The One Show - Season Episode 89
Transcript
00:11Hello there and welcome to your Tuesday One Show live with Roman Kemp and Alex Jones.
00:16Now, it's safe to say that Eurovision fever is well and truly in the air,
00:20because in just an hour's time here on BBC One the first semi-final will begin in Vienna.
00:25Yes, and right at the heart of all the action is Ryland and Angela Scanlon.
00:30And later on, they'll be telling us about some of tonight's show-stopping performances.
00:35Plus, they'll be catching up with the UK's entry, Look Mum, No Computer,
00:38as he prepares to perform in front of millions at the grand final on Saturday.
00:43It's come round quick. Very quick.
00:45And joining us on the sofa tonight is Eurovision superfan Mel Gidroich alongside comedian Lou Sanders.
00:51They've teamed up to bring us a brilliant new comedy game show,
00:54which sees two teams of comedians battle their way out of epic escape rooms,
00:59all whilst Mel just kind of sits back and watches the chaos unfold.
01:02It's her dream.
01:03And someone who would be in their element on that show is Bear Grylls.
01:08He'll be here telling us all about his latest survival series,
01:11where he takes Hollywood stars like Matthew McConaughey and Uma Thurman out of their comfort zone,
01:16getting them to open up like never before.
01:18And completing our line-up is comedian and actor Bob Odenkirk,
01:23who made us laugh, of course, in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul
01:27and kept us on the edge of our seats as an ex-assassin in Nobody.
01:30And now he's playing a small-town sheriff whose dreams of a quiet life
01:34is thrown into chaos in his latest action movie, Normal.
01:38He'll be telling us all about it later on.
01:40So, loads coming up.
01:41But first, with half-term on the horizon,
01:44a time when many people are thinking about getting away,
01:46we are starting tonight by talking about flights.
01:49Yeah, with news today that 60% of Brits are currently rethinking
01:53their holiday plans abroad due to the reported fuel shortages
01:57and global uncertainty.
01:58Simon Calder has been separating the fact from the fiction for concerned travellers.
02:05With high fuel prices and reports of thousands of flights being cut,
02:10holidaymakers are concerned about booking a place in the sun.
02:14The travel companies are urging people not to change their holiday plans.
02:20But with the rising price of aviation fuel
02:23and concern about possible shortages,
02:26I've come to Manchester to see if I can soothe some holiday nerves.
02:33In reality, only about 1% of flights worldwide have been cancelled in May.
02:39Where are you off to this summer?
02:41Nothing planned.
02:42Fuel crisis, planes' flights being cancelled.
02:45They're all adds in the mix.
02:46Well, OK.
02:47I've been talking to all the big holiday companies
02:49and they say,
02:50yep, we're going to be running things absolutely as normal
02:53and we won't be charging you anything extra either.
02:57I might go and have a look and check it out.
02:59If our flights get cancelled because of a fuel shortage,
03:02does our insurance cover it?
03:04It shouldn't even get anywhere close to being an insurance claim
03:07because if the airline cancels,
03:10they've got to come up with something which will get you to your destination.
03:15Should I book my trips for maybe next year or this year sooner rather than later?
03:19I think if you find a price that you like, then lock into it now
03:24because at the moment the airlines have locked into lower costs for aviation fuel.
03:30If the UK was to experience fuel shortages,
03:34the government could authorise airlines to cancel or combine flights weeks in advance,
03:41reducing last-minute disruption for passengers.
03:44I'm off to Las Vegas this summer for my son's wedding.
03:48Should I have any concerns?
03:49I think it's very unlikely that flights to Las Vegas,
03:54which is so important for holiday makers,
03:56are going to be effective because the airlines bluntly make lots of money from it.
04:01You might find that a couple of flights get combined,
04:05but you'll still get there, you'll still have a seat.
04:08I wanted to go to quite a few places in Europe actually,
04:11but I'd already get cancellation of my flights or get stuck in the airport.
04:14I'm actually going to Venice next week
04:16and I keep getting notifications on my phone saying that there's loads of cancellations.
04:21Are these from the airline?
04:23Er, news organisations mainly.
04:25Right.
04:26I think the odds are overwhelming that your flight will just go ahead as normal
04:31and furthermore you'll have a wonderful time in Italy.
04:34Oh, thank you.
04:38Ah, thank you, Simon.
04:39It's good to get that reassurance, isn't it?
04:42Yeah, very nice, very helpful to so many people, I'm sure.
04:45Time now, though, to say hello to our guests.
04:48It's Adventure of Bear Grylls, star of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul,
04:50Bob Odenkirk, and comedians, Mel Gedrudge and Lucy Sanders.
04:57Well, hello, one and all. Welcome, welcome.
05:01Mel, start with you because a certain person is very jealous
05:06I know.
05:07that you were on the show tonight with Bob.
05:10Next to Bob.
05:10Look at me.
05:11What did I do?
05:12So, my comedy partner, Sue Perkins.
05:15Oh, yeah?
05:15Your second comedy partner.
05:16Second comedy partner, Sue Perkins.
05:18First.
05:19First was, what happened?
05:21No, no, she's still my comedy partner.
05:23Oh, okay.
05:23It's all good.
05:24Sue Perkins.
05:25Sue Perkins.
05:25She absolutely, blooming, loves you.
05:28Oh, wow.
05:29She loves Better Call Saul.
05:30Right.
05:31She loves Breaking Bad.
05:32She loves, she loves you as well, there.
05:34Yeah.
05:34She also loves, she loves everybody.
05:35Oh, yeah, but.
05:36Particularly you.
05:37And we love her.
05:38And we love her.
05:39That's nice to hear.
05:40Well, what happened?
05:41Why didn't she get invited?
05:42Well, I don't know.
05:43Another time.
05:44I'll meet her next time.
05:46You will, Bob.
05:46That's very nice to hear.
05:47Exactly.
05:47You will, Bob.
05:48Well, someone else who Mel has teamed up with is of course Lou here because they've got
05:53a brand new comedy game show called The Way Out which sees six comedians battling to
05:58find their way out of a series of escape rooms.
06:00Yes, but with tough physical challenges and the clock ticking, do they have what it takes
06:05to make their escape?
06:06Let's have a look.
06:07Two teams of comedians have to find a way out of my cunning escape rooms in the fastest
06:12time possible.
06:13That's a hole in my neck!
06:15These escape artists are going head to head across four fantastical worlds.
06:20Yeah!
06:21Adonai moi!
06:22Where every second counts.
06:23Time is ticking.
06:25We know time is ticking!
06:27Time is always ticking!
06:28But only one team will crack the clues, beat the clock and escape to be crowned champions.
06:34UI is easier than this.
06:35This is The Way Out.
06:40Now then now, this looks brilliant.
06:43So it's you hosting, in charge.
06:45Yes.
06:45Two teams headed up by Ed Gamble.
06:47Yes.
06:48Nish Kumar.
06:49Amazing.
06:49And then you're all in these escape rooms with different themes.
06:54We were in Belgium, Al.
06:55Yeah.
06:56It was really exciting.
06:57The show's gone a bit nuts in Belgium.
06:59I'm not saying it'll go nuts here.
07:00We don't know that yet.
07:02It's out tonight.
07:03Let's hope.
07:03Fingers crossed.
07:04Fingers crossed.
07:05Yeah.
07:05Did it get out of Belgium?
07:08It's...
07:08Yeah.
07:09You clearly did.
07:11Well done.
07:12We made it out, Bob.
07:13Yeah.
07:13That bit was quite easy just on the Eurostar.
07:15I mean, it wasn't even a queue.
07:17There are four escape rooms that the Belgians have built.
07:20I thought the kitchen was an escape room, but that was just the kitchen.
07:23That was just the kitchen.
07:24Yeah.
07:24Here's what would stump me in an escape room.
07:27Have you never done one, Bob?
07:28Never done one.
07:28I didn't...
07:29Here's what...
07:30If you want to shut me down, do math.
07:33There is...
07:34Any math.
07:35You know, math doesn't make the best...
07:36It's just annoying.
07:37It doesn't make the best TV.
07:38I can't play blackjack because it's too much math.
07:40I think you'd be good in an escape room, actually, Bob.
07:43Oh, really?
07:43With the puzzly bits.
07:44Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
07:46The puzzly bits.
07:47The locks.
07:47My wife, Naomi, would be great.
07:49Really?
07:49She loves that kind of thing.
07:51Does she?
07:51Yes.
07:51Me, I'm just annoyed.
07:53It's like another errand you've given me that I don't need.
07:56But, Lou, you were chosen by Ed Gamble to be on his team.
08:00Yeah.
08:00We don't know who'd said no before he...
08:02Fine.
08:03Okay.
08:04Let's rephrase.
08:05You ended up on Ed Gamble's team.
08:07Yeah.
08:08And what was that team camaraderie like?
08:10How did you work together?
08:12Yeah, I love Ed.
08:12I've worked with him lots of times before.
08:14We went driving for the driving show.
08:16Also on you, you and Dave, if you want to stream that.
08:19There we go.
08:20Dangerous Roads.
08:21But, yeah, I've worked with him a lot before.
08:22He does get a bit antsy.
08:24He'll hate me saying that.
08:25A bit?
08:25On the escape rooms, because he takes it really seriously.
08:29Oh, okay.
08:29Ed actually does it.
08:30Ed Gamble's a comedian.
08:31You probably know him.
08:32Lovely guy.
08:34Takes it very, very seriously.
08:35He's like Captain Manoring on this.
08:38Okay.
08:39It's hilarious.
08:41It's hilarious.
08:41Her references are from the 1950s.
08:44But, yeah, he takes it quite seriously, but that doesn't, it doesn't matter to me.
08:51But the more hatchet-faced he got, the funnier it got.
08:56I can imagine.
08:57Bette, what do you do in an escape room?
08:59Because you'd probably be excellent at it.
09:01I'd be all over it.
09:02Yeah, all over it.
09:03I quite like that sort of thing.
09:04Like Bob, I'm not great with the maths, I've got to be honest.
09:07But I like the improvising and adapting, you've got to figure it out.
09:11The problem with you in an escape room is you'd be like, well, where are we going to live in
09:14here?
09:15Yeah.
09:15Oh, you're supposed to get out?
09:17Yeah.
09:17You're like, no, we've got enough stuff, we can make food out of these traps.
09:22Yeah, exactly.
09:22We had one which was an enormous hamster cage, and I can see you bedding down in the straw,
09:28because there's one called Honey I Shrunk the Comedians, and they all ended up in a big hamster cage.
09:33It was brilliant.
09:34It was so good.
09:35I bet you loved that, Lou.
09:36And we got shrunk, didn't we, by taking the pen?
09:39No, we didn't.
09:40We didn't actually use the Magicka TV.
09:42But that was really good.
09:43You got to run along in a hamster wheel.
09:45That was my favourite one.
09:46But there was one that you really didn't enjoy?
09:50The one where we were at sea.
09:52Yeah.
09:52That was tough.
09:53Wait, you did a bunch of these?
09:55Four.
09:55You don't just get to do one, get out, you're done?
09:58Four.
09:58You had to escape four times?
10:00It's a four-part series, so just the one would be a bit dark.
10:03But one at sea, and yeah, you've got fish everywhere and stuff like that.
10:07It was crazy.
10:07Yeah, and...
10:09Wasn't it rocking, though?
10:10Yeah, it was rocking.
10:10She was green.
10:11She was as green as this sofa, poor love.
10:14I did think I was going to throw up.
10:15But I want you to know that I'm also quite gnarly.
10:18I bet.
10:19Yeah.
10:20And you survived, you made it.
10:22They had an effect where it went like this, you can understand my problem.
10:256-7?
10:26Yeah, 6-7.
10:27Come on.
10:28That's very current.
10:31This is very current.
10:32Very.
10:34Well, look, you can watch The Way Out, which starts tonight, 9 o'clock on you and Dave,
10:40and you can stream it on you.
10:42Was that the snort?
10:44Still to come tonight, Bob will be telling us about working with the legendary Hendry Winkler,
10:49a.k.a. the Fonz, in his new action movie, Normal.
10:51Yeah, but first, the countdown to Saturday's grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest has officially begun,
10:56which I know, Mel, you're very excited about.
10:58And very shortly here on BBC One, 15 of the 35 countries competing for a place will be taking to
11:04the stage for the first of this week's semifinals in Vienna.
11:08And Rylan and Angela Scanlon are there now as the excitement fills.
11:12We can join them.
11:13Good evening, Vienna.
11:14This is London calling.
11:16What's it like over there?
11:18You two look fantastic.
11:21Oh, bless you, babe.
11:23Good evening, London.
11:24And a big hello to Mel as well.
11:26Milkmaid extraordinaire.
11:28We absolutely adore you.
11:29Guys, yeah, we are here live in Vienna.
11:32This is the gorgeous arena that we are in for the 70th Eurovision Song Contest.
11:37Tonight is semi-final one coming up at 8pm on BBC One.
11:41And it's your first time.
11:43I know.
11:44How are you finding it?
11:45Honestly, I'm finding it incredible.
11:47I feel like, I imagine this is what it's like being the Pope's plus one.
11:51I'm just floating around in, basking in the light and I'm delighted.
11:57Literally couldn't be happier.
11:58Well, do you know what? It's lovely to have you here, babe.
12:00And do you know what? It's not just us here.
12:02Because our boy, lovely Sam, Look Mum No Computer is going to be performing in the grand final on Saturday
12:09because we are part of the Big Four.
12:11We get the automatic entry, but you're going to get a preview of his performance on Thursday evening
12:16in semi-final two.
12:18And Sam joins us now.
12:19Come in here, Sam.
12:21Hello.
12:21Sam, it's so lovely to see you.
12:23Oh, nice to see you too.
12:24It really hit me.
12:25I'm starting to experience Eurovision.
12:27It's all happening behind us.
12:28The adrenaline.
12:30Yeah, no.
12:30It's suddenly hit.
12:31It's suddenly hit.
12:32It's like...
12:33Yeah.
12:33Sam, the One Show viewers have been following your journey since February.
12:37How are you feeling now that we're at crunch time?
12:39Um, yeah.
12:40I'm feeling pretty good.
12:41I'm feeling pretty confident as well.
12:42I mean, there's a lot of risk going to be happening.
12:44It all might go weird.
12:46I might fall off things.
12:47Risk.
12:47I'm excited.
12:48We love risk.
12:48Risk pays off.
12:50That's what we're hoping for.
12:51What can...
12:51Can you give us anything?
12:52We've seen furry television with teeth like this, man.
12:56I mean, you have stolen my teeth and they are trademarked.
12:58Yeah, I'm sorry.
12:59Well, the check will be in the post.
13:01Yeah, there is a lawsuit going on.
13:03Yeah, we've got...
13:03There's a lot of things going on.
13:05There's multiple costume changes.
13:07The dancers start with a lot of weight on.
13:09So they're going to be stripping down.
13:11De-roping.
13:12Yeah, not fully.
13:13But I might add.
13:14It's the BBC.
13:15Keep it family friendly.
13:16That's what we say.
13:17Sam, honestly, it's been so lovely working with you this year.
13:20You've been such lovely.
13:21And congratulations, because you had a baby like literally like four weeks ago.
13:24Hello, Max.
13:25Hello.
13:25Hello, Max.
13:27This is your dad, Max.
13:28This is your dad.
13:29This is your dad.
13:30A little milk slug at home watching the telly.
13:33Divine.
13:33Yeah, I love him so much.
13:34He's so lovely.
13:36Well, look, we adore you.
13:37You've been such a pleasure.
13:38But listen, you are going to get a preview of Sam's performance on Thursday night's semi-final.
13:43So join us then.
13:44But a couple of others to look out for as well.
13:46We've got a good night coming up tonight.
13:48We've got a big night.
13:48Couple of favourites.
13:50Finland, a favourite.
13:52Pete and Linda.
13:53Pete and Linda.
13:54Pete and Linda.
13:55Iconic.
13:56Sounds like a Gogglebox couple.
13:58It does, doesn't it?
13:58Yeah, I love it.
13:59We've also got San Marino featuring our very own Boy George.
14:03So, Senhit is a friend of Eurovision.
14:05She's done it a million times.
14:07She is going to be joined by actual Boy George.
14:09And on Thursday night, you know this because she's been on the One Show so far, Delta Goodrum
14:13is representing Australia.
14:15So listen, whether you're into Eurovision or not, you're going to be missing out.
14:18It is the live event of the year.
14:20Make sure you join us at 8pm tonight live on BBC One for semi-final one of the 70th Eurovision
14:26Song Contest.
14:27Come on, UK.
14:28Very, very good.
14:30Very exciting.
14:31Very good.
14:32Thank you, guys.
14:33Come on, gang.
14:33It's going to be a great show.
14:35Come on, Sam.
14:35What I loved there was the crash course for Bob from Mel.
14:39It was a quick rundown of Eurovision.
14:41This is how it happened.
14:42Yeah, it was really, really good.
14:43No better person to tell you, Bob.
14:44It's very confusing.
14:45I still am not sure what's going on.
14:47It's phenomenal.
14:47Yeah, but it's great fun.
14:49It is.
14:49It is so, so good.
14:50I promise you.
14:51Sounds like a train wreck.
14:52No.
14:52No.
14:53You will absolutely love it.
14:55I promise.
14:55Literally train wreck.
14:56I promise.
14:57Well, look, you can follow all the Eurovision action tonight at 8 o'clock on BBC One and
15:01iPlayer as well as Radio 2 and you can follow Thursday's second semi-final and the grand
15:06final on Saturday at the same time and place.
15:09Still to come tonight, Bear will be telling us about pushing Hollywood A-listers to their limits
15:14in his latest series of Running Wild.
15:16Yeah, and we've got more adrenaline-fuelled action for you now with Bob because having
15:21previously flexed his action hero muscles as an ex-assassin in Nobody, he's now taking
15:25on the Japanese mafia in his new crime thriller, Normal.
15:29Yes, he plays a small-town sheriff who uncovers a dark secret while investigating a bank robbery.
15:36Now, before we talk all about it, let's have a look.
15:38I took a sheriff job in a little town called Normal, Minnesota.
15:44Weather advisory.
15:45Winter storm threatening later this week.
15:47Reports two people screaming at each other.
15:49All right!
15:51Separate!
15:51Separate!
15:52People seem friendly enough.
15:53What do you think of our little town?
15:55It's, um, charming.
15:56Keep your hands so I can see them!
15:59If you don't play this right, we're gonna have a massacre in there.
16:13You see that car flip over?
16:15Yeah!
16:16That real car that really flipped.
16:18And our director's named Ben Wheatley, he's made many films.
16:22British guy, great guy, great fun.
16:25And he brought fun to the whole movie.
16:27And, uh, he insisted that we flip a real car and, uh, have real people.
16:32He, he knew how to do it safely.
16:34It was very clever.
16:36In a controlled environment.
16:37It looks like there's people about to get crushed, but they never.
16:40Oh!
16:40Sounds like a train wreck.
16:42Yeah!
16:42But an intentional.
16:44Yeah!
16:44An intentional one.
16:45We made our train wreck.
16:46It wasn't by happenstance.
16:48Well, let's get to the plot then, because you play Ulysses, who's the sheriff.
16:52And he's moved to this town called...
16:54He's a temporary sheriff to fill in because the previous sheriff died under mysterious
16:59circumstances.
17:01And my character, Ulysses, is a kind of world-weary fellow.
17:05I'd say he's the first person I played who's my age.
17:08Uh, and, uh, he kind of knows something's wrong, but he doesn't want to look.
17:14Yeah.
17:14He wants it to just go away.
17:16Oh, nice.
17:16Which I understand.
17:17I understand that feeling of, like, something's wrong with the house.
17:20Let's not look at it.
17:21Turn away.
17:21Maybe it'll repair itself.
17:23So, I mean, it's, it's, it's, it's obviously, it's quite a graphic film.
17:26And at a certain point, it's kind of a suspense movie for about the first half hour.
17:31It almost feels like a Hitchcock movie.
17:33And then, boom, and I mean boom, it becomes a lot of things exploding.
17:39Well, Teasus, where does it all kind of start going wrong?
17:42Uh, a bank robbery, uh, happens and that just goes.
17:46Which minute?
17:47Which minute?
17:4827.
17:4932.
17:50Yeah.
17:51But first, yeah.
17:52Anyway.
17:53Loaded with fun.
17:55Yeah.
17:55And loaded with different tones.
17:56It's got a little bit of a horror movie in it.
17:59It's got a lot of comedy.
18:00It's got a lot of action and a little suspense too.
18:03I can't wait.
18:03And it's got a great cast.
18:05Yes.
18:05Because Henry Winkler, the form.
18:06Henry Winkler's there.
18:08And guess what?
18:09We, we convinced him not to wear a leather jacket.
18:12He said that.
18:14That was his rule.
18:15He had to be wearing it.
18:16Did you say, did you, somebody must have said, aye.
18:19When he first walked up.
18:20Everyone.
18:20A few thousand people.
18:22Yeah.
18:22But he's been on here lots of times.
18:24He's nice, isn't he?
18:25Nice boy.
18:26He's the nicest guy ever, anywhere.
18:28Yeah.
18:29And it's all real.
18:30Because I've met him on stage and off and backstage and I've gone to his house and he's
18:35genuinely the sweetest guy ever.
18:38And now in this movie, that's not the case.
18:41Yeah.
18:42Well, I mean, Bob, so many people have loved your work, but then we got to see that kind
18:46of action hero side of you in Nobody, of course.
18:50Yes.
18:50But am I right in thinking that when you shoot a fight scene, you want it to feel almost as
18:55relatable as possible.
18:56Yes, that's true.
18:57I mean, I said I wanted to do action and I couldn't believe I got some positive responses
19:02from anybody.
19:03Yeah.
19:04And then I trained for it, but I asked myself, what can I do in this space that's unique?
19:08And then I realized, well, I can fall down and I can get hurt because no action heroes,
19:15you know, want to look vulnerable and human.
19:18And so my character in this movie, I fall down twice in the fights and that's me falling
19:23down and we just keep it in because I say that that's what I'm doing in this world is
19:28I'm playing a guy who looks like a regular guy and does his best, but always looks like
19:35he's about to fail.
19:36I love that.
19:37No superpowers or anything like that.
19:39No superpowers.
19:40Nope.
19:40Love it.
19:41I bet they're livid about the insurance.
19:43You know what?
19:44I train and they trust me.
19:47I'm not allowed to fly through the air.
19:49Fine.
19:50But we spoke earlier about Better Call Saul because of all Sue Perkins big fan.
19:54And you doubted yourself, didn't you, Bob, a bit about that role, wondered whether you
20:00could do it.
20:00And then you've turned to Humphrey Bogart and thought, right, I'm going to look at him.
20:04I turned to him and said, we can do it, buddy.
20:06You know what it is?
20:07I just was like at the later stage of life being invited to be the lead in a TV series
20:15and I thought, you know, I'm just not a leading guy.
20:17I'm a character guy.
20:19And I thought there's one character actor who became a leading man who if I just make
20:26him my saint for this, maybe he can lead me into the light.
20:30And it was Humphrey Bogart because he did so many films before he was a leading man.
20:35Yeah.
20:36I mean, maybe 20, 30 films.
20:38And he wasn't the most classically handsome person ever.
20:43And yet the audience accepted him as the lead.
20:46And I thought, well, if that's been done once, maybe I can make my way a little ways into that.
20:52So it's it sounds vain, but it was just I just had to have some proof that there's a possible
20:59chance I could do it.
21:00Well, it went fantastically well. Yeah, exactly. And Bob's film Normal is in cinemas from Friday.
21:07And from blockbuster action on the big screen to real life action on the small screen,
21:12because for 12 years, Bear has been taking Hollywood stars on epic adventures in his hit survival series.
21:17Yeah, he's abseiled with Channing Tatum, climbed mountains with Kate Hudson.
21:22But now, well, he's at it again. Bear Grylls is running wild.
21:28We're not in Texas anymore. I know that.
21:34If ever there is a place to expect the unexpected, it's here.
21:40Bear, that toilet paper, you threw it away, didn't you?
21:42Use the leaves.
21:43Want to do a crevasse jump here?
21:45What? No.
21:47Uber.
21:48I didn't take a lesson of this.
21:50Have you ever jumped before?
21:51No, no, I've never jumped before.
21:57That's incredible.
21:59So the celebrities have 48 hours to be with you and learn how to survive.
22:04And of course, you go to all these incredible locations.
22:07But some of them are here in the UK because you're really keen, aren't you,
22:11to show that we've got these amazing places on our doorstep.
22:14Well, the show is originally American.
22:17So we did...
22:18This is season nine now.
22:20So for the first few seasons, we were predominantly in America.
22:23And then we'd travel further.
22:24There would be all these remote jungles.
22:26But actually, as you know, the UK is so amazing.
22:29I think over the years, I've kind of really wanted to show more of that.
22:33We live part of the year in Wales.
22:35And as you know, Alex, it's like, it's so beautiful.
22:38Yeah.
22:38So we did the Coleman Domingo one and Uma Thurman up in North Wales.
22:43Did she love it?
22:44Yeah.
22:45She's a real, she's a real adventure spirit.
22:48You know, she said, don't hold back.
22:50Give the full, you know, turn the dial to 12.
22:54Yeah.
22:54And at the end, she was, like so often with these guests,
22:58there's a light in the eye, super proud of themselves,
23:01have faced some fears, come through.
23:03They always start off looking immaculate, like kind of this.
23:07And then they end up looking like this.
23:09Yeah.
23:09But, and I like that because you get to know the real person on that journey.
23:14Sounds great.
23:14The veneer gets kind of washed off and it's good.
23:17The wild does.
23:17Can I ask a very quick question?
23:18Yeah, go on.
23:19So my husband wants to do the Essex Way this summer,
23:23Epping Forest to Harwich, 74 miles, sleeping under hedgerows.
23:27What do we do, Bear?
23:28Do we sleep in a bivouac?
23:29Do we take a tent?
23:31What do we do?
23:32You're going to do it together?
23:32We're going to do it together.
23:33So fun.
23:34What a great adventure.
23:35The Essex Way.
23:35Why don't you do like one night camping, one night, find a little B&B.
23:39There you go.
23:39Like, you know, you want to make it fun and manageable.
23:41He wants hedgerows.
23:42Yeah.
23:43Well, there's Mel B under a bush.
23:44There you go.
23:45Bear, what I think as well people really love about your show is that,
23:49you know, as you mentioned there, that kind of veneer comes off of,
23:52you know, this celebrity thing that we talk about.
23:54Particularly, they really open up, I know Matthew McConaughey
23:57in last week's episode was talking about parenthood.
23:59Why do you think it is that the outdoors does just get these people talking
24:03and, you know, being real?
24:06I think you have time.
24:07You know, these sort of things are like, everything's fast, fast, fast.
24:10But you kind of, you're out in the outdoors, you cross a river
24:13and you look each other in the whites of your eyes a few times
24:16and you face those fears and you're cold and you're wet and hungry.
24:21And, you know, by the time you sit around a campfire in the evening
24:23and, you know, it's like nature's TV, isn't it?
24:26And you're drying your socks.
24:27And these people talk about the real stuff.
24:30And I think the kind of magic, I always say the real star of Running Wild
24:34is actually the wild.
24:35It opens people up and people are often just really honest.
24:39And I think it's a beautiful part of the show.
24:42It's a part I love really.
24:43But you kind of got to go through the kind of pain first a little bit.
24:47To get there, yeah.
24:48But tonight, on the episode, there's a real hair-raising moment, isn't there?
24:53With Tiffany Haddish.
24:55Well, there's always a hair-raising.
24:57You know, it's just like, the wire's unpredictable.
24:59I mean, sometimes the guests are kind of preparing and going to some climbing classes,
25:03but everything's just loose.
25:06And I think tonight, I think, is Tiffany Haddish.
25:10And we're starting out on this little ledge.
25:12And once you get on this ledge, it's about that wide,
25:15and suddenly she realised it was 500 foot down.
25:17And her legs kind of went to jelly, and she then slipped.
25:21That's why I have a rope.
25:23Yeah.
25:23But you know what? That's part of it.
25:24It's kind of like life, isn't it?
25:26Life is unpredictable, and you're going to get hit by fear,
25:30and then you've got to find a way over it and together.
25:33And I like that.
25:33Did you pull her back off the ledge?
25:36Well, yeah.
25:36And then we had to go up, you know, together.
25:39Is she still with us?
25:40She's just about still with us.
25:42Yeah.
25:42She did great.
25:43She was amazing.
25:44And you have to do the show until a celebrity dies.
25:47Well, we don't even joke about that.
25:49We never get complacent.
25:51My job...
25:52And we always say, come on your own.
25:54Leave the entourage.
25:55Trust us.
25:56You're going to love it.
25:57Like I say, your eyes will be on fire at the end.
26:00But there's a little bit of kind of grit to go through first.
26:04But they always come on their own.
26:06We say, we'll keep you alive.
26:07Might be a few rips and scars and bruises, but you're going to be...
26:11You'll be all right.
26:11You're going to be good.
26:12Yeah.
26:12Gosh.
26:13It's so fantastic.
26:15Well, you can watch Bear Grylls is running wild tonight.
26:18Nine o'clock on Sky and now.
26:21Yeah.
26:21Well, that's it for tonight.
26:22Thank you so much to all our guests for joining us.
26:25Have we got a quick message?
26:25A really quick one.
26:27Yeah.
26:27Just from Emily wants to say, for Bob, I want to say thank you, Bob, for always brightening
26:32my day when I need it most.
26:34Whenever I feel down, I always watch something comedic of yours to cheer me up and it makes
26:38me feel better.
26:39We do love you, Bob.
26:40That's wonderful.
26:41Thanks, Bob.
26:41Tomorrow.
26:42Alex Scott and Vernon will be here talking to Matt Lucas and Samantha Barks about their return
26:46to Les Mis.
26:47Plus, we'll be joined by Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and Nicky, of course, is here with
26:51Watchdog.
26:51Have a great evening.
