Reports suggest that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has defended President Donald Trump’s controversial “blow up” warning directed at a Gulf ally, following growing diplomatic tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz situation.

According to emerging discussions, Bessent is also said to have held private or behind-the-scenes communication linked to Oman, a key regional mediator in ongoing U.S.–Iran negotiations.

The remarks come amid heightened geopolitical pressure in the Gulf region, where Washington is attempting to balance military deterrence, diplomatic negotiations, and energy security concerns.

Oman has played a major role as a mediator in recent U.S.–Iran talks, especially regarding ceasefire extensions, maritime security, and potential agreements over the Strait of Hormuz.

The controversy surrounding Trump’s reported comments has sparked debate over U.S. foreign policy strategy and the tone of American messaging toward Gulf allies during sensitive negotiations.

This video breaks down the latest developments, Scott Bessent’s reported defense of Trump’s remarks, and what it means for U.S.–Gulf relations and Iran diplomacy.

00:00I think the president wanted to punctuate freedom of navigation in the strait.
00:05I had a call with the Omani ambassador this morning,
00:08and he assured me that there were no plans for tolling the strait.
00:13As he said, our countries have had 200 years of good relations.
00:16He wants to have another 200 more.
00:18And I told him that this was a non-starter,
00:22and he did not want to risk either the Omani individuals
00:26or Omani financial institutions getting sanctioned.
00:30President Trump said Oman will behave just like everybody else
00:34for we will have to blow them up.
00:37Are you guys back there in the West Wing making plans for a new war with Oman?
00:42Again, I think the president wanted to punctuate freedom of navigation in the strait.
00:48I had a call with the Omani ambassador this morning,
00:51and he assured me that there were no plans for tolling the strait.
00:55As he said, our countries have had 200 years of good relations.
00:59He wants to have another 200 more.
01:01And I told him that this was a non-starter,
01:05and he did not want to risk either the Omani individuals
01:09or Omani financial institutions getting sanctioned.
01:13Dr. Buckley.
01:16Thank you, Mr. Secretary.
01:17Is it in the U.S. interest to waive some sanctions on Iran
01:21or to unfreeze some of their assets before Iran has made concrete promises
01:27about getting rid of their nuclear program?
01:30Again, I'm not going to preview the deal,
01:32but I would think that things would go very slowly in terms of that.
01:39So we'll see.
01:43Just to follow up on that,
01:44because it's our understanding that the U.S. has committed to discussing
01:47the matter of sanctions relief during this negotiation period.
01:50So just to be clear, is sanctions relief for Iran on the table?
01:54Again, it is a multifaceted agreement,
01:57and nothing is going to be on the table
02:01until we see the Strait of Ramos open
02:03and the Iranians agree that they have to turn over
02:09the highly enriched uranium
02:11and that they can't have a nuclear program.
02:14And to be clear here,
02:17that this administration, President Trump,
02:19has done something that no other administration is able to do.
02:22We have gotten the Iranians to talk about their nuclear program
02:26and to perhaps commit to not having one.
02:29That has never happened before.
02:30It had been off the table.
02:32So I think when you look at the results of the kinetic action
02:35of our economic pressure,
02:37it has worked to bring them to the table
02:39and have a discussion on this.
02:40Mr. Secretary, I just want to follow up.
02:44You said that the teams have been going back and forth,
02:47but can you confirm whether or not a tentative agreement
02:50has been reached in these negotiations with Iran?
02:53Mr. Secretary, again, everything depends on
02:55what the president wants to do,
02:58and President Trump is not going to make a bad deal
03:00for the American people, for the U.S.,
03:04and he was very clear at the Cabinet meeting
03:06on yesterday what he wants.
03:10Secretary, Secretary, Secretary, Secretary, Secretary, Secretary.
03:13Secretary, Secretary, Secretary, Secretary.
