00:01Hi everyone! Welcome back to a new tutorial on how to use a breast pump effectively and comfortably.
00:08Whether you're pumping to relieve engorgement, make a stash or feed your baby while you're away, preparation is everything.
00:18Today, I'll walk you through the basics of using a manual breast pump.
00:23This one is by Lanseneau. I really like this one and as you can tell, it's been used a lot.
00:31Do check your own model's manual because the details can vary a little bit.
00:36Now, let's begin. Start by having your hands washed completely.
00:41I like to wash them for about 20 seconds with warm soapy water just to make sure that no germs
00:48get into the milk and keep everything safe and clean.
00:53Next, assemble your pump.
00:56I've got all the parts right here and I make sure that they're properly screwed so that we don't have
01:06any milk leaking.
01:09Next, I'm going to pick the right size flange.
01:15This pump comes with two different sizes so be sure to check what works for you because if you have
01:22the wrong size, it can hurt a little bit.
01:25You want to make sure that the nipple can move around freely inside the flange and it's not touching the
01:30sides.
01:32The first time you use it, you should test it out.
01:39I'm going to try out the small one first and then the bigger one.
01:48When I compare them, the bigger one sits a little bit more comfortably on the breast, giving a little bit
01:54more space for suction.
02:05Make sure your pump is fully assembled and then find a nice and comfortable place to sit.
02:14It's important for milk flow that you are relaxed and comfortable.
02:21I'm going to start pumping by placing the flange over the nipple, creating a good tight seal.
02:35Then, I'm going to start pumping quickly.
02:39On electrical pumps, this is called stimulation mode.
02:44This is to stimulate let down, which is when the milk starts flowing.
02:56Once you see a spray or a steady flow, you can switch to expression mode.
03:02These are longer but comfortable pumps.
03:14Pumping should never hurt.
03:15If it hurts, you might have the wrong size flange or the wrong settings on your electrical pump.
03:23Be sure to double check it.
03:28If you're having trouble getting milk out, you can lean slightly forward while you pump.
03:37You can also use a warm compress on your breast or massage your breasts while you're pumping.
03:44This is called hands-on pumping and can be quite effective to get the milk out.
03:54Pumping should take about 15 to 20 minutes, but the right time is whatever feels right for you.
04:17You can stop pumping once the flow starts to slow down and your breast feels noticeably softer.
04:26Switch off your pump and release the flange from your nipple like so.
04:44Next, take your milk and put it in a clean container or bottle and label it with the date.
04:53After that, make sure that everything is cleaned properly.
04:58Rinse every part that came into contact with the milk and then wash it in its own dedicated basin.
05:06Not in the sink to avoid germs.
05:10After washing it with warm soap and water, warm water and soap, then you let it air dry on a
05:19clean dish towel.
05:21Don't use the dish towel to dry it, just let it air dry.
05:25After that, make sure that you disinfect it.
05:28It should be disinfected at least once a day.
05:32You can do this by boiling or using steam or using disposable microwave bags.
05:40That's really all there is to it.
05:43Practice the pumping and it will become second nature.
05:46If you still have trouble with let down, feel free to contact a lactation consultant.
05:52They'll be happy to help you further.
05:55If you would like to try this specific pump, check my bio because I have it down there in the
