00:00I went through a bad breakup, couldn't get the guy to leave me alone.
00:04He was showing up at my work, home, even my mom's house.
00:09I decided I couldn't do it anymore.
00:11I started looking at states hours away from my hometown.
00:15Not for a city, or too small of a town either.
00:19I wanted to be able to walk on the sidewalks and get to local shops.
00:23Moving to somewhere where I knew no one, it would be nice to live in a neighborly town.
00:28I finally settled on a little town in the Pacific Northwest.
00:33I flew out to look for a job and a place to live.
00:37I spent the first few days walking around the main town, applying at a few shops.
00:44I quickly found a small book manufacturing company.
00:47I had an interview and fit what they were looking for.
00:51After that was settled, I set about finding where Cal, my little tuxedo capped,
00:57and I would call home.
00:59I started exploring a bit farther from the main town.
01:03There were some cute, quiet places, but they weren't calling to me.
01:07Then I found my new little neighborhood, Jerusalem Street.
01:11It was settled just a bit back from the main road.
01:15Three rows of townhouses in a cul-de-sac.
01:18You could tell they had some age, but all were well kept, and it was a lovely little street.
01:25Not the near-identical wash of beige and gray that have become so common.
01:30Most were light pastels.
01:33It looked like people liked living here.
01:35Lots of trees and gentle light dampening the ground underneath.
01:40It was quiet.
01:41A couple of people were out with their dogs or walking to town.
01:45There was a small area in the center with a bird feeder, a bench, and a board that people
01:52could leave flyers or notes on.
01:54It looked like people took pride in making a community.
01:58In the row at the back of the cul-de-sac was an empty lavender home with the simple
02:04For Rent sign out in the front.
02:06I spoke to the realtor in town, and everything was taken care of.
02:10Luckily, the owners left some basic furniture, so I didn't have to worry about anything too
02:15big.
02:16I flew back home, packed up my important stuff, and drove across the country with Cal buckled
02:22into the passenger seat.
02:24Of course, I had to stop and rest for a couple of nights on the way.
02:28I let Cal out of a carrier and stretched in a hotel room for the night.
02:33I timed our arrival for late morning so I would have a large part of the day to unpack and
02:39to not disturb my new neighbors by getting there too early.
02:42Several people stopped by to welcome me as I was going back and forth from the car.
02:47An older woman, with blue hair and eccentric dress, introduced herself as Miss Jewels.
02:53She said they had a welcoming committee.
02:56She was one of the ones that started it as she lived here for most of her life.
03:00The neighborhood had a couple of rules, but nothing too bad or anything like an HOA.
03:06They would be around by dinner time.
03:08When you really should be taking a break anyway.
03:11She told me.
03:12She was nice.
03:14I told her I would be ready, and she said she hoped Cal would come out to see her.
03:19I smiled.
03:20I spent the next couple of hours getting everything out of the car so I could let Cal into the
03:25rest of the house to explore, and I could get a shower before the welcoming committee
03:30showed up.
03:31Around 5.30 there was a knock on my door, and I saw Miss Jewels with a couple of other
03:36people.
03:37I welcomed them in.
03:39Miss Jewels introduced me to Dave Hancock and the middle-aged neighbor directly beside
03:43me, and Kayla, a woman around my age who lived in the row of houses to my right.
03:49Miss Jewels had brought some sandwiches and bags of assorted chips.
03:54We sat around my table where I had managed to clear most of my stuff off.
03:59She commented that I had done well for one day of work.
04:03We sat around eating and making small talk.
04:06Kayla seemed shy but told me she would be happy to show me around town if I wanted to stay.
04:12I'm sure I'll take you up on that.
04:14But what do you mean, if I want to stay?
04:18Kayla nervously looked at Miss Jewels.
04:20She smiled warmly at me.
04:23We may as well get to the neighborhood rules.
04:26It's really not much to worry about.
04:28Can I have that paperwork, please?
04:31Dave opened a folder with some papers in it.
04:33There was a map, a small pamphlet about the community center, and a printed list about our
04:39little street.
04:40Miss Jewels pushed them toward me.
04:42You can read those at your leisure, but I do have to go over some things with you tonight.
04:49Okay, no problem.
04:50I stammered a little.
04:52The street cleaner comes once a month.
04:55In the afternoon on the first Tuesday of the month, you'll want any cars in the driveway
05:00to be out at that time.
05:01I'm sure you saw the board in the middle by the bench.
05:04You can find information about town events, people trying to re-home things, or even some
05:12snacks for people to take.
05:13We all vote at the community center when it's that time of year.
05:18This is all written down for you, and you can come to any of us here if you have any
05:23questions
05:24or if you need anything, but now you know where the three of us live.
05:29I'll be sure to leave some cookies out for everyone once I'm settled in.
05:32I didn't say more.
05:34It felt like she was done going over things.
05:37There was a bit of tension in the air.
05:40Cal cautiously peeked around the corner to see what was going on.
05:43Hello, dear.
05:45How do you like your new home?
05:48She held her hand down to him.
05:50He slowly approached and sniffed her for a minute before rubbing against her hand.
05:55You must smell my Emily.
05:57She's my tauty.
05:59Cute.
06:00I smiled.
06:01I'd like to meet her sometime.
06:04Absolutely.
06:06She paused before continuing.
06:08This is an old town.
06:10Not much has changed in a long time.
06:14It's had slow growth, and many natural areas have been maintained for centuries.
06:20The trees behind our street at the edge of the state park.
06:23Wow, that's awesome.
06:25Kayla, I'd explore with you if that's something you'd like to do.
06:29I'd love to.
06:30I don't have a hiking buddy.
06:32Kayla responded.
06:33Before I could say more, Miss Jules continued.
06:36I'll finish up so you can get some rest tonight.
06:39There's just one more rule we all follow here.
06:42Her face looked older than it had a minute ago, makeup crowding in the gentle creases of her face.
06:49She looked into my eyes.
06:50Don't go outside if you hear noises at night.
06:55It's not all night.
06:57Just between one and three.
06:59Don't go out at that time.
07:01If you do get caught out at that time, there's Ashley Street just down the main road.
07:06You saw that, right?
07:08Park there for the night.
07:10Many of us have had to sit in our cars for a couple of hours over the years.
07:15This is a small enough town that that neighborhood knows it's just us, and they won't get worried by a
07:20car there early in the morning.
07:22I didn't know what to think.
07:24My mind tried to come up with a logical reason.
07:27Do animals come in from the park?
07:30Something does.
07:31She said quietly.
07:33It's been at least as long as I have.
07:36As long as you don't look out, there's nothing to worry about.
07:40And don't worry about Cal.
07:42He'll be fine.
07:43I keep Emily inside just to be safe.
07:46It's not every night, but you're better off just not looking out at that time at all.
07:52I know this is a lot to take in, but please just listen to it.
07:57Any of our community will talk to you if you have any questions.
08:01We'll leave you be for tonight.
08:03I'll check in soon.
08:05With that, she stood up from the table and the others followed.
08:09Kayla waved goodbye.
08:11Miss Jewel's blue hair shone under the streetlight until she made it to the door.
08:17Dave stood around another moment as we watched them go.
08:21I know that all sounds pretty weird.
08:23The people that lived here before couldn't handle it and they left.
08:26My phone number is with the paperwork if you need anything.
08:29Or if you really need something overnight, just bang on the wall and I'll hear.
08:33I'll be over at 3-0-1.
08:35Good night.
08:37Good night.
08:38I headed back inside, head pounding.
08:42I sat heavily on the couch and tried to absorb what I had just heard.
08:47Miss Jewel's looked serious and she had been so nice.
08:50I felt bad doubting her.
08:52What was the harm in listening to her?
08:54I was normally sleeping at that time anyway and she said Cal was safe.
08:59If she was...
09:00If they all were, being honest, I didn't want to find out.
09:05I would just stay inside and not go looking.
09:09Cal decided he was ready for bed and I followed.
09:12It had been a long day.
09:14I fell asleep hard and didn't wake up until sunlight was streaming through my window.
09:19Cal was crying to be fed.
09:22I dragged myself out of bed as my thoughts drifted to the previous night.
09:27Maybe there was nothing.
09:29I hadn't woken up at all and Cal was acting normally.
09:32He was fine anywhere as long as he was getting food.
09:35I got him fed and looked out my window.
09:39Miss Jewel's was sitting on the bench, glancing back at my house.
09:43I got dressed and headed out to see her.
09:46How good.
09:47How was your first night?
09:49She stood up and took my hand.
09:52Slept like a log.
09:53I didn't wake up until Cal demanded breakfast.
09:56She nodded.
09:57I'm sorry I had to spring that on you last night.
10:01But it really has to be done right away.
10:03A few people started their mornings smiling or nodding to us.
10:08They all looked a little relieved.
10:11So, it really is true then.
10:13I'll be honest, I was half thinking I dreamt that.
10:17Unfortunately, yes.
10:19It's how I lost my husband and our son.
10:22I didn't want to scare you too much last night.
10:26I don't have to tell you the details.
10:29I stared blankly for a few seconds.
10:32I'm so sorry.
10:34It's okay, honey.
10:35It's been a long time.
10:37It's just a little bit easier than it used to be.
10:40I know they wouldn't want me to spend every day sad over them.
10:44Can I ask what happened?
10:46What happens if you look?
10:48Are you sure?
10:49I thought another moment.
10:51I would rather know than let the curiosity get to me.
10:53She sat back down.
10:56We had heard the rules when we moved in together right out of school.
11:00My husband, Charles and me.
11:02People had doubts about us, but we were meant to be from the day we met.
11:07When our son, Joe, was born, we decided we would lock him in his room for the night.
11:13We gave him the one without windows to be safe.
11:17Joe was getting a little older and we hadn't locked his room at night anymore.
11:22I guess one day he got curious or didn't believe us.
11:27We heard a scream and ran to his room.
11:30Joe wasn't there.
11:32Before I could react, Charles pushed me in and locked the door.
11:36I heard him run out and then just silence.
11:41The neighbours saw what happened in the morning and rushed to the house.
11:45They found me locked inside.
11:47There was really nothing left of them.
11:51Chunks strewn across the lawn everywhere.
11:55Blood soaked into the grass.
11:59They were buried together, just pieces.
12:03There was no way to tell who was who.
12:06That's all any of us know.
12:08Holy shit, I whispered.
12:10I could feel the bile heating up in my stomach, threatening to come up my throat.
12:16I'm so sorry.
12:17I don't know what else to say.
12:20I'll never get the sight out of my mind, so...
12:23I try hard to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else.
12:27You really will be okay if you don't look.
12:30I should go tend to my Emily.
12:33I walked her home and gave her a hug.
12:36I went back inside and collapsed against the door.
12:39Cow came to see what was wrong and I scooped him up and cried.
12:43What the fuck?
12:44How is this real?
12:45I told myself again that this was the middle of the night.
12:48Just stay asleep.
12:50Stay in bed.
12:51My house was perfect.
12:52My neighbours were lovely.
12:54Just don't look for any sounds at night.
12:57I spent the rest of the day in a daze, listlessly organising my belongings.
13:03Cow screamed at me and I just about jumped out of my skin.
13:07He just wanted dinner.
13:09But my heart was pounding and my hands were shaking.
13:12I got him taken care of to stop his yelling.
13:15I sat at the table and slid the bottle of whiskey over towards me.
13:19Just as I was going to take a swig out of the bottle, there was a knock at the door.
13:23I was tired but got up to check.
13:26There was a swath of black hair.
13:28It was Kayla.
13:29Hey.
13:30She smiled weakly at me.
13:32I stood to the side.
13:34Do you want to come in?
13:35I was just going to have a drink.
13:37She stepped in.
13:39Mrs. Jules said she talked to you and wanted to see how you were holding up.
13:43I stood to the side.
13:45Do you want to come in?
13:47I was just going to have a drink.
13:49She stepped in.
13:51Thanks.
13:52Now that I had company, I grabbed two glasses and a couple cans of coke.
13:56I guess you would have heard her story too.
13:59How long have you lived here?
14:01I inquired.
14:02Yeah.
14:03Just a bit over a year.
14:06Have you seen anything?
14:08No.
14:09I've never dared look.
14:11No one else has looked since I've been here.
14:15The people who lived here before finally heard noises and they left.
14:20She was pregnant.
14:21I think that's a big reason why they didn't want to stay.
14:25So, you have heard things?
14:27Not a lot.
14:28I started sleeping with earbuds pretty quickly.
14:32I did not need to hear it anymore.
14:35I looked at her, hoping she would go on, but didn't want to pressure her.
14:40She continued.
14:41The first time, I just heard something walking around.
14:46It was quiet, but I could hear it rustling leaves as it went.
14:50I told myself it had just been an animal.
14:54We do live against the woods.
14:56But a couple of nights later, I heard it walking again.
15:00I had blinds drawn, but I still didn't even want to look in that direction.
15:04I tried to ignore it and go back to sleep.
15:07The movement stopped.
15:09Then I heard the faintest scratch and then knocking on the window like someone tapping with just a fingernail.
15:17I found some faint footprints in the morning.
15:20She paused to take a drink.
15:23They were bigger than I expected.
15:25They almost looked like a deer mixed with a human.
15:31Almost like there was a heel, but then they turned cloven.
15:36I moved my bed upstairs that day and started sleeping with the earbuds that night.
15:41It helps.
15:42I really recommend it.
15:44Thanks for the drink.
15:45I should go get settled for the night.
15:47Let me know when you've had time to unpack and we can go do some hiking during the day.
15:53She said, finishing it.
15:55Of course.
15:56And thanks for the tip.
15:58The next couple of weeks, I continued to put everything in their new places and started my new job.
16:03I was getting the hang of it.
16:05Things started to feel a little normal.
16:08Kayla and I had started hiking on Saturday or Sunday mornings, still well after the sun had risen.
16:14I hadn't heard anything at night.
16:16I never forgot to close the blinds, but I did start to forget about the noises.
16:21Nearly a month after I moved in, I heard walking through the neighborhood.
16:25I had seen deer a couple of times, coming around dusk to drink at a couple birdbaths around the street.
16:33They were back.
16:34That's all it was.
16:36Still, I was glad I listened to Kayla's story and put my bedroom on the second floor.
16:41I about shit myself when I heard the tapping on my window.
16:45I whisper called for Cal.
16:47He sat up from the end of the bed.
16:49My heart sank into my stomach.
16:52The tapping continued.
16:54I reached for my phone.
16:56It was after 2.45.
16:58This should be over soon.
16:59I didn't want to disturb him, but I felt like I had to talk to someone.
17:04My hands were shaking so badly, I had to retype the message about four times.
17:09Hi Dave.
17:10Sorry to bother you so early.
17:11I just can't sleep.
17:13I jumped as the tapping started to get more aggressive.
17:16My phone went off.
17:18It's no problem.
17:19Don't worry.
17:19It'll be over soon.
17:21Just a few minutes and then it's over for the night.
17:23It's never gotten in.
17:25Just don't look.
17:26Let me know if you need me to come over after or tomorrow.
17:282.45.
17:30So close.
17:32Okay.
17:33Five minutes.
17:34I can do that.
17:35I think I'll get the shades.
17:37The blinds aren't good enough.
17:39Dave.
17:39That's a good idea.
17:41Tell Cal hi for me.
17:42I sat for another couple of minutes and then the tapping stopped all at once.
17:47There was no rustling of something moving away.
17:51Just silence.
17:52I pulled a slightly disgruntled Cal up closer to me.
17:56In...
17:56With my anxiety through the roof.
17:58I didn't sleep the rest of the night.
18:01Dave caught me in the morning.
18:03You did well.
18:04That was worse than it normally is.
18:06I could hear it from mine.
18:08Let me know if you need help with those blinds.
18:10He waved and was on his way before I could respond.
18:13He liked talking about these things even less than the others.
18:17I couldn't blame him.
18:19I stopped to get blinds after work and didn't forget to put my earbuds in again.
18:23Things continued as they had.
18:25Work.
18:26Hike.
18:27Play with Cal.
18:28I was making enough at my new job to be fine, but I had spent most of my savings to
18:33suddenly
18:34move.
18:34I stopped at the local bar and started taking some shifts Friday nights, Saturdays, or Sundays.
18:40This was a smaller town, so even with a later shift, I had about half an hour by the time
18:45I got home to get inside safely.
18:47I was busy and tired, but it would be worth it.
18:51I would feel better having savings again, but I was just getting so tired.
18:56Finally, last Friday night, I was exhausted.
19:00That type of bone tire that sinks deep into your skeleton.
19:03So drained that a minor inconvenience could make you start crying.
19:08I worked every day for three weeks.
19:11I got home after my bar shift, 12.35.
19:15All I had to do was drag my tired butt in the house and pass out for the night.
19:21The next thing I remember is how uncomfortable I felt.
19:24My eyes snapped open.
19:26Fuck.
19:27I fell asleep.
19:28How long had it been?
19:29I had only just got home, right?
19:32I was in my own driveway with plenty of time to get in.
19:35I looked at my phone.
19:372.24.
19:38Fuck me.
19:39I heard something right by me.
19:41Before I could stop myself, I was looking over.
19:44All I saw were fingertips just barely placed onto my driver's side window.
19:50The rest of the hem was obscured by the door.
19:53Then there was movement.
19:55What seemed to be branches started to move.
19:58They were turning towards my car.
20:00One gnarled point making contact with my window
20:03and scraping along it.
20:05I slammed my eyes shut.
20:08One hand desperately pulled my hood over my head
20:10and the other covered my mouth,
20:13willing my breath to get under control
20:15and not have a full-blown panic attack.
20:17I hadn't really seen anything, right?
20:20It didn't see me look.
20:22All I saw were fingertips.
20:24It could have been a normal person who got lost and ended up here.
20:28After all, the noises didn't come every night.
20:32Those weren't antlers.
20:34It was a trick of the darkness.
20:36But then, what had made the shrill scraping come from right outside?
20:41And those were fingertips,
20:43but they were too long and rough.
20:45Worn, cracked, and dirty.
20:48I curled in my seat,
20:50trying not to scream.
20:51My eyes squeezed shut.
20:53Antlers like bark,
20:54but hard enough to damage the metal burned into my mind.
20:58There was a slap.
20:59I bit into my lip hard enough to bleed,
21:02but I didn't scream.
21:03It sounded like a hand slamming into my door,
21:07beside the other fingertips.
21:09I could hear heavy breathing.
21:11My chest ached.
21:13It felt like my heart would give out
21:15before anything else had a chance to happen.
21:17My stomach lurched as my car rocked.
21:20Hard.
21:21Tears and snot soaked my hoodie.
21:24Another slam on the car,
21:26and it rocked again.
21:27It felt like if it hit any harder,
21:29the glass would break.
21:31What were the rules here?
21:32Could it get in?
21:33It really seemed to be trying.
21:35A different slam echoed through my bones.
21:37The sick sound was like a head against glass,
21:41antlers scratching on the metal frame above.
21:44It slammed its head again.
21:46There was nothing I could do.
21:48Again.
21:49It wasn't in yet,
21:51and I figured my best bet was to stay down
21:53and keep my eyes shut.
21:55Again.
21:56The car rocked,
21:58gentler this time,
21:59and the slamming stopped.
22:01I couldn't open my eyes.
22:03I didn't think it was long enough.
22:05It couldn't be three o'clock yet,
22:08but it was so hard to tell.
22:10Minutes felt like hours.
22:12Time was dripping by like cold molasses.
22:15How long had it stopped to stare in at me
22:17before its assault?
22:18I could hear it walking about,
22:21pacing around the car,
22:23until it started to fade out.
22:25Then I heard hooves on pavement.
22:27Metal squealed and glass cracked.
22:30I screamed.
22:32Dead silence.
22:33I continued to lay curled on my side.
22:37Nothing more came.
22:38I heard Miss Jules calling me and running.
22:41I didn't dare open my eyes.
22:44It took a few minutes of convincing,
22:45but I finally held my phone up and looked.
22:483.12.
22:49I started uncontrollably sobbing.
22:52Fear and relief wracked my body,
22:55and I laid there shaking badly,
22:57my stomach in knots.
22:59I was eventually able to unlock my door.
23:03Miss Jules ripped it open
23:04and held me in her arms.
23:06We cried together.
23:08That was nearly a month ago.
23:10I thought I'd leave that day,
23:12but I'm still here.
23:13Where else would I go?
23:15I have kind, caring neighbors.
23:18My home is nice.
23:19I talk with Miss Jules.
23:21Dave checks in on me.
23:23I hike with Kayla,
23:24and I hold Cal close.
23:26I did quit working at the bar that day.
23:29I'll never go out at night again.
23:31I sleep with earbuds and a white noise machine.
23:34My bedroom windows are shuttered tight from the inside
23:37as soon as it starts to get dark.
23:41I want to give a big thank you to Whispering Scream

23:46very terrible female impersonation.
