00:00Every year, I receive an unmarked envelope on Halloween.
00:13I can't stand Halloween.
00:15Whenever October rolls around, I get a sinking feeling in my stomach that doesn't go away until the month is
00:22over.
00:22And sometimes, not until December.
00:26Most people I tell this to are quick to label me as a cranky, bonafide Halloween time Ebeneezer Scrooge, telling
00:33me to just lighten up and enjoy the spooky season.
00:37That is, until I explain why.
00:40When I reveal my reasoning as to why I can't stand the holiday, suddenly, my disdain makes a lot more
00:47sense.
00:48For the past 11 years, on the morning of October 31st, I have received a photograph of a dead body.
00:56Always by mail, always in the morning, and always on Halloween.
01:01It does not matter if I move, if I change my name, or even if the mail is intercepted.
01:08One way or another, I will receive this unwanted Halloween trick.
01:13I don't know why they are sent, I don't know who is sending them, and I don't know why I,
01:20of all people, am their target.
01:22The only thing I know is that I receive them, and that I have to view them.
01:28This all started 11 years ago, when I first moved out of my parents' house and into a new place
01:34with my best friend at the time, Astrid.
01:37We were both 19, and more than a little eager to get our first taste of adult life that only
01:43came with not living with our parents.
01:46Don't get me wrong, my folks are great, but I was ready to move on and begin the next chapter
01:51in my life.
01:53Astrid's reasoning was, comparatively, a bit more sour.
01:57She was just looking for any excuse to no longer share a roof with the drunk, gaslighting prick that was
02:03her father.
02:04When we first moved in, things were fine.
02:07The apartment was small, but not falling apart.
02:10The neighborhood was close to a discount grocery store, we both had stable enough employment,
02:15and the rent was actually fairly reasonable for two young college kids.
02:20It was far from perfect, but it was serviceable and affordable, and when you're just starting out, those are borderline
02:28luxuries.
02:29The worst thing that happened in those first few weeks was our sink suddenly began leaking,
02:35and even then we were able to get our elderly neighbor to fix it for us.
02:39The guy was so nice, he refused to let us pay him,
02:42and even when we tried leaving an envelope with some money in his mailbox,
02:46we just found it slipped right back under our door the morning after.
02:50All this to say that we were happy, we were content, and we were comfortable.
02:56The first picture arrived the same year we moved in.
03:00We had been living in our apartment for about four months now,
03:04enough time to acquaint ourselves with the neighbors,
03:07get a stable routine going, and get the place actually feeling like home.
03:12Astrid and I had divided the chores and responsibilities,
03:16and one of mine was checking the mail.
03:19Most days, that just meant bills, credit card offers, catalogs for stores,
03:25and maybe the odd collection of coupons for any number of fast food places.
03:31On that Halloween morning, however, while shuffling through the assortment of useless junk,
03:36I found a plain white envelope.
03:40I immediately knew that something was up with the letter,
03:43as there was no post markings anywhere on the envelope, not even a stamp.
03:47The only thing on it were two words,
03:50crudely written in plain black ink, with what looked to be shaky handwriting.
03:55To Jennifer.
03:58Immediately curious, I set down the rest of the mail
04:02when I got back to the apartment and opened the envelope.
04:05Inside was a carefully folded digital photo of a woman,
04:10maybe my age,
04:12lying with her eyes closed on a bed with a green comforter
04:15in a near-pitch black room.
04:18The woman's frame was illuminated by the glow of what I can only assume was a camera flash,
04:24revealing dark black hair and a peaceful expression on her face.
04:29I didn't know she was dead at the time, so I was more confused than anything.
04:34Turning the photo over a few times to see if I was missing anything.
04:38But no, there was no date.
04:41No inscription that might have labeled some specific event.
04:45Nothing.
04:46From the looks of it, it was just an odd photo of what I thought was a sleeping woman that
04:50I didn't recognize.
04:52Okay.
04:54Weird.
04:55Weird.
04:55I said to myself,
04:57What's weird?
04:59Astrid's voice startled me,
05:01almost causing me to jump as I turned around to face her.
05:04My friend was still in pajama pants and the tank top,
05:07with her raven black hair tied up in a bun behind her head.
05:11This photo.
05:12Do you know the girl in this picture?
05:14I asked.
05:16Astrid raised an eyebrow as I held out the picture for her to take,
05:20which she did.
05:21She stared at the photo for a bit, turning it and squinting as she did.
05:26Eventually, she pursed her lips as she shook her head.
05:29Never seen it before.
05:30Why?
05:31She asked.
05:32Because this just came for me in the mail.
05:35I held up the empty envelope as I answered her,
05:38positioning it so she could see my name on the paper.
05:41She stared at it for a minute, then back at the photo in clear confusion.
05:46She's not a friend of yours?
05:47She asked.
05:48I shook my head.
05:50Can you just send it back?
05:52To where?
05:53I asked back, holding the envelope up again.
05:57There isn't even a return address on this thing.
06:00Where would I send it?
06:02Astrid just shrugged.
06:04After a few minutes of baffled back and forth,
06:07we ultimately decided that the letter was probably just some weird holiday prank,
06:11and agreed to put the matter behind us.
06:14In hindsight, I know that was a mistake,
06:17but that is 2020, as they say.
06:20The rest of the year passed without incident,
06:23and by Thanksgiving, while I hadn't forgotten the mystery photo,
06:27I had stopped worrying about it.
06:29Most of the next year was equally uneventful,
06:33aside for both of us trying desperately to avoid the angry,
06:37drunken phone calls of Astrid's father,
06:39demanding she come home.
06:41By Halloween the following year,
06:44I had almost completely disregarded the photo.
06:47I know that sounds kind of absurd,
06:49but I honestly thought it was just some kind of weird prank at the time.
06:53I mean, one odd photo on Halloween,
06:56a day second only to April Fool's for pranks and tricks,
07:00does not a red flag make.
07:01No, that red flag would start to raise a year later,
07:06when, after bringing in the mail and sitting down with Astrid,
07:10we discovered another plain blank envelope,
07:13save for my name.
07:15For a moment, neither of us said anything,
07:18or even really reacted at all to the postage.
07:21I obviously can't speak for Astrid,
07:24but I was just too stunned in the moment to think,
07:27let alone speak.
07:29When I finally did think,
07:30it was only in the form of a single question.
07:33Another one of these things?
07:35Astrid asked as she picked up the envelope
07:37and twirled it in her fingers.
07:39As I snapped out of my daze and glanced up at her,
07:43I wondered if she was aware that
07:44she had just vocalized my own question.
07:47Yeah, looks like it.
07:49I replied I had tried to sound dismissive
07:52as if the second letter didn't bother me at all,
07:55as if its mere presence hadn't stunned my roommate
07:58and me into silence only a few moments ago.
08:01Thankfully, Astrid didn't seem to notice my effort
08:05and casually tossed the envelope back on the table.
08:08And you still have no idea who might have sent it?
08:11She asked as she leaned back and crossed her arms.
08:15I looked back at the envelope,
08:16trying my best to recognize the handwriting
08:19as I thought through any prankster friends
08:21or weird neighbors who could have left it.
08:24While we had discussed possible culprits
08:27for the Mystery Mail a few times over the past year,
08:30it was never to a very deep or dedicated extent.
08:35Probably because of that,
08:37we never actually came up with any solid guesses.
08:40After sitting for maybe a minute,
08:42I realized I still didn't.
08:44Not a one.
08:46I admitted, still more confused than I was scared.
08:50I picked up the envelope and carefully began to open it.
08:54You're actually going to open that thing?
08:56Astrid asked with half a chuckle.
08:58I only replied with a shrug as I pulled out
09:01what looked to be another folded piece of paper.
09:03However, I half expected to see another random sleeping person.
09:08What I saw instead made my heart drop.
09:11The second photo depicted a Hispanic-looking man
09:15as he lay on his belly atop what looked to be old carpet.
09:19The man's hands and arms were outstretched across the floor.
09:24His face turned to the side and noticeably pale.
09:28That's not to say his face was completely colorless
09:31as there was a massive purple and pinkish bruise on the side of his face.
09:36Most alarming of all was what looked to be a crimson pool of blood under the man's head
09:41and a dried stream of red dripping from his nose.
09:45I'm not sure if I can accurately describe what I felt as fear.
09:49I was shocked, absolutely, and definitely a little disgusted.
09:53I suppose the best way to describe my exact feeling in the moment
09:57is to say I felt threatened.
09:59Maybe that's why I reflexively threw the photo onto the table.
10:03Ew, ew, ew, what in God's name is that?
10:06I shrieked as I flailed my hands like they'd actually touched a stranger's viscera.
10:11The picture, as if it somehow knew I didn't want to see it,
10:15flipped in the air as it gently floated towards the table,
10:19landing face down as it came to a stop.
10:22It was only after the photo was out of my hands
10:25that I started having any coherent thoughts,
10:28though even that was just panicked questions.
10:32Was the man dead?
10:33Why was he dead?
10:34Who had taken this picture?
10:36Was it legitimate or still a prank?
10:39Above all else, though, all I could muster in my head was
10:43why, why, why, why?
10:46Seeing my undignified freakout,
10:49Astrid got a curious look in her eye and took the photo off the table,
10:52wincing and scrunching her face once she looked at it.
10:56Ugh, that's gnarly.
10:58She said in a disgusted tone,
11:01Gnarly.
11:02I asked, stupefied that she could be so calm.
11:06Astrid, is that a real dead body?
11:09My friend, no doubt sensing my distress,
11:12looked up at me with a mix of sympathy and a,
11:15what I can only describe as a,
11:16did you really just ask that, look.
11:19Jen, it's not a dead body.
11:21She'd sounded certain when she said it, almost admonishing.
11:24Like I was an idiot for even considering the idea.
11:29If I'd been in my right mind,
11:31I'm sure I would have been offended that she'd been so dismissive.
11:34In that moment, however, my mind was a mess.
11:38How do you know?
11:40How do you know?
11:42Panic rising, I pressed my hands to my head,
11:45suddenly feeling very light of breath and like I was going to pass out.
11:50Without even realizing it, I had begun to spiral.
11:54I pictured some shadow of a man bursting into our apartment,
11:57approaching me slowly and doing some unspeakable things to me.
12:01No, no, no, no, please, no.
12:05What if there's like a serial killer running around
12:07and he's taking like these weird photos of his victims?
12:12What if I'm next?
12:13What if?
12:14Suddenly, I felt one of my hands be gently pulled away from my head,
12:18a comforting warmth placed on top of it.
12:20Go, breathe.
12:22Just breathe and calm down.
12:25Astrid said, cutting me off.
12:27Her voice was still stern,
12:29but now had taken on an unmistakable soothing tone.
12:33Placing my free hand over my beating chest,
12:36I tried to compose myself as I looked at my friend,
12:39my eyes cladding up as I had realized I'd begun crying.
12:43Astrid just smiled and sat with me patiently,
12:47holding my hand as I tried my best to relax,
12:50to tell myself I was okay.
12:52After a few minutes,
12:53I'd managed to mostly calm down,
12:55though I was still shaking a bit.
12:58Astrid, patient as ever,
13:00sat with me a little bit longer,
13:02rubbing the top of my hand in an effort to reassure me.
13:06Finally, she spoke softly to me.
13:08Jen, it's Halloween.
13:10People pull pranks on Halloween.
13:12You're okay.
13:13She turned out to be right.
13:15By the end of the day,
13:17not only had we not been targeted by a serial killer,
13:20but I had met a genuinely kind and cute guy at a party.
13:24With Astrid's help, pressuring,
13:27we even exchanged numbers,
13:29and I learned his name, Isaac.
13:31I was maybe a little bit more jumpy than normal,
13:34but that was easy enough to explain away to anyone unaware as the spooky season.
13:39All in all,
13:40it was a great day and a more than pleasant holiday experience.
13:45Still,
13:45as I tried to sleep that night,
13:47my mind would drift to the photo of the dead man.
13:50Yes,
13:51I was still convinced he was dead,
13:53and to the first photo I received,
13:55how were those two photos connected?
13:58Had she been dead too?
13:59She hadn't looked like it,
14:01but what other reason could there be that I'd receive both?
14:04Why had I received them at all?
14:06Needless to say,
14:07I didn't get much sleep that night.
14:09Over the course of the next year,
14:11I tried digging into the photos as best I could.
14:14Unfortunately,
14:15I had almost nothing to work with,
14:17as Astrid had thrown out both of the photos
14:20by the time I had decided to look into things.
14:23All these years later,
14:24I still don't blame her.
14:25For all she and I knew,
14:27they were just mean-spirited pranks
14:29that weren't worth holding on to.
14:32Still,
14:33this lack of physical evidence
14:35made asking questions of the neighbors incredibly awkward.
14:38Before you judge them too harshly, though,
14:41I'd probably be a bit creeped out
14:42by some random woman asking about murder pictures, too.
14:46Likewise,
14:47going to the police,
14:48at least,
14:49in my mind,
14:50felt like kind of a non-starter.
14:52Without the photos,
14:54all I had was my word,
14:55and nothing to actually show for it.
14:57As for message boards online,
14:59my most common response was advice for dealing with sexual harassment,
15:04which,
15:05while appreciated,
15:06wasn't really what I was looking for.
15:08To put it simply,
15:10I couldn't find anything.
15:11Even when I enlisted the help of Isaac,
15:13who,
15:14bless his heart,
15:15believed me 100% about the whole thing,
15:17we couldn't find a single shred of something we could use to understand what was going on.
15:23I had wanted to ask Astrid for her help, too,
15:26but she was dealing with her dad more and more that year,
15:29and the screaming matches honestly just sounded painful.
15:33The last thing I wanted,
15:34when she was already so stressed,
15:36was to add my garbage on top of her.
15:39By the beginning of October,
15:40I realized that I only really had one option left.
15:44Assuming this mystery mailer pulled the same prank as he had the years prior,
15:49I would have to wait for him to act again before I could have evidence.
15:53Then I could go to the police,
15:55explain what had just happened,
15:56and then,
15:58just maybe,
15:59I would have him.
16:00Just one more year.
16:01I convinced myself.
16:03When Halloween rolled around that year,
16:06I admit that I practically leapt from my bed and ran to get the mail.
16:10In my mind,
16:11I could picture a scraggly-looking man being hauled away in handcuffs,
16:15desperately pleading that it was just a joke.
16:18Likewise,
16:18I pictured a large and bulky man being forced to the ground as some police swarmed him,
16:24grunting as he fought uselessly against the officers restraining him.
16:28I'm not sure if this makes me a bad person or not,
16:31but I relished the idea of seeing this imagined creep getting overpowered like that.
16:36Letting him feel scared for once.
16:38It maybe then,
16:40also makes me a bad person then,
16:42that I was almost shocked,
16:43then angry,
16:44to see Astrid already at our table.
16:46Mail spread out before her.
16:48I wanted to scream.
16:50What was she doing?
16:51I always grabbed the mail.
16:53That was my job.
16:54Why was she screwing things up now,
16:56of all days?
16:57I realize,
16:58years later,
16:59that that wasn't fair.
17:00That Astrid couldn't possibly have known what I was planning.
17:05Still,
17:05in the moment,
17:06I had to compose myself,
17:08taking deep breaths as I slowed my pace and forced a smile.
17:12You know it's my job to get the mail, right?
17:15I playfully admonished as I walked up to the table and sat down.
17:20Eh,
17:20I was already out.
17:22Figured I'd grab it.
17:22She replied,
17:24tossing aside what looked to be another credit card offer.
17:27Maybe,
17:28I was just paranoid,
17:30but I had the distinct impression that she wasn't telling me something.
17:33Don't get me wrong,
17:34I had no reason to think that.
17:37My friend was acting and talking completely normal,
17:40right down to the bored expression and
17:42haphazard dismissal of any of the mail.
17:45It was more like a sixth sense,
17:48like a natural pre-built alarm that was going off in my head.
17:51I didn't actually want to accuse her of anything though,
17:54so I tried to just let it go.
17:56Okay,
17:57anything for me?
17:59I asked,
18:00probably a little too eagerly.
18:02Thankfully,
18:03Astrid didn't seem to pick up on that,
18:04and just shook her head as she looked at another piece of mail with disinterest.
18:09Nope.
18:09She replied.
18:11It felt like my heart stopped for a moment.
18:14No.
18:15What did she mean,
18:16no?
18:17No blank envelopes with my name on them.
18:19None at all.
18:21Not this year,
18:22babe.
18:22She was lying.
18:24She had to be.
18:25Why would this guy just suddenly stop?
18:27He wouldn't.
18:28He couldn't.
18:30Not when I had finally worked out the courage to do something.
18:33Astrid had to be lying,
18:34or maybe she had just missed it.
18:37Glancing at the table,
18:38while I quickly scanned the discarded envelopes and papers for any sign of something with my name.
18:43But nothing.
18:45I saw nothing.
18:47This didn't make any sense.
18:49How could there be nothing?
18:50Even when I took the envelopes and coupons,
18:53or whatever else was in the pile,
18:54and inspected them,
18:55I couldn't find anything.
18:58Nothing addressed to me in any odd way.
19:01No handwritten labels,
19:02just bills,
19:03useless junk,
19:04and more bills.
19:05In my frantic grabbing,
19:07I fell to notice Astrid giving me a slightly amused look.
19:10You want to take apart the mailbox, too?
19:13She asked with a chuckle.
19:15I didn't know what to say.
19:17I should have been relieved,
19:19ecstatic even,
19:19that there was nothing there.
19:21It was over,
19:22I thought.
19:23Shouldn't I be happy?
19:25Why was I so disappointed?
19:27No,
19:28it's just weird that it stopped.
19:30I admitted,
19:31trying to say thanks.
19:33Even at the time,
19:34I thought that was strange,
19:35that I described it as weird.
19:38Not getting a photo of a dead body was weird?
19:40How had I gotten so used to it in just two years?
19:43Was I really so eager to get the guy doing it in trouble,
19:46that I was upset that I didn't get anything?
19:48What was wrong with me?
19:51Looking back,
19:52I know I was wrong.
19:53I should have pushed harder,
19:55grueled Astrid about what she had done.
19:57I should have kept asking questions,
19:59or kept looking around.
20:01I should have kept digging.
20:04Maybe,
20:04if I had,
20:06Astrid wouldn't have gone missing November of that year.
20:09There was no warning,
20:10no letter,
20:11no talk,
20:12nothing.
20:13One day,
20:14she just got up to go to work,
20:16and when I finally got home from my own job,
20:19she wasn't home.
20:20At first,
20:21I wasn't really worried.
20:23Astrid had always been more social than I was,
20:26so maybe she had just gone out with some other friends.
20:31So I waited for her to get home that night,
20:33then I waited for a day.
20:35Then,
20:36by the following night,
20:37I tried calling her.
20:39Then I tried calling her again,
20:41and again,
20:42and again.
20:43Every time,
20:44I would get a single ring,
20:45then a disconnect,
20:46before the line went dead.
20:49Call me paranoid,
20:50but I knew something had happened.
20:52I wasn't sure if she was in danger,
20:54or had been kidnapped,
20:55killed,
20:56whatever,
20:56but she was in danger.
20:58I knew it.
20:59I called our mutual friends to try and find her,
21:02see if any of them knew where she was.
21:05At one point,
21:06I was even so desperate,
21:07that I tried calling her meat sack of a father.
21:10What does it matter?
21:12She's no good to me anymore,
21:15was all he said.
21:16My blood practically boiled at his response.
21:19No good to me,
21:20I thought.
21:21My best friend,
21:22his daughter,
21:23was missing,
21:24missing,
21:25and he didn't even care in the slightest.
21:27I'd always known he was a garbage person,
21:29but this felt like an all-time low.
21:31I swear,
21:32I could have throttled him,
21:33if he were in the same room as me.
21:35As it was,
21:36I had to settle for calling the cops.
21:38I remember reading somewhere
21:40that you have to wait 48 hours
21:41to be taken seriously
21:42for reporting a missing person.
21:45Thankfully,
21:45that ended up being a myth,
21:47as after my call,
21:48cops were at my door within an hour.
21:50I won't go over everything they asked.
21:52Honestly,
21:53I can barely remember everything myself,
21:55just that they asked questions like,
21:57where she worked,
21:58if this was her primary domicile,
22:01that sort of thing.
22:02I don't remember how long the questioning lasted,
22:04only that I was exhausted by the end of it.
22:07The police couldn't share everything
22:09they uncovered during their investigation,
22:11but from what they did,
22:12I got the impression
22:13that they were genuinely trying their best.
22:16For what it's worth,
22:17they did find out some good information,
22:19namely that Astrid had arrived at her job
22:22the day that she went missing.
22:24But rather than driving home afterwards,
22:27she confided in her coworkers
22:28that she was going to pay a visit
22:29to her father's house.
22:31I wish I could say from there
22:32it was an open and shut case,
22:34but from what they were allowed to share with me,
22:37the cops told me that she was witnessed entering
22:39and, after about 45 minutes,
22:41leaving her father's home.
22:43They suspected she was on her way home,
22:45but needless to say,
22:47she never arrived.
22:48Worse than that,
22:49they never found her car.
22:51There was no sign of it on the roads
22:53that would have taken her home.
22:55Not parked,
22:56not wrecked,
22:57not even a broken off piece of it.
22:58It was like she just up and vanished into thin air.
23:02They checked her dad out,
23:03of course,
23:04but the lump hadn't been seen leaving his house
23:06until a good 10 hours after Astrid had left.
23:09Since that was more than enough time
23:11for her to have gotten home,
23:12and because the guy was a shut-in
23:14with almost no friends to speak of,
23:16he was dropped as a suspect.
23:18Honestly,
23:19part of me will always think
23:20that he had something to do with it,
23:22but I understand why the police dropped him.
23:24By February of the next year,
23:26I had to move out of the apartment
23:28Astrid and I had shared.
23:30Rent was already a nightmare on its own,
23:32and it's even more so
23:33when you're suddenly paying
23:34for two people's worth.
23:36Isaac,
23:37God bless him,
23:38was kind enough to take me in.
23:39I was honestly more than fine with that.
23:42We'd been dating a little over a year
23:43by that point,
23:44and I really liked him.
23:46He stood by me
23:47every step of the way,
23:49and I must have apologized
23:50a thousand times
23:51for being so obsessed
23:52with Astrid's case.
23:54He would always say
23:55the same thing in reply.
23:57She's your best friend, hun.
23:59You don't have to explain yourself to me.
24:01It was honestly no wonder
24:03why we were engaged
24:04before the end of the year.
24:06We were still living together,
24:07I mean,
24:08we still are,
24:09but that's beside the point,
24:11when next Halloween rolled around.
24:13Isaac had taken over the duties
24:14of grabbing the mail,
24:16so I was cozied up in the bedroom
24:17watching some movie
24:18that I honestly can't remember
24:20the name of.
24:21All I remember
24:22is that it was some
24:23schlocky romance movie
24:24and that I was somewhere
24:25in the third act
24:26when I noticed Isaac
24:27stepping inside our room
24:28out of the corner of my vision.
24:30Hey hun,
24:32do you remember those
24:32plain envelopes
24:34you told me about?
24:35He asked.
24:36My chest tightened
24:37as I remembered them,
24:39muting the TV
24:39and focusing intensely
24:41on my fiancé.
24:42Staring more closely,
24:43I realized there was
24:45a confused look on his face
24:46and that he was
24:47clutching something
24:47in his hand.
24:48My chest tightened
24:50even more
24:50when I realized
24:51what it was.
24:52A plain white envelope.
24:54Yes,
24:55I remember.
24:56Why?
24:57What did they say
24:58on them again?
24:59To Jennifer.
25:01Isaac looked up
25:02at the unopened postage
25:03and frowned.
25:05That's all?
25:06Nothing else?
25:07Why?
25:08I asked,
25:09sheepishly pointing
25:10to the letter.
25:11What does that one say?
25:13Isaac glanced back
25:14at me for a minute.
25:15I could tell he was
25:16considering whether or not
25:18to hand the envelope
25:18to me.
25:20Honestly,
25:20I wasn't even sure
25:21if I wanted it
25:22or if I wanted him
25:23to throw it away.
25:25But then I remembered
25:26my plan from
25:27the year before.
25:29I could still try that,
25:30right?
25:31Maybe then
25:32the police could find Astrid.
25:33The guy who did this?
25:35Sure,
25:36I had no idea
25:37if they were even connected
25:38but it was a reasonable
25:39assumption,
25:40right?
25:41Couldn't I
25:42at least try?
25:43I could feel myself
25:44shaking as I sat up
25:46and extended
25:46an open hand
25:47to Isaac.
25:49Understandably,
25:49he seemed unsure
25:50at first.
25:51From his perspective,
25:53after all,
25:54these things were
25:54the result of some
25:55sick prankster
25:56going after his
25:57soon-to-be wife.
25:58In an effort
25:59to reassure him,
26:00I smiled the best
26:01I could
26:01and gently nodded
26:02my head.
26:03He still seemed
26:04antsy,
26:04but with a sigh
26:05he relinquished
26:06the envelope to me
26:07and I inspected it.
26:09I saw immediately
26:10why he had
26:11to double-check
26:11with me.
26:12Right away,
26:12I recognized
26:13the same shaky
26:14and sloppy handwriting
26:15and black ink,
26:16exactly as before,
26:18unlike the last
26:19two letters.
26:21However,
26:22this envelope said,
26:24She intervened.
26:26My stomach dropped
26:27and I felt the wind
26:28leave my gut,
26:29like I had been shocked.
26:31She?
26:32As in,
26:33Astrid?
26:33Before I realized
26:34what I was doing,
26:35I feverishly opened
26:36the envelope
26:37and pulled out
26:38yet another folded
26:39piece of paper.
26:39When I unfolded it,
26:41I screamed.
26:42It was Astrid,
26:44hanging from a noose,
26:46her skin pale
26:47and eyes closed.
26:48I don't remember
26:49much of what
26:50happened next.
26:50I know Isaac was there,
26:52holding me
26:52as I sobbed
26:53and screamed.
26:54He must have
26:55called the cops
26:56because they were
26:56swarming the apartment
26:57at some point.
26:58I'm sure they wanted
26:59to ask me questions,
27:01but I was pretty much
27:02inconsolable at that point.
27:04Isaac had to do
27:05most of the talking.
27:06Through the blur
27:07of events,
27:08I just imagined
27:09my friend,
27:10screaming,
27:11crying,
27:12begging for her life.
27:13Had she suffered?
27:15Had she been aware
27:16when she died?
27:17Had she fought back?
27:18Could I have done
27:19anything more
27:20to help her?
27:21I just wanted answers.
27:22Why?
27:23Why me?
27:24Why her?
27:25Why?
27:26Why?
27:26Why?
27:27I don't know.
27:28I still don't know.
27:30I'm sorry,
27:31but I don't have
27:32any answers for you,
27:33for me,
27:34for the cops,
27:34no one.
27:36There were a few suspects,
27:37but they all fell apart
27:38for one reason or another.
27:40A co-worker was seen
27:42driving the same way
27:43as her for a while,
27:44but he was dismissed
27:46thanks to his mom's
27:46eyewitness testimony.
27:48Her dad was a popular one,
27:50but he was pretty much
27:51sedentary,
27:52so he was out.
27:53They even considered me
27:55for a while.
27:56I think Isaac was more
27:57offended by that
27:58than I was.
27:59I was the closest person
28:00to her after all.
28:02Eventually, though,
28:03they realized I had no motive,
28:04and of course,
28:05that it couldn't be me
28:06when another photo
28:07arrived the next year.
28:09And the year after that,
28:10and the one after that,
28:12and after.
28:13To today,
28:15Isaac and I are now married
28:16and have two beautiful children,
28:18but still no idea
28:20who killed my best friend.
28:21Despite moving
28:22into a nice
28:23four-bedroom house,
28:24we still get the photos
28:26in the same plain envelopes.
28:28Isaac tried installing cameras
28:30by our mailbox,
28:31but they never picked up anything.
28:33No one ever shows up,
28:35and yet we still receive
28:36those stupid envelopes.
28:38Always blank,
28:39save for the same two words.
28:41To Jennifer.
28:44Every year.
28:46Same as always.
28:48Halloween is a few days away now,
28:50and against my husband's urging,
28:52I've decided I had enough.
28:55This year,
28:56I plan to sit
28:57and watch the mailbox all night.
28:59Maybe whoever's doing this
29:01knows how to avoid a camera,
29:02but he won't avoid me.
29:05I will see who is doing this,
29:07even if it kills me.
29:12I hope you guys enjoyed
29:14tonight's story.
29:15I want to thank
29:16Lady Spookaria,
29:18who voiced Jennifer.
29:20Midnight Creepypasta,
29:21who voiced Astrid.
29:24Enzo the Storyteller,
29:26who voiced the father.
29:29Dexter,
29:30who voiced the villain.
29:32And Creepy Oz,
29:34from The Waking Hour,
29:36who voiced Isaac.
29:38All of those voice actors
29:40have narration YouTube channels
29:42of their own
29:43that I recommend checking out.
29:45And for those of you
29:46who may have recognized Creepy Oz,
29:48don't forget that he has
29:49a new YouTube channel
29:50named The Waking Hour.
29:52I also want to thank
29:53New Technician3118,
29:57who wrote the story.
29:59And, as always,
30:01Morgan Goodman,
30:02for creating our intro music.
30:04So I have quite a few more
30:06of these big,
30:06collab projects planned,
30:08and I'm running into
30:10a situation where
30:11I'm getting them lined up
30:12and planned
30:12at a much faster pace
30:14than I am actually
30:15getting them produced.
30:16I do think, though,
30:17because it has been
30:18just absolutely crazy
30:19trying to line these up.
30:21Like, it's way fun,
30:22absolutely enjoy doing it,
30:23don't ever plan on stopping.
30:24But we've done a lot lately,
30:26and I just don't think
30:27that's sustainable for me,
30:28unfortunately,
30:29because I,
30:30as you guys know,
30:31I don't use any AI at all.
30:32And I'm a bit of a stickler
30:34for trying to ensure
30:35that everything on here
30:36is so authentic.
30:38Bearing that in mind,
30:39I might start doing
30:40a few more stories
30:41where it's just myself talking,
30:43just because they're
30:44a lot easier to do.
30:46There's a lot less, like,
30:47coordination that has to
30:48go on behind the scenes.
30:50But despite that,
30:52I still think it would be fun
30:53to do at least
30:54one big collab project a month
30:56where I bring on
30:57different voice actors
30:59from different channels.
30:59A lot of times
31:00they'll be new,
31:01sometimes they'll be
31:02people who reoccur,
31:03and it'll be fun either way.
31:05For those of you
31:06who may not have seen
31:07my post earlier,
31:08I have hired a new animator
31:09from Tabletop Animations
31:12to create some new visuals
31:14I'm planning on using
31:15on this channel.
31:16There'll be a minute
31:17until he's done with that,
31:19but I'm pretty excited
31:21for that to play out.
31:22I feel like for the longest time
31:23the visuals on this channel
31:25have really been the weak point,
31:27so hopefully we can
31:28get some improvements
31:29going on there.
31:30Let me know though
31:31what you guys would like
31:32to hear more
31:33or less of on this channel,
31:34whether that be
31:36different story categories,
31:38different background music,
31:39or anything like that.
31:41That's all helpful
31:42for me to know.
