00:00This Valentine's Day, be careful, because some gifts bring more than a romance.
00:07Last year, I lost everything on Valentine's Day.
00:11I know it was my fault. I pray no one ever makes the same mistake I did.
00:17A week before the big day, I found myself trying to think of the perfect gift for my girlfriend Cassie.
00:23All the good restaurants had already been booked.
00:26I hated going out on Valentine's Day, so I didn't care too much.
00:30To be honest, our relationship was on a bit of a rough patch.
00:34I still loved my girlfriend, but I found myself wondering if she felt the same.
00:40She had started to go through my things.
00:42I caught her with my phone a few times, as well as seeing her dig in my coat pockets.
00:48I wasn't cheating, and I didn't know why she would ever assume I would do such a thing.
00:52I've heard cheaters act paranoid, but this was Cassie we were talking about.
00:58She couldn't do such a thing.
01:00If she fell out of love with me, she was too kind-hearted to break it off.
01:05Instead, she might start looking for reasons to get me fed up with her.
01:10Like that would ever happen.
01:12It was unreasonably warm.
01:14I had gone to an outdoor market to buy her some fresh flowers.
01:18It was a few days early, but the market would be closed on the 13th.
01:23I picked up a pricey dozen roses and then started looking around for another gift for her.
01:29Nothing spoke to me.
01:30I was about to give up when a small booth tucked to the side caught my eye.
01:35The simple display was crammed with handmade jewelry.
01:39Cassie didn't like big, expensive gifts.
01:42Maybe a cheap, but nice-looking ring would win me some favors.
01:46See anything you like.
01:49I turned to see a tall, thin man behind me.
01:53He held a brown paper bag filled with assorted fruits.
01:56He went behind the table to place the bag on the empty chair, showing he was the seller.
02:02He gave me a weird vibe.
02:05Dark bags were under his lazy eyes, and for some odd reason, he reminded me of a snake.
02:11Just looking, thank you, I said as politely as I could.
02:17I made a show of glancing over the table.
02:20A few more seconds, then I would leave.
02:23He reached down to pick up the necklace from the pile and tossed it.
02:27I caught it on reflex.
02:29It was a simple silver-colored chain with a heart pendant.
02:33You seem like the type to have a girlfriend you love to pieces.
02:38She might not be on the same level.
02:42Relationship is a bit rocky, and you're unsure how to save it.
02:46You might think things will work out if she loves you as much as you love her and all that.
02:53He spoke as he picked up an apple.
02:56He polished the fruit on his shirt as I stayed silent.
03:00What kind of trick was this?
03:02Were my problems so common that any grifter could use what bothered me as a script to scam poor guys
03:09this time of the year?
03:10It's really not like that, I said, trying to dismiss his words.
03:14Oh, well, either way, the necklace will be a nice gift to go along with the roses.
03:22Don't worry, I'm not begging for money here.
03:26I'll make you a deal.
03:28If the necklace works and she starts loving you more than anyone else, I'll accept payment later.
03:35If it doesn't work, it's free.
03:39I let him take a few bites of the apple as I looked over the silver chain.
03:43It was pretty, and the offer was oddly tempting.
03:48So, you're saying I can just take this right now?
03:51And if it all works out, I come back here and pay you for it?
03:55I asked.
03:57He shrugged, almost bored.
03:59Or I find you.
04:02I looked over the small pendant.
04:04There was no way he hid a tracker inside it.
04:07This entire situation was weird.
04:11Really weird.
04:11Still, for some odd reason, I went with it.
04:16I had no taste when it came to jewelry.
04:19This random guy might have just picked out the perfect gift for me.
04:24Who cares if he was acting a bit creepy about it?
04:27Alright, thanks, I guess.
04:29I started walking away, expecting him to start shouting that I stole from him.
04:34Instead, he watched me leave with an odd expression on his face.
04:38It was as if he knew something I didn't.
04:41The roses went over very well.
04:44I had planned on giving Cassie the necklace in a few days, but she found it going through
04:49my coat pockets.
04:51She claimed to have misplaced her chapstick and didn't listen to me when I said it wasn't
04:55in my pockets.
04:56I should have been upset with her, but I couldn't after I saw her bright expression.
05:01She squealed in delight.
05:04Within seconds, she asked me to help her put on the thin silver chain.
05:08That night, she acted exactly how I had hoped.
05:13All her attention was focused on us.
05:16No more snooping.
05:17No more stiff movements or stumbling on her words, as if she was hiding something.
05:22Our Valentine's Day came early, and then everything fell apart.
05:28I should have noticed something was off based on how clingy she got after that day.
05:32I barely had enough time alone to go to the bathroom.
05:36Cassie woke me up with breakfast in bed, which was new.
05:40She saw me off at the door when I went to work, and she was waiting when I came home.
05:45Our dog didn't even wait by the door like this.
05:48I wondered just how long she would act like this and how long until it started to become
05:54annoying.
05:55Hey, I know tomorrow is Valentine's Day, but I need to drop by my brother's place after
06:00work.
06:01Is that alright?
06:02I asked her right before we started getting ready for bed.
06:06I expected her to be upset, but she just smiled brightly and nodded.
06:11Yeah, all this was getting weird.
06:13No problem.
06:15Say hello to Angie for me when you go.
06:16I found myself crossing my arms to look her over.
06:20She hated Angie.
06:21She never approved of my brother dating a girl who cheated on her last boyfriend.
06:26Did that necklace have some sort of weird drug on it?
06:30No, that didn't make any sense.
06:32I touched it with my bare hands.
06:35I would have been affected by anything that had been put on this chain.
06:40Plus, I didn't think there was anything that could be absorbed into the skin that made people
06:44act like this.
06:46Was this a prank she somehow set up?
06:49No, that wasn't like her.
06:51Hey, the chain of the necklace keeps getting caught in your hair when you sleep.
06:55It looks painful.
06:57Why don't you take it off and only wear it when you have your hair up?
06:59I asked.
07:00If this whole thing was because of a weird, cursed necklace, then taking it off would solve
07:05everything, right?
07:07I held my breath as Cassie agreed.
07:10She carefully took off her gift and placed it on the bedside table.
07:15My hope was that she would go back to normal now, that she wasn't wearing the thing.
07:19I woke up on the big day a bit early.
07:22I wanted to repay Cassie for how thoughtful she had been lately.
07:26I made her breakfast, but she was too tired to get up right away to eat it.
07:30I kissed her goodbye and headed off to a boring day at work.
07:34She sent a few texts saying how excited she was to spend the night with me, but when lunch
07:40hit, nothing.
07:41At least her flurry of texts had stopped.
07:45Maybe taking off the necklace did solve my problems.
07:48I packed up a few minutes early and left work.
07:51It was a small office, so no one really cared about staying the full eight hours if you finished
07:56what you had to do.
07:58I drove to my brother's place to drop off some stuff I put aside for him that had been
08:02sitting in my trunk for weeks.
08:05I should have done this way sooner.
08:07I just kept forgetting about it.
08:10When I arrived, I noticed his door was slightly open.
08:13That was odd.
08:15I knocked once, calling out for the two of them.
08:19You guys there?
08:20It wasn't like him to keep his door unlocked, let alone open.
08:24I smelled something coming from the house.
08:27Carefully, I put down the small box in my arms and fully opened the door.
08:32I kept calling out their names as I went inside.
08:35What I saw still haunts my every waking moment.
08:39Blood.
08:40So much blood.
08:42It started in the front hallway and then trailed into the living room.
08:46My heart raced, but I couldn't control my body.
08:49I moved slowly, trying not to step into the mess.
08:53My mind simply refused to believe what I was seeing.
08:57At first, I didn't recognize the body through the blood.
09:01When he coughed and let out a raspy noise, I knew it was my brother.
09:06I raced over to him to take his hand, not caring about preserving the scene.
09:11Go.
09:12Mom.
09:14Dad.
09:15He said, through a ruined mouth.
09:18Then he was gone.
09:20I couldn't move.
09:21I couldn't think.
09:22I didn't understand what was happening.
09:25Then, all at once, I went into action.
09:28I called 911, and I stayed on the line as I looked through the house for Angie.
09:32The operator told me to go outside in case the person who hurt them was still inside the house.
09:37I ignored the advice until I found out it was too late for my brother's girlfriend.
09:42I begged them to send the police over to my parents' place.
09:45My brother wouldn't have mentioned my parents if it wasn't important.
09:50Soon the scene was swarming with cops.
09:52I was taken away to be interviewed.
09:55At least they brought me a change of clothing and shoes and let me wash my hands.
09:59After the longest three hours of my life,
10:02an officer came into the interview room with a grim expression.
10:06I'm sorry to tell you this, but your parents are gone.
10:10We assume it was the same person who killed your brother and his girlfriend.
10:15He said in a careful tone.
10:17I kept shaking my head.
10:19My entire body felt numb.
10:22I wanted to run away, but I knew no matter what I did,
10:26it didn't change the fact that I'd lost my entire family in a few short hours.
10:31I need to call my girlfriend.
10:33I said in a small voice as I tried to keep my hands from shaking.
10:38It's possible she has something to do with all this?
10:41He asked.
10:42I knew it was a question he needed to ask,
10:45but I felt offended he would ever think such a thing.
10:47No, she could never do something like this.
10:50She loves me.
10:51She can't even kill a spider.
10:53So please, let me call her and see if she's safe.
10:57I begged.
10:58He nodded and moved to get my phone.
11:00The door opened and a pale-faced officer nodded to his co-worker.
11:05They told me to wait outside the interview room.
11:08Something was happening.
11:09Something they didn't want me to know about just yet.
11:12I felt like I was going to pass out, or puke, from the stress.
11:18Without realizing it, I'd gotten up to start pacing around the room.
11:22When they came back, both officers looked as if they had seen a ghost.
11:26Do you have any enemies?
11:28The younger one asked.
11:29My stomach flipped.
11:31Had Cassie been hurt?
11:32I didn't have much else to lose at that point.
11:34I braced myself for whatever news they were going to give me.
11:38I never would have been ready for what they said.
11:41There had been a fire at my office just after I left for the day.
11:45My co-workers and boss had been inside.
11:48None of them made it.
11:50Six people in total died.
11:52I sank to my knees.
11:54My vision grew hazy.
11:55I felt my body get lifted back to my feet.
11:59The shock had finally set in, and I couldn't say a word.
12:02Knowing I was useless, the cops asked a few yes or no questions that I could answer by
12:08nodding.
12:08They said no one had been in contact with Cassie all day.
12:12They kept trying her cell phone, but hadn't had any luck.
12:16Since I was useless at the station, they let me go home.
12:19Two officers were going to sit in front of my house all night, just in case.
12:24Considering what had already happened, I didn't have much faith in them to stop anything else
12:30my life had planned for me.
12:31I kept trying to call Cassie.
12:34I needed to hear her voice and to know that she was alright.
12:38I paced around my table, unable to do anything else.
12:42I simply couldn't stay still.
12:45Our dog Jose followed me around the house.
12:48When I found myself in the living room, I finally noticed he stopped following me.
12:53I paused long enough to listen, expecting to hear him bark.
12:56Had someone broken in?
12:59Or did he just see a stray cat outside?
13:02There was no barking, and no sounds of someone trying to force open the door.
13:07Of course, there wouldn't be.
13:09She already had a key.
13:11I asked when I saw her figure in the dark hallway.
13:16I quickly turned on the light and took a step back when I fully saw her.
13:20Her clothing was soaked in blood.
13:22Some dry, some fresh.
13:25Her arms had long scratches down them.
13:28Her hair was a tangled mess, but the look on her face was what sent chills down my spine.
13:34She was smiling.
13:35You, you're bleeding.
13:38I choked out, but didn't move closer to her.
13:41We should ask the police by the door for some help.
13:43They're not available right now.
13:45She said in a cheery voice that made me take a step back.
13:49Jose went right up to her, tail wagging and tongue out.
13:53My heart nearly stopped when she bent down to pet his white fur,
13:57a dirty knife I hadn't noticed sooner so close to his face.
14:01Did you?
14:01I was unable to finish the terrible question.
14:05Yes, and don't worry.
14:07I won't hurt Jose.
14:08He's not a person, after all.
14:10Nothing made sense.
14:12How had the entire world gone so wrong so fast?
14:15I don't understand, I said.
14:17My chest hurt so much, it was as if it started to cave into itself.
14:22It's easy.
14:23I love you.
14:25I love you so much.
14:27I realized that you only need me.
14:31No one else in this world.
14:33If I could, I would make it so that there are only the two of us on this planet.
14:38But I'm only human.
14:39Just being the last person you'll ever love has to be good enough.
14:45She straightened up, knife in hand.
14:49Jose was stressed out and he started to move around, unsure of what was happening.
14:53I should have moved.
14:55Instead, I just watched as she flung herself at me.
14:59The crazed expression on her face.
15:01I wanted to die then.
15:03With her, on Valentine's Day.
15:06The blade sunk deep, just below my collarbone.
15:09I collapsed with her on top as she withdrew the knife, only to bring it down once more.
15:15For some odd reason, it didn't hurt.
15:18It was as if I was watching the entire thing from a distance.
15:22I saw a beaten and bloody cop burst through the door.
15:27His words were drowned out by Jose's barking.
15:30He fired twice.
15:32And then all the sound around us stopped.
15:38Cassie still had that smile on her face.
15:41Not even death stopped her from loving me.
15:43If that cop hadn't shown up when he did, I wouldn't still be alive.
15:48I spent a week in the hospital, comatose from shock.
15:52My body slowly recovered as my mind started to work again.
15:56The nurses were good to me.
15:58The police never told them who I was.
16:00But the office fire and the murderers were on the local news.
16:04The hospital staff were able to put the clues together.
16:08They gave me a private room, away from any reporters.
16:12My bedside table was always filled with flowers, or a fruit basket, despite the fact I no longer
16:18had any loved ones who would have sensed such a thing.
16:20Two weeks after being admitted to the hospital, I woke up with another person in my room.
16:26Not a nurse, or a doctor.
16:29Someone who made my entire body turn cold, then red hot with anger.
16:35The man with the lazy eyes sat next to me, helping himself to the fruit basket.
16:40Why?
16:42I asked him, with my voice shaking.
16:45Because you wanted her to love you.
16:48He answered, as he chewed away on an apple without a care in the world.
16:53That wasn't love.
16:54It was madness.
16:56Isn't that what love is sometimes?
16:58A bit of madness.
17:00And each person acts differently while they're in love.
17:03How can we judge them for their feelings?
17:06I've never hated a person more in my life.
17:09I wanted to strangle him with my bare hands.
17:12What are you even doing here?
17:13I demanded.
17:15His dark eyes finally fell on me.
17:18I asked the question he had been waiting for.
17:20He carefully set down the half-eaten apple, his movement swift and almost inhuman.
17:26I found myself unable to move.
17:28I became frozen in the hospital bed as he slowly started to crawl next to me, his face draped
17:36in shadow, his hands becoming like claws, and his dark eyes now shining in amusement.
17:43I've come to accept my payment, he hissed, his voice growing low and raspy.
17:50I was able to slightly shake my head.
17:53I told you, she didn't.
17:55My words were cut off by a low laughter.
17:58She loved you so much, she couldn't bear the thought of you caring for another person.
18:03As he spoke, the room grew distorted.
18:06Soon all I could hear were his glowing eyes in the darkness.
18:10She even sacrificed herself so you would never be blamed for the murders.
18:15Why else do you think you're still alive?
18:18I would much rather be dead.
18:20No matter how he twisted his words, I would never accept Cassie did what she did out of
18:26love.
18:27She won't be the last person I'll ever love.
18:29I'll move on from this.
18:31I said, but my heart wasn't in it.
18:34An explosion of laughter came.
18:39It shook me down to my bones.
18:42No, you won't.
18:44Because that will be my payment.
18:46I want to watch you squirm.
18:49To hate yourself.
18:50To be distant and to have your heart closed off for the rest of your life.
18:54Whenever you start getting close to another person, you'll think back on what you wished
19:00for.
19:00If anyone else ever loves you, they'll show it in the same little way Cassie did.
19:07I'll make certain of it.
19:09My vision started to spin.
19:11His cackling voice echoed through my brain until I couldn't think of anything else.
19:16I screamed, then threw my hands out expecting to hit something.
19:20They meant empty air.
19:22When I opened my eyes again, he was gone.
19:25A nurse came inside my room, asking if I was alright.
19:29She had heard me scream, and I weakly said I had a nightmare.
19:32Glancing over, I saw a half-eaten apple on the bedside table, proving my lie.
19:38It has been a year since that day, and I can't stop thinking about what happened.
19:43I regret meeting that monster.
19:45I regret not just talking to Cassie when I had the chance.
19:49I regret so many things.
19:51However, I'm positive that the monster was lying to me.
19:55That Cassie didn't love me like he claimed.
19:58Because if she truly did, she would have killed me.
20:10The air in Valentine's Morrow hung heavy with an otherworldly tension.
20:15As I navigated the narrow, cobblestone streets.
20:19The quaint town seemed frozen in time, with vintage lampposts casting eerie shadows,
20:25and the ancient buildings whispering secrets of a forgotten era.
20:29I had recently moved to this peculiar place, seeking solace in a town that promised a slower pace of life.
20:38Little did I know, Valentine's Morrow held a dark secret.
20:42One that would soon unravel my world.
20:45I, Jonathan Hartman, was your average guy with an affinity for solitude.
20:50My move to Valentine's Morrow was meant to be a fresh start.
20:55A quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
20:59The townsfolk, however, seemed to possess an unnatural devotion to a celebration I knew nothing about.
21:05Valentine's Day.
21:06The first sign of trouble appeared on the morning of February 14th.
21:11I awoke to find my mailbox overflowing with vibrant red envelopes adorned with heart-shaped symbols.
21:19Confused, I tossed them aside, dismissing them as an eccentric local tradition.
21:24Little did I realize the gravity of my oversight.
21:27As the day unfolded, the town began to transform.
21:31Streets, once tranquil, transformed into bustling lanes adorned with heart-shaped decorations.
21:37Shopkeepers displayed an array of loved-themed merchandise.
21:41And the townsfolk donned attire resembling Cupid's ensemble.
21:46Ignorantly, I continued my routine, oblivious to the impending disaster.
21:52It was in the quaint coffee shop, Love Brews,
21:55that I first encountered the intensity of Valentine's Morrow's obsession.
22:00The barista, a middle-aged woman with piercing blue eyes,
22:04stared at me as if I had committed a grave sin.
22:07Her words were laced with both concern and disbelief.
22:11You're not wearing red.
22:13She pointed out, her tone accusing.
22:17I chuckled nervously, glancing at my plain blue shirt.
22:20Is there some dress code for today?
22:22She sighed, her eyes narrowing.
22:26Valentine's Day isn't just a celebration here.
22:28It's a way of life.
22:30Forgetting to wear red is like turning your back on the heart of this town.
22:34You need to get changed.
22:36Confused, I left the coffee shop,
22:38vowing to pay more attention to local customs as I desperately wanted to fit in.
22:43Little did I know, this was only the beginning.
22:46As the day progressed, I noticed a growing unease amongst the townspeople.
22:52Murmurs of disappointment and frustration filled the air.
22:55It wasn't until I overheard a hushed conversation in the town square that the gravity of my ignorance struck me.
23:02The outsider forgot about Valentine's Day.
23:05A woman whispered, casting accusing glances in my direction.
23:09A sense of dread washed over me, realizing I had unwittingly defied a tradition that was more than just a
23:15celebration.
23:15It was the lifeblood of Valentine's Morrow.
23:19The clock struck midnight, marking the end of Valentine's Day.
23:23And that's when all hell broke loose.
23:25The once charming town transformed into a nightmarish landscape.
23:30Eerie shadows danced in the moonlight,
23:32and ghostly whispers filled the air, seemingly following my every step.
23:37I stumbled upon a group of townspeople engaged in a ritualistic ceremony.
23:42Their eyes filled with an otherworldly glow.
23:45The town's mayor, draped in a crimson robe, approached me with a solemn expression.
23:50I was concerned with nowhere to go.
23:52You have defied the heart of Valentine's Morrow, he declared, his voice echoing through the night.
24:01I pleaded for forgiveness, explaining my ignorance about the town's customs.
24:06The mayor's gaze, however, remained unforgiving.
24:10Valentine's Day is not just a celebration.
24:13It is our pact with the supernatural forces that keep this town alive.
24:18Without it, chaos ensues.
24:21As he spoke, the ground beneath us trembled, and grotesque creatures emerged from the shadows.
24:29The townsfolk, now possessed by an otherworldly force, surrounded me with malicious intent.
24:35In a desperate attempt to appease the enraged entities, the mayor proposed a solution.
24:40I had to perform a ritual to restore the balance and reaffirm my commitment to the town's traditions.
24:46With trembling hands, I followed their instructions, hoping to salvage what remained of my sanity.
24:52They put a red robe over me and started the ritual.
24:56They sang haunting songs about love and hearts bound together.
25:00It was all in an ancient language, but I somehow knew what they said.
25:07Each word filling me with dread.
25:10One of the creatures approached me, and I recoiled in horror.
25:13Do not reject her!
25:16Cried the mayor, so with all the strength I had left, I stood my ground.
25:20Before my eyes, it transformed into the most beautiful woman I had ever seen,
25:24and she placed a heartlock in my hand.
25:27Do you promise to wear this and keep our traditions alive, mortal?
25:32I promise.
25:33I stuttered, and immediately the locket burned a heart shape in my hand.
25:39Very well.
25:40She said with a glint in her eyes.
25:43Remember, you will be spared only once.
25:47As the last word left her lips, the town fell silent.
25:51The creatures retreated, and the possessed townsfolk returned to their normal selves.
25:55The mayor nodded in approval.
26:00A glimmer of relief in his eyes.
26:03You are lucky to be spared, outsider.
26:07Remember, in Valentine's Morrow, love is not just a choice, but a necessity for survival.
26:15You are one of us now.
26:17I left the town the next day, haunted by the supernatural encounter.
26:23Valentine's Morrow, with its dark secret and arcane traditions, was a place I could never forget.
26:30As I was driving my car, I could swear all eyes of the town were on me, and I heard
26:36a faint whisper traveling with the wind.
26:38See you next year.
