The Junkies Hit the Skins to look at yesterday in Commanders OTAs!
Transcript
00:00So, going through the paces, you got to see Jaden Daniels.
00:03You got to see Terry McLaurin.
00:04You got to see Sonny Stiles and company.
00:06They're all out there.
00:07They're all out there for the OTAs.
00:10Well, McLaurin and Tunsell, big names that showed up that, of course,
00:16weren't there last year.
00:16Yeah, Tunsell usually makes a habit of sitting out some of these early OTAs.
00:21I mean, they knew that before they acquired him.
00:23Doesn't seem that critical for an alignment.
00:25Maybe it is.
00:27So, good to see him.
00:28Good to see that buy-in that he's there.
00:30So, of course, Jaden Daniels is front and center.
00:33We have audio of Jaden from yesterday.
00:37This first clip is him talking about how comfortable he is under center
00:42in David Blau's new offense.
00:44I know this is not the first time you've been in the center, right?
00:47But is there more emphasis working on the forward and all that this offseason
00:52than it depends?
00:54No, I mean, I always did that.
00:56You've got to be versatile in whatever you can, and I had to be well-rounded.
01:01So, ever since I got in the NFL, it's kind of just been the thing.
01:03So, it's not anything super new to me.
01:07I mean, it might not be new to him, but I honestly can't remember him taking snaps
01:13under center in Cliff's offense.
01:15I'm sure he's done it at times.
01:17It's happened.
01:18I'm sure it's happened, but seeing it's going to be on a regular basis is going to be weird.
01:23It's going to take some getting used to.
01:25Remember, we were having this discussion last year about should he be under center more?
01:29And I remember a critical third down.
01:32He was under center.
01:32He did a rollout at a first-down pass, I think, to John Bates, if I'm not mistaken.
01:40But it just wasn't prevalent in the offense.
01:42No, you never saw it.
01:43We're like overanalyzing it, though.
01:45I mean, these guys are quarterbacks.
01:46They've been doing it their whole lives, even though he's largely been a shotgun guy.
01:50Somebody did make the point, though, as you kind of break it down, I never thought of it,
01:54but that when you're under center and you turn your back just for a second, you know,
02:01as you're dropping back, you do lose side of the defense.
02:04Oh, yeah.
02:04And then you've got to get your eyes back locked on.
02:06So there is an adjustment there.
02:08But on the flip side, the defense, you know, it's trickery with the ball.
02:13For sure.
02:13Because you could do the little play action.
02:16It's potentially, you know, advantageous for the offense, too.
02:19No doubt.
02:19Just play action.
02:20You can do a lot of different things.
02:21Even if you're freezing those linebackers for a split second, maybe get a guy open.
02:26I don't think there's any doubt about it.
02:27But it is interesting that those are the little nuances that, as you're just an average fan,
02:31you don't really think about.
02:34I'd kind of equate it to, like, you guys hosting afternoons.
02:37You know how to do a radio show.
02:39We all know how to do a radio show.
02:41But maybe it's just a little different.
02:43Different rhythm.
02:44A part.
02:44Different rhythm.
02:45Different news stories are breaking as the show's going on.
02:49We'd be so well-rested if we hosted in the afternoons.
02:52It's kind of like that, where, you know, you do a couple shows, you get your sea legs under you.
02:58Yeah, I think it'll be pretty seamless.
02:59I think he'll be pretty seamless at it.
03:02He's such an athletic freak.
03:03He doesn't seem phased by it whatsoever.
03:05Yeah.
03:06I'm amazed, and maybe this is one of your clips, I'm not sure, but just sort of how, you know,
03:12I saw a bunch of these guys on other videos, and they just talked about sort of the command of
03:18the offense already.
03:19Kind of already got it.
03:20It's a brand new offense, and everybody's just like, he's been running it forever.
03:23Yeah.
03:23We said he's been working with Blau for three months.
03:25Yeah, for sure.
03:26Yeah.
03:27Yeah.
03:27Doesn't happen overnight.
03:28He's drilling down on it.
03:30Yeah.
03:30So it's second nature by the time the season, by, you know, by the time preseason rolls around, it should
03:36be.
03:37Well, it needs to be.
03:38I think it's the best move long term, and we saw a team successfully do this last year.
03:45Caleb Williams was in a very similar position to Jaden Daniels in terms of being a quarterback who had been
03:51in shotgun essentially his whole career.
03:54All of college, probably all of high school, almost never under center.
04:00And Ben Johnson takes over there in Chicago, forced them to go under center, and the offense benefited.
04:08Yeah, I think it'll be good.
04:10It's going to be really interesting.
04:11I'm excited to see it.
04:12I am, too.
04:13And I was interested to see when Scott Abraham, he was out there, you know, asking questions to these guys,
04:19and then they threw up an ABC7 Sports poll of fans, what they thought of this year.
04:26And it was roughly, you know, 25% thought division winner, 25% thought going to the playoffs, very small
04:39percentage thought Super Bowl winner.
04:42But then the overwhelming number was, it's going to be a poop show.
04:46Oh, really?
04:47It's like 50% of the people polled.
04:50Vibes aren't good.
04:51And I didn't understand that.
04:53It's just coming off of disappointing last year.
04:55I mean, coming off that year, I understand you've got two young new coordinators, and you've got a bunch of
04:58new guys.
04:59I think the schedule's very, very tough.
05:00The schedule's difficult, but I just thought that with all of that, especially with all the new guys that they
05:04signed,
05:05and Sonny Stiles that they drafted, I thought that fans would be jacked.
05:09Well, relating to that, let's play the second clip from Jaden.
05:12This is referring to how last season left a bitter taste in his mouth.
05:23I would say, I mean, I was just, it left a bitter taste in my mouth.
05:35From last year, and just how everything played out.
05:37So, you kind of just go on that off-season and just figure out ways to mentally get better physically
05:43and emotionally and everything.
05:44So, I would just go out there and just, you know, kind of just staying out the way and just
05:48focus on what I can focus on, control, what I can control.
05:52He always just says the politically correct thing.
05:54He says the right things.
05:56Yeah, he just says the right thing.
05:58Get me out of here.
05:59He's a well-trained media guy.
06:00Yeah, he handles it.
06:01Let me do real short answers and then stop the questions.
06:04Yeah, yeah.
06:04No, he's, no, but he's good.
06:07He's good, dude.
06:07And obviously, from whatever happened last year with all the injuries, he's got to be raring to go, man.
06:13He wants to prove himself again.
06:15And by the way, I hope people aren't falling for the obviously photoshopped picture of him on Twitter that's circulating
06:22that makes it look like he weighs about 130 pounds.
06:25No, I didn't see that.
06:26Okay.
06:26Another one of them.
06:27The caption said he weighed 140.
06:28Yeah, I mean, please.
06:30Let's not keep circulating that.
06:32Don't give that any oxygen.
06:33Was it fake, the pictures I saw of Anthony Richardson where he looked like he had gotten even more jacked?
06:38Was that fake, too?
06:39I have not seen those pictures of Anthony Richardson.
06:41Probably fake.
06:42But I know that the ones of Jaden are...
06:53Nothing's real.
06:57We can hear from Dan Quinn.
06:59We can hear what he's seeing from Jaden early in the process of OTAs.
07:04That's clip number two, Val.
07:05All positive.
07:07I always notice and admire him of just, like, the work ethic, the coming back to get it right.
07:13His mental quickness, John, is always something that just jumps out to me of, like, learning a system so quickly
07:18and fast.
07:20And so, I think I saw that a few years ago, and I'm feeling those same instincts now as you
07:25guys will see at practice, you know, more huddle.
07:28And it'll look differently.
07:29You'll see him under center more.
07:30But you see the same intent.
07:32You see the same communication.
07:34And I think it's the, like, the mental quickness that just...
07:38He makes things that are difficult look easy.
07:40And I know they're not.
07:41You know, with some play calls and how he goes about it.
07:44But that's one of the things I really respect.
07:46I think it's truly underappreciated how brilliant these guys are.
07:49I mean, it's just, you know, it's second nature to them.
07:51They've been doing it their whole lives.
07:52But it is...
07:53It's not easy.
07:56You know, memorizing the plays, memorizing a new playbook, knowing where everybody's got to be.
08:01It's gotten so hard.
08:01It's gotten so difficult.
08:02Yeah, but these guys just make it look easy.
08:04It's encouraging.
08:05I read Les Carpenter's take on it in the Washington Post.
08:09And by all accounts, Jaden looked good.
08:12Throwing deep balls.
08:13Balls over the middle.
08:14So, again, there's no defense.
08:17There's no pads.
08:18We expect nothing less.
08:19I mean, I did see him drop one into Antonio Williams.
08:23But it was...
08:24I mean, it was half speed.
08:25Like, there was a DB on Williams for, like, the first step or two.
08:29And then he just jogs past him.
08:33Goes out and catches the ball.
08:34It's just hard to...
08:35It's hard to glean a lot from some of the clips that you're seeing.
08:37But then there were clips of, like, Rashard White.
08:40Yeah.
08:40And catching balls out of the backfield.
08:41And he looked like he was moving.
08:42Yeah.
08:42I know that.
08:43He looked like he was moving.
08:44He's going to be...
08:45If he's out there, he's going to be good.
08:46If he's healthy and he's featured as much as I think he's going to be featured, he should
08:50catch 50 balls in this offense.
08:52I mean, that's what he was doing in Tampa.
08:54That's just his...
08:54That's his...
08:55He was catching balls in Tampa.
08:56I mean, nice to see that.
08:57And that dude's a bargain.
08:59I think they got him for, like, $2 million, $2.5 million.
09:02Yeah.
09:02Like, he can make up to $4 million.
09:04But they got him for a pittance.
09:06I mean, no money.
09:07They were interviewing Deami.
09:09He looked like he was thrilled to be back.
09:10Ah, Jason's thrilled that he's back.
09:12Yeah, that's my boy.
09:13That is this guy.
09:14Just because you saw the video out in L.A.?
09:16Just because that's my boy.
09:17Yeah.
09:18He looked like he was thrilled to be back and thrilled to be back catching balls from Jaden
09:22again.
09:22So...
09:23I don't know why you're not buying a Deami Brown, like, $8 Jags jersey on Fanatics.
09:29Like, they had a massive sale, I think, like, a week ago.
09:32What would you do with it?
09:33I'm going to...
09:33Yeah.
09:34He would wear it.
09:34He loves wearing wacky jerseys in here.
09:36I'm going to wait until I see Commander's Deami Brown jerseys, and that's what I'm going
09:40to wear.
09:41I guess you could do that.
09:42I'm not going to wear the Jags jersey.
09:43Okay.
09:43If you've been reading the Von Miller quotes, he's trying to...
09:46Von Miller wants to come back.
09:47Denver.
09:48Yeah.
09:48Well, he's just...
09:49He's a sack mercenary at this point.
09:51Yeah.
09:51Yeah.
09:52I don't even think he cares if he plays for an actual team.
09:54If he just could go out and get sacks somehow and add them to his collection, he would
10:00probably do it.
10:01He's hyping of all the young players.
10:02He wants to help mentor and talking about how great he is in the locker room, and I'm
10:05sure all that's true.
10:06It's just...
10:07It's wild.
10:08It's wild when something like that's out of your control at an age of like 36, 37.
10:12Yeah.
10:13All right, Valdez, play clip six from Quinn.
10:16This is Quinn talking about David Blau's playbook and what the offense could look like in year
10:21one.
10:21I'm going to guess he's not going to give too many details.
10:23I think the efficiency, David, is the number one thing, especially on the early downs.
10:27If there's a balance in the run-pass ratios, then we're hitting the marks probably at the
10:32right strides, and I would say the explosives will be up, knowing we can do that.
10:37And so that's the first part.
10:39I'm looking for one that has good balance.
10:40Like I say, it will always be 50-50.
10:42But if you can find that and attack in that way, that's what success would look like to
10:47me early on.
10:49I like that he mentions explosives.
10:51That gets me a little horned up.
10:55How good was he when he called into our show on Friday?
10:58He was so awesome.
10:59He was awesome.
10:59I was so convinced it was Durante Jones.
11:01You said Durante.
11:02I was so convinced that's who the mystery caller was.
11:05No.
11:06And it wasn't...
11:07I guess I was close.
11:08I mean, he's a member of the coaching staff.
11:11They're in the mix.
11:12But he was just so cool.
11:13When you were doing the yes-no questions, he was saying, hell no.
11:16Hell yes.
11:18He was awesome.
11:19Gets fired up.
11:21Sanistro...
11:22I mean, all the players at some point seemed like they were answering questions.
11:25But I think it was Sanistro they asked about what's the challenge of facing a David Blau
11:29offense.
11:30I thought it was kind of interesting.
11:31He said, just keep track of all the motion.
11:34Like, just making sure everybody knows where they're supposed to be with all the guys pre-snap.
11:39Essentially, I paraphrasing.
11:41But that's something to look forward to.
11:43We do have some audio from Javon Kinlaw.
11:46I'm not sure...
11:47We can play it?
11:47I'm not sure if Scott Abraham asked this question or not.
11:50I know that he did ask the question.
11:52He was part of the media scrum out there yesterday.
11:55Here's Javon Kinlaw in what I'm guessing is a pretty heavily redacted clip.
11:59What do you think about the new pieces they added defensively?
12:03You know, on the D-line, O-Way, several guys.
12:05Yeah, we got some motherfuckers now.
12:09Excuse my language, but yeah, O-Way, he can go.
12:12Charles Aminiu can go.
12:13K-Levon can go.
12:15Tim Settle, he can go.
12:17Who else am I missing?
12:18Then we got Steve Wise back.
12:19You already know he can go.
12:20We got D.A. coming back.
12:22He can go.
12:23Jerzon can go.
12:24I mean, D. Payne can go.
12:26You know, it's going to be exciting, bro.
12:28It's going to be super exciting to play with these guys for sure.
12:32A lot of talent, bro.
12:34I'm just excited, bro.
12:35I'm super excited.
12:37Standig.
12:38Love's cursing.
12:39Standig talked about Kinlaw.
12:42I don't know if it was Danny or somebody pointed out yesterday that, you know,
12:45on the whole, I think Kinlaw was somewhat underwhelming considering kind of the expectations.
12:52But now with all this extra talent around him, this should really free him up, right?
12:57With Sonny Stiles, with Chennault, with all these guys.
13:00You know, that really should free him up.
13:02I expect him to have a much more impactful season, at least to, you know, to those of
13:09us just watching on a couch.
13:10I think we're going to notice Javon Kinlaw more this year.
13:13I saw Linnell Willingham, who was out at the OTAs, who obviously works here at 106.7
13:18The Fan.
13:18He said that his body, like Kinlaw's body jumped out of him.
13:22Oh, he's massive.
13:23Oh, he's such a huge human being.
13:24I think he spent, like, he might have slimmed down.
13:26Like, he looks like he's just walked in.
13:30Ready to go.
13:31Yeah.
13:31Yeah, that's a good point with all the guys they brought in.
13:33All the guys they brought in, it could free him up.
13:35You don't have to, maybe he won't face as many doubles.
13:37Yeah.
13:38And just really be able to use that physicality and have an impact.
13:41Run and need it.
13:42Yeah, and we're not even talking about Payne, really.
13:45I mean, does Payne bounce back?
13:46I know, he was like an afterthought.
13:47All the guys he mentioned, Payne was like second to last.
13:49Right, right.
13:50All those guys.
13:52I mean, does Payne have a big year?
13:53He's playing for another big contract.
13:56He's entering a lame duck year where he doesn't have, you know, money on his deal after this
14:01year.
14:02Yeah.
14:02Team chose not to extend him.
14:04Yeah.
14:05They're hoping he plays like he did when he got his last contract.
14:08You think the defense is going to be the strength of the team as opposed to the offense, which
14:14has been the strength?
14:15I don't know.
14:16That might be a bridge too far.
14:18Maybe.
14:19I think they'll be improved.
14:21But it won't be the strength.
14:22A strength?
14:23Oh, I'm not ready to commit to it being a strength.
14:26I mean, they just added so many pieces.
14:28If it's a strength, then that means it has to be like a top 15-ish type unit.
14:32Yeah, top 17.
14:33And the offense is below in the bottom 15 or something.
14:36Yeah.
14:36Well, I mean, the offense wasn't good last year for a ton of reasons, but I don't know.
14:40Maybe with all the new DC, with all the guys they added, with Sonny.
14:45My expectations are much higher.
14:48Much higher.
14:49I can't wait, Cakes, to get some turnovers.
14:52I can't wait to actually, in a league where they never punt anymore, force a few punts.
14:56Speaking of special teams, there's a kicker battle.
14:59Yeah.
15:01The undrafted rookie, Drew Stevens and Jake Moody.
15:05Stevens bombing them, apparently.
15:07Bombing them.
15:08Supposedly, the coaches and Peters, they were watching intently.
15:11I'm not sure who reported that.
15:14People are calling his leg a weapon.
15:16Really?
15:17Stevens was 6-for-6.
15:18Good to have that.
15:18Moody missed a 53-yarder.
15:20Yeah.
15:21Okay.
15:22Or actually, he hit a 53-yarder, but he missed one.
15:24Yeah.
15:25It'd be nice if they could keep them both somehow.
15:26Stevens was 6-for-6.
15:28What was Stevens long?
15:29Did they say it was...
15:30It doesn't say it in this article that I was reading.
15:31Is there any chance the commanders use just one kicker for an entire season?
15:38No.
15:38I would doubt it.
15:39I can't remember the last time that's happened.
15:41Very unlikely.
15:42Yes, there's a chance.
15:43There is, but it's unlikely.
15:44Of course, there's a chance, but I would doubt it.
15:46It's unlikely.
15:47They churn through kickers.
15:48Big time.
15:49I would think Moody would have the head start on the job and then wait until he bombs and
15:56then you bring in the rook.
15:58But I don't know.
15:59I mean, Moody's got to be number one on the depth chart.
16:01I think for now.
16:02Yeah.
16:03But if Drew Stevens is balling...
16:05If Stevens just bombs 60-yarders with regularity.
16:07I mean, it's going to be tough for Moody to keep his gig.
16:12I'm just ready for a churn and burn in two or three different kickers already in 2026.
16:17I'm going to say less than three.
16:20I'm going to hope it's a little more solidified than that.
16:22I hope.
16:24I think with Moody, it was just all confidence with him.
16:28I mean, he was a baller in college.
16:31He was a high draft pick by the Niners.
16:33Was he a third-round pick?
16:34Yeah.
16:34I mean, he was just a baller.
16:35That's a lot of draft capital to burn on a kicker.
16:37Yeah.
16:38And then he gets...
16:39You have to be able to stand on the table and really convince everybody in the room
16:42that this is the guy that's going to be kicking for us for the next decade.
16:47I'm looking at...
16:48There's really only like...
16:50Man, there's only like two or three indoor games.
16:53Unless I'm missing something.
16:54For the commanders?
16:55Yeah.
16:56Like, you got to be able to get it done outdoors.
16:58Sure.
