00:06He and Eve.
00:07He and Eve.
00:08Charlie...
00:09Busy, busy little bee.
00:10Chris...
00:11Sometimes you need to go old school.
00:13And Flo...
00:14Hello!
00:15...will be joined by four familiar faces from the gardening world.
00:19OK, let's gallop on then.
00:21Go on then.
00:21Yee-haw!
00:22Joe...
00:23Team Garden Rescue.
00:25Sue...
00:25We've got a little vignette of pots.
00:28Dermot...
00:28I think I've been accepted into the gap.
00:31...and Francis...
00:32You just can't beat a cherry tree.
00:34...in each garden, two of our designers will go head to head.
00:37We've decided to go for...
00:40Flo's design!
00:41Yes!
00:43Come on!
00:44...and the winning designer...
00:45Does that make me the boss?
00:47...gets a helping hand from the runner-up.
00:50Stop pulling!
00:51It's garden war!
00:52That is fantastic!
00:54...turning garden dreams into reality.
00:58Open your eyes!
00:59Oh!
01:00Oh my God!
01:00That is incredible!
01:02Oh my God!
01:04This is gorgeous!
01:06This is our garden!
01:12This is our garden!
01:13Today, the team's in Stockport tackling a garden for a growing family.
01:19Come on!
01:20Go, go, go, go!
01:20Go, go, go!
01:21Go, go, go!
01:22I'm Sasha.
01:23I'm Rick.
01:24And we're from Stockport.
01:26One, two, three!
01:27Woo-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee!
01:29So we've got a two-year-old daughter, Jocelyn.
01:33Yeah.
01:33And we have a baby boy joining us very, very soon in the next few weeks, really.
01:40And then we've got Nelly, the rescue dog, who's a huge part of the family, isn't she?
01:45Oh, yeah.
01:45She's a...
01:45Yeah, she's a smashing dog.
01:46Yeah.
01:46She really is.
01:48Two years ago, they bought their first ever home together.
01:53We moved in in 2023, and we love the house.
01:57It's an Edwardian house.
01:59We love the period features in the house.
02:03We love the fireplaces and the stained glass window, the amount of space it offers.
02:08It was a real TARDIS when we came to view it.
02:10We didn't realise how big it was.
02:12Yeah.
02:12We could just see ourselves not really outgrowing it.
02:15But it's taken Rick a bit of elbow grease and some newly learnt skills to bring it to life.
02:22DIY.
02:22It wasn't my thing, but it's definitely my thing now.
02:26But I have enjoyed it, actually.
02:28There's loads to do.
02:28It's been quite an undertaking, yeah.
02:31But the effort sprucing up their first house hasn't quite made it to their first ever garden.
02:41So, this is it.
02:42This is the garden.
02:43It really needs some love.
02:48As you can see, this is a very strange section.
02:51It's not really big enough to do anything on.
02:55Yeah, you couldn't really host in this tiny space.
02:57No.
02:58And the yard isn't safe for young legs, either.
03:01You've got the cracked concrete and then you've got these steps, which are just a big trip hazard with all
03:08different levels.
03:09And this wonky kind of wall for this weed area.
03:13And then you've got this path which just leads to nowhere.
03:20And then, obviously, we've got this pond which...
03:22It's just disused and we don't want any more with young children.
03:26No.
03:27This lawn is just ruined by jelly.
03:30Yeah, and it's a shame because this is such a nice area for the sun in the evenings.
03:35It would be great if something could happen here.
03:37Mmm.
03:37So, the couple feel it's time to give daughter Jocelyn somewhere to explore.
03:44She's into wildlife and butterflies.
03:48Yeah, we love going for walks.
03:51We always have, haven't we?
03:52And just love hearing the different sounds of the bird songs and seeing the different trees and sharing that with
03:59Jossie.
04:00A new garden can't come soon enough.
04:03It'd just be amazing to have an extra room, which a garden is, with two young children.
04:09I wouldn't even know where to start with a garden, to be honest.
04:12We massively need some help with it.
04:15It's more than a room, isn't it?
04:16It's your only outdoor space, your own little escape.
04:21So, yeah, it'd be great.
04:24Raring to create Rick and Sasha's garden is resident garden rescue designer Flo Hedlum,
04:30along with calm and contemporary designer Joe Swift.
04:35Sun's coming out, Flo. You need a hat.
04:37I need a hat.
04:38Oh, yeah.
04:39Maybe we'll get matching hats.
04:40You should see my hat now.
04:41How?
04:42Yeah.
04:45Right, so we've got Sasha and Richard.
04:48Yeah.
04:48They're leaving Stockport with their daughter Jocelyn and their dog Nelly.
04:52So, this is what we're dealing with.
04:54So, this is a view looking up at the house.
04:56Okay.
04:57So, they've got this path that just runs down the middle, cuts the whole garden.
05:00It cuts it completely in half, doesn't it?
05:02Yeah.
05:02This might be hiding something interesting.
05:04Okay.
05:05Yeah, quite a bit to reuse as well.
05:07So, it's quite a nice bit of stone on there.
05:09Yeah.
05:09And then this is the raised bed, just down from that patio, which is a great big bed for planting
05:16up.
05:16But design-wise, there's not a lot going on and there's very few plants.
05:20It's not very exciting, is it?
05:21Yeah.
05:21Because it's just a big sort of space.
05:22You just see the boundaries.
05:24Should we see what they want?
05:24Right.
05:25Let's.
05:27So, Joe and Flo, the theme of garden we'd love is an English country garden theme.
05:34We'd love loads of interesting and vibrant plants and flowers that the local wildlife would just come and visit us.
05:41Oh, that's nice.
05:42Yeah, I could get behind that.
05:44Definitely.
05:44Really behind that.
05:45We'd love to have a separated space so that in the winter months when it gets really muddy in the
05:52grass side that we could just let Nelly out to the toilet without having to constantly be wiping her feet.
05:58OK, so it's got to be practical as well.
06:00Yeah.
06:01Yeah, yeah.
06:01Yeah.
06:01And just that beginning space in the garden to have that somewhere that we host at friends and family.
06:07Everyone wants to, like, eat outside, sit outside. You know, it's part of the living outside experience, isn't it?
06:12Totally.
06:12Yeah, make it a fun, vibrant space that we just want to create loads of lovely memories as a family.
06:19Yeah.
06:19Great. That's loads of potential, isn't it? Just for creating lots of different little elements in the garden for surprise.
06:26So, Joe and Flo, I know you've got your work cut out there, but, yeah, please help us.
06:32I really like this brief. The idea is sort of a wild, almost country garden, but right in the middle
06:37of the city.
06:37And it's big enough that actually you can put lots of different elements in there.
06:41So, what's the budget, Flo?
06:424,000.
06:43OK.
06:44Yeah, which is small-ish, but there's lots of materials we can reuse.
06:49And also, you know, you want to keep a good proportion of that for the planting.
06:52Absolutely.
06:52Which is the fun bit.
06:53That's what creates the magic, isn't it?
06:55Yeah.
06:55I want to win this one.
06:56So do I.
06:57OK.
06:58Right.
07:00Getting one, then.
07:01Yeah.
07:02Flo and Joe will create designs that will meet Rick and Sasha's 4,000-pound budget.
07:08Once the favourite has been chosen, the losing designer will help with the build.
07:13A top team of landscapers will provide their labour for free, so the full budget can be spent on materials
07:20and plants.
07:26Back in Stockport, the final designs are in.
07:30OK.
07:31Right.
07:32The videos are here.
07:33Shall we watch them?
07:34Yeah.
07:35Let's do it.
07:38Sasha and Richard, this is my design for your wild English garden.
07:42I love the brief, because I love the idea of going out there and being surrounded by nature and it's
07:48a place for kids to learn and immerse themselves in flowers, butterflies, bees, the whole lot.
07:53Wow.
07:55Wow.
07:56Hi, Sasha and Richard.
07:57I'm so excited to bring you my design of an English country garden.
08:01Now, you have these lovely brick walls.
08:04They have a lot of characters, so I've kept that.
08:06But what I've done is level this whole area here so you can move from the path onto the herringbone
08:15patio step-free.
08:17Oh, that's amazing that she's addressed the steps.
08:20Yeah.
08:20So this will be an area where you can sit and this raised bed here is the perfect space for
08:28creating that wonderful country garden feel.
08:32I love all these plants here, these flowers.
08:35Yeah.
08:36Got all the colours.
08:38OK, I'm going to start from those little walls that you've already got.
08:42You're leaving those in.
08:43From there, I just want to keep this one level, making it much bigger so that you can have a
08:49table and chairs on there, the barbecue that you wanted.
08:51That becomes the main family space.
08:54But along one side here, I think this would be perfect for growing veggies, herbs, some fruit.
09:00Wow.
09:00And, you know, you can just literally pick the herbs up and cook straight with them here.
09:03So this is a sort of eating, dining, growing, cooking area.
09:08Oh, that would be nice.
09:09That would be so nice with the kids as well.
09:11Both Flo and Joe have used the first half of the garden for an entertaining area on one side and
09:18planting bed on the other.
09:20Flo, however, wants to go one step further.
09:23You also wanted a place to fire up the barbecue.
09:26And this area here is a second patio.
09:28And I've created a cupboard space.
09:30So you can sit there throughout the year.
09:33And I've given you festoon lights.
09:35And in the evening, you can imagine when you're sitting there, the lights are on.
09:38It's just, like, lovely, moody and atmospheric.
09:42You can just see yourself hosting friends and family.
09:45Yeah. It looks very spacious as well.
09:47Yeah.
09:48To divide the bottom half of the garden, Joe's using something from Rick and Sasha's wish list.
09:54I love the idea of just going through this gate, through this picket fence, and you're in the main garden
10:00area, surrounded by flowers, planting either side of the picket fence as well to really soften it.
10:05Yeah, I really like the whitest very English country garden.
10:09Then you're into a gravel path.
10:11So you're walking down the garden, meandering through the garden.
10:14You've got another seating area on the left here, built in seat with an archway.
10:19Joe's also given them an oval lawn for the family to picnic on, and space to play for Jocelyn and
10:26the new baby.
10:27Yeah, that'd be nice.
10:28Yeah, that'd be so nice when you're working from home and we can have a picnic with the kids.
10:32Yeah, that'd be brilliant.
10:33Now, the journey through the garden is no longer just a straight line, but I've used your existing stepping stones
10:39because actually they're in really good nick, and where we can, we like to reuse and recycle and repurpose.
10:44So the path goes across the garden, then lengthways, and then across the garden and lengthways again.
10:50So you're taking in different views as you're going down the garden, not forgetting that you've got a play area.
10:56Yeah, I like the idea of going down the garden like that.
11:00Every garden's got to have somewhere to go at the end.
11:03And this is maybe a storytelling area for the kids, couple of simple benches, but then as the kids grow
11:09up, it could be a perfect place for a den.
11:12You know, because you've got to have a den in a garden, right?
11:14And again, you get a lot of light.
11:16Yeah, that's where we get the light at the end.
11:18Then I'm also going to use your chimney pots, four of them, and just dot them around this seating area
11:25here.
11:26All the colours as well are just gorgeous.
11:30Flo's also giving the chimney pots a new lease of life, as well as repurposing the old pond in the
11:36corner.
11:36So I'll drain it and I'll make it into a fernery.
11:41That would be great for the wildlife and all the birds and bees to come visit.
11:45Yeah.
11:46So I've had fun using some elements that are already in your garden, but also just creating this wonderful space
11:53for you and your family to enjoy.
11:55So come on, pick me, let's do this and let's get on with it.
11:58Yeah, it does look like a great space to spend time in.
12:03Yeah, I know.
12:03A really inviting space.
12:04And then the planting, I'm so excited.
12:07There's going to be hollyhocks, delphiniums, climbers all over your boundaries and everything.
12:13And the amount of wildlife that's going to bring in is so exciting.
12:16And I just think it's going to be the perfect place for a kid to grow up.
12:21Now, I know I'm up against Flo on this, but come on.
12:24This has got to be the design, hasn't it?
12:28Wow.
12:28Wow.
12:28Oh, my God.
12:29Both of them have blown my mind.
12:32Yes.
12:32They're incredible.
12:34How are we going to choose here?
12:35I don't know.
12:36It's so tough.
12:43Right, we've got both of the designs.
12:45Have you got a favourite?
12:48I don't know.
12:49I mean, I like loads about both of them.
12:52I know.
12:52I love that Flo's really addressed some of the functional issues that we've got as a family.
12:57And I love that she's added the pergola for privacy, the festoon lights.
13:03Yeah.
13:04But then I do love Joe's English country garden.
13:08I love the vibes of both.
13:10Yeah.
13:10And lots of flowers and...
13:13God.
13:14It's really tough.
13:15What are we going to do?
13:18So, you happy with your designs now, Flo?
13:20Oh, yeah.
13:20Yeah, I think both of them are award-winning.
13:24Well, we'll see about that, won't we?
13:26Or even just winning.
13:27I'll be happy with that.
13:33Right, let's see who's won.
13:37Hi, Flo.
13:38Hi, Joe.
13:39Wow.
13:40Thank you so much for your hard work.
13:43You've absolutely blown us away with both of your designs.
13:46Oh, we're both winners already?
13:48Yeah.
13:49I guess starting with yourself, Flo.
13:51We love the festoon lights, taking that space from day to night.
13:54And we love the pergola for privacy as well.
13:58Festoon lights?
13:59Yeah.
13:59That's cheating.
14:00You can't throw them in.
14:01Wow.
14:02Joe, blown away.
14:03I love the English country vibe.
14:06You've absolutely nailed it.
14:07I love the seating areas and the herb garden and how a garden's got a destination, got somewhere
14:14to go to.
14:15I absolutely love it.
14:17It's better than I could imagine.
14:18Oh, nice.
14:19Nice.
14:20Mmm.
14:21So, I guess that brings us to who have we actually gone for?
14:27So, the design that we've gone for is...
14:33Joe!
14:34Oh!
14:35Yeah, I knew you had it.
14:37I knew you had it.
14:38No, I didn't.
14:38I thought it was going to be you.
14:39I think it was very close.
14:41Well done.
14:41Well done.
14:42Yeah, well, you're going to have to get stuck in.
14:44You've got to help me.
14:45I might do.
14:45There's a lot of planting to do, you know.
14:47See you on the build.
14:48See you there.
14:51Joe and Flo have just two days to turn Rick and Sasha's garden around.
14:56They'll be aided by an elite team of landscapers, led by project manager, Susie.
15:04Welcome to Stockport, everyone.
15:06Yeah.
15:07We've got Joe's design today.
15:08It's a fully immersive wild British country garden, which I'm very excited about.
15:13We've got a lovely picket fence going through the middle of the garden.
15:17We're going to reuse the existing brick terrace over there.
15:20Nice.
15:20Extend it using the existing flags.
15:23There's a really nice meandering self-bind path, which we're going to incorporate into
15:27the garden, and lots of lush planting.
15:30Everyone ready for it?
15:31Yes, Matt.
15:31Ready for it.
15:32Let's go.
15:34In order to create more of a blank canvas, the team get to work removing the lawn of the
15:39old pathway so the turf can be stripped.
15:42The grass is really overgrown here, and when you scrape it back, there's lots of hidden
15:45treasures under the ground, like all this granny.
15:50Susie and Danny are also uncovering hidden gems.
15:53Oh, wow.
15:54Look at that.
15:54Yeah.
15:55It's not too bad, is it?
15:56Yes.
15:57Brilliant.
15:58Bit of a wash off, and that looked really nice.
16:00That's eight square metres of the garden taken care of.
16:02Well, that's a start.
16:04That's a small battle in a big wall.
16:08As Tori clears more treasure.
16:11We found a chimney up.
16:14Susie's cracking on with getting the grass up, but there's a problem.
16:18The heavy machinery hasn't arrived.
16:21That's all right.
16:21Take care.
16:22Yeah.
16:23It's not going to turn up until 11am.
16:26Oh, Lord.
16:27It's ten past nine.
16:29That is annoying, but there's not a lot we can do about it.
16:35With the turf cutter and digger delayed, Dan's busy prepping the existing herringbone patio,
16:41ready to be levelled.
16:43Because it's just been laid the old-fashioned way, just dirt and sand, basically, it's all
16:47sort of, like, migrated.
16:48It's moved off slightly, and the gaps have opened up.
16:50So I'm just going to pick off these, sort of, the end two rows, put a better base in,
16:55and then tighten it all back up again.
16:57And then once the paving's all around it, that will hold it all in tight, so it won't
17:00be able to move again.
17:02The brick patio will be extended by nearly eight square metres, using a mix of new sandstone
17:08tiles and recycled concrete slabs.
17:12Opposite will be a vegetable patch.
17:14At the moment, it's a mound of earth and shrubbery held back by a wall.
17:19You know, sometimes you underestimate the strength of a plant.
17:23I think I just did that.
17:25In order to level it out, the team desperately need the digger.
17:29But luckily, one thing has arrived.
17:33Yay, we got some kit, lads.
17:35Woo!
17:36Finally, we can get this turf lifted.
17:39With the turf cutter on site, Kyle puts it to work.
17:45Still no digger, almost lunchtime.
17:48But we're making progress.
17:51Danny's down here just prepping the area ready for the paving.
17:56Kyle and Sam and Tori are ripping up all the lawn for us, so that clears the way for all
18:02the borders.
18:03We're just waiting on that digger for that big pile of soil there to be moved.
18:08With the digger still in transit, there's one last bit of deconstruction of the garden.
18:14The pond in the bottom corner.
18:17We're just going to take it out because Sasha and Rick have got one young kid and another
18:22one on the way.
18:23And an old pond really isn't going to be that safe for them.
18:28It looks pretty grim actually.
18:30I'm not looking forward to taking that water out.
18:34Before she has the pleasure of draining the pond, Susie must first prise out the old edging
18:40and concrete surround.
18:42It's worse than trying to get teeth out.
18:44The next step is to get the pond filled in.
18:47And just in time, there's been a delivery.
18:50Hey!
18:51It's here!
18:52It's here!
18:52Can we start digging now?
18:54Yes please.
18:54Can I start digging?
18:55I can get off my spade at last.
18:59Digger in.
19:00Dan quickly moves nearly one tonne of soil from where the vegetable patch will go into
19:06the pond to create level spaces in both areas.
19:14Despite a delayed digger, the team have romped ahead.
19:19Right, the patio's going down.
19:22I think it'll look quite cool.
19:24With the existing and new patio fixed and laid, the oval lawn is down, garden levelled
19:30and pond filled, it's time to down tools, ready for Joe and Flo's keen eye in the morning.
19:44So here we are Flo, sunny Stockport.
19:46It is sunny.
19:48Well it will be eventually.
19:49It will be, yeah.
19:50The forecast is good, that's why I've got my hat today.
19:52I've got a little pit cap as well.
19:54Bring it on, bring it on, sunshine.
19:56Yeah, I like this brief as well.
19:57The idea of sort of, you know, bringing the, a bit of the English countryside into the suburbs.
20:03And they've got a baby on the way.
20:05Right.
20:05So it's literally going to be a garden that they're going to grow with.
20:09Did you see what I did there?
20:11I've seen what you did there for.
20:12I like it.
20:12Yeah.
20:13It's going to be a good one.
20:14Yeah.
20:20Oh wow, yeah.
20:22Oh my gosh, they've been busy.
20:24Yeah, it's coming on nicely, isn't it?
20:25Oh.
20:26First thing I spot is the herringbone patio.
20:28Now it's exposed, it's a beautiful feature, isn't it?
20:31It's lovely, isn't it?
20:32Yeah, it's nice to keep an original feature like that.
20:34It keeps the essence of the garden.
20:37Mmm.
20:37So the garden's divided into three sections.
20:39We've got the seating area and the sort of vegetable potager.
20:43Potager, love it.
20:44And then there's a middle section where I want you to sort of get stuck in.
20:48Right.
20:48It's this sort of really wild English sort of feel with picket fence running through.
20:54Oh, nice.
20:54And it gets all a little bit, not Alice in Wonderland, but magical.
20:57Yeah, magical and romantic.
20:59And romantic.
21:00Oh, right.
21:01That's a bit of me, yes.
21:02And in the end section, it's got that big bay that's overgrown.
21:05I'm going to do something with that.
21:06Yeah.
21:06Make it look majestic.
21:08I'm going to make it look majestic.
21:10I'm going to try to anyway.
21:12But I want you in the middle, Flo.
21:13I'm in the middle.
21:14I want you controlling that zone.
21:15Okay.
21:15So the picket fence needs painting.
21:17You got your overalls?
21:18I'm always up for painting, yes.
21:20Excellent.
21:21I'll make do.
21:22Good, brilliant.
21:22I'm just going to go and get myself a coffee.
21:24Okay.
21:25I'm in charge, guys.
21:26As you were.
21:27Great job.
21:29Joe's first task, addressing the overgrown bay tree at the bottom of the garden.
21:35I feel like David Bellamy in here.
21:37This is a cooking bay, you know, but there's only so much you need for cooking.
21:42Mmm, smells glorious.
21:43So, yeah, the idea really is to take all this lower gross off, prune it right back to the main
21:50trunk, so that you're basically lifting the crown.
21:53Probably end up about sort of nose level, I reckon.
21:56So, I'll start with the loppers and try and make a hole so I can get in there.
22:01And it just feels a bit overgrown.
22:03It feels a bit neglected.
22:04And this is a way of sort of showing a bit of love, I guess.
22:08The aim is to reveal the main trunk, so Joe uses the loppers to remove the thinner branches.
22:14Ha!
22:14The robin's coming here with me.
22:19And uses a saw to take off the thicker stems and the remaining pegs.
22:24And also, you want to get your secateurs out and just, it's a bit finessing, we call it, just
22:31to make a nice, even sort of lower level.
22:35So, there you go.
22:36Looks good, doesn't it?
22:38It stands proud.
22:40Just got to deal with all this greenery now.
22:42Hmm.
22:43I think we'll get some help.
22:50We're repurposing these granite sets here, which form the old border along the back there,
22:55which is no more.
22:57And it's just to sort of add a bit of nice detail and delineate where this picket fence gate
23:01will go.
23:02And to buy these, you're probably talking like a pounder set or something, so it's nice to
23:08recycle them, put them to use.
23:11Right, this pink line here is the line where the picket fence is going to be.
23:16Now, in Joe's design, this is a separation from the main seating area and this middle section
23:22that he's tasked me with.
23:24So, this fencing gate is really critical because it means that Nellie, their rescue
23:27dog, can be in this part of the garden and not running around taking mucky paws back into
23:31the house.
23:32That's my job now, getting on with this.
23:34So, gloves on and I'm going to get busy.
23:37Flo needs to create eight post holes for the batons and upright slats to attach to.
23:43Uh, Team Garden Rescue.
23:46Yes, Joe.
23:47Oh, yeah, okay.
23:48Um, I want to bring the plants in.
23:50And this seems like a very sensible storage place to put them.
23:54That bit's done with, but not the slabs.
23:57So, okay, so we can go on the herringbone.
23:59Okay.
24:00So, I guess what I'm saying is, can we get any barrows off?
24:02I was just trying to be polite about it.
24:04Yeah, move this stuff, now!
24:07With space created, Flo gets a first look at Joe's selection.
24:12There's a van of plants.
24:14There's a van full of plants.
24:15Yeah, yeah.
24:15Do you reckon I left the keys in?
24:16Yeah, yeah.
24:16Go around the front.
24:17Come on, let's just drive off in it.
24:18Come on, let's have them.
24:19I'll get in the back and hold everything in place.
24:22Oh!
24:23Great selection here.
24:24Oh!
24:25Look at this viburnum.
24:26They're gorgeous, they're gorgeous.
24:27I just love that sea of green with just those little sort of pops of colour.
24:32Those purples, that lovely claret in the naughtier.
24:37And lots of whites to go with the picket, you know, keep it light and airy.
24:40Yeah, absolutely.
24:41And romantic.
24:42And romantic, of course.
24:44Romantic, I'm taking that theme.
24:44Yeah, lovely.
24:45And there's a couple of trees on it.
24:46We've got an apple tree.
24:47Mm-hmm.
24:47There's a nice big birch for the back right-hand corner.
24:50Yeah.
24:50They've got the lot in here.
24:51They've got the lot.
24:52So we better get them off.
24:53Better get them off.
24:53Look at these beautiful ferns and that ornamental grass.
24:57Ooh!
24:59Lush!
25:09That's a four-metre tree.
25:10That is instant impact if ever I've seen it.
25:13Plants unloaded, Flo can carry on installing the posts for the picket fence.
25:18Let me do that.
25:19Let me do that.
25:20I'll do the heavy bit.
25:22Already you can see the delineation between this part of the garden and the rest of the garden is taking
25:28shape.
25:28Water.
25:31Tory and Fleur are using quick-setting concrete, which hardens in about five minutes.
25:36With all your timber cut up and all your dimensions, you could do this job in an afternoon, I think,
25:41and really create something special in the garden.
25:45And that white is going to be picked up not only in the fence and the gate, but in the
25:49arbor as well and in the planting.
25:51So the whole thing's going to tie together.
25:54I think Joe's done really well with this design.
25:59Whilst Flo focuses on the romantic part of the garden, Joe's in the more practical patch.
26:05Yeah, I'm quite excited about this area.
26:08This is the sort of potager, vegetable, edible area, some herbs, a bit of a mishmash.
26:15We're going to give them some starters.
26:17So, you know, some structural plants like these white currants.
26:22And then things like this, which is lettuce, just to get them going for the year.
26:28And the idea is it changes every year.
26:31You know, you sow some plants, you grow some plants, you eat some plants, you replenish them all.
26:36I think the kids are just going to love it.
26:38Come out of the back door, pick some stuff, eat it, get involved in the garden.
26:43You know, it's fantastic.
26:47As well as food to get the kids' imagination going, Joe's designed a destination at the end for storytelling.
26:55Something that caught Rick and Sasha's attention.
26:57For me, I'm really excited to see what's at the end of the garden.
27:02When Joe said a garden should have somewhere to get to, that's something I've never heard before.
27:09Dan is busy making the benches for it.
27:12We've got regular sleepers that you can buy at most builders' merchants.
27:15These ones are just as they come, sort of like graded.
27:19You can buy beautiful, plain and finished sleepers.
27:23They cost about twice as much as this.
27:25But we can make these ones look as nice as the expensive ones just by powerplaning them and sanding them.
27:31And then it takes all of the splintery bits off of them and just gives it a really nice feel
27:35to perch on at the bottom of the garden.
27:37It'd be lovely.
27:38With a finished sleeper around £25 more expensive a piece, planing and sanding it yourself can be very cost effective.
27:55Halfway through and the team are making good progress.
27:59The upright panels are going up on the fence.
28:03The gravel path is down.
28:04Here we go, let's lift.
28:06Oh!
28:06And the ready-built arbor is lifted into place.
28:09To me, to me.
28:10To you, to you, to you.
28:11You all right?
28:12Yeah, yeah, I'm glad there's a path here.
28:14At around £230, it's an efficient way to add seating and interest, eventually being enveloped in climbers.
28:22Oh!
28:24Just!
28:27So this is exciting, the first plant that's going into the garden and it's an apple tree.
28:32This is apple Fuji and Fuji is sweet, crisp, slightly honey flavoured apple.
28:40And it's going to sort of set the tone for the edible garden.
28:44So I'm just going to check the depth so that when this is planted, it's the same depth that it
28:52is in the pot that it's in.
28:54So that's going to work nicely.
28:57And let's see what we've got as far as roots are concerned.
29:00We've got these feeding roots.
29:02I might just tease them out very gently.
29:05You know, if they're really pot bound, you want to tease them out.
29:08And I'm going to mix some of the compost in with the soil that I'm going to backfill with.
29:17And then just dragging it over, backfilling it.
29:20Yeah.
29:22Just, I'm going to lightly tread.
29:25And there you go.
29:27First plant in the garden.
29:29Really satisfying.
29:30What a lovely apple tree.
29:38Continuing with the trees, Joe's planting a four metre high birch to add privacy.
29:45Oh yeah.
29:46Can you stay there and I'll do the old, um, I see myself as a, you know, conductor.
29:50It's tall, isn't it?
29:52Yeah, because I'm six foot eight.
29:55Yeah.
29:56That's lovely.
29:57With Flo adding the final bits of white to the picket fence.
30:02Yes.
30:04Et voila.
30:05The transformation is coming together.
30:08Kyle's compacting nearly two tonnes of self-binding gravel to complete the path.
30:14And Joe's packing his patch full of produce.
30:20All right, I think a couple more of these strawberries over here would be great.
30:25Now, this is the potager area.
30:28I'm really excited about this.
30:29I've got to say, basically potager is all edibles pretty much mixed together.
30:34There's some sweet corn in here, thyme, sage, coriander, and then there's the apple tree of course.
30:40The soil's already good in this area, which is, which is crucial really for these vegetables.
30:45And also it gets plenty of sun and that's key as well.
30:48But I'm planting some of these summer fruiting raspberries.
30:51You don't have to get obsessed with pruning regimes.
30:54They will flower and fruit anyway, but you will get more if you prune properly.
30:59And the key is just give them loads of compost when they start,
31:02because they do like a bit of moisture at the roots.
31:04And then when they start producing fruit, just start picking them.
31:08It's really that simple.
31:12Never plant these too shallowly.
31:14If anything, a little bit deeper, because they will produce from the roots.
31:18And I'm spacing them about, I don't know, what's that, about 50, 60 centimetres, couple of feet apart.
31:23Also they'll get to about six feet high, so they will need staking.
31:27But they're going to create a nice little hedge at the front of the garden here.
31:30So screen off the house from the garden a little bit.
31:33But you can't go wrong really with raspberries.
31:35They are tough, hardy plants.
31:38And like I say, they will produce fruit pretty much whatever you do to them.
31:47As Joe continues in the potager, Flo is romancing the arbour area.
31:53So this viburnum Kilimanjaro is looking stunning in this garden and in full flower now.
32:00And it's one of the early flowering viburnums.
32:02And it's just that sort of burst of summers here.
32:06Look at that beautiful habit.
32:07It's like a wedding cake, tiered and actually quite a light canopy so you can see through it.
32:13In this part of the garden, what it does, it ties together that whole theme of the romance.
32:20The white picks up the picket fence.
32:22It picks up the arbour seat and just sits here and gives this whole space quite a big presence and
32:30an identity.
32:31I love it.
32:33Bivurnums are great.
32:34It's a family of so many different varieties that are evergreen or deciduous.
32:41Really easy to grow as well.
32:43So, we'll grow in any aspect, whether it's sun, part shade or shade.
32:48And this particular Kilimanjaro, I think, is a stunner.
32:52And I'm sure Sasha and Rick are going to be blown away.
33:07Well, there's lots of real glamour queens in this garden.
33:11There's roses.
33:12We've got the beautiful viburnum over there.
33:14But you also need plants that are going to play a supporting role.
33:17And this plant I put in pretty much every garden.
33:20This is Mexican fleabane, Erigeron carvinscianus.
33:25And, well, it's doing its thing right now.
33:27Look at it.
33:27Lovely, pretty daisy flowers.
33:29It's perfect for just breaking up the edge of paving or, you know, at the bottom of a wall.
33:35And it'll just seed around.
33:36And if you go to the West Country, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, you'll see it in the walls there, in the
33:42hedgerows there.
33:43Just seeded around perfectly happy.
33:45And this one's going in right here.
33:53Beautiful.
33:55Oh, my knees crunch, crunch.
34:06Right, so into place.
34:08Back over at the arbor, Flo's reusing old chimney pots to add height and fragrance.
34:15Just about here.
34:17Yeah.
34:18Oh, my gosh, the smell is amazing.
34:21Now, everyone should have some mint in their garden.
34:23It's really easy to grow.
34:25But it's best to put it in a pot because, in open ground, it can get a bit vigorous and
34:31a bit invasive.
34:32Now, mint is a thirsty plant, so you have to be watering it regularly for it to stay good, look
34:39good.
34:39And mint is wonderful as, you know, a medicinal plant, great in tea, great in cocktails, great in salads.
34:49Pot it up and then pop it in there like so.
34:56And it's already taking up space in this beautiful pot.
35:00What a place to perform in, eh?
35:07The finish line's almost in sight.
35:10With the bench in place and final few tweaks, Flo and Jo can call it a day.
35:20Oh, thank you.
35:22Feels good to sit down, doesn't it?
35:24I'm exhausted, Flo.
35:26Welcome to Garden Rescue.
35:28Yeah, well, at my age, you know.
35:30At your age.
35:32It looks good, though.
35:33It looks really great.
35:35Our picket fence is a winner.
35:38It transforms the garden, but it also, you know, offsets everything on either side of it.
35:43And the idea is the dog will be in one area or the other, or might just leap right over
35:47the top of it, who knows.
35:49Yeah, it feels like, you know, you do go through the gate and you enter a slightly different private world,
35:54which is lovely.
35:55Yeah.
35:56It's definitely two rooms, isn't it?
35:57Yeah.
35:58Oh, this robin's been around all day.
35:59This robin.
36:01It's good luck.
36:01It's a good luck robin.
36:04Oh, the bell's ringing.
36:05The bell tolls.
36:06Time to get them out.
36:07Yeah.
36:07Yeah, I'm going to go and get them out and see what they think.
36:13Sasha and Rick's garden was unsafe and uninspiring for children, with uneven steps, a mound of bare earth and a
36:21path to an old pond.
36:26but with their 4 000 pound budget this english country oasis is now somewhere for little legs
36:34and minds to explore with a vegetable patch new entertaining area and lawn and seated hideaway
36:43at the bottom
36:47one more step down yeah to the left okay yeah one more step down to the left
36:56so would you like to open your eyes and have a look oh my goodness wow wow it's amazing i
37:05feel like i've
37:06been transported somewhere else not in our garden it is amazing wow absolutely amazing this is perfect
37:15the fence is incredible it feels wider as well like it feels bigger they're right it is bigger
37:20it does feel bigger particularly this side because it's just really open now before sasha and rick
37:27had nowhere to entertain with debris covering a small paved area rendered unusable
37:35now they have the space to barbecue and dine
37:40the old herringbone brickwork has been uncovered and refurbished and it's been extended using rick and
37:48sasha's existing slabs the steps have also been leveled to make access child-friendly
37:54we've reconditioned a bit your herringbone but you know it's nice to keep something original yeah
38:00it's much more practical and generous yeah so hopefully you know you'll spend quite a bit of time
38:05out here yeah definitely and even just like nelly and when it gets dead muddy at least she's not
38:10bringing in all that mud in the house you've got the fence to just corner her off oh yeah the
38:15picket
38:16fence and the gate just means that nelly can stay this side and just have their own space before a
38:25higgledy-piggledy wall kept back a mound of earth now joe's created a vegetable patch teeming with
38:33produce which will provide food and education for the family so this is sort of the veggie area through
38:41here what we got here what we got some raspberries you got some uh red currants you just got some
38:47salad leaves through it's nothing to get freaked out about it's really simple gardening yeah um all
38:52edible stuff and some of it you'll have to replenish every year um but some of it like the raspberries
38:57i
38:57mean you know you just have to prune them back really and then eat the raspberries just enjoy it
39:01and just come and pick them and sit there and you know amazing eat away you know absolutely yeah and
39:08the apple tree is nice there it's it will just hold that space nicely yeah so we should go through
39:13the magic garden gate yeah let's do it it's not real it's all just it's just an image it doesn't
39:19actually
39:23what once was a long boring part of the garden lacking identity and plants
39:31now is a white picket fence providing a gateway to a romantic escape with swathes of pretty plants to
39:39attract wildlife a tall birch now provides privacy and joe's pruned bay tree stands proud
39:49they can overlook their oval lawn perfect for picnicking from their cute little love seat
39:56oh this is so perfect wow so sturdy it works well because you i mean normally i wouldn't divide a
40:03garden up but actually what you do feel like you're entering a different way so come on then you've got
40:07to sit down wow this is i love this yeah try sitting down try relaxing cushion as well wow yeah
40:14yeah i love
40:15this this is this is amazing i love it matching with the fence as well but it gives you a
40:20nice perspective
40:20on the garden from there as well and i thought with the kids if they're playing on the lawn it's
40:24just
40:24somewhere to observe them or or to sit and read stories oh my goodness and that lawn's just a
40:29perfect size with picnics and kids just to play on yeah the kids are going to love it it is
40:34a garden
40:35for kids to just like explore and just develop in it well come on get up you two you can't
40:42sit there
40:42so there's another but there's another spot down the bottom here so yeah this is a really sociable space
40:47because you've got two benches opposite each other yeah i thought maybe sort of a bit storytelling down
40:52here you know for the kids and and as they grow up a little private space for them to not
40:59hide in
40:59but just to get away from you two yeah you know but feeling safe in the garden as well yeah
41:05it
41:05definitely does that yeah it's fantastic incredible and this is where the most sun gets doesn't it
41:12this is the last bit of sun usually yeah it just makes you want to have friends and family over
41:16and
41:17yeah hosting i can't wait to get people around yeah oh that's brilliant actually being able to use
41:23their garden is such a plus for like family life nice one so has it been worth it a hundred
41:31million
41:31percent i can't thank you enough yeah thank you so much thanks to all the team it's beyond the dream
41:39isn't it yeah i didn't think this would be possible yeah honestly this is going to make such a difference
41:44to our lives yeah it's amazing we should get flow in really she's probably listening in flow come on
41:55we're right down the end here through the gate it's a long way to come now hello thank you so
42:03much
42:04it's incredible oh it's beautiful isn't it yeah it's beautiful i feel like i've been transported to
42:10somewhere not in stockport yeah yeah yeah picket fence right yeah amazing yeah like makes oh gosh it
42:23just brings it to life the english country garden i bet you can't wait to show jocelyn and nelly in
42:29that
42:29order the garden so we'll leave you to it oh can't wait enjoy it it's incredible thank you
42:42what do you think jossie wow do you want to open do we open wow have you seen it nelly
42:54isn't it
42:55beautiful do you like it do you like it look at nelly on the lawn are you gonna have picnics

43:05with your brother it's just beyond what we expected like we really wanted an english country
43:11garden but this is just like from our dreams i can't believe this is in our garden absolutely buzzing
43:25wow oh just be gentle just gentle
