00:00:01Good morning.
00:00:02Good morning, it's Friday.
00:00:03Morning, usually I script these cold opens, but I neglected to do so today, so tell everyone what we got.
00:00:08You're not doing your job.
00:00:09Albert Poole's number five in studio.
00:00:11I'm also number five, by the way, for the brewers.
00:00:14We've got a couple of Marlins.
00:00:16Yes.
00:00:16And take out me to the ballgame pizza donut.
00:00:19Yes.
00:00:19What else?
00:00:20Pat Murphy.
00:00:21Pat Murphy, yes.
00:00:22We just chat with him.
00:00:23Now, everyone knows I forgot your birthday last week, but tell everyone what I got you to do.
00:00:28You're supposed to give gifts and finally got me $50 to Sephora, but now it ruins it.
00:00:33It's either $50 or $500.
00:00:35I don't know which one.
00:00:36I know which one.
00:00:39It's $500.
00:00:56There you go.
00:00:57Thank goodness it is Friday.
00:00:59We are ready for you from Studio 21, MLB Central, presented by Blue Buffalo.
00:01:04Good morning.
00:01:05Don't go spending that gift certificate all in one place, Lauren.
00:01:08Drop the gift certificate on it.
00:01:09What did you get me?
00:01:10So now I've got to get her something.
00:01:11Yeah.
00:01:12Well, I just felt bad because I forgot the birthday.
00:01:15You gave her the birthday greeting on time.
00:01:17That's your gift.
00:01:18No, he did not.
00:01:18He was 24 hours late.
00:01:20That are you not.
00:01:20Once again, you were in international waters.
00:01:23My button on my pants just popped.
00:01:26What do I do?
00:01:27I'm not sure.
00:01:28I have gaff tape.
00:01:29I mean, what are you trying to do here?
00:01:31Like, come on.
00:01:32This is a re-air show.
00:01:34Oh, what does that mean?
00:01:35We had team bonding yesterday.
00:01:36We did.
00:01:37I had high hopes for our team building.
00:01:39You guys don't believe in it.
00:01:40You guys make it out to be something it doesn't need to be.
00:01:44That's the bottom line.
00:01:45That's me.
00:01:45I wanted ropes, cores, hop on, hop off, you know, golf or something like that.
00:01:52Golf was on the table.
00:01:53You chose not to.
00:01:55I didn't know that we were still following.
00:01:57Instead, we ended up at Chipotle.
00:01:59Roll it.
00:02:00Here's the scene.
00:02:02How's team building, Robert?
00:02:04I mean, it's great.
00:02:05There's evidence by this bowl from Chipotle.
00:02:10Classic Chibotle.
00:02:11Classic.
00:02:12Double chicken.
00:02:13Double chicken.
00:02:15I would have.
00:02:16I want a heaping.
00:02:18That's right.
00:02:19Heaping.
00:02:20Were they a little stingy?
00:02:21No, they were good.
00:02:22They were good.
00:02:23She was an absolute sweetheart out there.
00:02:25Great.
00:02:26You would have what, Robert?
00:02:28Huh?
00:02:28You would have what?
00:02:29You want something different?
00:02:29I would have not put beans in there, but.
00:02:32For me.
00:02:33For me.
00:02:34I didn't order.
00:02:35You were gracious enough to do that for me.
00:02:37Next time, no beans.
00:02:38I would have gone no beans, but that's just me.
00:02:43Duly noted.
00:02:45We're at Harmon Cove, Secaucus, New Jersey.
00:02:47I was running late.
00:02:48Where I used to go take dates.
00:02:52What?
00:02:53That's why I love working here.
00:02:56I grew up two towns over.
00:02:58You took them to Harmon Cove?
00:03:00You took your dates to Chipotle?
00:03:01See that movie theater there?
00:03:03I used to be banging back in the day.
00:03:06In the late 80s, early 90s.
00:03:08You did your best work there.
00:03:10You had Whitesnake on?
00:03:12Here I go again on my own.
00:03:15All right.
00:03:16So who's doing the banging?
00:03:17What was going on?
00:03:18All making sense.
00:03:19Well, long story short, watching you yesterday come jumping and meandering across the parking
00:03:29lot like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible, full suit, aviators.
00:03:34The people were looking at you differently.
00:03:36They were like, who's this schmo?
00:03:38Who's this double chicken?
00:03:40He goes, look at this jabroni.
00:03:42Look at this jabroni.
00:03:44You're in a Chipotle.
00:03:45Calm down.
00:03:46Calm down.
00:03:46For God's sakes.
00:03:48I love the game.
00:03:49Let's let go.
00:03:49On a Friday, I love the game for many reasons.
00:03:52Orioles fans, if you need a reason to believe that things are going to go your way, you see
00:03:58this.
00:03:59This fan was front and center and caught not in one.
00:04:03Yeah, they're just bros being bros.
00:04:06So jacked up about it.
00:04:07Why is that short here?
00:04:08I love it.
00:04:09Yeah, me too.
00:04:10And what's great, show him, Lauren.
00:04:12Show him what happened next.
00:04:13Gave it away.
00:04:14Yeah.
00:04:15So he gets a home run ball, then he gets the ground rule double, and he gives the second
00:04:19ball that he got to that lovely young lady there.
00:04:22That's nice.
00:04:23That's a nice sentiment.
00:04:25Good job, guys.
00:04:26Girl in the game.
00:04:27There you go.
00:04:27One baseball game at a time.
00:04:31Wake it up, America.
00:04:32On a Friday, you want to go to beautiful PNC Park?
00:04:35The Cubs have that long losing streak.
00:04:37They're looking to put it even further in the rear view.
00:04:40The problem is they ran into this buzzsaw on Paul Skeens, making his 12th start of the
00:04:46season, striking out 10 batters, including seven of the first eight batters he faced.
00:04:52We're taking some chances with this editing of this.
00:04:55I like it.
00:04:55I like that smile, too.
00:04:57I like it.
00:04:58Skeens allowed only four hits over five innings pitched.
00:05:02And Craig Council said, Skeens is so tough, you're not getting extra opportunities.
00:05:05Alex Bregman, top of the sixth, reaches on an error.
00:05:09So there's runners on first and second.
00:05:13And the next batter is Ian Hap.
00:05:15G. Rowe, you always say it.
00:05:16If you put the ball in play, you give yourself a chance.
00:05:18Ball in play is a dangerous baseball.
00:05:21Dangerous baseball.
00:05:22Michael Bush scores back-to-back errors.
00:05:24Paul Skeens, it's birthday today.
00:05:2624.
00:05:28Happy birthday, Paul.
00:05:29Happy birthday.
00:05:29I will never forget Paul Skeens.
00:05:31How dare you.
00:05:32You get the standing ovation.
00:05:34Want some insurance.
00:05:35Ian Hap in the top of the eighth with a runner on first.
00:05:38He plays hero once again.
00:05:40Cubs needed back-to-back wins, and they got them.
00:05:43Cubs go to St. Louis for a weekend set.
00:05:46Here's Ian Hap on the heroics on Thursday.
00:05:50I think we did a good job of just having some action, having guys on base.
00:05:55We've put up tough at-bats against him.
00:05:56He's a tough guy to hit a bunch of rockets against.
00:05:58He just doesn't give up a lot of hard-hit baseball.
00:06:01So, you know, for us to, you know, push a couple of good walks, you know,
00:06:04the soft-serve singles, but being able to produce runs, you know,
00:06:07you just need people on base, and so we took advantage of those opportunities.
00:06:11Collin Ray was awesome.
00:06:12I mean, he did such a good job.
00:06:13And then the bullpen coming in and shutting that down, you know,
00:06:16we needed that, and they've been awesome.
00:06:18It felt good for us to pick them up.
00:06:21All right, let's go to Fenway for the Braves and the Red Sox.
00:06:23Chris Sale facing his former club.
00:06:26Home half of the first.
00:06:27He's got runners at first and second and two outs.
00:06:30He has been excellent this year with runners in scoring position.
00:06:33It's so crazy to go back and think.
00:06:36Two years ago, Chris Sale's in the Red Sox.
00:06:38You're right.
00:06:39Vaughn Grissom.
00:06:41Salary dump.
00:06:43He comes to Atlanta, and now it's looking like Hall of Fame Central.
00:06:47Oh, absolutely.
00:06:47He gets out of another jam in the second and then to the sixth run of Acuna Jr.
00:06:52His third home run of the season.
00:06:53It's a grand slam.
00:06:54A kiss for the bat.
00:06:56And the Braves take a 7-2 lead.
00:06:59Acuna becoming the first Brave in the modern era with a grand slam and multiple stolen bases in the same
00:07:05game.
00:07:05Money Mike, Michael Harris the second.
00:07:08His 13th.
00:07:10He's got 13.
00:07:11Good for him.
00:07:138-2 Atlanta in the ninth.
00:07:16Ozzie Alves.
00:07:16He adds to the total.
00:07:18Braves win 10-2 over the Red Sox.
00:07:22Braves are in Cincinnati to begin a weekend set against the Reds.
00:07:27And to the south side of Chicago, where the White Sox are a few games over .500.
00:07:31They have had a winning month.
00:07:33And Colson Montgomery trying to continue it.
00:07:36Bottom of the first with a man on second.
00:07:38White Sox on the board.
00:07:40First with two outs and a strike.
00:07:42An RBI single up the middle.
00:07:44And it's Chicago out to a 1-0 lead.
00:07:47Randall Britchick's been really good in this uniform.
00:07:49Bottom of the third.
00:07:50Base is loaded.
00:07:51He had a day.
00:07:51Clear them all.
00:07:53And base is clear and double down the right field line.
00:07:56Second-four-team fastball he saw on the White Sox extend their lead 5-0.
00:08:01I think Minutaka's famous.
00:08:03I think we need to know more about him.
00:08:05Yeah, he needs to be on this show.
00:08:07He needs to be on our show.
00:08:08Bottom of the fourth man on second.
00:08:10Oh, tough play.
00:08:12And the run scores from second.
00:08:14So one more run on the board.
00:08:16And Robert, your boy, it seems like it's every night.
00:08:188-1 is Davis Martin.
00:08:19In his last start, he gave up a season-high five runs.
00:08:23But he was excellent again yesterday.
00:08:25And he talks about the confidence he's pitching with this season.
00:08:29And you're seeing it play out in real time.
00:08:316-2 on the south side of Chicago.
00:08:33White Sox above .500.
00:08:35They had a winning month for the first time since 2023.
00:08:38And I look inside, there's season splits.
00:08:41There's so much to like, Dero.
00:08:42And can I tell you why I love this show?
00:08:44For many reasons.
00:08:45But I went to go see Eric Nays researching the stars yesterday.
00:08:49And I said, what are you doing?
00:08:51And he was knee-deep in Miguel Vargas notes.
00:08:54He was.
00:08:54He was cooking up a manifesto on the guy behind you at the skybox.
00:08:58Look, make no mistake about it.
00:08:59Eric Nays should be running someone's analytics department.
00:09:02We'll keep him now.
00:09:03In game planning.
00:09:04But that would break my soul.
00:09:05I'm going to need him to continue to crank out these research packets.
00:09:09He came to me with a Miguel Vargas about three, four days ago.
00:09:13And it had weight on it.
00:09:14It was like six, seven pages.
00:09:16I said, Nays, this got to be an eight-minute skybox.
00:09:19He goes, I need you to honor Miguel Vargas.
00:09:22So we'll do it.
00:09:22That's what we're going to do.
00:09:24All right, let's get into it.
00:09:25Give me a front-end, Lucas Ortega.
00:09:27We have boards galore coming up.
00:09:29Bottom line, he comes over in a trade two years ago from the Dodgers.
00:09:34And I can remember it like it was yesterday.
00:09:37You imagine going from the Dodgers, whether you're playing every day or not,
00:09:40and going to a full White Sox rebuild.
00:09:42He's sitting on the bench in the dugout.
00:09:46And you're seeing almost like the game, the love of the game be ripped from him.
00:09:51He's regrouped.
00:09:53Chris Getz is regrouped.
00:09:54Will Venable's regrouped.
00:09:56There's life on the south side of Chicago.
00:09:58And he's right in the middle, wedged in between Murakami and Colson Montgomery.
00:10:02Think he's going to get pitches to hit?
00:10:04And since the start of April 19th, look at his ranks.
00:10:09Bombs, he's seventh with 10.
00:10:11On base, he's eighth.
00:10:13He's a top 10, top 15 hitter since April 19th.
00:10:16Hot change me to third base ranks.
00:10:21Miguel Vargas, season stats right here.
00:10:24The top three third baseman in the entire sport.
00:10:28Does a lot of things really well.
00:10:30We're going to do side angles, stance changes, hammers left-handed pitching,
00:10:35which I'm not surprised.
00:10:37Hammers the pitch inside.
00:10:39A lot of contact, not a lot of chase.
00:10:42It's exactly what Nays loves.
00:10:44He'd be signing this guy up.
00:10:46All right, let's get into it.
00:10:47So, like I said, a lot of hard contact.
00:10:50A little bullet off Logan Gilbert right there on Kids Day.
00:11:00A little Jameson Tyone heater, 94, top of the zone.
00:11:05So, a lot of barrels and not a lot of chasing outside the zone.
00:11:11I'm going to walk you through after we get through a rip right here.
00:11:14Yesterday, he goes 0 for 3, but works a walk to get the boys started.
00:11:19The rally starts here off Simeon Woods Richardson.
00:11:23And you think nothing of it.
00:11:250-0 curveball, strike one.
00:11:26He goes down 2-0.
00:11:28There's two outs.
00:11:31And he works it all the way back to a walk.
00:11:35Tough pitch to take right there.
00:11:37Walks to first base.
00:11:38Boom.
00:11:39I'm stealing second with Colson Montgomery up.
00:11:42Put myself in scoring position.
00:11:44Bottom of the first.
00:11:45Next thing you know, ground ball with eyes.
00:11:47And it's 1-0.
00:11:49I'll take you back to Jose Soriano.
00:11:52One at bat leads to the next.
00:11:54This is the guy that controls the strike zone.
00:11:56We all know how good Soriano's been.
00:11:59Look at those.
00:11:59Two paint pellets at 97 and 99.
00:12:03And now he goes to work.
00:12:04Gets back in the count.
00:12:062-2.
00:12:073-2.
00:12:08Can you execute?
00:12:09Fouls it off.
00:12:11And is able to work the walk.
00:12:13One at bat leads to the next.
00:12:15Now I've seen your heater.
00:12:16There it is again.
00:12:1895, four seam away.
00:12:2096, four seam away.
00:12:21Give it to me.
00:12:22Boom.
00:12:23Bullet.
00:12:27Take a look at these two boards.
00:12:31The chase rate and the barrel rate.
00:12:34Look at Miguel Vargas.
00:12:36Barrels it up 88 percentile.
00:12:39And look at the chase.
00:12:40One of the best in the game.
00:12:41Mike Trout, Torkelson, Nick Kurtz, James Wood, Murakami, and Juan Soto.
00:12:49I want to talk about him hammering the inside stuff.
00:12:53Okay?
00:12:53Let's get into it.
00:12:55Mason Flewhardy.
00:12:56Because this has opened up for him.
00:12:58And we'll get into his side angle.
00:13:00Not that easy for him to cover the inside stuff.
00:13:03He's been having to make some serious adjustments.
00:13:06Because he's got some Ronald Acuna barrel dumpage in his game.
00:13:11But it plays, man.
00:13:16Handling the ball on the inside half of the plate.
00:13:19Here's Eduardo Rodriguez trying to get in.
00:13:21We've seen him do this all year.
00:13:24We talk about it.
00:13:26Lefties.
00:13:26The ability to drive the ball in on righties.
00:13:29Not against him.
00:13:31Pretty simple move at the plate.
00:13:33Run that back for me and do it slow.
00:13:36Run it.
00:13:39Pause.
00:13:39Now slow click it.
00:13:46Right there.
00:13:49When we were coming up, that move right there.
00:13:53And we'll have Albert Pujols come down.
00:13:56We were thinking top hand, down, and through the baseball.
00:14:00Now, looking at it and staying behind it, you're seeing a lot of guys almost give this small C to
00:14:09drop this elbow into the slot and keep them behind.
00:14:13Just a little bit of different thinking.
00:14:16We thought more top hand.
00:14:17He definitely thinks a little bit more bottom hand in this swing.
00:14:22Gracious.
00:14:23Gorgeous swing right there.
00:14:24Slug percentage leaders on inside pitches.
00:14:27Ben Rice is at the top.
00:14:28But Miguel Vargas is in there as well.
00:14:31How about back speed increase?
00:14:34Largest increase in back speed last two seasons among qualifiers.
00:14:38Cam Smith, Matt McClain.
00:14:40What does that come from?
00:14:43When you lunge, your back speed is going to be a little lighter.
00:14:47So, it's just getting your body to move biomechanically the proper way is going to create more bat speed.
00:14:54But usually, staying behind it and being more explosive instead of jumping at the baseball will certainly help you.
00:15:01All right.
00:15:02Let's get back into the – see if he's made any – pause this.
00:15:05Stance changes.
00:15:06So, when he first came over after the trade, you see him much wider.
00:15:12Also, he's moved his hands up, which kind of unlocked him.
00:15:16He said that right around this Mays, April-ish, when he raised his hands up of last year and got
00:15:23rolling.
00:15:23So, run this.
00:15:26Just more athletic in his stance.
00:15:28Kind of giving me Evan Longoria vibes.
00:15:30They're even higher now, D.
00:15:32Yeah, way higher now.
00:15:33Wow.
00:15:35And it's safe to say, you show me a good right-hand hitter that can move the ball gap to
00:15:42gap.
00:15:42I know he's hitting a ton of stuff pull side in the air, but it's very hard with a guy
00:15:47with this type of approach to get beat in by lefties that don't have cut in off the plate.
00:15:53And you're seeing a lot of left-handed pitchers in these rips try and go inside on him, and they're
00:15:59just not able to execute.
00:16:00That's like BP staying through it.
00:16:05Pretty awesome.
00:16:07Been a nice, underappreciated player, kind of what we've been seeing, right?
00:16:13We've been on the Murakami train.
00:16:15OPS leaders versus left-handed pitching this season.
00:16:17He's one.
00:16:19What jumped out at me is Corbin Carroll's a lefty.
00:16:22He's two.
00:16:25And Nays is saying he's good protection for those lefty pitchers for Murakami.
00:16:30I love watching stance changes that are that significant, just constantly working and tinkering.
00:16:36We're going to have Xavier Edwards come in with Otto Lopez later.
00:16:40He's done some – he's changing himself up.
00:16:41We'll ask him about it.
00:16:42He's also a big Minnesota Vikings fan.
00:16:45Vargas?
00:16:45Yeah, Miguel Vargas.
00:16:47Also, we should –
00:16:48But D.
00:16:49D.
00:16:49D.
00:16:49D.
00:16:49D.
00:16:49D.
00:16:49D.
00:16:49D.
00:16:51D.
00:16:51D.
00:16:52D.
00:16:52Well, when the two questions are J.J. McCarthy or Kyler Murray –
00:16:56Yeah, you're in trouble.
00:16:58No?
00:16:59Yeah.
00:17:00Hey, our talented A.D. Mags had this astute observation.
00:17:05You know, back in 2020, we lost one of our great entertainers, Adolfo Quinones, a.k.a.
00:17:11Shabadoo, from the break-in series, break-in, and of course, break-in to Electric Boogaloo.
00:17:18Electric Boogaloo.
00:17:19Yeah, there is a striking resemblance between Miguel Vargas and Adolfo Quinones, who passed
00:17:23away in 2020.
00:17:25Lauren, I'm sure you're very familiar with break-in and the whole franchise.
00:17:28I actually saw Boogaloo.
00:17:29Anything you're talking about.
00:17:30What you just said, Adolfo.
00:17:32What was the other guy's name in Electric Boogaloo?
00:17:34I believe his name is Turbo?
00:17:38That's it.
00:17:39Turbo.
00:17:39Boom.
00:17:40That's it.
00:17:40All right, let's take a quick timeout.
00:17:43Coming up next, Mark Feinstein is going to join us for the latest on the CBA negotiations
00:17:46between the players and the owners.
00:17:48And on deck, Brewer skipper Pat Murphy is set to join us.
00:17:53What's been going right for his Brewers as they begin a series this weekend in America's
00:17:58most beautiful city, Houston, Texas?
00:17:59What's it like watching Jacob Mizorowski?
00:18:02And has he gotten around to telling Sal Freelich that he loves him yet?
00:18:07And later, in our second hour, yeah, we're going to have a little AP history.
00:18:13Albert Pujols is set to join the show.
00:18:17How well does he know his own soon-to-be Hall of Fame career?
00:18:22And in the second hour, they're one of the best double play combinations in the game.
00:18:27Miami Marlins, Otto Lopez, and Xavier Edwards join us in studio to talk about the fish
00:18:34and to play a little Central Scribs.
00:18:38How do we feel about that eight block?
00:18:40I like it.
00:18:41Me too.
00:18:4218 minutes?
00:18:43Nice.
00:18:44I gave him a go, Marcus, the love he deserves.
00:18:46Absolutely.
00:18:48How's that button treatment?
00:18:58On Wednesday, the MLB Players Association made its initial proposal in collective bargaining
00:19:03agreement talks.
00:19:05Thursday, Major League Baseball presented the union with an initial proposal of its own,
00:19:09which includes a salary cap and floor.
00:19:13Major League Baseball released the following statement.
00:19:16Baseball has gotten stronger because we listened to the fans and made necessary changes on the
00:19:22field, like the pitch clock, to quicken the game, and ABS Challenge to get the most important calls right.
00:19:29The biggest issue we need to solve next to continue to grow the game off the field
00:19:33is fixing the payroll disparity unseen in any other major U.S. sport.
00:19:41Ultimately, the game is about hope and competition, and too many fans in too many markets have too
00:19:47little hope their team has a fair chance to win.
00:19:50Fans overwhelmingly support a salary cap and floor like in the other leagues because they
00:19:56don't believe a $446 million spending gap from top to bottom is a fair fight.
00:20:03Our salary cap and floor proposal levels the playing field while sharing baseball revenue
00:20:09with the players 50-50 as we grow the game together.
00:20:13Further, by sharing media revenue equally as part of our proposal, we can address another
00:20:19top fan concern of local TV blackouts.
00:20:23We look forward to working with the MLBPA during the bargaining process to continue improving
00:20:28the game for the fans.
00:20:31Bruce Meyer, the interim executive director of the MLB Players Association, released the
00:20:36following statement yesterday after receiving MLB's proposal.
00:20:41Yesterday, meaning Wednesday, the MLBPA presented a comprehensive package of proposals designed to improve
00:20:50compensation for players at all levels and to incentivize and reward competition on the field.
00:20:56The owners responded today, Thursday, with a demand for a salary cap system, something generations
00:21:02of players have fought against.
00:21:04The last time the owners made such an explicit push for a cap over 30 years ago, it led to
00:21:11the longest work stoppage in MLB history.
00:21:14For a generation, our members have fought against cap system because they harm players at all levels,
00:21:21erode or eliminate contractual guarantees, hit player against player, lead to more work stoppages,
00:21:28not less, and get worse for players over time.
00:21:31Caps don't lower ticket prices for fans, eliminate tanking, or ensure teams are run with equal
00:21:40confidence.
00:21:40They suffocate competition by offering owners an all-purpose excuse for inaction and mediocrity.
00:21:48Baseball is experiencing unprecedented momentum and owners are enjoying record viewership,
00:21:53revenues, and franchise values.
00:21:55Billionaire owners are not seeking to cap their profits or asset values, only player salaries.
00:22:03This isn't out of generosity or a desire to protect the game's well-being.
00:22:08It's a play to control costs, increase profits, and maximize franchise values, all at the expense
00:22:15of players past, present, and future.
00:22:18We'll continue our review of the owner's proposal and stand ready to negotiate system improvements
00:22:24that benefit players and fans alike.
00:22:27Unquote.
00:22:29We now bring in senior national reporter for MLB.com and MLB Network insider Mark Feinstein.
00:22:35Mark, what else can you tell us about some of these key highlights from the league's proposal?
00:22:41Hey, Robert.
00:22:42So, obviously, the biggest part of the proposal for both sides is the salary cap and salary
00:22:48floor.
00:22:49The details of the initial proposal, the salary cap would be set at $245.3 million in 2027.
00:22:57The floor would be set at $171.2 million.
00:23:01What that would mean?
00:23:0212 teams would have to increase their payroll by a combined $617 million.
00:23:08Eight clubs would have to reduce their payroll by a combined $578 million, so a little bit
00:23:13more in terms of the increase than the decrease, but obviously, there's a fair amount of money
00:23:19on both sides of that.
00:23:20The current CBT threshold this year is $244 million, which is a little bit lower than the
00:23:26cap number.
00:23:26The second part is the 50-50 split of revenue, which would basically cut the pie in half in
00:23:33terms of baseball revenue between the players and the clubs.
00:23:37That would be shared equally as the revenue grows throughout the course of the agreement.
00:23:41Also interesting, the league's proposal is for a seven-year deal.
00:23:45We've seen five-year deals.
00:23:47For many, many CBAs in the past, the league is proposing a seven-year deal.
00:23:53And so, the 50-50 split of revenue leads us to number three, the centralized media revenue.
00:23:59Right now, teams keep their local media revenue, and there is a big disparity between some of
00:24:04the bigger markets, such as New York, LA, Chicago, and some of the smaller markets.
00:24:08This would basically take all of the media revenue, put it into one pot, split it up 30
00:24:14ways, and that would theoretically give some of the smaller market teams more money to spend
00:24:20to get those payrolls up to that salary floor of 171.2.
00:24:25All right, Mark, we appreciate the details.
00:24:27That's Mark Feinsand with the latest on the CBA negotiations between the league and the MLBPA.
00:24:33We appreciate the time, Mark.
00:24:34Thanks.
00:24:35Thank you.
00:24:36All right, let's take a quick break.
00:24:38When we come back, Pat Murphy, Milwaukee Brewers manager, joins the show.
00:24:42Going to talk about what's been going right for the Milwaukee Brewers, what's the ceiling
00:24:46for this team, and a whole lot more.
00:24:48You're watching MLB Central on a Friday.
00:24:51Stay with us.
00:25:04Let's turn on Ballpark Ham in America's most beautiful city.
00:25:07That would be?
00:25:08It's Houston, Texas.
00:25:09It's Houston, Texas.
00:25:10I'm glad that you answered it.
00:25:12Astros hosting a team that has a four-game lead in the National League Central.
00:25:16Brewers, 13 games over 500, and they're spending a weekend in Roberts City with the roaches that
00:25:23fly.
00:25:23You know what I'm talking about?
00:25:24Well, that's really only in July and August.
00:25:27And they're at arguably, and we won't say the name.
00:25:30It rhymes with?
00:25:32No, arguably the nicest road hotel on the show circuit.
00:25:38That's how Pat Murphy rolls.
00:25:40Our manager interviews are presented by Sage, and we're thrilled to hang with the Brewers manager,
00:25:44Pat Murphy.
00:25:45Good morning.
00:25:45Good morning, Pat.
00:25:46How are you?
00:25:47Good morning.
00:25:48Good morning.
00:25:49I'm fine.
00:25:49Thank you.
00:25:50I got a very nice jersey, courtesy of the Brewers, with a note I so appreciate it.
00:25:56Thank you.
00:25:57Hey, 37 jerseys we've seen you wear.
00:26:00Never wear the Brewers, so we're fine.
00:26:02Thank you.
00:26:02We're 38th.
00:26:03Hey, Pat, I couldn't help but notice there was only one jersey in that box.
00:26:10Surely that must have been an oversight or some sort of mistake.
00:26:14No.
00:26:14A shipping.
00:26:14Small market.
00:26:15Small market.
00:26:16We're not falling for that anymore.
00:26:18I watch every game, every night.
00:26:20And?
00:26:20You guys are legit.
00:26:21You went in a lot of different ways.
00:26:23It's fun to watch.
00:26:25This start, you have to feel good about where you guys are at right now.
00:26:29Well, you know, with the injuries that occurred early and to be where we are right now is a step
00:26:36in the right direction.
00:26:37You know.
00:26:38I mean, there's a lot of baseball left.
00:26:40And, yeah, we're just trying to get better.
00:26:44You know, Pat, it's funny.
00:26:47You don't get too wowed too much, right?
00:26:50Like, you see these great players come into the league and you see warts on everybody.
00:26:53But I'm telling you, I'm watching Jacob Mizorowski pitch the other day.
00:26:59And I think I texted you.
00:27:01I'm like, he might be a guy where they might have to think about moving the mound back.
00:27:07He's throwing four seam heaters and you're seeing great big league hitters not be on time to hit this stuff.
00:27:16Yeah, I'm telling you, I think back to it and at bat with Vladdy, I think we were home against
00:27:24Toronto.
00:27:25And I saw his reaction after the first pitch.
00:27:28He kind of looked at William, kind of looked towards the dugout like, what am I going to do with
00:27:33that?
00:27:36Pretty special.
00:27:37Sure enough, we threw him a breaking ball and he hit a base hit up the middle.
00:27:42I'm shaking my head like, wow.
00:27:44Pat, your organization excels at a lot of things.
00:27:48But also the ability to find or give second chances to players that, for whatever reason, it hasn't worked out
00:27:57at other organizations.
00:27:58I'm thinking about Andrew Vaughn.
00:28:00I'm thinking about Jake Bowers.
00:28:01What is it about your organization that allows players like that and others to come in and almost get a
00:28:08fresh start, turn the page and have success?
00:28:11Well, think about it.
00:28:12You know, so many so many people don't get that clean entry into the big leagues and they're part time
00:28:19players, that type of thing.
00:28:20And then all of a sudden they do get that chance and, you know, a great version of themselves comes
00:28:26out.
00:28:26And I think, you know, that's part of how we do business, some of it out of necessity.
00:28:32And, you know, I don't think it's that surprising that these players, they're good enough to get to the big
00:28:37leagues.
00:28:38And they bob and weave and figure out how to navigate to stay alive.
00:28:43And then finally they get an opportunity.
00:28:45I think of Bowers.
00:28:46I think of Vaughn.
00:28:47And, you know, we're the recipient of that and we're very, very lucky.
00:28:52Pat, every manager goes about things differently.
00:28:54I've been in your clubhouse.
00:28:55You're big on respect and honesty, but you're the final say.
00:28:58I'm curious how you feel you can get the most out of your guys while remaining the authority.
00:29:07Yeah, I mean, again, I'm just grateful to be in this position.
00:29:11And I take the leadership part as, you know, it's a real privilege to be in this spot.
00:29:17I don't want to lead through power or through idle.
00:29:22You know, I just want to be genuine.
00:29:24And I really want the players to run the thing.
00:29:28You know what I mean?
00:29:29Yeah, I'm the final say, but I want the players to be heard.
00:29:33And I want them to, you know, grow and take chances and risk and, you know, go for it all.
00:29:41Hey, Pat, I was fortunate to have Bryce Terang.
00:29:44I walked away from that Team USA experience saying there's so much more in the tank for this guy.
00:29:50There's, like, potential 25 bombs, 30 stolen bases, and he's doing his thing early.
00:29:56But you had two guys that were down, Andrew Vaughn being one of them.
00:29:59But the other guy is Jackson Churio.
00:30:01Can you take us inside a little bit?
00:30:03I mean, you put him right back in the lineup.
00:30:06He was leading off.
00:30:07It's four knocks.
00:30:08It's a slow heartbeat.
00:30:10Like, this dude's a pretty special player.
00:30:13Yeah, Jack-Jack, he is special.
00:30:16You know, when you have a young man that has that type of attitude to begin with, a smile on
00:30:20his face forever.
00:30:22And good.
00:30:23You never know if he's going good or going bad.
00:30:24He's the same.
00:30:26And to see the way those hands work.
00:30:29Yeah.
00:30:30To see the way he takes on challenges.
00:30:33Yeah.
00:30:34And, again, the person he is every day, the way the teammate he is, it's different.
00:30:39It's really different.
00:30:40Oh, sorry.
00:30:41I'm sorry to cut you off.
00:30:42Pat, I was going to say, Robert, says two things about the city.
00:30:45Don't get used to that.
00:30:47By me?
00:30:50I'm so sorry.
00:30:51I just like to give you a hard time.
00:30:53Oh, man.
00:30:54Robert says two things about the city that you're in.
00:30:57Number one, that the pizza is the best on the planet.
00:30:59And number two, that it's America's most beautiful city.
00:31:02Can you confirm or deny?
00:31:03Talking about Houston, of course.
00:31:05Talking about Houston.
00:31:07I haven't left the hotel, okay?
00:31:09Prepared to be wild, Pat.
00:31:13This hotel is beautiful.
00:31:16You know, they've treated us unbelievably.
00:31:18We had a little staff outing yesterday.
00:31:22It was actually like one foot out of the hotel.
00:31:25And that's all I've done.
00:31:28But I hear great things.
00:31:29So I'm just going to agree with whatever you guys say.
00:31:32What's your routine on the road?
00:31:34Are you a workout in the morning?
00:31:36Are you a base tan at the pool kind of guy?
00:31:38Are you?
00:31:40Take me through your morning routine.
00:31:43I get up.
00:31:44I write in the morning.
00:31:47Just kind of help myself, whatever, journal, whatever you want to call it.
00:31:51Doodle, whatever.
00:31:53I get up and do that.
00:31:54Talk to my kids on the phone, first and foremost.
00:31:58FaceTime them.
00:32:00Talk to my older son.
00:32:01Call my daughter.
00:32:04And then go to breakfast.
00:32:08Yeah, I might get a workout in.
00:32:11And then I'm at the yard at 11.
00:32:13You're at the yard early.
00:32:1511.30.
00:32:16I like being there early, especially on the road.
00:32:18Might I suggest picking up the guitar, Pat?
00:32:22Pat, he's having a midlife crisis.
00:32:25I started taking guitar lessons.
00:32:27Be on the lookout of that three-finger G chord, however.
00:32:30It's a doozy.
00:32:31It's tricky.
00:32:31Be careful.
00:32:32That's beautiful.
00:32:33That's beautiful.
00:32:34I look forward to hearing that.
00:32:35See you.
00:32:36Hey, Pat.
00:32:37Pat, thank you very much for joining us.
00:32:39Congratulations on the success so far this year.
00:32:43And good luck this weekend in Houston and moving forward.
00:32:46Thank you very much.
00:32:48That is Pat Murphy, Brewers manager, joining us here on MLB Central.
00:32:52Speaking of the Brewers, keys to the game presented by Meineke.
00:32:55And let's talk about this weekend set against the Astros,
00:32:58who just completed a 10-game road trip.
00:33:00They won 7 of 10 during it.
00:33:02They swept the Cubs.
00:33:03They took 3 of 4 from the Rangers just this week.
00:33:05But Brewers have also won 7 of 10.
00:33:09They do have to deal with Jacob Mizorowski over the weekend.
00:33:12That's going to be dice easy.
00:33:14You all right?
00:33:15You got it?
00:33:15Yeah, you got it.
00:33:16Jake Bowers, 377 average in his last 15 games.
00:33:21And the Astros' offense is starting to get going as well.
00:33:24All right.
00:33:26Time for another break when we come back.
00:33:28All these players changed teams in the offseason.
00:33:30Now that some time has passed, Joel Sherman takes a closer look at these deals
00:33:37and other big transactions in the offseason just to see how things are shaking out.
00:33:42A look back is next.
00:33:50Keys to the game.
00:33:52Hey, welcome back to the Friday MLB Central.
00:33:55We are presented by Blue Buffalo.
00:33:57We are always talking free agency.
00:33:59But my gosh, have trades changed the complexion of so many teams?
00:34:03And nobody better to put it into perspective than Joel Sherman.
00:34:05Good Friday morning to you.
00:34:07You made a list of the top five offseason trades.
00:34:09And it's so difficult, Joel.
00:34:11We always have conversations about assessing trades in real time.
00:34:14That's difficult to do.
00:34:15But now when we've had time, a few trades have really changed the identity of so many teams.
00:34:20Give us a few.
00:34:21Yeah.
00:34:22So I'm going to start with one that's the untraditional kind of trade in the offseason,
00:34:27which is my veteran for your veteran.
00:34:29Usually you're getting prospects back.
00:34:31But the Mets wanted to get better, they thought, defensively
00:34:36and wanted short years in Marcus Simeon.
00:34:38They were concerned about the five years of Brandon Nimmo.
00:34:41But I've got to say this, a third of the way into the season, this one isn't close.
00:34:46Nimmo literally has twice the OPS plus of Simeon.
00:34:50Simeon's 64 and Nimmo's 127.
00:34:53He leads the Rangers in war.
00:34:56The Rangers are having all kinds of offensive problems.
00:34:59And if they didn't have this guy, I don't know where they've been.
00:35:02And by the way, while Simeon's defense has come way down,
00:35:05Nimmo is third among right fielders, a new position in DRS.
00:35:09So actually, he probably would have helped the Mets with the other one.
00:35:12On the more traditional side, St. Louis made three trades in seemingly a rebuild.
00:35:18It's interesting.
00:35:19They're 29 and 25, but they trade three guys, Arenado, Wilson, Contreras, and Sonny Gray.
00:35:24Arenado, they eat almost all of the money, 31 of the 42 million to go to Arizona.
00:35:32And, you know, Arenado looked at age 35 like maybe he was right near the end.
00:35:36But in the middle of April, starting April 15th, 311 average, seven homers, 972 OPS.
00:35:42He had a groin issue a couple of days ago, and he didn't play the last game.
00:35:46I'm curious what comes back.
00:35:47And the Red Sox, like, among the few good things for the Red Sox this year is
00:35:52Wilson Contreras has been their best hitter pretty much by far this season.
00:35:57And as far as pitchers go, Sonny Gray is 5-1 for a team that's 23-32.
00:36:05And so I have a feeling that Wilson Contreras and Sonny Gray, if things don't change drastically
00:36:09in this third of a season for Boston, might get traded again before the deadline.
00:36:13So interesting.
00:36:14Something to watch for.
00:36:15And your line, my veteran for your veteran in that first trade, I never thought of it like that.
00:36:21But it's so often not the case.
00:36:22So it's interesting to see that and which side won.
00:36:25I feel like narratives are created, and they stick.
00:36:29For example, in the Bronx, we live in New York City.
00:36:31It was they didn't do enough in the offseason.
00:36:34I remember asking Aaron Boone in spring training.
00:36:37He said, look, there are worse things than continuing with a 94-win team.
00:36:40They did.
00:36:41That narrative's not entirely true.
00:36:42Yeah, they were the Stan Pat Yankees, except for, I don't remember, Garrett Cole pitching
00:36:48for them last year, who has thrown 12 and two-third innings.
00:36:51And they traded for Ryan Weathers, who has been really good for them so far this year.
00:36:58The one thing to keep in mind is Weathers has never thrown big innings in the major leagues,
00:37:03never over 100.
00:37:04He did it minor leagues, majors combined.
00:37:06But since he's become a major leaguer, that is not terrible news for the Yankees.
00:37:11First of all, he's holding his stuff so far and seems to be getting better as the season
00:37:15goes along.
00:37:16But the Yankees' clear problem this season is their bullpen.
00:37:20And I keep thinking the overflow of their rotation is ultimately going to solve that.
00:37:27That with Cole and Rodon back, I think they'll get Max Fried back about midseason.
00:37:32Cam Schlittler is right now probably the frontrunner for A.L. Cy Young.
00:37:36Between Will Warren, Ryan Weathers, Carlos Legrande in the minor leagues, I think two of those
00:37:42guys are going to end up being bullpen guys.
00:37:44And I think Weathers' lefty power is going to be one of them.
00:37:46That's so interesting.
00:37:47So in a five-game series, it's Cole, Rodon, Fried, and Cam.
00:37:49And then we work on the later inning.
00:37:52Like, I think then it becomes legion ball.
00:37:53We're going to take our 13 best pitchers.
00:37:56I'd throw him at you.
00:37:57And these are the 13 best arms to try to win a World Series.
00:38:01And I think Weathers will be part of it in some form as long as he continues in this
00:38:05path and stays healthy.
00:38:06A great collection of talent there in the Bronx.
00:38:08We looked at the National League Central yesterday, and we just spoke with Pat Murphy.
00:38:12It's a fascinating division made even more interesting by really good deals.
00:38:17Yeah.
00:38:17So last year, the Pirates finished last in homers and last in runs per game.
00:38:22They're middle of the pack in homers this year, which doesn't sound like much except
00:38:25for if you will last last year, and they're sixth in runs per game.
00:38:28Their best offensive player, again, pretty much by far has been Brandon Lau.
00:38:33And that's a trade.
00:38:34It was a three-way trade.
00:38:35And by the way, Mason Montgomery has helped them out of the bullpen.
00:38:39Jay Mangum is a pretty good fourth outfielder.
00:38:42To date, they've really won this trade.
00:38:46Lau would be on a 10-person MVP ballot.
00:38:49But he'd be one of the people who would get at least some down-ballot appreciation.
00:38:55He's in the top 10 in the National League in homers, RDIs, OPS.
00:38:59He's been really good.
00:39:01But, you know, you had Pat Murphy on, and I just think there's a clear champion for the
00:39:05off-season trade this off-season.
00:39:08Because turning Caleb Durbin into other pieces, if you had just done it for Kyle Harrison,
00:39:14who's been a top-five starter in the National League in a great year for National League
00:39:18starting pitching this year, that would be really something.
00:39:21And, I mean, when you look at Harrison...
00:39:23Joel, this is crazy to look back on.
00:39:25Right?
00:39:25We had Kyle Harrison on the show this week.
00:39:2818 consecutive shutout innings over his last three starts, by the way.
00:39:32You start imagining it's a far road from here to there.
00:39:35But, you know, they haven't had something that looks like Mizorowski and Harrison able
00:39:38to start postseason games for them in a few years.
00:39:42You feel like can match up with anyone, regardless of, like, payrolls, market size, etc.
00:39:48And, Rohan is a really good lefty reliever power guy who's giving them innings.
00:39:55And, by the way, David Hamilton is a Pat Murphy player, a lot like Caleb Durbin.
00:40:00There's not a lot of batting average there, but he can steal your base.
00:40:03He can play a bunch of positions really well.
00:40:06If you did Caleb Durbin for David Hamilton, it'd be kind of an even trade.
00:40:10They got two difference-making pitchers, especially Harris.
00:40:14We were just talking to Pat Murphy and DeRomever.
00:40:15And that's how they keep staying so good.
00:40:17They make great moves, the Milwaukee people.
00:40:19And he said it.
00:40:20He said, I believe they have all the pieces.
00:40:22And he believed it.
00:40:23Joel Sherman on the inside corner.
00:40:25Thank you so much.
00:40:26We appreciate it.
00:40:26Hey, this week on the MLB Network podcast, presented by Amazon, Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson.
00:40:32How cool.
00:40:32Saturday, 1.30 p.m. Eastern Time.
00:40:34It's right here on MLB Network and wherever you get your podcasts.
00:40:38All you have to do, it's easy.
00:40:39Just scan that QR code on your screen to subscribe.
00:40:43Here's Reggie recalling his famous 1971 All-Star Game home run.
00:40:48Another one I'm sure you get asked about a lot is the ball that still hasn't come down in the
00:40:5271 All-Star Game in Detroit.
00:40:55And I think there were crews looking for it when they tore down old Tiger Stadium.
00:40:59I mean, Reggie, I don't know that we're ever going to see anything this superhuman.
00:41:04Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge.
00:41:06This is just spectacular.
00:41:07I could watch it all day.
00:41:09Has your view of this changed over the years?
00:41:13Or do you still feel the same when you watch it now as you did back then?
00:41:19I don't know if I feel the same as I watched it back then.
00:41:24But I do remember the night.
00:41:28And honestly, the wind was blowing out.
00:41:31Went up the home plate.
00:41:33And before I can blink an eye, it's one ball and two strikes.
00:41:37And I choked up just a little bit and wanted to protect the plate.
00:41:45And this guy hangs a slider and boom.
00:41:50Can't wait for that tomorrow.
00:41:52Hey, we all know Denver's a great place to watch a ball game.
00:41:55Now there's a new menu item at Coors Field.
00:41:57Coming up, we're sampling the Rockies version of a fast food staple.
00:42:02And guess who's also going to be joining the program?
00:42:05Who is it?
00:42:05He's one of the greatest right-handed hitters in the history of the game.
00:42:08We were just looking at his baseball reference page.
00:42:10It's absolutely.
00:42:11It's bonkers.
00:42:13It's bonkers.
00:42:14The real number five.
00:42:17No, no, no.
00:42:18Fugazi Lawrence Shahadi number five.
00:42:19Who's the fake five?
00:42:21Me.
00:42:24The Fugazi five.
00:42:32Take out me to the ball game.
00:42:33And we just happened to see a legend while we're there.
00:42:36Number five.
00:42:38Good morning.
00:42:39Good morning.
00:42:39Good to see you guys.
00:42:40Real quick.
00:42:40Tell people how you got the number five.
00:42:43Walt Yolkity.
00:42:44The same as Cardinals.
00:42:45Yeah, of course.
00:42:46When you're 402 in the draft, you don't pick your numbers.
00:42:49You know, you just, whatever they gave me.
00:42:50Oh, it was 68.
00:42:51You were 68.
00:42:52My man, Walt saw him in the cage.
00:42:54He's like, get this kid number five, please.
00:42:57Yes.
00:42:57Do you remember when someone told you to move back?
00:42:59Jose Okendo.
00:43:00You're like, really?
00:43:01Disney.
00:43:02Spring training.
00:43:03Probably the eighth inning.
00:43:04That's when the Scribini's are in there, all right?
00:43:07And this guy walks to the plate, and Jose Okendo goes, D-Row, back up.
00:43:12I'm like, come on.
00:43:12He might toke.
00:43:14Yeah.
00:43:14I don't know if he's going to buy.
00:43:15I don't know him.
00:43:16And he proceeded to hit a ball over the clock at Disney World, and then went on to win
00:43:20Rookie of the Year, MVP, and then did amazing.
00:43:23And now we're serving him lunch on MLB Central.
00:43:25This might be my favorite meal since we started this segment.
00:43:28Taking me to the ballgame, Rocky style.
00:43:30Dig in, gentlemen.
00:43:31My two favorite foods, pizza and donuts combined.
00:43:35Is it a donut?
00:43:35A plain donut, yes, sir.
00:43:37Garlic butter, grated Parmesan, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni marinara, topped with pesto
00:43:42sauce.
00:43:42It's pretty good.
00:43:43And Italian seasoning.
00:43:44Yes, please.
00:43:45You can get it at Coors Field in Section 109.
00:43:49Robert, tell me.
00:43:49You're digging it.
00:43:50I really like it.
00:43:51Yeah.
00:43:52It's an explosion of flavor in my mouth.
00:43:54Is that so?
00:43:55Mm-hmm.
00:43:55What's your normal pizza order?
00:43:56It's like a gigantic, awesome pizza bagel.
00:43:59That's right.
00:44:00Is there anything better?
00:44:02What's there?
00:44:03Don't overthink it.
00:44:04Pizza bagels and pigs in a blanket.
00:44:06Don't pop that in the microwave.
00:44:08Watch some game shows or something like that.
00:44:10What's your normal pizza order, Albert?
00:44:12Albert, I don't know.
00:44:12You've got to take a bite.
00:44:13I would love to.
00:44:15Albert.
00:44:16He doesn't have to.
00:44:17He doesn't have to.
00:44:17He can't disrespect the Colorado run.
00:44:19He's intermittent fasting.
00:44:20He's intermittent fasting.
00:44:21He had 13 home runs in that year.
00:44:22He'd do whatever he wants.
00:44:23I was going to say how many times did he go deep?
00:44:25In that ballpark.
00:44:26They're taking it.
00:44:27I asked it, that was my first question.
00:44:29Instead of sweet pastry, by the way, this consists of a soft, plain donut topped
00:44:34with garlic butter, marinara, and mozzarella cheese.
00:44:36What's your normal pizza order?
00:44:38Oh, just like cheese pizza.
00:44:40Just cheese.
00:44:40Yes, cheese.
00:44:41Sometimes I get it like a Hawaiian.
00:44:42I like Hawaiian pizza.
00:44:44With ham and pineapple?
00:44:45Pineapple?
00:44:46Yeah.
00:44:47There was a little pizza oven guy outside my apartment complex last night.
00:44:52I was not planning on pizza, and I was walking at it.
00:44:54And next thing I know, I'm crushing a margarita.
00:44:57Like a food truck?
00:44:58Yeah.
00:44:59Just hanging out?
00:45:00They bring them up.
00:45:01Different food trucks, and people come out, and they mingle.
00:45:04Hey, I've never been to a game at Coors.
00:45:09I've walked by it.
00:45:10It looks like a fantastic place to watch a game.
00:45:13Have you guys ever put honey in the pizza?
00:45:15Honey?
00:45:16Yes.
00:45:16Excuse me, sir?
00:45:17Yes.
00:45:18Like hot honey?
00:45:19My wife put like hot honey.
00:45:20Yeah, and my daughter.
00:45:21Yeah, I'm like, try this.
00:45:23I'm like, okay.
00:45:24I tried it.
00:45:24It was really good.
00:45:25All right, we'll try that.
00:45:26If Albert says put honey in the pizza.
00:45:27If Albert says it's good, then we're trying it.
00:45:29You're listening to me right now.
00:45:31All right.
00:45:32Thanks to the Colorado Rockies.
00:45:33Thank you very much to the Rockies.
00:45:35Thank you very much to our staff who kind of helped put this all together.
00:45:39Dave Zee and the great people in the back.
00:45:41It looks amazing.
00:45:41How do you feel about the knife and fork he's using?
00:45:44Well, I mean, come on.
00:45:44We knew that one.
00:45:45Did you not know what you were doing?
00:45:47On TV.
00:45:47I can't be, you know.
00:45:48You got the suede, Terry Claw.
00:45:50It's also very good.
00:45:51Terry Claw?
00:45:52What did you just say?
00:45:55Oh, Terry.
00:45:56You bite your tongue.
00:45:58Terry Claw.
00:46:00I'm not a damn towel, for God's sake.
00:46:03I'm not a cake man.
00:46:04Who didn't love a good Terry Claw?
00:46:05All right.
00:46:06It's time to check out the Capital One walk-offs from this week.
00:46:09Terry Claw.
00:46:14The Angels walk it off on a Sunday night pinball machine.
00:46:20Aaron Judge action with a two-run walk-off homer.
00:46:25Everybody's on their feet.
00:46:26Why not?
00:46:27It's a walk-off.
00:46:28Did the Bronx?
00:46:29The Marlins walk off the bench with a break.
00:46:33Slam.
00:46:34It's the Marlins, who are the kings of queens.
00:46:40He carries his back.
00:46:41He's out of room.
00:46:42All game.
00:46:43The middle man in the house.
00:46:45First walk-off of his career.
00:46:47You've seen that more Austin, huh?
00:46:49Back-to-back days.
00:46:51What the home runs for Couser.
00:46:54It's the milk home.
00:46:58Capital One is donating $1,000 to the Jackie Robinson Foundation for every walk-off this season.
00:47:06Okay.
00:47:07We know he's one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
00:47:10There is no doubt about that.
00:47:11But how well does Albert Pujols know his own career?
00:47:16We're taking an AP exam with the future Hall of Famer next.
00:47:52I love history.
00:47:52The baseball team just got significantly better.
00:47:55I mean, it's the bucket list item.
00:47:58Sit at the desk.
00:47:59You're the teacher.
00:48:00Pool holes is next.
00:48:01He's cheating off his paper.
00:48:02I think I had this dream, actually.
00:48:05I have.
00:48:06What?
00:48:06I might have.
00:48:07You have whiteboards in front of you.
00:48:09I will ask you questions about Albert's career.
00:48:11You will write them and then hold them up.
00:48:13So, Lucas, hold them steady for all to see.
00:48:16Albert, how well do you know your career?
00:48:18You feel pretty confident going in?
00:48:20A little bit.
00:48:20Okay.
00:48:21D-Rome, Robert, you in AP history?
00:48:23Yes or no?
00:48:23Yes.
00:48:24That's your first question.
00:48:25Albert has hit home runs off 458 career pitchers, none more than this pitcher who gave
00:48:32up eight long balls to him in his career.
00:48:36D-Rome's answer is C, our co-worker.
00:48:39I witnessed a bunch of them flying on the wavelength.
00:48:42Yes, sir.
00:48:43The answer is Brian Dempster.
00:48:45Yep, I've got it.
00:48:46Are you going to give us the choices?
00:48:48Because I was told it's multiple choice, no?
00:48:50Oh, yeah.
00:48:51I thought they were the choice.
00:48:51You know what's crazy, Albert?
00:48:53You're at the short table of the greatest hitters of all time.
00:48:56But you know what's crazy is Dempsey had good stuff.
00:49:00Dempsey was a hell of a pitcher.
00:49:02And you treated him like a BP pitcher.
00:49:04Actually, you know, when he was coming out as a reliever, he was tough.
00:49:08He had nasty sliders, split.
00:49:10But my success became after he became a starter, you know, because I got to facing three or
00:49:15four, you know, our bats.
00:49:17So, hey, there you go.
00:49:18I hope that makes you feel better.
00:49:20Sunday day game and just watching from second base.
00:49:23Oh, my God.
00:49:24Four of the eight home runs for Dempster came in 2010 for Albert.
00:49:29He had more than 13,000 plate appearances.
00:49:32Only struck out 1,404 times.
00:49:35Who struck him out the most?
00:49:38Here are your choices.
00:49:40Okay, this is tough.
00:49:41Well, I'm going to say this person struck him out a total of 16 times in 73 career at-bats.
00:49:48He had a 219 average against him.
00:49:51Both of you say Ben Sheets.
00:49:52That would be wrong.
00:49:53Albert's got it right.
00:49:54It was King Felix.
00:49:55So, he did get him for Homer, by the way.
00:49:58Yeah.
00:49:58I didn't think you faced him enough.
00:50:00Yes.
00:50:00But it's late in your career.
00:50:02Yeah.
00:50:02What was it about King Felix?
00:50:04He was nasty.
00:50:05He pitched me different every week.
00:50:07Really?
00:50:07It was crazy.
00:50:08You got him in your first head-to-head matchup against one another.
00:50:11It was May 26, 2012.
00:50:15Yeah, and after that, I was like, yeah.
00:50:17Yeah, I got this.
00:50:18And the rest was history.
00:50:19That wasn't good.
00:50:20AP history.
00:50:22Pujols was thrown out on his very first stolen base attempt.
00:50:26Ooh.
00:50:27Who was the catcher?
00:50:29The choices on your screen.
00:50:30Tried to steal for the first time as a big leaguer.
00:50:32It was April 2, 2001.
00:50:35It was against Houston.
00:50:36During his 15-year MLB career, this guy threw out a total of 269 runners at a 29.2%
00:50:46rate.
00:50:47Yes, Brent.
00:50:48It's just a total guess.
00:50:49That's a total guess, and it was correct.
00:50:51You didn't know, Alvaro?
00:50:52Brent Mayne's correct?
00:50:53Yes, Brent Mayne's correct.
00:50:55Number?
00:50:56All right.
00:50:58N.P. trick.
00:50:59Man.
00:51:00What?
00:51:01Paul was like coming up through the minors.
00:51:03He was like some massive catching prospect.
00:51:06Okay, up next.
00:51:07Albert was hit 123 times during his career.
00:51:10What pitcher hit him the most?
00:51:13I would feel like you would know this, but looking at your face, you're not sure.
00:51:18This pitcher hit him on three different occasions, once each in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
00:51:27I'm just going to say, I'm going to go with B, because they were in the same division.
00:51:31Yes, sir.
00:51:31That would be wrong.
00:51:32No, Kerry did not hit him much.
00:51:34I would say eight.
00:51:35Hey, Kip Wells.
00:51:36And for his career, you slugged 6.67.
00:51:41I'm not even answering.
00:51:43Just cheap.
00:51:44All right.
00:51:44Guys, I got A, Kip Wells.
00:51:47You heard of him?
00:51:49At what point, Albert, does it get annoying when a guy has plunked you more than once?
00:51:59I think, you know, when you get hit in the head after you hit home, or like you, Darvish, did
00:52:03in Anaheim.
00:52:05Yeah.
00:52:05That feels like, man, was that on purpose?
00:52:07Yeah, what are you doing?
00:52:08And like two weeks later, we're in Rangers Park, and I got hit in the head again, you know?
00:52:14And that really irritated me really bad.
00:52:16I don't blame you.
00:52:18And it was you that got you both times?
00:52:22Up next, Albert hit a career-high 49 home runs in 2006.
00:52:26What pitcher did he take deep the most that year?
00:52:30The choices on your screen.
00:52:32I'm going to say, it's not Ellerton.
00:52:35Not in the process of elimination in 2006.
00:52:42I'm actually going to go zero.
00:52:45I'm going to go to the t-shirt.
00:52:51Dang it.
00:52:51If you guys thought it's D, it's D, guys.
00:52:55We all know.
00:52:56D, guys.
00:52:57Guys.
00:52:57Had four hits and five at-bats, an 800 average against him in 2006.
00:53:03Oh, my goodness.
00:53:04All four of those hits, homers, by the way, shocking.
00:53:07Ian Snell.
00:53:07So shocking.
00:53:08A little foreseeing, occasional, a little two-seeing slider.
00:53:13Took 42 different pitchers deep in 2006.
00:53:17Next, Albert hit 19 career postseason home runs.
00:53:22Who was the first postseason home run off of?
00:53:26Come time.
00:53:27You know, he's got it.
00:53:28Don't say this.
00:53:28I don't want to say this.
00:53:30All right.
00:53:30Then don't look at his paper.
00:53:31And I don't want to write until you write.
00:53:33It was game two of the 2001 NLDS.
00:53:37All right.
00:53:38Okay.
00:53:39That narrowed down?
00:53:40No.
00:53:42So you can bring the names back up.
00:53:44Yeah, can we see the names again?
00:53:45I want to make sure.
00:53:46Levon Hernandez, Kurt Schilling, Jeff Weaver, Randy Johnson.
00:53:502001.
00:53:52Dang it.
00:53:53He was two for four in that game off of him.
00:53:56I'm going to change it to B.
00:53:57No, that would be wrong.
00:53:59Randy Johnson.
00:54:00Was it Randy?
00:54:00He got his own.
00:54:03We always talk about who he was up and away.
00:54:06Dero's first bigly got that.
00:54:08Oh, look at that.
00:54:10How much success did you have against Randy besides that at bat?
00:54:15I think I got him like five or six times.
00:54:19Five or six times?
00:54:21See how he doesn't move?
00:54:23See, yes, I could side angle talk.
00:54:25He got him like 340 or 4 or something.
00:54:28Good grief.
00:54:28We got Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards watching off the other side.
00:54:32Just hit like Albert Pujols, guys.
00:54:35You guys are good.
00:54:37They are hitting like that.
00:54:38That's right.
00:54:38Yeah, they are hitting like that, actually.
00:54:40He was 14 for 31 against Randy Johnson.
00:54:43How much?
00:54:44I was 452 average.
00:54:45I was one for 17.
00:54:48452?
00:54:48Yes.
00:54:49How many honers?
00:54:50Six home runs.
00:54:51Good Lord, Albert.
00:54:53Not bad.
00:54:54It's not bad.
00:54:55Not bad at all.
00:54:55He did have one career appearance on the mound.
00:54:57It was 2022.
00:54:59Oh, I remember this.
00:55:00This, I didn't like.
00:55:01First batter he recorded an out against.
00:55:05I don't even know who you pitched against.
00:55:07I wouldn't dare.
00:55:08This is a total guess.
00:55:10I'm just going to go.
00:55:11I'm going to go be Austin Slater.
00:55:13That's right.
00:55:16I don't know.
00:55:17I ate, and that's right.
00:55:18Wow.
00:55:19Okay.
00:55:20Guys, awesome.
00:55:20You faced seven batters in the ninth.
00:55:22What were you thinking, Albert?
00:55:22It was an out, but it was a bullet.
00:55:24I think that thing come off his bat.
00:55:26Did you run the pitch?
00:55:27Yeah.
00:55:28We were actually, Yaddy and I, we were talking in the dugout.
00:55:30I'm like, nope.
00:55:31I want to go.
00:55:32I want to do it.
00:55:34And Oli Marmo looked at me and was like, are you sure?
00:55:37I was like, yeah.
00:55:38Why not?
00:55:38Let's have some fun.
00:55:39You passed AP history with our new student, Albert Pujols, bucket list.
00:55:44He's already the most popular kid in school.
00:55:45I want to go high.
00:55:47He just moved into town.
00:55:49Game changer.
00:55:51That's it.
00:55:53Okay.
00:55:54Let's take a quick timeout.
00:55:55When we come back here on MLB Central, they're one of the best double play combos in the game,
00:56:01and they're in studio with us.
00:56:03We already showed you a brief little shot of them coming up.
00:56:07Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards of the Miami Marlins join us to talk Marlins baseball
00:56:13and a little bit later to test their artistic skills.
00:56:17Stay with us.
00:56:27MLB Central.
00:56:28Yeah.
00:56:29Welcome back.
00:56:31MLB Central is presented by Blue Buffalo.
00:56:36Welcome back to MLB Central.
00:56:38The Miami Marlins in town to take on the New York Mets,
00:56:40and we're pleased to be joined by one of the best double play combinations in the league,
00:56:44Xavier Edwards and Otto Lopez of the Miami Marlins.
00:56:47Gentlemen, thank you very much for being here.
00:56:49How are you?
00:56:50I'm pretty good.
00:56:53X, I know this is, I believe, your second or third time to come in studio.
00:56:57The Miami Marlins, we always talk about, they're a fun watch.
00:57:00How do you feel for both of you?
00:57:01How do you feel the season is going thus far?
00:57:04Xavier, you first.
00:57:05I would say it's going pretty well.
00:57:06I think, you know, we've still got our better baseball ahead of us,
00:57:08but we're off to a pretty decent start and looking to get hot here in New York.
00:57:12What about you, Otto?
00:57:13How do you feel things are going?
00:57:14I'm feeling great.
00:57:15There's a lot of up and downs, I would say, and this game is all about it.
00:57:20But, like, we're staying positive as much as possible and going with.
00:57:24All right.
00:57:24You guys talk shop.
00:57:26Not a lot of up and downs with Otto right now.
00:57:29Leading the game in hits.
00:57:30These guys get knocked.
00:57:31He's sleeping like a baby.
00:57:33So, you guys are in great hands with Albert and Dero.
00:57:36Talk hitting, and I'll talk to you guys a little bit later.
00:57:39All right.
00:57:39First off, love having you guys come in.
00:57:42Love trying to teach, you know, when you were young blood at home,
00:57:46if somebody, a big leaguer came out here, a guy like Albert Poole says,
00:57:49hey, I held my hands here.
00:57:50I was running out to the garage.
00:57:52Like, all right, let me pound some balls.
00:57:53So, that's all I want to do is go through your swings, give you some love,
00:57:57go side angle, and we'll just cook.
00:58:00Tell us what you do at the plate.
00:58:02Maybe help some kid out at home.
00:58:04But you talk about sleeping at night.
00:58:06Albert, check this out.
00:58:08Average leader's right here.
00:58:10Otto's leading the world.
00:58:11And you got marshed by a wide margin, too.
00:58:15Yeah.
00:58:16And, X-Man, you're hitting some bombs from both sides of the plate.
00:58:20Did you have a homer right-handed before you came into this year?
00:58:23No.
00:58:24Yeah, you got four this year.
00:58:25All right, show me F-War.
00:58:27Robert said they're one of the best double-play tandems.
00:58:32You guys are right now.
00:58:34I mean, the numbers support it.
00:58:35You look at it among second basemen.
00:58:38X-Man, you're at the top.
00:58:39And Otto, I mean, Bobby Witt, he.
00:58:42No, I mean, he's special.
00:58:44His war just keeps going.
00:58:46Why don't we do it?
00:58:46He's free, then his war goes up.
00:58:48All right, let's start with Otto first.
00:58:50And, Albert, you can jump in here.
00:58:52We're going to go right at the setup.
00:58:54Last year to this year is side-by-side.
00:58:57Pause this and leave this alone.
00:58:58This is 24 and 26.
00:59:01Some significant changes, you think?
00:59:03A little bit of changes.
00:59:04I would say last year, obviously, like, I was more open
00:59:08and more away from the plate.
00:59:11And this year, like, I'm feeling more of my leg.
00:59:14And, like, I'm trying to, like, go from the front leg to charge,
00:59:19like, all the load to my back head.
00:59:21Yeah.
00:59:21Just to rotate it from there.
00:59:23Was that something in the offseason?
00:59:25You said, I want to get lower and get into my legs?
00:59:28Oh, that was offseason and spring training, too.
00:59:31Both of them.
00:59:32And just get up with Pedro, our hitting coach,
00:59:36and he just showed me what I was doing last year.
00:59:39Like, we're trying to work on being more on my leg this year.
00:59:42And it has worked a lot, I would say.
00:59:45Go to the side angle of this because you're really a lot more crouched down.
00:59:52Yeah.
00:59:53And pause that.
00:59:54And for me, this is where the difference is, you know.
00:59:57Like he was saying, you know, something that he wants to get more on his leg.
01:00:00If you look at last year on the left side here compared to this year on the right side,
01:00:06and that's why he's driving the ball more because now he's on his leg.
01:00:09If we can get one more click a little bit forward, if you can, please.
01:00:14Just let it go.
01:00:15Keep going.
01:00:16Keep going.
01:00:17Keep going.
01:00:18You see that low right there?
01:00:19Stop right there.
01:00:20Pause.
01:00:20You see it right there?
01:00:21Yep.
01:00:22Look at that low.
01:00:22Which guy is going to hit the ball harder?
01:00:24That guy or that guy?
01:00:25He's on the leg.
01:00:27A little bit more angry, I would say.
01:00:29And then we're going to see later on, you know, a little bit why, you know, this year,
01:00:34that separation that we talk about, Dero, you can get on your leg,
01:00:37but sometimes we can get on front a little bit.
01:00:40But that separation that you have from your leg to your hands,
01:00:43that still allows you to that bat to travel longer.
01:00:47And we're going to see later on our bat that we have on sale where,
01:00:52because he kept his hands back, he was able to drive that slider back to the middle.
01:00:57Do you know this?
01:00:59I don't watch numbers.
01:01:00You don't discriminate.
01:01:02It don't matter what pitch it is.
01:01:03Fastball, you're hitting .353.
01:01:05Breakers, you're hitting .330.
01:01:07Off speed, .341.
01:01:08And I love it, too.
01:01:10There's no weakness.
01:01:12I love the separation, too.
01:01:13Look at where his hand is, too.
01:01:15Like, last year, it looks like his hand was almost by his face.
01:01:18Now he has it back.
01:01:20And from there, you're in a position that all you have to do is just blow it and fire.
01:01:25All right, let's get into it, Wolin.
01:01:27I know we've got a couple of his homers on different pitches.
01:01:29Here's Wheeler.
01:01:30I still, what did this end up being?
01:01:33That was a double.
01:01:34How is it a double?
01:01:36He touched his glove first and then hit the wall and hit his glove back.
01:01:41All right, you take Wheeler dead center, you're feeling good.
01:01:44But, like, this is the stuff.
01:01:45Run that back for me real quick.
01:01:46When you can take a good curveball and blister it into the opposite field gap,
01:01:52you know your swing's perfect.
01:01:54Yeah, on that pitch, I was just trying to stay through the ball.
01:02:01And, like, more like I say, like, on my front leg, when I'm, like, loading,
01:02:06it's going to feel like, I don't know if you remember, like, Judge Donaldson,
01:02:10when he was loading with his back leg with his hands.
01:02:14And it kind of was, like, that's what you're thinking.
01:02:17That's the separation that I want to create.
01:02:21Don't tell Josh Donaldson.
01:02:23All right.
01:02:24All right.
01:02:25Walk me through these A-Bs.
01:02:27Chris Sale, some of the, you know, some of the nastiest stuff in the game.
01:02:33Oh, he's got a, I've never seen a slider.
01:02:36That's nice.
01:02:36Yeah, I've never seen a slider that big.
01:02:39And all I, when I first tip it, and I told, like, I had a fire on the zone.
01:02:45Well, if it starts there, I'm just going to, like, let my swing go.
01:02:48I know my swing is, it's feeling good going to the middle.
01:02:51And I know, like, where his slider start, it's kind of like, I was telling jokes about it.
01:02:58It started in the other dugout.
01:03:01But if it starts in the other dugout, you're just going to get it.
01:03:03Yeah, like, I'm going to try to fight it up, like, in the middle.
01:03:06Can we go back to that last pitch, please, on sale?
01:03:10Because that's where I want to see if we can get it even from the side.
01:03:13Staying through.
01:03:14But that's the staying through, the separation.
01:03:16Keep going, please.
01:03:19Keep going.
01:03:21And then pass right there.
01:03:23You see that separation?
01:03:24Yeah.
01:03:25The leg and staying back.
01:03:26Because he, he, it looks like he got in front a little bit.
01:03:30Yeah, it was just a little.
01:03:31Because his hands are back.
01:03:32He was able to stay through and still drive that ball back to the middle.
01:03:37And that's what I'm talking about, that adjustment that he made this offseason.
01:03:41Which, that's why I allowed him to be over 340 this year.
01:03:45I love that.
01:03:46You're thinking that, like, almost that.
01:03:47He used to say there's, like, a string connected to my knee.
01:03:50And then, Godzman, you're getting a 2-2 count right here.
01:03:54I always, you know, the guys who win the batting titles are the guys who have base it to opposite
01:03:59field in their back pocket with two strikes.
01:04:01So, it's like, I see, you probably wanted to swing at that 2-0 pitch.
01:04:06But when you know you can do that with two strikes at any moment.
01:04:15All right, let's go.
01:04:17X-Man, let's see what we got.
01:04:18Because you're starting to pump some balls.
01:04:20You got toe taps.
01:04:21You got leg kicks.
01:04:22You got a lot happening.
01:04:24Yeah.
01:04:24You got stolen bases.
01:04:25So, let's get, let's get into it right away.
01:04:29Will Warren.
01:04:30Oops.
01:04:31Bomb.
01:04:32You're toe tapping, though.
01:04:33He's toe tapping.
01:04:34Oh, you're toe tapping from the left side.
01:04:36Left side.
01:04:37Not the right side.
01:04:37Kick from the right side.
01:04:39We got a whole bag of issues.
01:04:41It's almost, like, cheaper.
01:04:42Yes.
01:04:43Run that back, though.
01:04:44He's toe tapping like a dance move.
01:04:46This ain't, like, toe tapping place.
01:04:47He, like, puts it.
01:04:48He, like, put your right foot in.
01:04:51Watch this.
01:04:52Let's go towards the plate.
01:04:56On the line.
01:04:57Boom.
01:05:00Just the timing mechanism for you?
01:05:02Timing and for my back hip.
01:05:04I also try to think my back hip when I'm hitting.
01:05:06So, when I kind of tap across, I notice that it really, like, engages my back hip.
01:05:11So, you're doing that on purpose.
01:05:12Yeah, and try to turn.
01:05:14And that's really, that's the goal.
01:05:15Like, once you get into a good spot, it's really just how you turn from there.
01:05:18How efficiently can you turn?
01:05:19So, you tap in to feel what?
01:05:21I tap in to feel, I want to, so my back hip's in, like, a neutral position.
01:05:26Yeah.
01:05:27So, I'm here on my stance.
01:05:28And then when I tap, obviously, like, your hips turn.
01:05:32So, that's usually what you want.
01:05:33You want to load into your back hip.
01:05:34But for me, on the left-hand side, it's easier for me to do it that way and still time
01:05:37up the pitcher.
01:05:38So, I like to start slow and early.
01:05:40So, I have time to, like, get my foot across and kind of get my back hip into position.
01:05:45And then after that, it's, like, striding where the ball is.
01:05:48Love it.
01:05:49All right, run this.
01:05:52Wanted to give some love to the left-handed swing, but it's the right-handed swing that's starting to, like,
01:05:58a little flip.
01:06:00This is starting to get real from the right side now.
01:06:04Starting to get a little frisky, you know what I'm saying?
01:06:09Coming into the season, were you thinking, it's time to go from this side?
01:06:15Yeah, but for a different reason.
01:06:16Honestly, my last couple years right-handed were just not cutting it, in my opinion.
01:06:21And I think the stats back that up.
01:06:23So, over the offseason, I did a lot of searching just to figure out what I need to do.
01:06:26Did you ever think about scrapping it?
01:06:29Vaguely.
01:06:30I don't think seriously, but vaguely, I did.
01:06:32And, yeah, I was just kind of figuring out what would work for me right-handed.
01:06:36And a lot of work with our hitting staff here in the offseason.
01:06:38And I just realized, you know, my body works two different ways on both sides of the plate.
01:06:42And there's something my hitting coach said to me is that I need to treat both sides like two different
01:06:46people, two different hitters.
01:06:47So, that's kind of the mindset I've gone into with this year.
01:06:50Like, when I'm hitting lefty, you know, I know what kind of hitter I am.
01:06:52I know I can, you know, hit the ball at the yard.
01:06:53I can, you know, make you work with two strikes or foul balls off.
01:06:56But I know right-handed that I had more in the tank.
01:06:58And I just need to treat it completely different because, as a switch hitter, it's so easy to try to,
01:07:02like, mimic your left-handed swing or your right-handed swing.
01:07:04It's so funny.
01:07:04We just did Cattell Marte.
01:07:06He tries to mimic.
01:07:07Chipper did it.
01:07:08Yeah, it's so easy to try to mimic because I think that's naturally what you want to do.
01:07:11Yeah.
01:07:11Because you would rather have just one swing on two different sides than have two completely different swings.
01:07:16You know, but once you kind of get out of the way of that, you realize, okay, my body moves
01:07:20one way this way because, you know, I'm right-handed and moves a different way on the other side.
01:07:24And I think that's when it's starting to take off.
01:07:25All right, run this real quick and get me to the side-by-side because I just want them to
01:07:29make one point before we play Central Scribbles.
01:07:33Yes.
01:07:34Why did you ditch the toe tap and go to kind of – because you're doing basically the same thing.
01:07:39I just love people at home to understand.
01:07:43There's different ways to find rhythm and timing and guys tinker with it throughout the year.
01:07:47Absolutely.
01:07:48And it's just – yes, what feels good that day.
01:07:50What feels good.
01:07:51Run this.
01:07:52Exactly, it's a feel.
01:07:58I mean, here you're going with the basic toe tap.
01:08:00And there you're just not setting it down.
01:08:02It's almost – we had Trevor Story in here.
01:08:04He said, I wanted to tap, but it's almost like a hover.
01:08:06Right.
01:08:07Yeah, for me it's the same – similar kind of thought process on the left-hand side.
01:08:11Like slow and early is my thought.
01:08:12I think the earlier I can get better – or the earlier I get ready, the better.
01:08:16Just being ready for different, you know, pitch types, different speeds and all that stuff.
01:08:20And then it gives me time to get my move down.
01:08:23And once the move is down, it's like, okay, fire at this pitch.
01:08:26You know where you want it.
01:08:26You know, we watch a lot of video on the pitchers.
01:08:28We know what they like to throw and what they want to throw and where it needs to start for
01:08:31you to get a good swing off.
01:08:32So, it's like, okay, I see the ball in this zone and I'm going.
01:08:35And then it takes a lot of thinking out of it.
01:08:36Just get my move down and turn and go from there.
01:08:39You're driving in the yard some days.
01:08:41You, more times than not, are saying, this is a nice matchup for me.
01:08:46Do you drive to the yard sometimes and be like, I'm getting two stolen bases today?
01:08:53Honestly, it's more like series.
01:08:55You go into series.
01:08:56Series.
01:08:56Okay.
01:08:57These teams, the philosophy when it comes to, like, controlling the base running game
01:09:01or not controlling the base running game or maybe the catchers match up
01:09:04and maybe the catchers don't throw that well.
01:09:05They have some relievers that are really stolen to play.
01:09:07So, I would say usually it's going to the series.
01:09:10How much effort put into stealing bags?
01:09:12A lot.
01:09:13As a team.
01:09:14Yeah.
01:09:15As a team, you put into it.
01:09:15But I think we are leading or top two or three in the league and still on bases as a
01:09:19team.
01:09:19So, yeah, we talk about it almost every day.
01:09:22And I would go to the pitchers that we need to look for and kind of exploit and go from
01:09:25there.
01:09:26See, like, in an era, you know, they're always thinking about homers.
01:09:29I mean, these guys are doing it right, you know, hitting for average, you know,
01:09:32they're no other game, stealing bases, you know.
01:09:34And we, myself, and I'm sure you're too, we appreciate what they're doing.
01:09:38No doubt.
01:09:39No doubt.
01:09:40All right, Robert.
01:09:41That's great stuff.
01:09:43Really insightful stuff with Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards.
01:09:45But we're not done because, yes, they can get knocks.
01:09:48And, yes, they can steal bases.
01:09:50And, yes, they look great.
01:09:51But how are they at the easel?
01:09:56Oh.
01:09:56Yeah, we're going to be playing Central Scribbles with the Miami Marlins.
01:10:02Stay with us.
01:10:14Welcome back to MLB Central.
01:10:16It's time now for America's favorite fake game show.
01:10:19It is Central Scribbles, our two teams, Albert Pujols, Mark DeRosa,
01:10:25against Lauren Chahadi and two members of the Miami Marlins.
01:10:28Let's go.
01:10:29Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards.
01:10:31The category.
01:10:32They play for keeps.
01:10:33That's right.
01:10:33The category, Florida.
01:10:35Things found in Florida.
01:10:38Gentlemen, when you're drawing,
01:10:39just remember to stay in one batter's box at the other.
01:10:42You can obviously look at the board when you're trying to guess your partner's clue,
01:10:46or you can look on the big giant monitor.
01:10:49Otto, you're first.
01:10:51Attaboy.
01:10:53Once again, the category is things found in the state of Florida.
01:10:59And remember, just stay in a batter's box and feel free to begin whenever you like, sir.
01:11:04Yeah, he's got to guess.
01:11:05So easy.
01:11:05No, no, yeah, you can do it.
01:11:08Yeah, there you go.
01:11:10There we go.
01:11:11He's leading the league in hitting.
01:11:13That's right.
01:11:13Otto Lopez.
01:11:15At the board.
01:11:16Alligator.
01:11:17Alligator is correct.
01:11:18Oh, my.
01:11:19That is correct.
01:11:21We're off to a good start.
01:11:22That's no fair.
01:11:23I don't know about that top part.
01:11:24If you want to finish it, Otto, feel free.
01:11:27The tail of the air, what's going on with that back part?
01:11:29Yeah.
01:11:29It's perfect.
01:11:30And the gator, go gators.
01:11:32Oh, I see what you're doing.
01:11:33Nice job, Otto.
01:11:34Now, see, there you go.
01:11:37Ian.
01:11:38Excellent work.
01:11:40He's not happy with it.
01:11:42I love that he's finished all his work.
01:11:45I'm trying to cheat.
01:11:46He goes, go draw a palm tree.
01:11:48He's got to give me the clue.
01:11:50Oh, okay.
01:11:50That's why I'm stuck on this side.
01:11:52No, you're good.
01:11:53So you can go grab a seat.
01:11:56That's what makes Otto great.
01:11:58He was not satisfied.
01:12:00I agree.
01:12:01That's a decent alligator.
01:12:02Zero, you're up next to your squad.
01:12:04You ain't going to nap.
01:12:05You ain't going to nap.
01:12:07What is that?
01:12:08I don't know.
01:12:09I didn't come up with the clues.
01:12:10I was just giving them to me.
01:12:11I just worked here.
01:12:12Yeah, I just worked here.
01:12:13Are you ready?
01:12:14Stay with me.
01:12:17I ain't going nowhere.
01:12:18The category, Florida.
01:12:21Miami Marlin members.
01:12:23They're all shang in the sun.
01:12:26Xavier Edwards in studio.
01:12:28Mark DeRosa, Albert Pujols, the team.
01:12:39The beach.
01:12:40The beach.
01:12:41Got it.
01:12:42All right.
01:12:43We're tied at one.
01:12:46What is that?
01:12:47An umbrella.
01:12:48I'm trying to get him on the sand.
01:12:53You're looking at that every day.
01:12:55Here is the clue you're drawing.
01:13:01No words.
01:13:04I don't really play by those rules.
01:13:07Is he going to draw righty or last?
01:13:08Yeah.
01:13:09Okay.
01:13:11Things found in Florida.
01:13:16Xavier Edwards.
01:13:17Am I really going in?
01:13:19At the diesel.
01:13:26Oh, I see what you're doing.
01:13:28I see what you're doing.
01:13:29Bicycle.
01:13:30Is that a wheel?
01:13:32All right.
01:13:32Go get it.
01:13:34Don't panic, Otto.
01:13:35Stay in there.
01:13:36Five seconds.
01:13:37Car.
01:13:38Bicycle.
01:13:39That's correct.
01:13:41We were looking for oranges.
01:13:43We were looking for oranges.
01:13:45He's got the orange wedges.
01:13:46Orange.
01:13:48That's all right.
01:13:49Sorry.
01:13:49That was a good try.
01:13:54That was a good try.
01:13:55I like that you're guessing bicycle.
01:13:58Like bicycles just exclusive.
01:14:00I don't know.
01:14:01I thought it was so good.
01:14:03I know where you were going.
01:14:05Albert, you're next.
01:14:06You're going to dream.
01:14:08The future Hall of Famer.
01:14:09You want to try like Albert?
01:14:11Come on.
01:14:12Ready?
01:14:13Come on, machine.
01:14:14Let's do it.
01:14:15La máquina.
01:14:16Yes, you can begin.
01:14:17The category things found in the state.
01:14:19Palm tree.
01:14:20Got it.
01:14:22I mean, if you're going to draw the palm tree from one line.
01:14:26I don't want to.
01:14:27Where's my palm tree at?
01:14:29He's been here for 15 minutes.
01:14:30And you know he's a prod.
01:14:32Do you want to be like Otto?
01:14:3415 minutes.
01:14:35Thank you so much.
01:14:36I've been seeing that for 12 years.
01:14:37Talk about it.
01:14:38That was so easy.
01:14:39Oh, I know.
01:14:41Palm tree.
01:14:41It's all absurd.
01:14:43We're two to one.
01:14:44We're two to one.
01:14:45Our own Lauren Shahadi.
01:14:49Hey, hey, hey.
01:14:51Hey, hey.
01:14:53Take these.
01:14:54You can do it.
01:14:55Things found in Florida.
01:14:58Remember, that's key here.
01:15:04Oh, okay.
01:15:05Good job.
01:15:07Ice cream?
01:15:08Ice cream cone?
01:15:09I got it.
01:15:10Key, door.
01:15:11Locker door.
01:15:12Key.
01:15:13Clubhouse.
01:15:15Keyhouse.
01:15:15Remember, things found in Florida.
01:15:19What the?
01:15:20Now you're gone rogue.
01:15:22Oh, yeah.
01:15:22I don't know what the lines are.
01:15:24Keyhouse.
01:15:25She said key.
01:15:25Something about house.
01:15:26I can't drop.
01:15:27I'm sorry, we were looking for Florida Keys.
01:15:31Oh, yeah.
01:15:32Yeah, that's a dog.
01:15:35I was going to say Ikea.
01:15:36That's okay.
01:15:38Sorry.
01:15:38Sorry.
01:15:38I was going to drop.
01:15:39I mean, I'm sure there are Ikeas in Florida.
01:15:42You're right.
01:15:44It's okay.
01:15:44We're getting a key.
01:15:45We're getting a key.
01:15:47We're getting a key.
01:15:49Yeah, we are.
01:15:49Still holding on to a two-on-one advantage.
01:15:53It's mixing one of these tough ones for their stuff.
01:15:55That's right.
01:15:56Florida Keys?
01:15:56And they get a palm tree.
01:15:59Yeah, palm tree.
01:16:00That was an easy one.
01:16:03You guys just set me up.
01:16:05I thought this was a good one.
01:16:07Okay.
01:16:08Things found in the state.
01:16:10Oh, boy.
01:16:11Oh, no.
01:16:13No.
01:16:14They went there.
01:16:15I know you guys.
01:16:16They went there.
01:16:17They went there.
01:16:17They went there.
01:16:17They went there.
01:16:19They went there.
01:16:21Pause.
01:16:21Pause.
01:16:22That's crazy.
01:16:23For a base shot?
01:16:24Woo!
01:16:25Woo!
01:16:30Move that thing quick, please.
01:16:33Move that thing quick.
01:16:34And fourth, space shuttle.
01:16:37I knew it once you showed me the car.
01:16:40You're trying to get me canceled for the third time this year.
01:16:43That's why you didn't draw Florida.
01:16:45I thought I'd rather lose.
01:16:47I'm a cockroach.
01:16:48I don't die.
01:16:49All right.
01:16:50All right.
01:16:51We've got a tiebreaker.
01:16:52We've got a tiebreaker here.
01:16:54Tiebreaker.
01:16:55I'm going to draw.
01:16:56It's open to anyone who gets.
01:16:58I think that kissy thinks they already won.
01:17:00It's not happening.
01:17:01We're three points.
01:17:02China.
01:17:02How can I draw?
01:17:03I don't even know what this is.
01:17:06I don't even know what this is.
01:17:10Jellyfish.
01:17:12Oh, God.
01:17:13I don't even know how to draw South Beach.
01:17:42¡Gracias!

01:18:51The legend is here. Hi, Tom.
01:18:53Takes a splash in that guy's cup.
01:18:55Splash. Shucking oyster.
01:18:57That's just outrageous. Given everything he's got
01:18:59in his old stomping grounds. I haven't thought of the hot doors.
01:19:02Joey Chestnut would not have
01:19:03consumed 11 by this time.
01:19:05There is career hit number 1,800.
01:19:07Thank you for this. And to the same guys.
01:19:10A 2-for-2 night.
01:19:1110 strikeouts for Skeens.
01:19:14He's in control tonight.
01:19:16He certainly was.
01:19:18Hey, the Cubs put that 10-game losing streak
01:19:20behind them by winning back-to-back games.
01:19:22And now, they will try to make it
01:19:24even more of a distant memory
01:19:26when they face their division rival
01:19:27Cardinals tonight.
01:19:28Chicago just a half-game better in the standings
01:19:31and showed it.
01:19:32And Managa wants to make it more.
01:19:34He will look to regain that form.
01:19:35That saw him post a 2-1-7
01:19:37through his first five starts of the season.
01:19:40Out west. Don't look now.
01:19:41But the Diamondbacks have been playing
01:19:43some pretty good baseball.
01:19:45Winners of 10 of their last 11.
01:19:47And it is up to Zach Gallin to keep it up.
01:19:50Did you know Arizona sits just four games back
01:19:52and the Dodgers in the lost column
01:19:54currently sitting in a wild-card spot
01:19:56if the season ended today.
01:19:5810-10 tonight.
01:19:59And about those Dodgers,
01:20:01let's find out a little something
01:20:02about the National League this weekend.
01:20:04Shall we?
01:20:05Philly's coming to town.
01:20:06They brought Zach Wheeler with them
01:20:08since coming back this year.
01:20:10He's made six starts.

01:20:20Can't wait.
01:20:20Starts tonight in the City of Angels.

01:20:36through the minor league communities
01:20:37that really shape it.
01:20:38Shining light on the game beyond the field
01:20:40where the people, the places,
01:20:42and the traditions matter.
01:20:43Just as much as the action between the lines.
01:20:46Here's a preview of Sunday's episode.
01:20:52The first thing people realize
01:20:54is the history of Montgomery
01:20:56and that history is real.
01:20:57So while that history is in the past,
01:21:00it also helps us move forward
01:21:01in a positive way.
01:21:04Just like a lot of other
01:21:06of the 120 minor league teams,
01:21:08the baseball is not what we do, right?
01:21:10The Tampa Bay Rays do a phenomenal job
01:21:12of sending amazing athletes here
01:21:14and we let them handle the baseball
01:21:15and we handle everything outside the line.
01:21:26Ballpark camp takes us to Houston
01:21:27where the Astros,
01:21:29who have won 7 of 10
01:21:30after coming off a successful road trip,
01:21:32they are now back at home
01:21:34at Dykin Park
01:21:34where they welcome
01:21:35the red-hot Milwaukee Brewers.

01:23:24Layout.
01:23:24Best of MLB Central.
01:23:25Layout here.
01:23:27Well, I forgot your birthday
01:23:28on Saturday.
01:23:29And I am a birthday person.
01:23:31I've never forgot your birthday
01:23:32in my entire life.
01:23:34This guy came up
01:23:34to my sister
01:23:35at a gelato restaurant
01:23:36and tapped her on the behind
01:23:37and said,
01:23:37Ciao, Bella.
01:23:38And I said like this
01:23:39and the tour guide goes,
01:23:40no, that's customary.
01:23:41I'm like,
01:23:42wait, what?
01:23:43Where'd you say
01:23:43this place was again?
01:23:45Be awesome today.
01:23:47He's a life coach.
01:23:48You know where he starts?
01:23:49Ketel Marte.
01:23:50Sit down, Ketel.
01:23:51Meryl Kelly.
01:23:53Wow.
01:23:54It's a tough shot right there.
01:23:55Meryl, can't be that bad.
01:23:56You're loaded.
01:23:57What'd you have for breakfast?
01:23:58I had a fireball shot
01:23:59and a champagne glass.
01:24:01That's my doll.
01:24:02You know,
01:24:02I got a riding lawnmower.
01:24:04How can I get rid of it?
01:24:05I'll come get it.
01:24:06Take it to the hood.
01:24:07I went to Milwaukee
01:24:09and when you pass the kitchen
01:24:10on the right,
01:24:11it's like a Candyland.
01:24:13How often are you in that room?
01:24:14I can't stay in there.
01:24:15You know,
01:24:15our nutrition's out.
01:24:16I mean,
01:24:17he's on me, man.
01:24:17I would get down
01:24:18almost too early.
01:24:19Yeah.
01:24:20And then it would be like
01:24:20a double load.
01:24:22So it's like,
01:24:23you know,
01:24:23and then you get rotational
01:24:24and you're just limiting
01:24:26that fluidity
01:24:27of being in the zone.
01:24:29Do you believe in love, Robert?
01:24:30Do you believe in love?
01:24:31I mean,
01:24:32I guess.
01:24:32If I started going around
01:24:33my apartment,
01:24:35I'm sniffing it out.
01:24:36That wasn't the Guardians
01:24:37you were smelling.
01:24:37I'll give you a hint.
01:24:38Six and a half.
01:24:39Okay, Roberto Clement.
01:24:41We talk about all the time
01:24:42guys who come off
01:24:43their backside or leak.
01:24:45You can't get your body.
01:24:46You'd have to recoil
01:24:47to put yourself
01:24:48in that position.
01:24:50This is starting to get real
01:24:51from the right side now.
01:24:52It's starting to get
01:24:53a little frisky though.
01:24:55If they're willing
01:24:56to lay on their backs
01:24:57and expose their vitals
01:24:58like that,
01:24:59full trust.
01:25:00I'm going to be exposing
01:25:01my vitals now.
01:25:04Gross.
01:25:05Because I've got full trust.
01:25:07Gross.
01:25:09It's been a week.
01:25:10You're gross.
01:25:12You are.
01:25:12You have a dirty mind.
01:25:14He does.
01:25:15Hey,
01:25:15time to go on a Friday.
01:25:16Time to walk it off.
01:25:17Wild story.

01:25:19that came to light yesterday,
01:25:20May 18th and 19th,
01:25:21a couple accidentally
01:25:22showed up to a game
01:25:23without tickets.
01:25:24They had tickets
01:25:25to the next night's game.
01:25:27So they said,
01:25:27we'll buy two tickets.
01:25:28Bought two tickets,
01:25:29called a Willie Adamas
01:25:30home run.
01:25:31Came back the next night
01:25:32with their original tickets.
01:25:33Willie Adamas home run.
01:25:35Wow.
01:25:35No way.
01:25:36If you don't believe,
01:25:38that's unbelievable.
01:25:39What do you believe in?
01:25:39Stand for something
01:25:40or you're going to fall
01:25:40for everything.
01:25:41I stand for getting
01:25:42out of here right now.
01:25:44MLB Now,
01:25:45up next.
