00:02Tell you what, this is hard. This sheep's definitely going to get bullied for a tackle.
00:07We've watched Reuben Owen grow up on his remote hill farm with his eight siblings.
00:12Do you want to do the honours, Sid? Buck her out.
00:14That was the old school way of doing it, Dad.
00:16That's where we used to start with the old sheers.
00:19Now he's building a business and a remarkable life in his Yorkshire home.
00:24We need a lot more in here, yeah. It's going faster.
00:26We're going. We're going as fast as we can.
00:28They're a great team, even on a job like this, where there's a bit of pressure to get it done.
00:32They're brilliant.
00:33We'll continue to follow him as he takes on new challenges with the support of friends and family.
00:38Do you want to give us a hand putting the wheel on?
00:40Right, I will do.
00:41I love working with Sid.
00:42He has always been helpful in his own little way.
00:45How do you get someone unstuck at the side of a pond?
00:47Brilliant, sonny. Just brilliant.
00:49And witness him at work.
00:51Get out of there.
00:52And play.
00:55As he leads a new generation of young people choosing to live and work in the idyllic Yorkshire Dales.
01:02No way I'd rather be.
01:03Oh, I love you too.
01:08My business has been going from strength to strength over the last four years.
01:12My brothers, Miles and Sid, are a real help, but they love farming too.
01:17Sonny and Kappa are a great crack to work with, and they're the muscle of the operation.
01:21Jess, my girlfriend, is from a farming family like me, and she can turn her hand to just about anything.
01:27And together, we're a great team.
01:35This week, it's autumn in the Dales.
01:38Oh, here we go. This is the victim.
01:41At a local farmer's quarry, Reuben plans to show the gang they can break up the rock without dynamite.
01:47We're just going to try and drill it, crack it, and then it'll be easier to pull off.
01:51Hopefully.
01:52We'll find out.
01:53I've never done this before.
01:54I think Reuben will be generally heartbroken if this doesn't work.
01:57But will they crack it?
01:59See what happens.
02:00Something's going to happen.
02:01Bang!
02:04At Jess's family farm, Reuben mucks in.
02:07So, I haven't really harnessed up a sheep before, I'll be honest.
02:11As mating season begins.
02:14Oh, now they're running.
02:17There's lamb number one.
02:19One down, 349 to go.
02:24The team's latest bit of kit proves a big surprise for Kappa.
02:29Oh, fuck!
02:32Ooh!
02:36I think we're going to have a cold night now, now we're going to have a heart attack.
02:40As bonfire night nears...
02:42Right.
02:42We're going to make a guy.
02:44...Sunny's quite attached to the trousers.
02:46We've got no movement whatsoever.
02:48I don't want to get...
02:50I don't want to get...
02:54Who went until I get my jeans pulled up?
02:58And can everyone pull together...
03:00...and make a fireworks night to remember.
03:05Oh!
03:08Beautiful!
03:09Yay!
03:11Happy bonfire night!
03:16Ruben's base of operation is in his childhood home of Swaledale, in the north of the Yorkshire Dales.
03:28Autumn drapes the magnificent rural landscape in hues of golden russet, trading late summer's warmth for a sharper chill.
03:40And for Ruben and his team, the new season brings fresh opportunities.
03:49Ruben, Jess and Sunny are at a nearby farm, where an overgrown tree line is damaging a fence.
03:57We're going to clear these trees away, so the farmer can put a new fence line in.
04:01Yeah, definitely.
04:02Then, in a couple of months, we're going to plant some more.
04:05That'll be good.
04:06Yeah.
04:07So, Sunny, you all going to be on throwing logs?
04:09That'll be, mate.
04:10Me and Jess are going to be chainsawing?
04:11Yep.
04:12The team are logging the trees for the farmer to use as firewood.
04:16But as it's the season of gunpowder, treason and plot, any spare branches will be used for a huge party
04:22they're planning.
04:23Have a little bonfire, won't we?
04:25Yeah, it's coming to that time of year.
04:26It is.
04:27Sunny, you'll have to supply the fireworks.
04:29I can manage that.
04:30Sounds good.
04:32Before they can start logging, one last tree needs to come down.
04:37I'll saw a little wedge in the front, cut a little bit through the back, and then once everyone's at
04:41a safe distance,
04:42we'll just give it a nice little pull and I'll pull it over without anyone being anywhere near it.
04:47That is the plan, boys and girls.
04:49Yeah, it's not too big either, is it?
04:50So, we'll rig it up.
04:52Do you want to drive the county again?
04:53Yep.
04:54And, yeah, we've got this tree down.
04:57We've done a little bit of tree filling.
04:59I am also taking our ticket in.
05:01We've got our safety gear on.
05:03Yeah.
05:04Yeah.
05:07Well, let's get set up.
05:10Tension on the 18mm safety cable will help control the tree's fall.
05:14And, as the tree is close to the brook, Ruben and his team need to make sure it comes down
05:19in the right direction.
05:22Just try and lift it up the tree a bit.
05:26Happy?
05:27Yeah.
05:28I'll keep tension on it.
05:29So, basically, I'll cut part way through it, and then it's the pull of the county that makes it fall
05:35over, right?
05:37From his vintage fleet, Ruben's picked the county, a tractor with more than enough muscle to handle the mighty tree.
05:45That's hooked on.
05:47Operation Tree Fell is in business.
05:53Fire up, darling.
06:00Go on, set off.
06:01Just want to see how fast it is.
06:05Are you happy at that?
06:06Yeah.
06:07Keep going.
06:08Ten attention up.
06:16That'll do.
06:18Are you happy?
06:19Yeah.
06:20Shout at me when you're ready.
06:24So, I'm going to go down, make the first wedge, which will direct it, and then we'll pull it the
06:28last little bit.
06:29And timber.
06:30And big timber.
06:39So, we'll pull it, and see if we've sawed enough.
06:44Yeah.
06:45If it won't go, I'll saw a little bit more.
06:47Right.
06:49Ready?
06:50Ready?
06:50Yeah.
06:55The decades-old tractor has made easy work of that.
06:59Perfect, darling.
07:01Do you want to pull it off the fence now?
07:15Well done.
07:16Well done.
07:17Perfect, love.
07:18For Jess, it's more than just a day's work.
07:21She's as fond of these old machines as Reuben is.
07:25Well done, darling.
07:26That went well, didn't it?
07:27It did.
07:28It's a good way to do it.
07:29I actually really like that tractor.
07:30It's lovely to drive, isn't it?
07:32Would you say that's your favourite out of my collection?
07:35Probably, yeah.
07:35It's got lovely gears.
07:36I think the thing I like the most is when Jess likes them as well.
07:39Yeah.
07:40Then you know you're allowed to keep them.
07:41I think, yeah, because that county is now safe, that tractor.
07:46So, the next thing is we're going to sew it up.
08:08Well, I think I've just about got all the logs out there, Sonny, and I think the rest
08:11are just sticks.
08:13Yeah, definitely.
08:13For a bonfire.
08:16And, of course, the team makes sure to collect their well-earned bonus.
08:20Yeah.
08:20Put them in the trailer and take them back home.
08:23Yeah, definitely.
08:24There's just some final debris to clear before the trio can call it a day.
08:31We'll get these last logs round up and then that's the job done.
08:34Yeah.
08:38Ruben will be back in a few weeks to replace the fence, but for now, that's a job well
08:43done.
08:47I've very much enjoyed working with you guys.
08:49Yeah, it's been good fun, hasn't it?
08:51I've really enjoyed my day.
08:52Yeah.
08:52Well, bye.
08:54It's a nice part of the country, isn't it, to work in?
08:57It is, definitely, yeah.
08:58No, I'd rather be.
09:01Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
09:19Looming large on Ruben's list of autumn work is a job digging out rock from a Cumbrian farmer's
09:24quarry.
09:25And for this, Ruben needs specialist equipment.
09:33So, the next morning, the lads have met up with Jess's dad Dave in his yard and Ruben's
09:39in his element.
09:40Big day.
09:42New ties in the workplace.
09:43Great.
09:43I'm excited to use them.
09:45We've got new drills.
09:46And in true Ruben's style, why buy new when you can lovingly recycle relics from a bygone
09:52era?
09:53That one has come out of a coal mine that hasn't been used ever.
09:57Ever.
09:58Ever.
09:58Well, the coal mine closed in 1987.
10:03Yeah.
10:03This one, I don't know.
10:06Ruben's hoping these heavy-duty pneumatic drills will help deal with a particularly hard
10:11seam of rock at the quarry.
10:13We've been pecking away at it.
10:15It is sort of coming out, but it's so hard, I thought, why don't we try and break it off?
10:21Because if we could put a few cracks in it, we could rip it out with the digger.
10:25Yeah.
10:25I've always wanted to try and use that expanding grout.
10:28So we're going to drill down into it with these relics, put expanding grout in it, and
10:33hopefully, given a bit of time, it should pop the whole lump of stone off.
10:37That would be a good idea, to be honest.
10:38It's just interesting to see how we go.
10:40And I've always been interested in, like, mining and that sort of old stuff.
10:43Yeah, it's cool, isn't it?
10:44What are we actually going to be doing with it?
10:46Crushing it, or...?
10:47So, it depends how it comes out, really.
10:49The majority of it will be getting crushed.
10:51Right.
10:52Just to go on the farm tracks for the customer.
10:54But we are looking for some big square stones from round here to do a job making seats in a
11:00bit of a park local to Kirby Stephen.
11:02Right.
11:03It'll be a good learning curve, won't it?
11:05It will.
11:05Stook between a rock and a hard place.
11:07Mmm.
11:09It's been a while since these vintage rock drills have been used, so they'll need to
11:13be thoroughly tested.
11:14We're just waiting for Kappa, as always, to turn up with an air compressor.
11:18Have a trial run.
11:19And we'll have a sea when we get them running here.
11:21Once in a lifetime chance to actually use something like this, innit?
11:24Yeah.
11:24And if we get good at it, we might end up doing it more.
11:26And then we'll have some wanted digger.
11:28So, if it doesn't work, we'll get the fireworks off sunny.
11:32Yeah, fireworks off sunny.
11:34Fire in the hole.
11:35Yeah.
11:35I don't know.
11:37Before Dave has any more explosive ideas...
11:40Do you hear that racket?
11:42I don't.
11:42Someone bringing a lot of hot air.
11:44Kappa makes his appearance, squeakily.
11:49It doesn't look very big.
11:51We have air.
11:52You have brought the air.
11:53I have brought all the air.
11:55Right.
11:55Right.
11:56This is all the bits.
11:58So, we bought this drill and pipe and kit and all this ready to go and air kit.
12:02I've just been 80 mile round trip for it.
12:05So, I hope it works.
12:07I really do hope it works.
12:10With kit this old, there are no guarantees.
12:12I am slightly nervous, I'll be honest.
12:16Right.
12:17Let's rip.
12:17Right.
12:18Turn the compressor on.
12:19The compressor pumps pressurised air to the drill, giving it the power to break rock.
12:24Ready?
12:25Yeah.
12:30Yeah, boy.
12:32Yeah, dog.
12:33We have flow.
12:35So far, so good.
12:41Heyo.
12:44I think we might be here a while.
12:49But the compressed air doesn't seem to be powering the drill.
12:53Try it in.
12:54It hasn't got enough air.
12:56Do you want a bit of oil put in, trying to oil everything up?
13:00We're all right.
13:06I jumped out of his shit.
13:08What did you do?
13:10Well, it works.
13:11A bit.
13:12I think it's maybe stuck.
13:16I don't quite know what to think of this situation.
13:20It's pecking, but it's not spinny-spinny.
13:22It should do as a drill.
13:24The first drill switches on, but it's nowhere near as powerful as it should be.
13:28And that's a real head-scratcher.
13:31Well, let's try and get the other one going now.
13:32Yeah.
13:33Get it on the workbench.
13:34The second drill is seized up, so needs to be dismantled for a good clean.
13:39You know, it's a good job we didn't go straight to the quarry with these.
13:42It is, isn't it?
13:43I think we've been laughed at.
13:44See if that'll pull out.
13:45What?
13:46I'm trying.
13:48You got it now.
13:49Is it going?
13:50Yeah.
13:51There you go.
13:54Right, that's out.
13:57So them little fellas there, they'll have to move, won't they?
14:02It looks like it's spent its life in a pond.
14:05It's got some rust on it.
14:06It's a bit mucky, isn't it?
14:07Yeah.
14:08It's just rust, isn't it?
14:09Yeah.
14:10It hasn't been used for a long time and not all the little tabs that should move.
14:14I see it's solid, so nothing's moving.
14:17It looks in good nick though, everything inside it.
14:19Hopefully, a clean-out will solve the problem.
14:25Right, we're ready to go.
14:26Will it work, boys?
14:40In Dave's yard at Brough Castle, Ruben's new rock drills are causing problems.
14:46Why do I have to hold this?
14:47And an entire quarry job depends on getting them up to full power.
14:51I did have hope, but it's not looking that good at this moment in time.
14:57But mechanically-minded Kappa has spotted something.
15:00Hey, Ruben, I think I've found the problem.
15:04What?
15:05Turn the compressor up.
15:08What's up?
15:08What does that thing need to power?
15:10PSI?
15:11120.
15:12Well, the most we're getting is 35.
15:15There's the problem.
15:17There's 160 on gauge.
15:19Yes!
15:20I was having it flat out though.
15:22That should have more flow than that, shouldn't it?
15:26With the air pressure far less than it should be, the compressor is the confirmed spanner in the works.
15:31Right, so we need to source a bigger compressor and then we're all good to go.
15:36On that note, let's have a tidy up.
15:44Late autumn at Brough Castle means breeding time for the rams, also known as tups.
15:50So at first light, Dave's ready to crack on.
15:53And as he helped Ruben with the drills, it's now Ruben's turn to muck in.
15:59Right, so this morning we're letting the tups out.
16:01Yeah.
16:03Well, what we do is we always put a couple of tups out together just to be sure that they're
16:07in lamb, don't we?
16:09And there's a colourful way for Dave and Jess to have a clear countdown to lambing time.
16:14We have harnesses to put on.
16:16Yeah.
16:16We've got the yellow crayon on because that's the first one for the first cycle, isn't it?
16:20Yeah.
16:20After 21 days you change colour, put a darker colour on.
16:23By changing the colour of the crayon on the tups every three weeks, Dave and Jess can tell exactly when
16:29the ewes mated and when their lambs are due.
16:33This is the hardest bit, putting the harnesses on, because they've got to hold them still.
16:38The tups have had a good rest this summer.
16:41They're looking in good condition, so they should be really fertile.
16:44And yeah, they've got to go to work.
16:45They've got a job to do and let them get on with it.
16:49Oh well, shall we get these harnesses put on then and let them out?
16:51Yeah, let's get on.
16:53So I haven't really harnessed up a sheep before, I'll be honest.
16:56He may be a shepherd's son raised among thousands of sheep, but this is a first.
17:01One needs to go straight over and one needs to cross over.
17:04Have you guys grown since last year?
17:08They definitely have, meaning the old harnesses need a refit, turning a simple job into a bit of a puzzle.
17:16Now that one, does that cross over?
17:19Yeah.
17:19One goes straight over his bag, the other two cross over.
17:22Although veteran farmer Dave has hardly broken a sweat.
17:25Mine's done.
17:27Mine's ready to go, my boy.
17:29Clip it on, Jess, and then tighten them up one at a time.
17:31Right.
17:32Happy?
17:33Oh yeah, it's alright, actually.
17:35Right, who's next?
17:36Now they've got the hang of it, there's no stopping them.
17:40That's what it looks like.
17:42Yeah, that's perfect.
17:43It's not too tight, is it?
17:45Right, you're done.
17:46Go on.
17:47Go on.
17:48This is the big boy.
17:52Hey, watch out Jess, you're in his firing line there.
17:56He's got sass.
17:58So I'll let these out, Jess.
18:00Bring them four in.
18:07Come on.
18:08Come on, little guy.
18:09This is a nice boy, aren't you?
18:11With the last of the eight tups harnessed up to their yellow crayons…
18:16Come on!
18:17Come on!
18:18Come on!
18:18It's time to load and deliver them to the waiting ewes.
18:22Come on!
18:24Come on!
18:26Come on!
18:27Come on!
18:29Come on!
18:30Come on!
18:31It's time to load and deliver them to the waiting ewes.
18:36with Ruben due at the quarry Jess and Dave will take it from here right I'm gonna go check on
18:41Sonny and Kappa thank you for helping put them on no problem see you guys later in a bit bye
18:53there are four flocks to cover ranging from 30 to 150 ewes each and Dave and Jess are starting
19:00at the upper field with all their rams to choose from right which two do you want to let out
19:05of
19:06here dad a couple of strong ones because we're a bit a bit colder up here innit him there yeah
19:12it's a big one and him at the back this higher rougher ground is exposed to the harshest weather
19:17so only the biggest tucks have the stamina to cover the ewes right this one Jess yeah that's a good
19:23one else about that one yeah you ready yeah ready right let them go that's it that'll do look at
19:36him stood there she's showing off now he's a beast so far the ewes are being elusive go on boys
19:50oh there we are oh there what's this job oh now they're running there's lamb number one
20:02one down 349 to go gosh we've got to be lambing fairly quick at this rate dad yeah
20:13oh well should we get the rest of the boys out yeah before they escape look they're all looking
20:17out of the trailer a bit of jealousy going on there while Dave and Jess head off to release the
20:28final
20:28tops Ruben Sonny and Kappa have arrived at the quarry oh here we go Sonny this is the uh the
20:39victim
20:40Ruben wants to show them the seam of dense bluestone their drills need to conquer this is the hardest
20:47layer of stone in the quarry underneath isn't too bad but this top strip is incredible so if we can
20:53drill through it yeah and make a dent and make a dent Jess is bringing the bigger compressor so
20:59hopefully that'll make our drills work much easier look at the thickness of the band of rock it's a
21:06daunting task so everything hinges on the bigger compressor delivering
21:14here she is having finished releasing the tops Jess has picked up a hopefully fully functioning
21:21compressor to unleash full drill power yeah I've got it
21:29they'll need all the oomph they can get to make a dent in that seam of bluestone big and on
21:34first the
21:35team have two jobs to tackle quarrying the large block for seating and crushing smaller pieces into
21:41aggregate for the farmers paths so far we've quarried all the way up to here but this is really really
21:47hard we're just going to try and drill it crack it and then it'd be easier to pull off hopefully
21:53we'll find
21:54out I've never done this before you ready good
22:25I'm scared before things set off
22:32the new compressor ought to do the trick once Kappa's pulse settles
22:48at a local farmers quarry where Cumbria borders the dales Ruben and his team are ready to excavate the
22:55seam of incredibly hard bluestone let's get some safety stuff on yeah I work out where I want our holes
23:02and
23:04set away drilling to shear off one clean block the holes for the expanding grout must be plotted carefully
23:11right there
23:17that's a little star what shall I do this time just
23:21so what normal than we actually know that's precision drill hole planning with a side of artistic flair
23:35this is 30 what do you think you draw the pig
23:38there's a cow it's 30 that's a pig why is it a pig it's got a snout
23:42please just appreciate my cow Sonny I'm trying my best
23:46let me show you how to draw a cow drawing competition
23:54what's a cow
23:57yeah I need to put a tail
23:59you can't say a man looks like a pig
24:06that looks more like a pig than mine
24:10that looks like a pig
24:14despite growing up surrounded by cattle neither of them seem to understand what a cow looks like
24:19that's a five-legged sausage
24:23that's artwork that
24:27with the drill holes imaginatively marked thoughts turn to the gang's bonfire night plans
24:33so I hear you've been there shopping for some fireworks Sonny for the bonfire
24:37yeah I went and picked a few up there's quite a lot
24:40how many have you got
24:42hundreds
24:43hundreds how are we going to be on all night
24:46we can go home they're all massive rockets
24:48yeah and then hopefully this will go for the bang as well
24:51I hope so
24:52I think Ruben will be generally heartbroken if this doesn't work
25:02right there's a toffee
25:04oh that looks lovely
25:05yeah
25:06over at Brough Castle
25:07preparations for tomorrow night's celebrations have begun in earnest
25:11right who wants to do the toffee ones then
25:14can I have some apples do you think
25:16oh my gosh these are your apples so these ones are for doing the chocolate
25:21making these seasonal sweet treats is a family tradition with Nana Diane
25:26Mum Sarah and Jess's sisters Eva and Amelia getting stuck in to help
25:32I'm dipping them all the way in I'm going for it Amelia
25:35just let it roll roll it round and round so the toffee runs round it
25:40not like that
25:40yeah
25:41and there's more than just toffee apples on the menu
25:44hot dogs we're having and onions
25:47oh lovely and I've got the fudge all done and cinder toffee
25:51oh lovely
25:51yeah so it's all the traditions that we've always done every year
25:56so there's no fear of anyone going hungry then
25:59are you looking forward to the fireworks
26:02well they're quite loud aren't they but yeah
26:04they're nice to watch
26:05yeah I like them loud
26:07louder the better for me
26:09I do think
26:09how do you think Reuben and Sonny will do letting the fireworks off in the castle then
26:14it's probably just as well it's a ruin beforehand
26:16yeah
26:18I think they'll do a good job
26:20yeah
26:20I'm looking forward to it I think it's exciting
26:23yeah
26:23well when I was little
26:24I can remember a massive big bonfire being organised
26:28and I think they'd spent thousands of pounds in those days
26:31on fireworks for this display
26:33when a spark of the first one got in the box
26:36and the whole lot went off together
26:40yeah
26:40it was a tremendous noise
26:43it was absolutely beautiful
26:47hopefully Reuben and Sonny won't adopt the same tactic
26:54right then everyone
26:55how's it looking up there
26:57Sonny was the one with the tape measure I was marking
26:59like this here
27:00look at my cow
27:03aww
27:03right
27:03and then this is for you Root
27:06aww
27:06I love you too
27:13on that note
27:13and with only an hour of daylight left
27:16they need to get drilling
27:24Ruben's restored vintage drills are working a treat
27:28I can't believe how good it is
27:34powered by the new compressor
27:36that bluestone may as well be butter
27:39here we are
27:45that was pretty impressive
27:50and as the sun sets on the quarry
27:52that's it
27:54it's all been
27:55it's going to be dark soon
27:56the gang need all the light they can get
27:59because Ruben is determined to finish phase one of the job by nightfall
28:11well we're getting on quite well
28:12I don't think many people will be out this time of night drilling a hole in the dark
28:16but I think they're doing a last hole now and then we'll finish
28:27well that went well
28:28we're all drilled up
28:29so I'm guessing tomorrow we're just going to put the expanding grout in
28:32yeah tomorrow we'll put the expanding stuff in
28:34bonfire night as well
28:35tomorrow
28:36so there'll be plenty of explosions going on if this doesn't go down
28:41so let's gather up our bits and go yum
28:44till tomorrow
28:45that'll do
28:51in the Brough Castle kitchen
28:52there are more chocolate and toffee apples
28:54than you can shake a sparkler at
28:57does that look okay
28:59would you eat that
29:01oh yeah
29:04and while most of the family are making the treats as delicious as possible
29:08nine-year-old Eva has other ideas
29:13Ruben likes onions isn't he
29:16are you going to pull a joke on him
29:18he pranked me he said I'm going to put you in a bin
29:20right so you're going to pull a plank on him and do an onion for him as a toffee apple
29:23it's going to be lovely
29:25well I think this is the first I've never ever seen
29:29a chocolate covered onion
29:31ever
29:32I know he's going to get a real surprise isn't he there
29:35yes
29:36sprinkle a sprinkle
29:37actually it doesn't look any different to the others does it
29:40no
29:41poor Ruben
29:44well that'll be a new memory for his bonfire night won't it
29:47and he's going to get a real shock isn't he
29:50he bites into that
29:52oh Eva you're cruel
29:55now that'll teach him not to throw me in the bin
30:10so once we mix this we've only got five minutes to get it in the hole
30:14early the next morning it's time for phase two of Ruben's quarrying experiment
30:19so I think we'll mix two bags first
30:23and see how far that gets us
30:25if the expanding grout does its job and pops the blue stone clean off
30:29it'll save a huge amount of time and hard labour
30:34I've always wanted to try this because we only quarry this now and again for the farmer
30:37there's no point in getting a huge digger here
30:39so we'll just mind you what we got
30:41hopefully be able to pop this rock face off
30:45right
30:46so can you guys go up there take the caps off the holes and make sure there's no dust or
30:51stone or rubbish that'll fall in
30:53yeah
30:53and we'll mix first lot
30:55it's alright five minutes is a long time
30:57yeah
31:01they have to work quickly once the grout's mixed there's just five minutes before it starts to set
31:08quite impressed seeing the holes in daylight now
31:10like it's still a tidy job like it
31:13yeah
31:13here we go
31:16bucket number one
31:18now it's a race against the clock
31:20are we ready?
31:21yeah
31:21right here we go
31:24hole number one
31:28how much we're supposed to put in?
31:30to the top aren't you?
31:31to the top?
31:34as the grout expands in each two meter deep hole it'll generate over 800 kilos of pressure per square centimeter
31:41hopefully enough force to split the rock without explosives
31:48even though the chemical cracking agent starts to work in a few hours splitting tough rock like this could take
31:54several days
31:54and even then there are no guarantees
31:59it's already changing isn't it?
32:00mmm
32:00yeah it's gone to rubber
32:04if this works well we'll come back drill the hole the rest of it and pop it all out
32:10yeah
32:10yeah
32:12hopefully it goes off to a bank
32:13it'll be a bit of a racket when it goes you wouldn't you thought?
32:15if it goes off tonight at eight o'clock we'll be watching our fireworks won't we?
32:18yeah
32:19explosions are round
32:20yeah
32:23I'm really confident
32:23you know we've done a really good job of drilling
32:25the drill holes are perfect
32:27we mixed it up right and it's in the holes
32:29I have full confidence it'll work
32:33see what happens
32:34something's gonna happen
32:35bang!
32:36laughing
32:38laughing
32:38laughing
32:39laughing
32:42laughing
32:53right so here we are we drilled the holes put the grout in and we'll see whether it's done anything
32:59bright and early the next morning Reuben and Jess are heading back to the quarry to see if the expanding
33:04grout has cracked the rock
33:06yeah fingers crossed
33:07fingers crossed
33:08it has worked
33:12it's the moment of truth
33:14there's some bigger cracks in it I think
33:16yeah I think that one there's new isn't it
33:18it hasn't really just disappeared into little bits has it
33:21no
33:22it's not done what we hoped has it
33:24yet
33:24no
33:24not yet
33:25should we have a look at the tops
33:27yeah let's wander up
33:34well
33:35it has sort of worked look at them cracks
33:38that one there
33:40in my hole
33:40yeah because that's where the hole is isn't it
33:42there's another one there
33:43so I think
33:46hey look another
33:47oh yeah
33:48it's pretty cool isn't it
33:49so I think we're not far off mastering this technique
33:53that is great
33:54I bet that will peel straight off with the dig up
33:56so it has worked then hasn't it
33:58yeah it has actually worked
33:59I didn't think it had worked when I got here
34:01so the technique shows a glimmer of promise
34:05what we need to do I think we need to come
34:07and do another section
34:09and another section
34:11yeah
34:11until the hole thing's got loads of little cracks in
34:13then when I get the ripper in there
34:15it'll just pull straight out
34:17yeah it'll save a lot of time won't it
34:18the closer holes at the top have worked best
34:20the biggest crack
34:21so I think we measure that distance
34:23and stick to that distance
34:24yeah
34:24but knowing you
34:26if you mark it out
34:27it'll all pop
34:28and then there'll be a cow shaped rock
34:30up here at the bottom
34:34yeah well it's worked
34:35it's cracked through the top
34:37so the signs are good
34:38I mean
34:38the next thing is to get a digger here
34:40with a rock spike
34:41and see if we can pull the lump off
34:43which I think it'll peel straight off
34:45but I think there's a lot of holes to drill
34:48a lot of holes to drill
34:51cracking job
34:52cracking job
34:52I like that
34:53go on let's get back down
34:54alright
35:04over at Brough Castle
35:05bonfire night preparations are underway
35:10right
35:11so
35:11I'm going to make the guy
35:13I reckon I'm going to make it that good of it
35:15I won't want to burn it
35:15so can someone hold it there
35:17whilst I get the screw machine
35:18do you want the hole in the jeans
35:19hang on are you all twisted
35:20hang on
35:21it's pulling out
35:21who's holding the wood
35:22it seems to be a complicated five person job
35:25let go of your hand here in
35:26it wants pulling across
35:28I've got it here
35:29if you let go
35:29pull the sleeve out
35:30keep going
35:31keep going
35:31right up to I think maybe
35:33yeah
35:33he's a tall guy
35:36tall handsome
35:36and surprisingly well dressed
35:40dad's best boiler suit
35:41he does know we're burning his clothes
35:43don't think mum's informed him of that
35:46oh
35:48right Eve
35:48are you ready if we hold it
35:50can you shove it all in
35:52try
35:52grab a
35:53grab a big
35:54arm full of hair
35:55Eve
35:56so write down the arms if you can Eve
35:59little bits at a time
36:00yeah maybe
36:00alright we'll stick with that
36:01oh
36:02did you just break it
36:04can I have a screw machine please
36:05his head's loose
36:06if you're squeamish look away
36:08don't look
36:16is surgery completed
36:17nearly is
36:18lovely stuff
36:19look at that
36:21his head might be reattached
36:23but he's still a little blue in the face
36:27we'll just put his trousers on
36:29they're fair fancy them jeans
36:30have you had a look at them
36:31fashionable when dad was young I think
36:34look at the buttons on him
36:35Dave will have no clothes left at this rate
36:38dad was a cool dude wasn't he
36:39hopefully they'll flip round my waist
36:41back in my day
36:43back in short
36:43couldn't they
36:45can you say about Bill
36:46they've got no flex
36:49they've got no movement whatsoever
36:54I'll still take you down
36:55I don't want to get a big break
37:03you wait until I get my jeans pulled up
37:06look back
37:09while Sonny wrestles
37:10Dave's jeans back off
37:12the guy is starting to take shape
37:14We're getting there Reeves aren't we
37:15What you think?
37:17You look in the business
37:19Right
37:20boom
37:22yep
37:24My brother from another mother
37:26Are we going to bother with the jeans
37:28do you think?
37:29We'll have a go
37:31Are we going to go on?
37:34I got further than this, Jesus.
37:37Breathe in, son, breathe in.
37:39Wow, look at that.
37:40That is, what the hell even was in his fashion sense?
37:43It may not be the high-vis chic Ruben's used to,
37:47but with his jeans finally on, dapper guy is ready.
37:51I think he looks good, doesn't he?
37:52What do you think?
37:53I think he's perfect.
37:54I reckon he looks well.
37:55Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
37:56Well done, everyone.
37:57I think we need to just go get this bonfire set up,
37:59and then we're done.
38:02Right, guy, you come with me.
38:09Before the guy can take pride of place...
38:11Steady!
38:14..they need a bonfire.
38:16Keep going.
38:18Hiya.
38:22Are you all out?
38:23Yeah, you're all good.
38:25Whoa!
38:27But with Jess on tractor duty
38:29and the spare branches from the logging job,
38:31it's ready in no time.
38:35Well, it's a nice big fire, isn't it?
38:37Yeah, well done, darling.
38:38So, do you want to grab the guy,
38:39and then once the guy's on,
38:40we can tell your family to come?
38:42Yeah.
38:44Here we go.
38:46This is David's trousers on.
38:50Sonny's donated his good hat.
38:52So, Sid, you're the lightest.
38:54Would you like to climb on the top?
38:56Ow!
38:57The head.
38:57That wasn't my fault.
38:58You walked into that.
39:00With a last swipe from Guy,
39:02he's added to the pyre,
39:03with some help from Ruben's little brother.
39:06Careful.
39:07Right, go on, Sid.
39:09Yep.
39:11Right.
39:12Right, I'm going to pass you up.
39:13You've got to give him a cuddle.
39:15Don't.
39:15Pull the arm off.
39:17Don't lose his hat.
39:18It's all right.
39:18Don't, Sid.
39:19Remember, is that hat?
39:20Maybe in the middle.
39:22Yeah, there.
39:22Facing this way.
39:23Perfect.
39:24Amazing.
39:24Oh.
39:25Right, then.
39:26Wow.
39:27So, the guy's in place now.
39:28We're just waiting for the family to come,
39:30and then we can light the bonfire, can't we?
39:32Looks well, that.
39:32Well done, everyone.
39:33It's really good, doesn't it?
39:40With autumn's hard work behind them,
39:42bonfire night brings Ruben's friends and family together
39:45to celebrate a job well done.
39:47Where's the guy come from?
39:49Eva helped with that.
39:50Where did you get them jeans from?
39:53The one I'm worried is, where did you get them jeans?
39:57They're my pulling jeans.
39:59Have you ever seen jeans like that before?
40:02Yes, in my cupboard.
40:03Yeah, well, not anymore.
40:07Do you want to do the honours?
40:09Let's get it lit.
40:10Yes.
40:16Is that meant to be hair?
40:18Yeah, but we use the mouldy hair,
40:20so from a fiery squint, it's mint, I'd say.
40:25There we are.
40:26Right, she's away.
40:27There we go, we're lit.
40:28Well done, it's brilliant.
40:31Look at the guy.
40:32It looks like that person of the avatar, doesn't it?
40:35Oh, wow.
40:37Even Sonny's hat and the mouldy hay hair
40:40hasn't disguised Guy's bright blue features.
40:46It's lovely to see the bonfire tradition carrying on
40:50because there's been a bonfire here every year
40:53for the last 60 years, ever since I came to Brookcastle.
40:59The bonfire is burning nicely,
41:01along with Dave's old denim.
41:04They were my favourite jeans.
41:05And they're still fit you, don't they, do they?
41:08Same size I was when I was 18.
41:10Yeah.
41:11You're not getting them back now, Dad?
41:12No, I don't know, I don't know.
41:16Beautiful, the flames and that.
41:18Oh, hellish, I'd stand here on that, couldn't you?
41:20Yeah, you could.
41:23It's crazy, isn't it?
41:24Not many things stand the test of time,
41:27but if you think this tradition of Guy Fawkes
41:30has been going on for hundreds and hundreds of years
41:32and we're still celebrating it now.
41:34Yeah, just differently now with fireworks and food, isn't it?
41:37Yeah.
41:45Right, guys, we've got toffee apples or chocolate-covered apples.
41:48You can choose which we'd like.
41:50A toffee apple, if you've got good, strong teeth, yeah?
41:54You can have a toffee one, yes, just get one, yeah.
41:57Oh, Reuben, Eve has got a special one for you.
42:00She's made that one herself.
42:01Thank you very much, Eve.
42:02Anybody want a toffee apple?
42:04Oh, wow, that looks really good.
42:06Yeah, special for you.
42:08Thank you very much, Eve.
42:09Make a lot of lovely hair.
42:11That is amazing.
42:14Big bite.
42:22Does it taste okay, Reuben?
42:24Is it pickled onion?
42:31It's in disguise.
42:41That was because you threw her in the bin the other day.
42:46Are we even now?
42:47No.
42:50What, do you like a chocolate one now, Reuben?
42:52You can have, yeah.
42:54Can I have a toffee one?
42:55Thank you very much, everyone.
42:56This has been brilliant.
42:57These are safe, Reuben.
42:58Yeah.
43:01Armed with a tastier treat, a happier Reuben reflects on a successful autumn in the Dales.
43:08Another season over.
43:10Tups are out now, so it's really getting towards the back end.
43:12Not this long before it's snow.
43:15It's been a really good year.
43:16Thank you very much, everyone.
43:17So, warmed up, well fed, and with a few scores settled, it's time for the main event.
43:24There you are.
43:25Wow.
43:27Wow.
43:31Wow.
43:47Brilliant, aren't they?
43:49Oh.
43:50Oh.
43:51Oh.
43:54Yeah.
43:55Absolutely.
43:56Oh.
43:57Yeah.
44:01Oh.
44:02Oh.
44:02Oh.
44:02Oh.
44:02Happy Lumpire Night.
44:03Happy Lumpire Night, Reuben.
44:12Next time, the friends take on a delicate operation.
44:16We need to be very careful.
44:17Sadly, this tree has landed on some of these graves.
44:21Reuben gets a new toy.
44:23Do you like your bulldozer?
44:24Brilliant.
44:25It's really fast at levelling.
44:27And it's saved by the bell.
44:30When Brough's quaint village church needs an urgent repair.
44:34But will the young couple's quick fix ring true?
44:38Let's hope it's in the right place.
44:40If it's not in the right place, it won't go on.
44:59Let's hope it's in the right place.
45:03Let's hope it's in the right place.
45:03See you next time.
45:03Bye.
45:03Bye.
45:04Bye.
45:04Bye.
45:09Bye.
45:10Bye.
45:11Bye.
