R.o.o.k.i.e Truckers - Season 1 Episode 3 - Lord of the Flies
Transcript
00:02G'day, I'm Steve Graham. I've spent my life driving trucks across Australia.
00:10Bloody pain in the arse, Camel.
00:14It's a tough job. This is a bastard and a bit of road.
00:18Now, we've got a big problem in the industry.
00:21Aussie trucking is at a crisis point.
00:2426,000 drivers are needed to fill a huge labour market gap.
00:28Australia relies on us. Supermarket shelves will be stripped bare.
00:33They need our trucks.
00:35But now, after decades behind the wheel, a generation of drivers is about to retire.
00:43But we have a massive crisis, a driver shortage.
00:47So me and my mates are going to do what we can to pass the torch and get the next
00:51generation ready.
00:52He reckons he wants to be thrown in the deep end, I'm throwing him in at 100mph.
00:56Living the dream.
00:57You're doing alright.
01:00I need a break.
01:01This is so bloody stressful.
01:03Come on buttercup, you'll be alright.
01:05I need it to happen now.
01:06That's a lot of pressure.
01:08If the trucks stop, the nation stops.
01:20It's going to be very hard to leave Wales, to start my new life in Australia.
01:25All of my friends and family are here.
01:27Anyway, I've put the house on the market, and that's it.
01:31There's no going back now.
01:33In the UK, I've been driving here for 15 years.
01:36I felt that I'd reached my peak.
01:39The possibilities are absolutely endless in Australia compared to the UK.
01:43Watching the outback truckers and seeing what they can do out there, I thought, it's a dream.
01:54My parents and my partner are on the way over, coming to give me a hand.
01:58Hello.
01:59Hi.
02:00The day has come.
02:01He's decided that his life is changing now, and he'd like to explore Australia.
02:07So, it's good for him, really.
02:09He's...
02:09We're very proud of what he's done.
02:11Anyway, these boxes don't pack themselves.
02:12No, they don't, Dad.
02:15That's it.
02:15I think it's going to be very hard for us not having him here,
02:20because he's doing the exciting bit, and we're going to do the missing bits, I think.
02:24Teamwork.
02:26Oh, good to go, mate. Yeah.
02:32There you go, Dad.
02:33I think that's everything for him in the house, isn't it?
02:37Come here, Mum.
02:38Aw, sweetheart.
02:39Aw.
02:41This hug's got to last a long time.
02:42His fault.
02:45Hasn't it?
02:46Yeah.
02:47Hey.
02:48You have fun. Enjoy it.
02:49Thank you for everything, Dad.
02:51Hey.
02:52What's bad for?
02:53You enjoy yourself.
02:56Bye.
02:57Have fun.
02:58Bye.
03:06Bye.
03:09Bye.
03:11Bye.
03:12Bye.
03:12Settling into Western Australia, Phil is now equipped with the truck licences required to work on Aussie roads.
03:20Driving from one side of Australia to another, it's been on my bucket list for a very, very long time.
03:26I've only ever really done six or seven hours down the road, because in the UK, six or seven hours,
03:33you've pretty much gone from one side of the country to the other.
03:36And that's the big difference driving here in Australia to the UK.
03:40I really am learning to drive all over again.
03:46The job coming up for Phil is his first big run.
03:49And by big, we mean huge.
03:55It's been a dream of mine to meet somebody that I've looked up to for a long time.
04:03Phil's come to me because we're very, very busy in the West.
04:06We managed to get a hold of Phil to do a load for us.
04:09We've got a lot going on.
04:16Let's go see Yogi.
04:18All right, here's Phil, my rookie.
04:20He's on time, which is number one thing for a rookie.
04:24Be on time.
04:25So here he is.
04:25He's going to help us out.
04:26Phil.
04:27G'day, mate.
04:28Good morning, Yogi.
04:28Pleasure to meet you, mate.
04:29Likewise, mate.
04:30Likewise.
04:31Absolutely.
04:31Thanks for doing this, mate.
04:32You'll be a bonus, mate.
04:34Will you help us out here?
04:35It'll be an interesting load.
04:37An interesting couple of weeks for you.
04:38Yeah.
04:39To work alongside you is living the trucking dream.
04:42Living the trucking dream.
04:43Yeah, right.
04:44Well, let's get loaded first.
04:45Don't get too ahead of yourself here.
04:46There might not be a dream after it.
04:48So I've got two different ways of thinking.
04:51One, I want the rookie to succeed.
04:53But two, I want that job done.
04:54We need that job done efficiently.
04:56We need the customer happy.
05:00They've just pulled the machines out the side here, so we are ready to load.
05:04These are autonomous robot sprayers.
05:07These sprayers are state-of-the-art technology.
05:09They're the best in the game.
05:11They're $300,000 each.
05:13We're moving something that's never been moved before.
05:16The first time this has ever gone on a truck is sitting on you.
05:19You know?
05:20That's a lot of pressure.
05:20It is a lot of pressure.
05:21Yeah, yeah.
05:22It's not for the faint-hearted.
05:30Today we're picking up recycled plastics from Narrabri.
05:33And then we'll head down to a depot in Melbourne.
05:36My name is Shelley Roseby.
05:38I'm 40.
05:39I'm a PE teacher and primary school teacher by trade.
05:42For the past two months, Shelley's been building her own trucking business.
05:47To be as efficient as we can financially, the need to run two trailers is really paramount.
05:54So, if I take a step up and get the multi-combination, I can tow more trailers.
06:01That's what I need.
06:04Upgrading to an MC or multi-combination licence will allow Shelley to haul B-doubles and road trains solo.
06:11But until Shelley passes her MC test, she needs a qualified driver alongside her.
06:18So, we've recently invested in the truck.
06:20We've purchased it for $40,000.
06:22So, we have gone out on a limb with this.
06:24I've really, you know, put everything else to the wayside.
06:27So, we have to make it work.
06:29But to pass the test and make the business work,
06:32the next few runs with more than one trailer need to be successful.
06:37Guiding her down the road is her mentor, Sludge.
06:40Sludge is coming over to help me because it's a B-double load.
06:43So, I can't take that load on my own.
06:46It'll be exciting.
07:00Fashionably late.
07:03Fashionably late.
07:04Hello.
07:05Hello.
07:06How are you?
07:06Oh, wonderful.
07:07Nice to see you.
07:08I am very nervous.
07:09I am very nervous.
07:10I'm a little bit apprehensive.
07:12But look, it'll be great.
07:14Yeah, this is Shelley's first run with two trailers on.
07:17So, this is probably make it or break it for her and her new company
07:21because she needs to get a multi.
07:23If you're going to be in trucking, you have to have an MC.
07:26You've got to be able to do multi combination
07:28because you've got to be able to tow more than one trailer.
07:34Righty-ho.
07:35Let's get on this road.
07:41So, how are you feeling?
07:43You excited about it?
07:45I'm excited, but it's real now.
07:48It is?
07:49You know, it's not really exciting now.
07:51It's a f***ing worries now, actually.
07:53Really?
07:54Yeah.
07:54Yeah, that's all right.
07:55Two trailers, that's going to be good.
07:57Double what you're used to.
08:00Yes, and look, twice as much responsibility.
08:04If you tip it over, make sure you do it on your side.
08:07I don't want to f***ing joke about that.
08:14It's a lot of responsibility, so she's got to be nervous about it, too.
08:18You know, I wouldn't be getting in with her either
08:20if I didn't have trust in her.
08:22Can't drive. I can't drive.
08:23The components of the MC test are competency-based, so you actually have to be able to do them and
08:29have experience doing them.
08:30So, it'll be good because a lot of the competencies I will be exposed to just on this trip.
08:40Is that us?
08:42That'll be you.
08:47Alrighty, let's go.
08:51Shelly's load today is just over 31 ton bags of recycled plastic from a facility in Narrabri.
08:59Over three days, she'll need to haul them over 1,175 kilometres of highway to Australia's second biggest city, Melbourne.
09:17Not only is it Shelly's first time with two trailers, but if the one-ton bags don't arrive upright, the
09:23load could be deemed too unsafe to unload and be rejected.
09:27This is the bags that Shelly's carting to Melbourne, which is full of this stuff.
09:33You know, it's like Santa Claus snow.
09:37And this is what the concern is, because in the bags, they're just obviously going to waffle around.
09:42So, in the next 100 k's, we've probably got to stop three times and pull them down so they tighten
09:48up nice and tight.
09:49The gates hold them from leaning over.
09:53Right?
09:57Oh, well.
09:58Thanks for your help, mate.
09:59How do I get tied up in this shit?
10:01I know.
10:02So, how did you go for weight?
10:04Yeah, good.
10:05Just over 30 tonnes.
10:06To your horn.
10:10Hey, you guys.
10:15So, when you change gears now, take a few more rears.
10:20Now, you're loaded.
10:22Bring it up another couple of hundred rears than you would with a single.
10:26Like, it won't roll like it does with one on.
10:30Do you understand that?
10:31Yep.
10:33Should I shut up?
10:34No, no.
10:35It's good.
10:36I wouldn't have done that.
10:37No, I love the roll.
10:38No, no, but I'm just...
10:39You've got to warm into it too, because you've got two trailers now.
10:44It'll be interesting to see what it's like when we get down here to pull the straps down,
10:48and how much the straps do take.
10:50Oh, yeah, I'm definitely interested to see.
10:52You wouldn't want to get down there and then get turned away.
10:56Just gently roll up onto this curb here.
10:59Thanks, Captain.
11:01Let's get out and check this load.
11:04See here?
11:06That bag up there?
11:07Oh, yeah.
11:07It's actually leaning out.
11:09Yeah, it is, isn't it?
11:10Definitely concerned about it.
11:12It's probably going to slow us up a little bit tomorrow, because we'll have to check it
11:15more often than what we had anticipated.
11:34Oh, warm up, sweetheart.
11:36Oh, God, it's hard in the morning.
11:41F***ing roundabout, this is going to be interesting, isn't it?
11:47Shelley's first challenge of the day is tackling the streets of the country town, Coonabarabran.
11:57Yeah, copy.
11:58Yeah, got oil burning.
12:00F***ing, mate.
12:02Yeah, I reckon you should pull over and have a look at something going on with your engine.
12:07It's blowing a bit of blue smoke.
12:09Pull over.
12:10Yeah, righto.
12:12You should have pulled over there.
12:14I don't mean a bit.
12:15I mean shitloads.
12:18F***ing.
12:19Pull up here.
12:20Right here.
12:20Left.
12:21You reckon?
12:22Yep.
12:22You said that we're blowing a shitload of blue smoke.
12:33What I want you to understand is the level of commitment that these folks have got for
12:37their product.
12:38Okay.
12:39See that strap there?
12:40Yes.
12:41And there's protection under there.
12:42None of that touches, right?
12:43Yeah.
12:43So when these go into the paddock in New South Wales, they're pristine, right?
12:48Okay.
12:48So the level of detail...
12:50Having moved to the other side of the world, Phil's about to begin his Aussie trucking
12:55dream.
12:55But this job for Yogi is massive.
12:59Four and a half thousand kilometres, crossing three states, each with their own rules and
13:05regulations from Western Australia to New South Wales, like driving from London to Turkey.
13:14But before he departs, Phil first needs to load the $600,000 worth of farm machinery
13:21safely and without any damage.
13:24The whole concept of this load is no damage on time in one piece.
13:31A lot of people don't realise that the loading of the trailer is actually the driver's
13:34responsibility.
13:35So the whole no damage to these machines, no touching chains, no scraping paint.
13:41This is the level they want from us.
13:43This is the level I want from you.
13:44Okay.
13:44Is what I see there.
13:45Okay.
13:47This particular load is a big part of our business.
13:49It's a lot of money generated for our income.
13:52So I really need Phil to be on top of his game.
13:57Yogi needs to know if Phil can handle the loading and unloading of the goods without
14:02a scratch.
14:04The nerves and the adrenaline have definitely kicked in, that's for sure.
14:07I've never loaded anything that has to be such millimetre perfect.
14:11Right on Phil.
14:12I reckon if you're up there watching, up in the middle of the trailer walking with them.
14:16Okay.
14:16You stand up on that there.
14:17Yep.
14:18And you just point left to right, whatever you want to do.
14:20Okay.
14:21This is right about now.
14:23This is the sort of go time, bud.
14:25Okay.
14:25Trying to put a bit of game face on here and just have a look at this and get it
14:28right,
14:28you know.
14:29So you're watching all the time, you're watching what's going on.
14:32You're constantly looking.
14:35I don't think we ever relax in this part of the stage.
14:45How you going out there, Phil?
14:46Yeah, yeah.
14:46Good.
14:47Good.
14:47A little bit towards me.
14:49Yep.
14:51Nice and loud, bud, if you want it.
14:53A little bit to the passenger side.
14:59Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
15:00As you, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
15:04It's really close this side.
15:06But we're looking at millimetre perfect here.
15:09Wow.
15:09Alright.
15:10So if they go back.
15:11Probably, you know, split the difference, about 50 mil that way, you know.
15:15And move it over a little bit.
15:16Go back and over.
15:18Go on, as you are, as you are.
15:20A little bit more.
15:21A little bit that way.
15:22A little bit more.
15:24Yep.
15:26It's sitting there nice.
15:27Your seriousness has kicked in now.
15:31Righto, next one.
15:32Next one.
15:33You want to centre yourself up?
15:35Go on, as you are.
15:37Right, hold it there.
15:39Carry and check both swords.
15:41Go on.
15:42Right, hold it there.
15:44I think we're down.
15:48Now, the real test is you've got to tie this on.
15:52You've got to strap it down, chain it down, because I want you to cross Australia knowing
15:56that you've done it right.
15:59Securing a load is one of the most important skills a truck driver needs to master.
16:05Once on the trailer, Phil's cargo mustn't budge an inch.
16:11What would you recommend to hold it on with?
16:16Seeing what you're looking at, you've got slotted points there.
16:19I would use chains.
16:20Perfect.
16:22Do you have a crack at that?
16:24Yep.
16:24I'll come back in 10 minutes.
16:26Alright.
16:27And see how I get on.
16:31Yeah, the pressure is, the pressure is on for sure.
16:36I hope I've got enough chains.
16:39The importance of securing the load is paramount.
16:43It's the number one priority.
16:44Today, the loading time is the cheapest part of the load.
16:48If this load moves and goes wrong, we're going to do damage.
16:51Now we turn up with damage booms is not good enough.
16:54The time spent today, you can't comprehend the money you'll save.
17:00Alright, I'm pretty happy with those four chains.
17:02I'm watching everything he does here, everything.
17:06I'm sure there is many ways of doing this,
17:08but I'm trying my best not to go anywhere near the paint.
17:12Yes, with Yogi being there watching over my shoulder,
17:15it's like your school headmaster watching over you,
17:18making sure you're doing everything right.
17:19I reckon I'll change a couple of things though.
17:22You just put a strap on over there around the bottom of that frame
17:25that I don't like.
17:28I'm going to see what Yogi says.
17:30See whether I get full marks or not.
17:32I like what you've done with the chains.
17:34I'm not sold on this strap, Idy.
17:36Okay.
17:37I think I'd much prefer it if this strap was hooked back on itself
17:40and choked into there and pulled back.
17:43Okay. Okay.
17:44Yeah, yeah. I'll do that then.
17:45Alright.
17:45Alright.
17:46I thought there might be more that I've done wrong
17:50or that needs changing.
17:52I'm glad it's just the one strap.
17:55Alright mate, how are you looking?
17:57Yeah, I think I'm there.
17:58Righto.
17:59Alright, let's walk through.
18:00You tell me what you've done
18:01and I'll walk around with you on this one here.
18:03I know the walk around is the most important part of this day.
18:06So I've got four chains.
18:08Yep.
18:08Pulling in each different direction.
18:10Yep.
18:10Criss-crossing.
18:11Yep.
18:12Oversized flags on.
18:13Yep.
18:13I'm happy with that because they're all nice and tight.
18:15The beacon on.
18:17Oversized signs.
18:18So now the big thing to do is stand back.
18:20Each one of those nozzles.
18:21Yep.
18:22The green nozzles.
18:23Yes.
18:24They're worth a lot of money.
18:25Right.
18:26So just remember that.
18:28Yeah.
18:29You know, when you're sneaking into a parking bay
18:31and you've got little leafy trees.
18:32Yep.
18:33If we damage any of those, the machine isn't usable.
18:36The next challenge now is to find out where you're going
18:39and now where you're going is quite difficult.
18:42So I've got a map for you here.
18:43Right.
18:44Simple start, Brookton.
18:45First stop, Courage and most important stop of the trip.
18:48Check the load.
18:49Check the load.
18:53Phil will be travelling a total distance of 4,500 kilometres,
18:58spending five long and hot days on the road
19:01and spanning three of Australia's huge southern states,
19:05each with their own different trucking rules and regulations.
19:11All right, bud.
19:11I've done everything I can do here.
19:13It's entirely up to you now, mate.
19:15So...
19:15Good luck, bud.
19:16Thank you very much, Yogi.
19:17No worries, mate.
19:18If you need me, ring me.
19:20Okay.
19:24All right.
19:25Let's go.
19:26Cheers, Yogi.
19:28I've got big concerns with sending Phil into state.
19:31Everything is different over in the eastern states.
19:35It's new rules, new roads, new dimension laws,
19:39new fatigue laws, new cameras.
19:42This is not the UK.
19:43You know, there's a lot of distance and a lot more open spaces.
19:47So I've got massive concerns about Phil going over there.
19:54At the end of the day, you've got to chuck the rookies into deep end,
19:56don't you?
20:09Copy, mate.
20:10Yeah.
20:11I reckon you should blow and have a look at something going on with your engine.
20:14It's blowing a bit of blue smoke.
20:17Pull over.
20:19Yeah, your honour.
20:20You should have pulled over there.
20:21With over a thousand kilometres still to travel, Shelley's truck is showing signs of serious mechanical problems.
20:29I don't mean a bit, I mean shitloads.
20:41Pull up here, right here, left.
20:44You reckon? Have you said that we're blowing a shitload of blues, mate?
20:55Right there. I can see the smoke down here. It was just coming out the back.
21:01I've got no f***ing smell, so I can't.
21:09Not hot. I haven't got any heat.
21:12No, I haven't either. I thought you could see smoke.
21:14He said he could see smoke.
21:16Yeah, I thought I'd just seen a puff coming out there.
21:21If there's smoke, something's hot, but I can't even feel any heat.
21:25I can't smell anything.
21:26It's not.
21:28I don't know.
21:30The trucker that called us on the radio said there was a heap of smoke coming out the back,
21:35which sounds like brakes stuck on, or else there's something funny with the truck going on.
21:40I thought it was the trailer brakes, but it's not.
21:42The worry is, is that it was at such low speed.
21:45Like, we're about to enter a hundred zone.
21:47Like, we don't want to be doing a hundred if there's a problem.
21:57Enough.
22:00We'll just go.
22:02Go.
22:03There's nothing, and there's no oil.
22:06There's no nothing underneath.
22:10And there's nothing coming out the exhaust, and it's not brakes.
22:13So we would have had drag.
22:15We would have heard it.
22:16We would have seen it.
22:17No, you'd know straight away.
22:18All right.
22:20Let's go.
22:23Here we go.
22:24Oh.
22:29Yeah, that's a little bit stressful.
22:31It'll be all right.
22:32We'll soon find out.
22:39You don't want to be, you know, starting out on your way to somewhere and having mechanical issues.
22:45Like, that's not ideal at all.
22:47Especially if it's your brakes and you're weighing 65 tonne.
22:52I'm just having a look to see if there's any smoke or anything out in the back, but we've got
22:57nothing.
22:58I've got nothing on my side either.
23:00Nothing at all.
23:11We need to be in Melbourne to unload Friday morning, and we've got a thousand k's ahead of us.
23:17So we need to keep moving.
23:19We need to make sure that when we're doing things, we're doing them efficiently with time.
23:31This road is not going to be good for this load.
23:34Like being in a bloody motocross track around this road over here.
23:37Yeah, so one of the bags has already moved and is leaning on the pole.
23:43So we're going to have to keep an eye on that today.
23:46Especially on a road like this, you can really feel the camber of the road and how strong that is
23:50pulling us to that left side.
23:51We choose that side that the bag is already leaning on.
23:54So we need to keep the bags as straight as possible to avoid them slumping over and then pushing on
24:02each other, which can actually result in the load being rejected when we get down the other end.
24:09Obviously, by the time you stop and check the load, it's easily 15 minutes by the time you pull up,
24:14check restraints and then get back in the truck and get going again, if not more.
24:16So that adds to the driving time.
24:25Not much here, is it?
24:29So it's starting to bow a little bit, but it doesn't surprise me with the bloody roads we're on here.
24:34And then down here, the frigging straps are starting to get loose.
24:37So we'll pop it and have a look, because this is the one that I'm concerned about.
24:46Yeah, it's starting to poke a bit.
24:48That one's sitting on the guy, look at that.
24:49Yeah, we're going to tighten that one up.
24:58Now this is where the adventure really begins.
25:05It was amazing working with Yogi, he's somebody that I've looked up to for a very long time.
25:11Yogi has entrusted Phil with trucking a $600,000 load of farm machinery to New South Wales.
25:19At 4,500 kilometres, it will be by far the longest job Phil has ever driven.
25:26It's critical he keeps a close eye on his fatigue levels.
25:31We've got a long way to go.
25:34Your concentration has to be 100% all the time.
25:38I've got to make sure that load is 100% all the way across.
25:42One of the biggest worries a truck driver can have doing that sort of distance,
25:48the fatigue will kick in.
25:53Phil will learn whether he wants to be an interstate truck driver or, you know,
25:58he can handle the round town stuff, you know.
26:00He'll get a real feel for it.
26:07There's a lot of overhanging trees like that one there.
26:10And as Yogi said, those little sensors on the side of the machine, they're worth a lot of money.
26:18It's just after five o'clock.
26:20I can feel it, I can feel that I'm quite tired at the moment.
26:24So I'm going to park here, so I'm all ready to leave in the morning.
26:31That's it. Day one done.
26:45The road that we're going to be going on next, it is very bumpy.
26:48It's notorious for loads moving and shifting.
26:54So here we go, day two.
27:01Now, slow down a bit. It is bumpy.
27:06See what Yogi means.
27:08The load is moving.
27:09Alright, flexing.
27:17Oh, no.
27:19There's a bump.
27:24This road is annoying.
27:27I need a break.
27:29And add to it all, I believe my air conditioning has packed in.
27:33Great.
27:45How are you feeling going into Melbourne today, Shell?
27:48Are you worried?
27:49Excited?
27:50Stressed?
27:52Um, probably all of those.
27:54All of the above.
27:55Tick, tick, tick.
27:55I am looking forward to it.
27:57But, at the same time, I'm pretty well packing it.
28:02Actually.
28:03Ha, ha.
28:03Yeah.
28:06We'll stop up here, have a look at the route going in, and get a plan of attack happening.
28:11Righty-o.
28:13Geez, there's a lot of vehicles.
28:16Right, let's check this load.
28:18Let's have a look.
28:23It's actually settled.
28:24When you feel that bag now, that's solid.
28:27So that shit's...
28:28Oh, God.
28:29That's unreal.
28:30Your hand disappeared in that before.
28:32Before?
28:33Yeah.
28:34On her first paying job, Shelly's hauling the biggest load of her career.
28:40All of the one-ton bags of recycled plastic need to be delivered upright, or risk being rejected.
28:49The next challenge for both truckers is Australia's second biggest city.
28:54Notorious for its heavy traffic.
28:56So, we're now less than 50 kilometres from Melbourne, which, um, is pretty cool, but pretty bloody scary.
29:04The traffic is already quite intense.
29:08I'm nervous, because neither of us really know where we're going.
29:13It's a long time since I've driven in a city like Melbourne.
29:15All right.
29:16Let's go.
29:18I'm just working out if I need to spew first or not.
29:21Spew?
29:23Oh, f***ing harden up, Princess.
29:25Oh, you have no idea.
29:27This is so far out of my f***ing comfort zone.
29:29It's not funny.
29:30Don't feel alone, all right?
29:32Well, look.
29:33Just don't...
29:33Don't push me.
29:36All right, buttercup.
29:37Here we go.
29:38Here we go.
29:39Right up it from here.
29:43We are in Melbourne.
29:45We're here.
29:46Into it.
29:46Let's go.
29:51Oh, my gosh.
29:53This is very, very scary.
29:54Five lanes of traffic.
29:55Holy dooly.
29:56Look how close that truck is.
29:57Duffing up, buttercup.
29:59You'll be all right.
30:00You've got this.
30:04Oh, my gosh.
30:05This is...
30:06Woo-hoo!
30:07Look at you go.
30:08You're in Melbourne City in a V-double.
30:10We're driving a V-double in Melbourne.
30:13F***ing me.
30:13Yo.
30:14If you had said that six months ago,
30:16I would have laughed at you and said,
30:18I would put money on the fact that I would not be doing that.
30:21Yeah.
30:21And here we are.
30:23Jeez, look at that.
30:24Looking ahead.
30:25Imagine if you had to come around that corner.
30:27F***ing me.
30:27At 80.
30:29Far out.
30:31This is a bum-ha-ta-bum-bum.
30:35So we're only 20 minutes from the destination now.
30:38So as long as she doesn't cock it up,
30:39she's got this in the bag, I hope.
30:41But don't count your chickens till they hatch.
30:43I can hardly even put my foot on the clutch.
30:45It's shaking that much.
30:47It's all right.
30:53Strike three.
30:55Oh, my God.
30:56You see, what I would have done is come back.
30:58Because you're running downhill.
30:59Oh.
31:00You could have just came back into that one now.
31:02Yeah.
31:03Look at this.
31:04Far out.
31:05We're going to turn off this Jackson Street exit, I presume.
31:10It's 950 metres.
31:14Actually, you can stay at this lane if you want to.
31:16Stay over like you.
31:19Stay over.
31:21Get out of that gear.
31:23I'm just poking up air in it.
31:24Yeah.
31:24You don't have to ride the clutch.
31:26No.
31:26Forward.
31:28Forward.
31:30Yeah.
31:32Go.
31:33Don't follow.
31:36F***.
31:44Fatigue is a really big thing over here.
31:48It's the hours that I can do is just 16 hours in WA.
31:58They're huge.
31:59That's a huge day.
32:03On his epic 4,500-kilometre haul across Australia, Phil's carting $600,000 worth of farm machinery
32:11on a job for his mentor Yogi.
32:14And it has to arrive in pristine condition.
32:18Out here, fatigue is one of the biggest factors that rookies need to manage.
32:27We're surely heading towards the 90 mile straight.
32:34And here it is.
32:3690 miles straight.
32:37Australia's longest straight road.
32:42Keep on going straight for 146.6 kilometres.
32:48I should be able to do that.
33:00So here we are going along the Nullarbor, getting to the Great Australia Bike.
33:05Never been here before.
33:26Here we are.
33:35Yeah.
33:41That's amazing.
33:43That really is.
34:04That was extraordinary to see that sight.
34:06It really was.
34:07I'm going to jump in the cab, and we'll make a mile.
34:12Back onto the narrow, lovely roads.
34:17It's a lovely 38 degrees today.
34:20Yeah.
34:23Damn.
34:25Piss off flight.
34:26Piss off.
34:29Piss off.
34:53Today it's just been flat out driving.
34:56I am tired.
34:57I didn't sleep very well last night either, so my fatigue is kicking in.
35:04So yeah, another big day.
35:06Another seven, eight hundred k's done.
35:09I'm just going to give Yogi a call now.
35:12Give him an update of what's happening.
35:14There we go.
35:15Yogi, how are you doing?
35:16Phil, what's going on, mate?
35:18It's been hard going.
35:19I am feeling it.
35:20I'm feeling the tiredness and the fatigue.
35:23It's a long way out there.
35:24It's a long, long straights.
35:26You know, it's hard out there, but just brake accordingly.
35:29Yeah.
35:30Drive accordingly to the conditions.
35:31You doing all right?
35:32You're past halfway now, mate.
35:34I know that.
35:35Yeah.
35:35Past halfway.
35:36Yeah.
35:36Yeah.
35:36Right.
35:37Okay then, Yogi.
35:38Good night.
35:39Cheers.
35:39Thank you, Yogi.
35:40Thank you, mate.
35:41Cheers, mate.
35:49Another nice, fresh morning to start the day.
35:52We're going to be going into New South Wales.
35:55The long days, you start to feel it.
35:58Only one more day and we'll get these machines off and I'll be able to relax a little bit.
36:05When you're setting off, especially when the sun is rising, it's probably one of the most dangerous
36:10times during the day for animal and wildlife.
36:13They've all woken up.
36:14They're going to get some food and some water.
36:16So, you've always got to be alert of what's happening around you.
36:27We're now in New South Wales.
36:30So, time zone is going to change again.
36:38Oh, shit.
36:45Emu, I believe it was.
36:46Decided to cross the road.
36:48Got to ruin my A game now.
36:54I'm starting to feel the edge of the trip now, you know, just almost there.
37:07So, if my parents could see me now, I'm pretty certain that they'll both be smiling.
37:11Very proud of their son driving from one side of Australia to the other.
37:17My mum has always told me to explore and live life and just go for any dream that I have.
37:24So, between the pair of them, I'm sure that they'll be really, really proud.
37:33We have traveled 780 k's today.
37:38I'm looking forward to this rest.
37:44And that's that.
37:45Done.
37:52Well, today is the big day.
37:54It's about a two-hour drive to our destination to unload the machines.
38:03When you have over $600,000 worth of equipment sitting on your tray, that sticks in your mind.
38:12Having over 15 years driving semi-trucks in the UK was a breeze compared to driving over here.
38:22This is where we're going to be dropping the machines.
38:25So, look at this.
38:27We make sure we don't touch his gates.
38:39So, let's unload.
38:42One hurdle remains fulfilled.
38:44Nice and slowly.
38:46It's the driver's responsibility to ensure loading and unloading occurs with zero damage.
38:52This is the moment of truth.
38:56Keep on going.
38:58Keep on going.
39:01That's it.
39:04She's off.
39:05Look at that.
39:05Fantastic.
39:07Bloody marvellous.
39:08Thank you very much, James.
39:10Well, there you go.
39:11It's off.
39:13Fantastic.
39:13Yeah.
39:18Right.
39:18So, that's that.
39:19The machine's all off.
39:20You're only going to give Yogi a ring.
39:21No.
39:22Look at that.
39:23Look, I managed it.
39:27The eagle has landed, mate.
39:29Yeah.
39:29Oh, my.
39:30That's fantastic.
39:31You might want to die.
39:32Wow.
39:33I feel so much better now.
39:35I feel so much better now.
39:35There you go.
39:36Very bad in real life when you get that wind again online.
39:39About to get empty side.
39:40Yeah.
39:41It's all that weight off my shoulders.
39:43Thank you for the opportunity.
39:44Four or five days ago, I was shaking.
39:48I was nervous.
39:49And now it's all gone.
39:51Now I can just drive back to WA and...
39:54Yeah.
39:55Relax.
40:03Forward.
40:06Yeah.
40:07Go.
40:09Don't swallow.
40:09Oh.
40:11F***.
40:12What'd you touch that for?
40:13Right.
40:14Put in the gear.
40:15Right.
40:16Calm your knickers.
40:17No.
40:18Just...
40:19Now let your clutch head on it.
40:20Right.
40:20Now just gently let the clutch head on it.
40:21Because I was on the hill.
40:24Yeah.
40:25And brakes don't just fall off.
40:26You're not on that big hill.
40:29Alright.
40:34Alright.
40:35We didn't hurt anyone.
40:36We'll live and learn.
40:38Alright.
40:39You do not have to throttle to take off.
40:42Even up a hill?
40:43Yes.
40:44Let your clutch out slowly and then bring your throttle.
40:47How am I not going to roll back and hit the car behind me?
40:48Because you've got your foot on the brake and as you take your clutch off, the throttle
40:52will come on.
40:53Alright.
40:54You've done alright.
40:55One f*** up.
40:56One cock up.
40:57You're doing alright.
41:01Let's look through our entrance here.
41:03300 metres.
41:04Yes.
41:05Yep.
41:06Concrete road.
41:06That's the driveway here.
41:07That concrete drive.
41:08So that looks wide enough that I'll just skip on the lane?
41:11Yep.
41:12Come over my way a bit.
41:14That'll do us.
41:14Up there.
41:16Let's go and have a meeting.
41:18While she's made it safely to her drop off, it's the moment of truth for Shelley.
41:23Thanks mate.
41:24The movement in the one ton bags on the trip means that she faces a real risk that the
41:29load will be rejected.
41:32Holy moly.
41:34You should see these gates.
41:36Oh.
41:38Far out.
41:39So, we've had a chat to the guys here and they are concerned about those first three
41:43bags.
41:44Morning.
41:45How you going?
41:45Alright, yourself?
41:46Not bad, not bad.
41:47Bloody good.
41:48Morning.
41:49How are ya?
41:49How bad have we done?
41:55Yeah.
41:56I'll get it off.
41:57Oh yeah.
41:58Yes.
41:58Good job team.
42:01Boom.
42:02Boom.
42:03The forklift driver is so good he can get our dodgy cleaning bags off he thinks in one
42:09go.
42:09So, that would be the best outcome possible.
42:13That would be amazing.
42:16Yep.
42:18Oh.
42:23Holy doly.
42:24Look at the lane on that.
42:25Yeah.
42:28Quite interesting.
42:35So, job done.
42:37I'm super impressed and super proud that she's actually pulled it off.
42:40It's really good.
42:42It's another successful first for Shelly.
42:45Driving a B double.
42:47She's now one step closer to taking the test for her MC license.
42:51As well as her dream of running her own trucking company.
42:55I'd give her a 9 out of 10.
42:58Yeah, I'll take one point off because she stalled it.
43:00She's nervous as shit about her MC license.
43:03But, if she does a bit of practice, she'll smoke it.
43:06It's given me confidence and I know that if I've got the confidence to do it, then I
43:09can own it and I can, I guess, have a better chance of nailing it when it comes time to
43:14the test.
43:14Here we go.
43:15Good job.
43:16Get it out of here.
43:17Thanks, mate.
43:17Good job.
43:17Let's go.
43:20Woohoo!
43:21Woohoo!
43:22Excellent.
43:23Good job, Tase.
43:25Bastard.
43:43Good job, Taseoso.
43:48What are we doing?
43:51I'll see you next time.
43:52Yeah all right.
43:53You guys look into it and see you watch me.
43:55It's a good time.
