00:22From inside Tropicana Field here in Tampa Bay,
00:25the show brings you a matchup of division rivals.
00:28It's the Toronto Blue Jays taking on the Tampa Bay Rays.
00:34And we'll be back with the first pitch right after this.
00:42And starting on the mound for the Rays, Steven Matz.
00:45Chris, how about a scouting report?
00:47No, last time out, he's only able to complete four innings,
00:50but really battled, didn't have his best stuff.
00:52I look for him to be better in this one.
00:56Okay, all set to go, and the batter is George Springer.
01:05And we're off for the rolling in Tampa Bay.
01:09First pitch, 640.
01:16Line drive, base hit.
01:20So a man on base to start the inning.
01:25Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way.
01:28Didn't get jumpy, didn't try to pull the ball.
01:30He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing
01:35for the line drive, base hit.
01:38Blatty, a former Gold Glove winner, a member of the 1,000-hit club,
01:43and he's a former home run derby champ.
01:45Up the middle, Wolves.
01:47Toss the second, and two!
01:49What a play!
01:51He's so good at coming across the bag and snagging it with the bare hand to throw.
01:56I like the flair that he brings day in and day out.
02:00Now it's the Toronto-designated hitter, Davis Schneider.
02:06At the bring in, it just misses.
02:15Bounce to the right, Williams.
02:19Slings to first, and the inning is over.
02:22Now it's the Rays' turn, no score.
02:24Major League Baseball is on the show.
02:32Back now at the chop for the bottom of the first.
02:34And starting in this one, Dylan Cease.
02:37Chris, his strikeout rate this year among the best all time.
02:42He's truly one of the elite strikeout pitchers in the league.
02:45I mean, strikeouts per nine off the charts.
02:48The opposing team, they know they have their work cut out for them
02:51any time they're facing this guy or a guy like this that's going to get the swings and misses.
02:54Pretty much in a class of his own when it comes to that category.
02:58That pitch gets the inside corner.
03:00Strike one.
03:07Ball.
03:17Swing and a miss and he was fooled.
03:25got him swinging
03:29batting second all right let's take a look at the Rays lineup one guy swinging a hot bat recently
03:35Cedric Mullins and Boog he brings a big bat to this lineup he's on pace to hit more than 40
03:41home
03:41runs this year and that's a guy where if it's more than a couple of games without a dinger
03:46guys are wondering what's going on you're so used to seeing him around the bases you put a guy like
03:51this in the middle lineup and just put it on autopilot big time hitter always a ton of fun to
03:56watch
04:13hit in the air out towards left center field pretty well struck
04:17stretches out it holds it in gotta love the over the shoulder catch to tell you what those are
04:22really fun to make jr camonero the next to hit
04:34that clips the corner and this guy's got a great feel for his breaking ball today
04:45right through there for a strike quickly into an 0-2 count both pitches were down in the zone I
04:51think
04:51you set your sights a little bit higher because you'll have a tendency to chase if you look down
04:56in that area and down on strikes raise retired in order scoreless after one
05:04I like the lead just to flow when you drop it hold your hands up when you're with it
05:10on now to the top half of inning number two and now for the Jays Dalton Varshow
05:19base stock center field man aboard on the leadoff single
05:26batting fifth third baseman kazuma okamoto
05:36breaking ball inside and it's one to know
05:49this one in the air center field
05:53and there's one down
05:59batting sixth second baseman ernie clement
06:04one out man at first ernie clement now at the plate definitely scuffling at the dish lately
06:11just one hit in his last five games and takes low for ball one
06:19that one almost got him last two pitches have been down in the zone pitcher clearly trying to get that
06:25ground ball double play but in this count you're gonna have to give in elevate his pitches and get
06:30back into this at bat
06:37curve in the dirt kicks away
06:42Varshow into scoring position on the wild pitch
06:45and there goes the double play possibility really good read by the runner there
06:49his secondary lead he anticipates the trajectory going down and gets a really
06:54nice jump off to second base now he's in scoring position he's taking away the
06:58double play opportunity this ball's chopped on the ground base hit and they strike first as they take a 1
07:05-0 lead
07:07mission accomplished there as he picks up the rbi to give him the lead really nice job staying up the
07:13middle with his approach he didn't try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield
07:20inside ball one
07:22man at first one away
07:25out to short
07:27out to short and a base hit right there
07:30quick throw back in
07:31lead runner holds it second with one gone
07:34two consecutive base hits for this team not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the
07:39other way and put the ball and play it's a team at bat right there
07:42nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep
07:45nice draw in the box now take strike one
07:52and that's through there for a strike 0-2
08:02one
08:02fights it off you'll see another
08:09and it's fouled off they'll do it again
08:14traffic on the bases with one already in here the second game of the series
08:26three
08:26sends him down looking
08:27so you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position and two strikes just
08:33put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance
08:36very frustrating for him I'm sure
08:38see if the next guy can pick him up
08:43two on two outs
08:46tough spot right here a couple runners on two ball count you can't nibble but you have to execute and
08:53finish your pitch if you leave something out over the plate it's going to bring in some runs
09:02but you want
09:04that's a strike getting inches closer to getting out of the jam
09:08Heineman not happy about that called strike here's the challenge
09:12so the call will stand so they'll lose their first challenge
09:20and it remains two and two
09:33nice grab
09:34and they get the out
09:48bottom half of inning number two and stepping in for the raise
09:52is Cedric Mullins
10:07foul ball there
10:20The 1-1.
10:23Fastball for a strike.
10:35Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt.
10:37In time to get him.
10:39One away in the strikeout.
10:41Usually when you see several pitches,
10:43you're going to get at least one that you might be able to do something with.
10:46But they didn't exactly challenge him in any way right there.
10:49And really, they just used his aggressiveness against him.
10:52I don't think he even got a pitch in the zone.
10:54No, that's a good point, Ziggy.
10:55He goes down on strikes, but not a single pitch was actually in the strike zone.
11:04Ball.
11:17Outside.
11:18Ball two.
11:24And that one fouled off.
11:38Pitch misses.
11:39Ball three.
11:463-1.
11:47And he couldn't come up with it.
11:48Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot.
11:51Hitter didn't offer at it.
11:53Now he has somebody to worry about over at first.
11:56One down.
11:57Carson Williams will hit next.
11:59It's been a tough stretch for him at the plate.
12:02Only two hits over the last five games.
12:19And a swing and a miss there.
12:300-2 fastball way out of the zone.
12:33I think he's trying to speed him up.
12:35Got to stay back.
12:36Off speed's probably coming.
12:44Slider sports away.
12:47No advance, though.
12:57On the ground right side.
12:59And that's just fouled.
13:12This one belted.
13:13Deep left field.
13:15On its way.
13:16Gone.
13:21He'll touch them all.
13:23And they jump ahead in the second.
13:26It's 2-1.
13:32Let's go.
13:36A good hitter gets pitch recognition early.
13:39He saw exactly where that was going to be.
13:41The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing.
13:45He stayed on it and got all of it.
13:56In there for a strike at the top of the zone.
14:08Tap foul at the plate.
14:21Swing and a miss.
14:22And he chases that one in the dirt.
14:24Out on the drop.
14:25Third strike.
14:26Two gone.
14:27Well, obviously, that was nowhere near the strike zone.
14:30By the time it got to the plate, people at home watching are thinking,
14:33what's he swinging at?
14:34But I'll tell you, some of the break guys snap off these days is just devastating.
14:37It can be so tough to recognize where a pitch like that's going to end up.
14:41Two down bases empty.
14:43Chandler Simpson next to hit for the Rays.
14:47Inside corner.
14:49That's a strike.
14:50It's 0-1.
14:58Ball one there.
15:00Chris, he's currently the team leader in stolen bases.
15:07Gets the call.
15:08That is strike two.
15:12Bases empty.
15:13Two away.
15:14But two runs are in at bottom half of inning number two.
15:18Way inside.
15:35And a payoff pitch.
15:38Towards first, Guerrero.
15:41He takes it himself to the bag, and that'll do it.
15:45The Rays with a two-run homer.
15:47And this is now a 2-1 ball game.
15:50It's an AL East back shove here on MLB The Show.
15:57Back here in Tampa Bay.
15:59Now here's the leadoff man for the Blue Jays, George Springer.
16:05Sharp ground there.
16:06That's through for a base hit.
16:09And the tying run is on base.
16:12Waste no time there.
16:14I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield.
16:18That's not one you're excited to get in front of if you're an infielder.
16:21You know they used to say, charge it.
16:23Crazy.
16:25Knee high.
16:25That's in for a strike.
16:41So now it's all about protect mode.
16:43Try to shorten up.
16:44Try to track the ball.
16:45Block it if you have to, as far as just a late swing that maybe you're not sure about.
16:49But some way, somehow, climb back into this at bat through the count.
17:02And he'll do.
17:05Chopped left side.
17:07And it's just fouled.
17:09That was close.
17:15Line drive.
17:16That's a base hit.
17:18Runner holds up at second.
17:20Two aboard now.
17:21Now, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high leverage spot right there.
17:26Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line.
17:29You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite
17:33field.
17:34And it doesn't always translate into the game.
17:36But right there, it did.
17:37And he did it perfectly.
17:38In the dirt.
17:39And an excellent job keeping it right there.
17:42First and second.
17:43No outs.
17:44We're here in the top half of inning number three.
17:47Close, but called a ball.
17:49Ball two.
17:54A sliding stop.
17:56And that's a great play for the out.
17:59Balboog is an infielder.
18:00You have to be ready for anything.
18:01In that spot, it required going to the ground, getting a little dirty, and making a strong
18:06throw for the out.
18:07Great play.
18:08Digging in, Dalton Varshow.
18:11One for one with a single and a run scored so far.
18:15In there at the knees.
18:18Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count.
18:20He's going to have to continue finishing off this hitter.
18:23Ranking ball in there for a strike.
18:26Big pitch right here.
18:27He's going to try to make a pitch.
18:28It's going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play.
18:32Worm burner into the outfield for a knock.
18:35Springer comes in to score.
18:37It's an RBI single.
18:39We are tied at two.
18:41A swing like that can help you come out of the struggle.
18:44We saw the numbers coming into the ball game.
18:47But all he's trying to do at this point is help his team win.
18:51And it's 0-1.
18:58That breaking ball drops in for a strike.
19:010-2 count.
19:02Both pitches on the inside part of the play.
19:04Hitter is thinking, I don't want to get beat here.
19:06This is a good time for something off-speed away.
19:10Ground ball could be two.
19:12The turn by Williams in second.
19:14And they bounce into two already.
19:17This one ends the third.
19:18But the RBI single pushes across a run.
19:212-2 game.
19:22It's an AL East matchup here on MLB The Show.
19:28Bottom of the inning.
19:30And stepping in for the raise.
19:31Taylor Walls.
19:32Good stop, Taylor Walls.
19:41That finds the mark on the inside corner.
19:52Next offering is foul back.
20:00Deal two.
20:14Stays alive.
20:35This one in the air center field.
20:39And there's one down.
20:45Up next for the raise, first baseman, Yandy Diaz.
20:58Off the plate, ball one.
21:02Tied up here in the early going.
21:08In the air, right field.
21:12Takes it in for the out.
21:15Up next for the raise, left fielder, Richie Palacios.
21:20Richie Palacios getting ready to hit.
21:23Fly to left his first time.
21:27Slider in there for a strike.
21:45Well, this is the type of hitter you want up in this situation.
21:48Some sluggers coming up behind him.
21:50He's so good at moving runners, but also getting on base.
21:53See if he can be patient here.
21:54Now he breaks his bat.
21:57Play made.
21:58That ends the inning.
22:06And after three, it remains a 2-2 time.
22:15Back here at the ballpark, let's check out the latest news from around the league.
22:19Bernie Clement.
22:30Well, these Blue Jays showing great discipline at the plate.
22:33And patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one.
22:37They're doing a good job of working the pitch count.
22:39And they've been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well.
22:47Ball two.
22:48Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board,
22:52the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set them up to do more damage later in this game.
22:57That misses the zone.
22:58Three and one.
23:06Line to second.
23:08Stagged on the bounce.
23:10Lead off hitter retired in the fourth.
23:12Up next for the Blue Jays, shortstop, Andres Jimenez.
23:34All tied up.
23:35Top half of inning number four.
23:52Up the middle, Williams.
23:54On to first.
23:55No, he's down.
23:56Great pick.
23:57They get out number two in a tough play.
24:00Really nice play there at second.
24:01He knew he had to get rid of it in a hurry.
24:03And that's a play that's probably practiced thousands of times from growing up to batting practice
24:08and into these big league ball games.
24:10Really good job.
24:12Now with the plate, Myles Straw.
24:15And that one pulled foul.
24:21Two down, nobody on.
24:25And that skips in the dirt.
24:32Ball two.
24:40Got the bat going too soon.
24:42It's strike two.
24:43Two strikes to a guy who's already 0 for 1 with the punch out.
24:46The only guy in the lineup with that strike out.
24:49But you can't get too relaxed.
24:50You've still got to make good pitches to get him out.
24:52And he hits a ground ball right side.
24:54He takes it himself to the bag.
24:56And that'll do it.
24:57On to the bottom of the fourth.
24:59This game's tied 2-2.
25:04Bottom four and stepping in for the Rays.
25:06Junior Caminero.
25:07Third baseman.
25:09Junior Caminero.
25:14Fastball for a strike.
25:15Well, these Rays do a great job, Boog, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way.
25:20And I'm seeing very patient advance out of them.
25:23They're doing a good job of working the pitch count.
25:25And they've been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well.
25:37Here's the 0-2.
25:40Swings through that one.
25:41It's a strikeout.
25:42Up next for the Rays.
25:44Center fielder, Cedric Mullins.
25:47And here's a look at how he's using his pitches in this one.
26:02Tried to backdoor him with that slider right there, but just missed off the plate.
26:06Good pitch, though.
26:14Chases that one upstairs.
26:16Spin rate's outstanding on that high fastball.
26:19Really tough to hit.
26:22Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on playing with.
26:26You're better off taking that pitch.
26:32Right through there for a strike.
26:34So they forced the starter to put in a lot of work.
26:36And they've been able to get to him for some runs.
26:38And hopefully that bullpen phone is working today.
26:43Strike three, and that's two in a row.
26:45No, just couldn't pull the trigger on the fastball right there.
26:48And I don't think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything.
26:52I just think he was flat out frozen.
26:54Did not expect that location, in my opinion.
27:02Fraley, in the box for the second time.
27:04One ball, no strikes.
27:11And that one is lifted in the air.
27:13Varsho settles underneath it.
27:15And that is that.
27:19Nothing doing for the offense that time.
27:22On to the top of the fifth we go.
27:23We are tied.
27:252-2.
27:27Back here at Tropicana Field.
27:29And now for the Jays.
27:30Tyler Heinemann.
27:36Well, these Jays doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game.
27:41And the numbers back that up.
27:42One thing that really stands out to me is how they've only struck out one time.
27:46That's good discipline right there.
27:48And on top of it, they're producing more than a hit per inning.
27:53Flares it into the outfield.
27:55One down.
28:00Let's take a look at his pitch usage in this one, Ziggy.
28:03The sinker's his bread and butter pitch, Boog.
28:06And he's gone to it plenty in this one.
28:08He's used it on more than half his pitches so far.
28:11And he's mostly held them in check.
28:13We'll see if they can break through over the next couple of innings.
28:16Rolled softly, but that goes foul.
28:22And now the 0-1.
28:26Rips that one to right.
28:28Fraley takes it in for the out.
28:31Two away.
28:32As good as he's seeing the ball out of the pitcher's hand,
28:35you cannot hang a breaking ball right there.
28:37Lucky it's staying in the ballpark.
28:39First baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
28:42Vladimir stands in now and watches strike one.
28:46Two down, nobody on.
28:48And we're at the top of the fifth.
28:50No, that's low.
28:54Vladdy recently taking home player of the month honors.
29:00Ripped, but a curls foul.
29:04Clearly hoping he could get a swing and miss on that,
29:06but doesn't pull the hitter with that breaking ball.
29:09Nice job.
29:10Just couldn't keep it fair.
29:17Two down, nobody on.
29:20And they'll do it again.
29:27One, two down.
29:31Swing and a miss.
29:32That one in the dirt.
29:34That completes the strikeout, inning over.
29:41We've hit the halfway point.
29:43Tied, two and two.
29:49Back now in Tampa Bay, and stepping in for the Rays, Carson Williams.
29:54Carson Williams.
29:59Well, these Rays just lacking discipline at the plate in this ballgame.
30:03Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story.
30:06We've seen it quite a bit today.
30:07It's been tough for them to make contact at times,
30:09and it just doesn't look like they're seeing it very well as a group.
30:20Out of the left center for a line drive, base hit.
30:23And they have their first baserunner since the second inning.
30:30Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn't spin off of it.
30:34That's the key.
30:34You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that.
30:42Rudder takes off.
30:44Pitch in for a strike.
30:46For the second inning, seven.
30:48And the go-ahead run is now in scored position.
30:58The 0-1.
31:00Way out front for strike two.
31:03And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything,
31:05you feel no need to challenge inside the zone.
31:08You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond,
31:12and they just keep eating right out of your hand.
31:15Catch your challenge.
31:16We'll take another look.
31:18And that just scraped the zone.
31:20The call is overturned.
31:22So they get to hang on to their second challenge.
31:25Go ahead, run on base.
31:27Chandler Simpson.
31:29Next to hit for the Rays.
31:30Grounded out his first time up.
31:36And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter.
31:46Man at second.
31:48A little out front there as he swings through it.
31:51Toronto's bullpen with some action.
31:53Number 62.
31:54The rookie right-hander is getting loose.
31:57Little.
31:57A left-hander.
31:58Also throwing.
32:05That's smacked on a line to center.
32:07He's got it.
32:08Grounded tags at second.
32:11And now a wide throw to third.
32:14Up next for the Rays, shortstop Taylor Walls.
32:27That one's upstairs.
32:29Ball one.
32:30Two down.
32:31Go ahead, run.
32:32It's scoring position.
32:39And another ball.
32:41Love how this guy grinds out at bats.
32:43I mean, he's down there at the bottom of the lineup in the nine hole.
32:45But he's worked himself in a really good hitter's count.
32:48Trying to pick up a two-out RBI.
33:03On the ground, the first.
33:05He takes it himself to the bag, and that'll do it.
33:09One left for Tampa.
33:11Three or five.
33:12All even at 2-2.
33:16Back here in a close one.
33:18And a look now at some of the biggest plays from the game.
33:47Leading off, Davis Schneider.
33:49Blue Jays, the designated hitter, Davis Schneider.
34:02Oh, great stop.
34:04Fires to first.
34:05And very nicely done for the out.
34:08Oh, he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air.
34:11Let's the defense work behind him with another ground ball.
34:14Good execution.
34:17On the ground, right side.
34:20Over to Diaz.
34:22Two quick outs to open the top of the six.
34:24For the Blue Jays' third baseman, Kazuma Okamoto.
34:28So up next.
34:38Kazuma Okamoto.
34:39He's been a great free agent side.
34:44Hit on the ground to short.
34:46Walls.
34:47To first.
34:48They don't come any quicker.
34:50Three pitches for three outs.
34:52Inning over.
34:53One, two, three.
34:54Go.
34:54The Blue Jays.
34:55Score remains.
34:56Two, two.
35:01Back down for the bottom of the six.
35:03And there's a new pitcher on the mound.
35:05Number 62.
35:09And leading off for the Rays, first baseman, Yandy Diaz.
35:20In for a strike.
35:21Good slider.
35:22Movement in the Blue Jays' bullpen.
35:24Tyler Rogers.
35:25The right-handed sinker baller.
35:27He looks to be readying himself.
35:29Hoffman warming up as well.
35:32And there's a foul ball.
35:56Swings through it, and that's a strikeout.
35:59That slider down and away, it's just kind of a slow depth.
36:02With two strikes, you're looking to protect, and halfway to the plate,
36:05you know you've committed, and you know you're going to have no.
36:17Jansen touching it.
36:18Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap.
36:25Flares it into the outfield.
36:29But it's off his glove.
36:30So they get a man aboard with a one-out single.
36:33Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle.
36:36A lot of hitters tell themselves, line drive over the infielder's hand.
36:39That's what I'm trying to do.
36:40Just keep that approach simple.
36:41And right there, it was perfectly executed.
36:44On time with everything, and pulled it into the gap nicely.
36:48Caminero, batting with one down, takes a strike.
37:110-2 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb
37:17back into this at bat.
37:24Hacks and misses.
37:25It's a strikeout.
37:27Oh, tough night at the dish.
37:28Punching out for the third time right there.
37:30He just hasn't looked very comfortable at the plate.
37:33A little unsure of his timing right now.
37:35Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches.
37:38He'll have some adjustments to make.
37:56No question about this one.
37:58It's out of here.
38:06Cedric Mullen sends it out.
38:08His ninth homer of the year.
38:10And they slide in front in the sixth.
38:13It's 4-2.
38:15The one thing the pitcher didn't want to happen just happened.
38:19That's not an easy one to stomach.
38:23A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics.
38:29If you fly open with the front shoulder, there's no way you keep that ball fair.
38:32An outstanding job mechanically.
38:35He deserves that homerun.
38:36So two down.
38:38Now up for Tampa Bay.
38:39Jake Fraley.
38:40He's 0-4-1.
38:41I hate.
38:53Deal one.
38:57Dides and he can't hang on.
39:00Back-to-back hits.
39:02And they were hit hard.
39:09Now it's the second baseman.
39:11Carson Williams.
39:12And he's already left his mark on this game.
39:15He certainly has, Boog.
39:16A two-run shot in the second inning.
39:18And that made an early impact on this game in a big way.
39:37Right through there for a strike.
39:42Two runs across in the inning.
39:44Here in the bottom of the sixth.
39:46Quick move to first.
39:48And he dives back in safely.
39:59No.
40:10Ball back outside.
40:19Swing and a miss struck him out.
40:23The Rays with a two-run homer.
40:26It's now 4-2.
40:28It's an AL East matchup here on MLB The Show.
40:35Now pitching for the Rays.
40:36Welcome back.
40:37We're in the seventh.
40:37We have a new pitcher on the mound.
40:39Joe Boyle.
40:40Power slider guy, bro.
40:42He throws it hard and gets a lot of late movement.
40:45So it's tough to pick up.
40:46Toronto, second baseman, Ernie Clement.
40:49On the outside corner.
40:51Strike one.
40:51So important to get ahead of these hitters.
40:53You don't want to issue a free pass and allow that tying run to come to the plate.
40:57Always want to keep that other team in a position where if they're going to beat you,
41:00they're going to have to do it with multiple hits.
41:10Now a drag ball third base side and it goes just foul.
41:17That's in for a strike, a slider.
41:20Two really good back-to-back sliders now in an 0-2 count.
41:23He's feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off.
41:26He can go anywhere he wants.
41:32On the ground right side.
41:34And he takes it himself for the out.
41:36That play won't be trending on social media later on,
41:39but it's still important to execute it to perfection.
41:42This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner.
41:47Straw in now.
41:48Takes ball one off the plate.
41:54Boyle, 26 years old.
41:56And he was a fifth-round pick in 2020.
42:00To third.
42:01And it stays fair.
42:04Takes the turn.
42:05He's digging for second.
42:06Here's the throw.
42:07And he'll pull into second with two gone.
42:10Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason.
42:13You're so much more likely to get something you can handle.
42:16Really important at bat coming up now.
42:25Right through there for a strike.
42:30Brother takes off.
42:32Pitch misses.
42:33Oh, the throw is wild.
42:38And he's safe at the plate as they take the lead.
42:41It's four to three.
42:43Ball catchers can get a little excited right here when it's a shorter throw.
42:47But anything offline could result in a run.
42:50And right there, the throwing error leads to another run score.
42:53A little bit low.
42:55Ball two.
42:58And a foul ball.
43:04Looking to get the tying run on base.
43:11Blue Jays down a run.
43:13Here in the top half of inning number seven.
43:15And that one almost hit him.
43:21To the right side.
43:24He takes it himself to the bag.
43:26And that'll do it.
43:28Midway in inning number seven.
43:30And it's time to stretch.
43:31It's the Rays four.
43:32And the Blue Jays three.
43:34It's an A.
43:37We're back in a new picture here to start the bottom of the seventh.
43:40Brendan Little.
43:41Well, walks have been a big issue for him this year.
43:44So, I expect these hitters to be patient up there.
43:53Well, one run game.
43:55Stepping in.
43:56Hunter for Duccia.
43:57Hunter for Duccia.
44:03And that skips in the dirt.
44:21Last couple of pitches.
44:22Breaking balls away.
44:23I think he's going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he
44:28wants to go back there later in this count.
44:32Ground ball to the right side.
44:35Clement over to first.
44:36And they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh.
44:40Up next for the Rays designated hitter, Chandler Simpson.
44:54Base knock right field.
44:58So, a man aboard now with one away.
45:01Nice line drive to the pull side.
45:03Met it out front.
45:04But just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield.
45:07And now they've got some speed on first.
45:09So, we'll see if they try to get him into motion.
45:11Next to hit, Taylor Waynes.
45:27Oh, one down.
45:29That one fouled off.
45:40Swing and a miss.
45:42Struck him out.
45:43Had him out front for strike three.
45:45Well, take a look at the three-pitch sequence here.
45:47Pretty simple in terms of putting away at the plate.
45:50Once you're ahead 0-2 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter
45:56is going to be trying to protect and battle.
45:58And right there, clearly he was in swing mode.
46:00But all you can do is hope to foul that off.
46:02Slides for the stop.
46:03And that's a nice play to end the inning.
46:07The Rays strand just the one.
46:09But they hold on to a 4-3 lead.
46:14Now pitching for the Rays.
46:16Back and a new arm on the mound to start D-8.
46:18Cole Sulcer.
46:20Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead late in the ball game.
46:26Some of them are just wired different.
46:28So, we'll see what he's got here.
46:29Springer.
46:30The leadoff batter as he looks at ball one.
46:35And that drops in for a strike.
46:38Springer looking to hit career homer number 300 in this game.
46:43This to third.
46:45Over to Diaz.
46:46Leadoff man is out here in the eighth.
46:49Up next for the Blue Jays.
46:51First baseman, Vladimir Guerrero.
46:58This one in the air right field.
47:00Fraley really on his horse score.
47:03Can't get there.
47:03This one lands foul.
47:05Let's just take a moment to appreciate how rare this is, dude.
47:10You know who never got to 3,500 hits?
47:12Derek Jeter.
47:14Also, Honus Wagner.
47:15Paul Molitor as well.
47:17Just five players and he can make it six.
47:20Got him swinging.
47:21It's a strikeout.
47:23Both saw a solid effort out of their starter.
47:25And the bullpen is following suit.
47:27It's just a good day as a manager or as a pitching coach when you can hand the ball off
47:31to multiple arms
47:32and get stability from all of their performances.
47:35Now it's the D.H.
47:37Davis Schneider.
47:38Aye!
47:44Ball, that's it.
47:52Rays holding on to a one-run lead.
47:55And we're at the top of the eighth.
47:56Can't make contact with the sweeper.
47:58Man, that was pretty gross right there.
48:05Swing and he breaks his back.
48:07Diaz puts the tag on him and that's the inning.
48:11Nothing doing for the Blue Jays.
48:12They still trail it here 4-3.
48:22Back here in Tampa Bay and stepping in for the Rays, Ritchie Palacios.
48:27Ritchie Palacios!
48:31Hey!
48:42Strike two.
48:52In the air out to center.
48:55And it falls!
48:57And the leadoff man aboard.
49:01Really nice job of two-strike hitting in that at bat.
49:03When you flare a ball out behind second base, it's really a tough spot for anyone to get to.
49:08And you're never trying to do that as a hitter.
49:10But when you do, I tell you what, you're yelling at it the entire way to get down.
49:17And that's in for a strike.
49:190-1.
49:32Palacios gets his lead at first.
49:34Nobody out.
49:42Got him swinging for the K.
49:44Well done behind the dish.
49:46That's a pretty nasty pitch right there.
49:48I'd call it a power curveball in the 80s.
49:51It's got so much spin on it.
49:53And you really don't have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it's going to do before
49:57you have to commit.
49:58It was a good one for the swinging strikeout.
50:00So next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Cedric Monk.
50:03Back to the sixth.
50:04He drove a two-run shot out of here to help them get the lead they're working with.
50:08They are definitely one of the bigger moments in this game so far.
50:11And it could be one we look back on when this game is over as well.
50:24Just missed.
50:25Second time.
50:35Swing and a line drive.
50:36That's a face hit into center field.
50:38Lead runner touches second and for third.
50:41The relay throw.
50:42And he's safe.
50:43So it's first and third with one down.
50:48I could watch base hits like that one all day long.
50:51And so could every hitting coach in the league.
50:53Just a nice line drive into center field.
51:05Nope.
51:05At the ball.
51:06Could use a ground ball here.
51:07Something in the infield.
51:09Runner at first base.
51:10Get two.
51:11Get out of this.
51:16Swing and a miss.
51:17And that one missed by a ton.
51:26Late with the swing there.
51:43Spoils the two-strike pitch.
51:44And he'll see another.
51:54Two-on-one out.
51:56Can't connect on the curveball.
51:58Struck him out.
51:59Well, that's a curveball that people like to describe as a hammer or Uncle Charlie.
52:04And you can see why.
52:05It's not a looping slow curve.
52:07He throws it hard.
52:08And it gets plenty of bite on the end.
52:10Here comes the manager out of the Blue Jays' dugout.
52:13And he will make a move to the pen.
52:15Brendan Little.
52:16Done for the night.
52:17And he leaves in a one-run game.
52:19New pitcher coming on.
52:21We'll be back in a minute.
52:23Now pitching.
52:23Now here's Tyler Rogers out of the pen.
52:26Should be a good first matchup for him here.
52:28He's been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season.
52:32They've had a lot of trouble squaring him up.
52:39Here's the second baseman.
52:40Carson Williams.
52:41He's already homered in this game.
52:47And a breaking ball drops in for a strike.
53:00Pulls out one foul.
53:08Runners out first and third.
53:09Two away.
53:10Here's the bottom half of the eighth inning.
53:17Oh, that pinch is out.
53:27Swing and a miss.
53:29Struck him out.
53:30That ends the inning as they squander a chance to pick up some insurance.
53:34So the Rays strand a pair.
53:36And it remains a 4-3 game.
53:38Last chance coming up for the Blue Jays.
53:57Back down and on the mound, the closer, Griffin Jacks.
54:01Save opportunity for him right here.
54:04And he's their guy.
54:05Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W.
54:09Sliced hard, but foul.
54:14And everyone is in for a strike at 95.
54:23And a strikeout for the first out here in the night.
54:27Good late cut for the strikeout there.
54:29That thing really got in on him.
54:31And, you know, the cutter isn't really a huge swing and miss pitch most of the time because it's not
54:36really meant to move a whole lot.
54:37You're just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact.
54:41But that one right there did a whole lot more than that.
54:44That was a really good pitch.
54:46That's a ball.
54:47Tried to attack with the sweeper.
54:51That one found hard the other way.
55:00Breaking ball and that got him.
55:02First base.
55:03Up next for the Blue Jays.
55:06One down.
55:06Runner at first.
55:08Ernie Clements.
55:09Next up for the Blue Jays.
55:11And there's the strike.
55:13Fell so many hard-throwing relievers in the game these days.
55:15You would think that hitter had made the adjustment.
55:18But I don't know if you ever get used to it.
55:20Just pumping gas out of the bullpen.
55:22So hard to play catch-up.
55:28Up next for the Blue Jays.
55:30Shortstop, Andres Canelo.
55:35And he takes one right on the black.
55:37And it's all in one.
55:39Right now they're looking for something.
55:40Hit hard into the gaps.
55:42Give them an opportunity with two outs to score that run from first.
55:46One strike away.
55:48Got him!
55:49And that's the ball game.
55:52Whether you're a season ticket holder or you just come to a couple of games a year.
55:55To see your team win at home, there's just something special about that.
55:58Good job by this team to get it done for the hometown fans.
56:01And the final score here, 4-3.
56:04They hang on to win it by a run.
56:06For Chris Singleton and our entire crew, I'm John Shambi saying so long from Tampa Bay.
56:26All people, all people must go dancing out on the dancing floors.
56:39There were a hundred horses dancing, maybe a hundred and twenty-four.
56:51All the horses must go dancing.
56:58There's only...
57:01There's only...
57:02There's only...
57:02There's only...
57:02There's only...
57:02There's only...
57:03There's only...
57:05There's only...
