
21:38you know
21:39but there's only so much you need for cooking
21:41mmm
21:42smells glorious
21:43so yeah
21:44the idea really
21:45is to take all this lower gross off
21:48prune it right back to the main trunk
21:50so that you're basically lifting the crown
21:52probably end up about sort of nose level
21:55I reckon
21:56so I'll start with the loppers
21:58and try and make a hole
21:59so I can get in there
22:01and it just feels a bit overgrown
22:02it feels a bit neglected
22:04and this is a way of sort of
22:05showing it a bit of love I guess
22:08the aim is to reveal the main trunk
22:10so Joe uses the loppers
22:12to remove the thinner branches
22:14the robin's coming here with me
22:19and uses a saw to take off the thicker stems
22:21and the remaining pegs
22:24and also
22:25you want to get your secateurs out
22:27and just
22:27it's a bit finessing
22:29we call it
22:30just to make a nice even
22:33sort of lower level
22:35so there you go
22:36looks good doesn't it
22:38it stands proud
22:39just got to deal with all this greenery now
22:41hmm
22:43I think we'll get some help
22:49we're repurposing these
22:52granite sets here
22:53which form the old border along the back there
22:55which is no more
22:57and it's just to sort of
22:58add a bit of nice detail
22:59and delineate where this picket fence gate will go
23:02and to buy these
23:04you're probably talking like
23:05a pounder set or something
23:07so it's nice to recycle them
23:08put them to use
23:11right this pink line here
23:13is the line where the picket fence is going to be
23:15now in Joe's design
23:17this is a separation from the main seating area
23:21and this middle section that he's tasked me with
23:23so this fencing gate is really critical
23:26because it means that Nelly their rescue dog
23:28can be in this part of the garden
23:29and not running around
23:30taking mucky paws back into the house
23:32that's my job now
23:33getting on with this
23:34so gloves on
23:35and I'm going to get busy
23:37Flo needs to create eight post holes
23:40for the batons and upright slats to attach to
23:44team garden rescue
23:45yes Joe
23:46oh yeah okay
23:48I want to bring the plants in
23:50and this seems like a very sensible storage place to put them
23:53that bit's done with
23:55but not these slabs
23:57so we can go on the herringbone
23:59okay
23:59so I guess what I'm saying is
24:01can we get any barrows off
24:02I was just trying to be polite about it
24:04yeah move this stuff now
24:07with space created
24:08Flo gets a first look at Joe's selection
24:11there's a van of plants
24:14there's a van full of plants
24:14do you reckon I left the keys in
24:16yeah yeah you go around the front
24:17come on let's just drive off in it
24:18come on let's have them
24:19I'll get in the back and hold everything in place
24:23great selection here
24:24beautiful look at this viburnum
24:26they're gorgeous they're gorgeous
24:27I just love that sea of green
24:29with just those little sort of pops of colour
24:32there's purples
24:33that lovely claret in the naughtier
24:36and lots of whites to go with the picket
24:38you know keep it light
24:39and airy
24:40yeah absolutely
24:40and romantic
24:41and romantic
24:42romantic
24:43of course
24:43I'm taking that theme
24:44yeah lovely set
24:45and there's a couple of trees on it
24:46we've got an apple tree
24:47there's a nice big birch
24:48for the back right hand corner
24:49yeah
24:50they've got the lot in here
24:51they've got the lot
24:51so we better get them off
24:52better get them off
24:53look at these beautiful ferns
24:55and that ornamental grass
24:57ooh
24:59lush
25:08that's a four metre tree
25:10that is instant impact
25:12if ever I've seen it
25:13plants unloaded
25:14Flo can carry on installing the posts
25:17for the picket fence
25:18let me do that
25:20I'll do the heavy bit
25:21now already you can see
25:23that delineation between
25:24this part of the garden
25:26and the rest of the garden
25:27is taking shape
25:29water
25:30Tori and Fleur are using
25:32quick setting concrete
25:33which hardens in about five minutes
25:35with all your timber cut up
25:37and all your dimensions
25:38you could do this job
25:40in an afternoon I think
25:41and really create something special
25:44in the garden
25:44and that white is going to be picked up
25:47not only in the fence
25:48and the gate
25:49but in the arbor as well
25:50and in the planting
25:51so the whole thing's going to
25:52tie together
25:53I think Joe's done really well
25:55with this design
25:57thank you
25:59whilst Blo focuses on the romantic part
26:02of the garden
26:03Joe's in the more practical patch
26:05yeah I'm quite excited about this area
26:07this is the
26:09the sort of potager
26:11vegetable edible area
26:13some herbs
26:14a bit of a mishmash
26:15we're going to give them
26:16some starters
26:17so
26:18you know
26:19some structural plants
26:20like these
26:21white currants
26:22and then things like this
26:24which is lettuce
26:26just to get them going
26:27for the year
26:28and the idea is
26:29it changes
26:30every year
26:31you know
26:31you sow some plants
26:32you grow some plants
26:34you eat some plants
26:35you replenish them all
26:36I think the kids
26:37are just going to love it
26:38come out of the back door
26:39pick some stuff
26:40eat it
26:41get involved in the garden
26:43you know
26:43it's fantastic
26:47as well as food
26:48to get the kids
26:49imagination going
26:50Joe's designed
26:52a destination
26:52at the end
26:53for storytelling
26:54something that caught
26:56Rick and Sasha's attention
26:57for me
26:58I'm really excited
27:00to see what's at the end
27:00of the garden
27:02when Joe said
27:03a garden
27:04should have somewhere
27:05to get to
27:07that's something
27:08I've never heard before
27:09Dan is busy
27:10making the benches
27:11for it
27:12we've got regular sleepers
27:13that you can buy
27:13at most builders merchants
27:14these ones
27:15are just as they come
27:17just sort of like
27:18graded
27:19you can buy
27:21beautiful
27:22planed and finished
27:23sleepers
27:23they cost about
27:24twice as much
27:24as this
27:25but we can make
27:26these ones look
27:27as nice as the expensive ones
27:28just by powerplaning them
27:30and sanding them
27:30and then it takes
27:32all of the splintery bits
27:33off of them
27:33and just gives it
27:34a really nice feel
27:35to perch on
27:36at the bottom of the garden
27:37it'll be lovely
27:39with a finished sleeper
27:40around 25 pounds
27:42more expensive a piece
27:43planing and sanding
27:44it yourself
27:45can be very cost effective
27:48by a simple pass
27:50with the plane
27:50and the sand
27:51it's transformed
27:52into a lovely looking finish
27:55halfway through
27:56and the team
27:56are making good progress
27:59the upright panels
28:00are going up
28:01on the fence
28:03the gravel path
28:04is down
28:04here we go
28:05let's lift
28:06and the ready built
28:07arbor
28:08is lifted into place
28:09to me
28:10to me
28:10to you
28:11to you
28:11you alright
28:12yeah yeah
28:12I'm glad there's a path here
28:13at around 230 pounds
28:16it's an efficient way
28:17to add seating
28:18and interest
28:19eventually being enveloped
28:21in climbers
28:22oh
28:23just
28:27so this is exciting
28:29the first plant
28:30that's going into the garden
28:31and it's an apple tree
28:32this is apple fuji
28:34and fuji
28:35is sweet
28:36crisp
28:37slightly honey
28:38flavoured apple
28:40and it's going to
28:41sort of set the tone
28:42for the edible garden
28:43so I'm just going to
28:45check the depth
28:47so that when
28:49this is planted
28:50it's the same depth
28:52that it is
28:52in the pot
28:53that it's in
28:54so that's going to
28:54work nicely
28:57and let's see
28:58what we've got
28:58as far as roots
28:59are concerned
29:00we've got these
29:01feeding roots
29:02I might just
29:04tease them out
29:04very gently
29:05if they're really
29:07pot bound
29:07you want to tease them out
29:08and I'm going to
29:09mix some of the compost
29:12in with the soil
29:14that I'm going to
29:14back fill with
29:17and then
29:18just dragging it over
29:19back filling it
29:21just I'm going to
29:22lightly tread
29:25and there you go
29:27first plant in the garden
29:28really satisfying
29:30what a lovely apple tree
29:38continuing with the trees
29:39Joe's planting a
29:41four metre high birch
29:42to add privacy
29:44oh yeah
29:45can you stay there
29:46and I'll do the old
29:47I see myself as a
29:49conductor
29:50it's tall isn't it
29:51yeah because I'm
29:52six foot eight
29:55yeah
29:55that's lovely
29:57with Flo adding
29:58the final bits of white
30:00to the picket fence
30:02yes
30:03et voila
30:05the transformation
30:06is coming together
30:08Kyle's compacting
30:10nearly two tonnes
30:11of self-binding gravel
30:12to complete the path
30:13and Joe's packing
30:15his patch
30:16full of produce
30:19all right I think
30:20a couple more
30:21of these strawberries
30:22over here
30:23would be great
30:25now this is
30:26the potager area
30:27I'm really excited
30:29about this
30:29so I've got to say
30:30basically the potager
30:31is all edibles
30:32pretty much mixed together
30:34there's some sweet corn
30:35in here
30:35thyme
30:36sage
30:37coriander
30:38and then there's
30:39the apple tree of course
30:40the soil's already good
30:41in this area
30:42which is crucial really
30:44for these vegetables
30:44and also it gets
30:45plenty of sun
30:46and that's key as well
30:48but I'm planting
30:48some of these
30:49summer fruiting raspberries
30:51you don't have to get
30:52obsessed with pruning regimes
30:54they will flower
30:55and fruit anyway
30:56but you will get more
30:57if you prune properly
30:58and the key is
30:59just give them
31:00loads of compost
31:01when they start
31:02because they do like
31:03a bit of moisture
31:03at the roots
31:04and then when they
31:05start producing fruit
31:06just start picking them
31:08it's really that simple
31:12never plant these
31:13too shallowly
31:14if anything
31:15a little bit deeper
31:16because they will
31:16produce from the roots
31:18and I'm spacing them
31:19about I don't know
31:20what's that
31:20about 50-60 centimetres
31:22couple of feet apart
31:23also they'll get to
31:24about 6 feet high
31:25so they will need
31:26staking but they're
31:27going to create
31:27a nice little hedge
31:28at the front of the
31:29garden here
31:30so screen off the
31:31house from the garden
31:32a little bit
31:33but you can't go wrong
31:34really with raspberries
31:35they are tough
31:36hardy plants
31:38and like I say
31:39they will produce fruit
31:40pretty much whatever
31:41you do to them
31:47as Jo continues in the potager
31:50flows romancing the arbor area
31:53so this viburnum kilimanjaro
31:56is looking stunning
31:58in this garden
31:58and in full flower now
32:00and it's one of the
32:01early flowering viburnums
32:02and it's just that sort of
32:04burst of summers here
32:06look at that beautiful habit
32:07it's like a wedding cake
32:09tiered and actually
32:10quite a light canopy
32:12so you can see through it
32:13in this part of the garden
32:15what it does
32:15it ties together
32:17that whole theme
32:18of the romance
32:20the white picks up
32:21the picket fence
32:22it picks up
32:22the arbor seat
32:24and just sits here
32:26and gives this whole space
32:28quite a big presence
32:30and an identity
32:31I love it
32:32viburnums are great
32:34it's a family
32:34of so many different varieties
32:37that are evergreen
32:39or deciduous
32:40really easy to grow
32:42as well
32:43so we'll grow
32:44in any aspects
32:46whether it's sun
32:47part shade
32:47or shade
32:48and this particular
32:49kilimanjaro
32:50I think is a stunner
32:52and I'm sure
32:54Sasha and Rick
32:55are going to be
32:55blown away
33:07well there's lots
33:08of real glamour queens
33:10in this garden
33:11there's roses
33:12we've got the beautiful
33:12viburnum over there
33:14but you also need
33:14plants that are going to
33:15play a supporting role
33:17and this plant
33:18I put in pretty much
33:19every garden
33:20this is Mexican fleabane
33:22Erigeron carvinscianus
33:24and well it's doing
33:26its thing right now
33:26look at it
33:27lovely pretty
33:28daisy flowers
33:29it's perfect for
33:30just breaking up
33:31the edge of paving
33:32or you know
33:33at the bottom of a wall
33:34and it'll just seed around
33:35and if you go to
33:36the west country
33:37Cornwall
33:38Devon
33:39Dorset
33:39you'll see it
33:40in the walls there
33:42in the hedgerows there
33:43just seeded around
33:44perfectly happy
33:45and this one's going
33:46in right here
33:53beautiful
33:54oh my knees
33:55crunch
33:56crunch
34:06right so
34:07into place
34:08back over at the arbor
34:10Flo's reusing
34:11old chimney pots
34:12to add height
34:13and fragrance
34:14just about here
34:16yeah
34:18oh my gosh
34:19the smell is amazing
34:21now everyone
34:21should have some mint
34:22in their garden
34:23it's really easy
34:24to grow
34:25but it's best
34:26to put it in a pot
34:27because in open ground
34:29can get a bit vigorous
34:31and a bit invasive
34:32now mint
34:33is a thirsty plant
34:35so you have to be
34:36watering it regularly
34:37for it to stay good
34:39look good
34:39and mint
34:40and mint
34:40and mint is wonderful
34:41as you know
34:42a medicinal plant
34:44great in tea
34:45great in cocktails
34:47great in salads
34:48pot it up
34:49and then
34:54pop it in there
34:55like so
34:56and it's already
34:57taking up space
34:58in this beautiful pot
35:00what a place
35:01to perform in
35:07the finish line
35:08is almost in sight
35:10with the bench
35:11in place
35:12and final few tweaks
35:14Flo and Jo
35:16can call it a day
35:19oh
35:20thank you
35:21feels good to sit down
35:23doesn't it
35:23I'm exhausted
35:25Chloe
35:26welcome to Garden Rescue
35:27yeah well
35:28at my age
35:29you know
35:30at your age
35:32it looks good though
35:33it looks really great
35:35our picket fence
35:36is a winner
35:38it transforms the garden
35:40but it also you know
35:41offsets everything
35:42on either side of it
35:43and the idea is
35:44the dog will be
35:45in one area or the other
35:46or might just leap right
35:47over the top of it
35:48who knows
35:48but yeah it feels like
35:50you know you do
35:50go through the gate
35:51and you enter a slightly
35:53different private world
35:54which is lovely
35:55yeah
35:55it's definitely two rooms
35:57isn't it
35:57yeah
35:58this Robin's been around
35:59all day
35:59this Robin
36:00it's a good luck
36:02Robin
36:03oh
36:04bells ringing
36:05the bell tolls
36:05time to get him out
36:06yeah
36:07yeah I'm gonna go
36:08and get him out
36:08see what I think
36:13Sasha and Rick's garden
36:14was unsafe
36:15and uninspiring
36:16for children
36:17with uneven steps
36:19a mound of bare earth
36:20and a path
36:21to an old pond
36:26but with their
36:27£4,000 budget
36:29this English country
36:31oasis
36:32is now somewhere
36:33for little legs
36:34and minds
36:35to explore
36:37with a vegetable patch
36:38new entertaining area
36:40and lawn
36:41and seated hideaway
36:43at the bottom
36:47one more step down
36:48to the left
36:49okay
36:49yeah one more step down
36:51to the left
36:56so would you like to
36:57open your eyes
36:58and have a look
37:00oh my goodness
37:02wow
37:03wow
37:03it's amazing
37:05I feel like I've been
37:06transported somewhere else
37:08not in our garden
37:09oh my goodness
37:10it is amazing
37:12wow
37:13absolutely amazing
37:14this is perfect
37:14the fence is incredible
37:16it feels wider as well
37:18like it feels bigger
37:19they're right
37:20it is bigger
37:20it does feel bigger
37:21particularly this side
37:22because it's just
37:23really open now
37:24before Sasha and Rick
37:27had nowhere to entertain
37:28with debris covering
37:30a small paved area
37:32rendered unusable
37:35now they have the space
37:37to barbecue and dine
37:39the old herringbone brickwork
37:42has been uncovered
37:43and refurbished
37:44and it's been extended
37:46using Rick and Sasha's
37:48existing slabs
37:49the steps have also been levelled
37:52to make access
37:53child friendly
37:54we've reconditioned a bit
37:56your herringbone
37:57but you know
37:57it's nice to keep
37:58something original
37:59yeah
37:59adds to the character
38:00it's much more practical
38:02and generous
38:02yeah
38:03so hopefully
38:04you know
38:04you'll spend quite a bit
38:05of time out here
38:06yeah definitely
38:07and even just like Nelly
38:08and when it gets that muddy
38:10at least she's not
38:10bringing in all that mud
38:12in the house
38:12because we've got the fence
38:13to just corner her off
38:14oh yeah
38:15the picket fence
38:16and the gate
38:17just means that
38:18Nelly can stay this side
38:20and just have
38:21their own space
38:23before
38:24a higgledy-piggledy wall
38:26kept back a mound of earth
38:29now
38:30Joe's created a vegetable patch
38:33teeming with produce
38:34which will provide food
38:35and education
38:37for the family
38:39so this is sort of
38:40the veggie area
38:40through here
38:41what have we got here
38:42we've got some raspberries
38:43you've got some
38:45red currants
38:46you've just got some
38:47salad leaves through
38:48it's nothing to get
38:49freaked out about
38:49it's really simple gardening
38:51yeah
38:51all edible stuff
38:53and some of it
38:53you'll have to replenish
38:54every year
38:55yeah
38:55but some of it
38:56like the raspberries
38:57I mean
38:58you know
38:58you just have to
38:59prune them back
38:59really
38:59and then eat the raspberries
39:01just enjoy it
39:01and just come and pick them
39:02and sit there
39:03and you know
39:04amazing
39:04eat away
39:05you know
39:06absolutely amazing
39:07yeah
39:07and the apple tree
39:08is nice there
39:09it will just hold
39:10that space
39:11nicely
39:12yeah
39:12so we should go
39:13through the magic
39:14garden gate
39:14yeah
39:15let's do it
39:16it's not real
39:16it's all just
39:17it's just an image
39:18it doesn't actually exist
39:23what once was a long
39:25boring part of the garden
39:27lacking identity
39:28and plants
39:31now
39:32is a white picket fence
39:34providing a gateway
39:35to a romantic escape
39:36with swathes
39:38of pretty plants
39:39to attract wildlife
39:41a tall birch
39:42now provides privacy
39:45and Joe's pruned bay tree
39:47stands proud
39:49they can overlook
39:50their oval lawn
39:51perfect for picnicking
39:53from their cute
39:54little love seat
39:55oh this is so
39:57perfect
39:58wow
39:59so sturdy
40:00as well
40:01it works well
40:02because you
40:02I mean
40:02normally I wouldn't
40:03divide a garden up
40:04but actually
40:04you do feel like
40:05you're entering
40:05a different way
40:06so come on then
40:07you've got to sit down
40:08wow
40:08this is amazing
40:09I love this
40:10try sitting down
40:11try relaxing
40:12I love the cushion
40:13as well
40:13wow
40:14yeah I love this
40:15this is beautiful
40:16this is amazing
40:17I love it matching
40:18with the fence as well
40:19but it gives you
40:20a nice perspective
40:20on the garden
40:21from there as well
40:22and I thought with the kids
40:23if they're playing on the lawn
40:24it's just somewhere
40:25to observe them
40:25or to sit and read stories
40:27oh my goodness
40:28and that lawn's just
40:29the perfect size
40:30for picnics
40:31and kids just to play on
40:33yeah the kids are going
40:33to love it
40:34it is a garden
40:35for kids to just like
40:37explore and just
40:39develop in it
40:40right come on
40:41get up you two
40:41you can't sit there all day
40:42so there's another
40:44there's another spot
40:44down the bottom here
40:45so yeah this is a really
40:46sociable space
40:47because you've got
40:48two benches
40:49opposite each other
40:49yeah
40:50I thought maybe
40:50sort of a bit of
40:51storytelling down here
40:53you know for the kids
40:54and as they grow up
40:55a little private space
40:57for them to
40:58not hide in
40:59but just to get away
41:01from you two
41:01yeah yeah
41:02you know but feeling
41:03safe in the garden
41:04as well

41:08and this is where
41:09the most sun gets
41:11doesn't it
41:12this is the last bit
41:13of the sun usually
41:13yeah it just makes you
41:14want to have friends
