John Keim joined The Junkies as minicamp is underway to look at what we've seen from the Commanders in OTAs so far!
Transcript
00:00what up guys assuming everything's upbeat at OTAs always is and you know there's there's
00:08there's a more I'm gonna say there's a more positive energy than last year but it really
00:14wasn't like last year was bad in that regard it just said always felt like something someone was
00:20missing without Terry out there I think it makes a difference but I also think when you bring in
00:25you have multiple new coaches new staff a new coordinators new office new d new you know a lot
00:32more young players coming in I think that brings a different kind of energy as well so I you know
00:38it's everything there have been very few times where you walk away amazing like oh this team is
00:44just you know it doesn't have it or whatever you know what I mean like in terms of like the
00:49vibe
00:49or whatever like it's always good at this time of the year but I do think it's been pretty good
00:53with
00:53this group for sure are you feeling more of a sense of urgency at this point coming off the
00:58five win season last year or is that more for training camp OTAs are a little more chill
01:04um I don't I wouldn't describe it as chill I would say I felt the urgency all off season
01:08so I think from the time they from the time and the reasoning behind some of the coaching moves I
01:14think you felt the urgency there I think they were clearly aggressive and free agency um I think you
01:21felt the urgency there not just the urgency because you're coming off five and twelve but because like
01:24you know you need to do more to get to where you want to be and to stay not just
01:29get there but to
01:29stay there um you know and I think even like yesterday I think there's a one thing with Dan
01:36Quinn is he'll there you know there's always that standard of the way you want to practice and the
01:42energy you want them to practice with and that was kind of a message he kind of honed in on
01:47yesterday
01:48and kind of got them back into a huddle after they broke because he didn't feel the energy was there
01:52so like I think you you know there is I think there's that sense of urgency to to implement and
01:58remind of I guess quote the standard um but also like yeah I mean there's a natural urgency for those
02:06who were here last year especially coming off a very bad year and it was five and twelve but at
02:12times it felt a lot worse yeah right and we all like we can't forget that like it was really
02:18bad
02:18there was that stretcher it was just horrendous right so you can't forget that and so you know
02:24and I think you see it like for a guy like Jaden Daniels um you know who did not who
02:29only finished
02:30four games I think you're going to feel it there from him but not just in OTAs but in the
02:34work he does
02:35um throughout the off season um for sure so give us a guy who was motivated already yeah he's pretty
02:44driven guy by the way I would love to get my hands on the gopro footage to see what he's
02:48seeing that
02:49that's got to be incredible I'm sure it never will but you know you know you know what's funny about
02:54that too what with some of those guys talk about more with that is how it helps in the huddle
02:59more
02:59than it does anything else how so like it um they hear themselves communicate and how clearly are
03:06you communicating okay like that is probably to be honest I think for some of them I think that
03:11may be the bigger deal than actually the vision because you know especially you played quarterback
03:15for a while you kind of know what you're looking at and you can see but it's how you're you
03:19know
03:19you're if you're doing more huddling which they will um I talked to David Blau about that like
03:25they were no huddle more than way more than anybody a ton more than anybody last year yeah
03:30and he said if they did it was like 80 or 70 percent something like that he said if they
03:33did
03:34it 20 percent of the time this year no huddle that would be a lot so like it's important to
03:38hear how
03:39you communicate in the huddle can you give us I know it's difficult because they're not necessarily
03:43going 100 percent and the you know there's not really hitting that sort of thing but can you give
03:48us one or two guys on offense that have kind of jumped out at you at any position and then
03:53maybe
03:54one or two guys on defense um I think two guys that you know chig okonkwo jumps out because you
04:02see and feel the speed yeah um for sure um
04:09I mean I think like it's really hard because you're not you know the offensive lineman you're
04:14not going to be watching them because there's not much not much you know the same with the d-line
04:19and
04:19all that um I think what you feel you do like Rashad White to me has looked pretty good in
04:24the
04:24spring catching the ball the backfield yeah that's what he has done in his career right so like
04:28you know I think he's done a nice job um I've heard Van Jefferson is raising my eyebrows with some
04:34people no yeah yeah yeah yeah I mean yes yeah yeah and I think like the other thing too when
04:41you were
04:41when you this is like when you have some veterans there like they should look pretty good I think when
04:47they don't is when you're worried right and um I think we saw that last year with like guys like
04:52KJ Osborne and all that where like they did not look very good and so you kind of knew like
04:59it's not
05:00good right so but yeah I think you know Van Jefferson is not I mean he's been he's had productive
05:06years in
05:07the NFL um so yeah I mean I think it just depends like and it depends on the day I
05:12mean some days
05:12Deami Brown looks pretty good right and we've seen that before but I think I think Steer he feels at
05:19home um I think I think the way they want to use him maybe is more conducive to have to
05:27maximizing
05:28him than than certainly last year and I don't know what happened all there in Jacksonville but like it
05:33wasn't wasn't good for him and I think we know kind of who he is as a player but um
05:38there are things
05:39he offers that can help them um so I think you know like yeah and then on defense
05:48it's just it's hard to say like I think you like you feel Sonny Stiles's speed yeah you can see
05:54that
05:54in the clips you guys are putting out there yeah yeah and that's that jumps out to me um it's
05:59hard
06:00otherwise you're like with the corners you know there there are definitely times where like you know
06:05I mean you feel like Amik Robertson's competitiveness you know now what what that means
06:11for down the road I don't know but you can also watch the film and you can see it clear
06:16as day as
06:17well like when he would go up against you know Justin Jefferson George Pickens um Devante Smith like
06:23you saw a guy who doesn't back down now he's going to lose some for sure but that's what you
06:28feel
06:29right and so like those are the things that kind of jump out and um I think the other thing
06:34that
06:34because what I always like to look for too with this is you know our guy do guys look hesitant
06:39um are they playing are they running going fast and it seems like they are and they're definitely
06:45mistakes and they'll get pointed out um so but those those are some of the things I don't know if
06:50that necessarily answers your question sure sure but but those jump up JK and this is a probably a
06:56guess but you talk to people out there all right you know you know people out there and we've been
07:01doing Brandon Iuke segments the last you know seems like the last three weeks because he's putting
07:06out new videos every day but I appreciate you waiting five minutes before bringing his name up
07:10I'm sorry but I got to uh how do you think how do you think this thing is going to
07:14play out
07:15what's the end game with Brendan Brandon Iuke and the commanders in your opinion
07:20I think he gets cut eventually and he ends up here so you think he will sign there okay
07:26that's that's and that's listen man we know that they've been interested we know they're not going
07:31to trade for him that's been true that hasn't changed at all right so um but you know and I
07:39think
07:39he clearly wants to play here and they have a desire to at least bolster that room right and I
07:50think
07:50they believe that they could go out and like you can go play and have a good offense with what
07:55they
07:55have yeah however you always want more and better if you can find it and so here that's a guy
08:01but I
08:01think I don't know when he gets cut I mean it's conceivable the Niners could play this game all season
08:07right just keep them on there at some point it's just like okay you know the points are made and
08:13just
08:13I would think they'd want to just like let's get out of the IU business but that may not come
08:17until after final cuts right when you know when they have to make a decision they could keep on
08:22there so that's when that's when I if I had to guess right now the way the Niners are playing
08:26it
08:26out like there's no reason like he's not a distraction to them in training camp he's not
08:31there right and you know they don't you know so it's not going to be asked every day but if
08:35Peters doesn't know that he's going to be cut at any particular date why not go after uh Stefan Diggs
08:41and just forget about IUK why IUK over Diggs that's a good question that's it well I think part of
08:47it
08:47I that's a good question because here's the other part of that that equation there's a couple
08:51things one um Diggs has been productive right I mean he's you know and he was good last year and
08:57yeah I would say this like there are people in New England who feel like he was one of the
09:01more
09:01instrumental leaders on that roster last year so you know I think he has this reputation that I'm not
09:08sure always matches what what I've heard from other teams and this is like not just from people
09:13there it's like from people who cover the team or so under the league and who have coached him
09:17that you know maybe the longer he stays maybe like in Buffalo it clearly there was something at the end
09:23I don't know whose fault it was but in New England um he was considered a strong team leader there
09:29and in very good in that room so it's you know you have all that he also would be more
09:35expensive
09:36and so how that factors into this it probably does I mean money usually does I think for IUK
09:41you can once he's cut you can get him especially because he wants to come here you can get him
09:46fairly cheap um for Diggs I think he would have more competition for him for his services and
09:52therefore it would be a little bit more expensive it would definitely be more expensive um how much
09:57more I don't know but I think that would I think that probably is in there um I think if
10:02you're also
10:03looking this is stretching it out if you're Washington and if you want immediate help Diggs provides
10:10immediate help but if you want a guy that like okay long term who might be here in a couple
10:17years
10:17will be IUK if he comes in here and plays you know handles things the right way and etc um
10:24you have a
10:25guy in your roster who is highly talented who is still you know near in in that prime right so
10:31like
10:32that I don't know how much that factors into it for them um but um you know that's that's another
10:38way
10:38to look at but Diggs has been productive like I mean he I I don't disagree with that theory
10:43here's a question I have for you give it give us some context you've been covering this team about
10:47as long as we've been doing this right John but 30 years I don't know how many right so John's
10:51been
10:51doing this a long time he's you've seen them all all the different characters these guys aren't all
10:56Bobby Wagner they're not all Jaden Daniels right there's a wide range of characters um where do you
11:03when you see and I know this is not your specialty right you're an ex is like you're you're you
11:07know
11:08straight guy but when you see videos like this from IUK does this because for some of us who
11:14aren't there every day we don't see the characters that come in and out of that building we go wow
11:18this is a real weird guy when you see this does this look like in the range of hey you
11:23know what
11:23you have guys like this it's not that abnormal to see a video where they're kind of talking this way
11:29doesn't look like a guy that has CTE to me this just looks like you know a different guy but
11:33we've
11:34seen plenty of guys like this in the league like I'm trying just could you put his personality from
11:38what you could gather from afar in context I don't know if I could well part of it too is
11:45like social
11:45media is becoming a bigger deal now right yeah um but you still don't see this very often and you
11:51don't see it from um you know you know like Terry McLaurin waged his quote-unquote um his campaign
11:58last year it was not great it didn't come across as crazy it may come across like okay you're now
12:05you're just you're pushing for this to get them to get to the table right it was more it felt
12:10strategic right this one doesn't this one doesn't feel that way and I think you know so I don't I
12:17wouldn't call it commonplace I just I wouldn't is it out of the ordinary to the point where it's like
12:23red flag territory for teams in your opinion I well I would say this too I think if you had
12:31red
12:31flags before I don't know that this is certainly is going to cement that your opinion of of him
12:37um this is also a very talent-based league and um the one the one advantage here is that
12:45Adam Peters was in San Francisco with him and knows him very well and then Jaden obviously is
12:51very good friends with him and knows him very well so that's an advantage they have like okay he
12:57could say like yeah I know it looks crazy now but um however it just it's not commonplace like to
13:02do
13:02this it's not commonplace to do you know to have a situation like this and I don't know all of
13:08who's
13:09at fault or whatever I know that he had those voids guaranteed that's unusual right um and so I think
13:17the whole situation is unusual so I wouldn't put it in this like you know I don't I can't look
13:23at
13:23you know there are a lot of guys that say like yeah they might go on social media and say
13:27like hey I
13:28just want to get out of here I want to go somewhere to do whatever but it feels like this
13:32goes beyond
13:33that um so you know and that's where I'd be if I'm Washington okay who's to say he doesn't turn
13:41on
13:41you at some point that's the thing I always wonder but I think yeah so like you'd have to like
13:46I don't
13:46know how you don't consider that it's you know you still think that ultimately ends up here you've
13:52said that right but that yeah yeah yeah and and that's like you know I I felt better about saying
13:58that
13:59a few several weeks ago right um I still think that's probably the case because here's the other
14:04part of that equation um you can get them for a very good price and it's you know small one
14:09year
14:10deal um and um and he'll be on his best behavior this year and maybe this is just where he
14:18wants
14:19to be and like maybe that makes a difference and you get a chance to study him all year now
14:24even on
14:25your best behavior if there's something off of the guy eventually it pops eventually you're going to
14:29see cracks in that foundation you know you know what I mean so I think you get a good read
14:34on it and
14:34that's where you can assess what you want to do what you want to give them but I also would
14:38I also think you can maybe structure a contract in a way where it's like you can still get out
14:44of it
14:45and without much penalty if if it rear if it turns a different way as well so yeah you know
14:51but that
14:51they get the one year to see like okay what's going on here and again like I can say best
14:56behavior but
14:56if you're if you are if you're if you're a certain way let's say like eventually I think that comes
15:03to
15:03the to the to the four right and so I think that's you know it gives them a chance to
15:08at least study
15:08and know hey john I know it's early for this but who's leading in the kicker competition between
15:14jake moody and drew stevens mark mosley
15:20um I don't know that there's a I wouldn't no no it's I mean it's funny because they seem when
15:27you're
15:27watching them kick like there's their numbers I'm going to speak generally because they we've only
15:35seen a couple practices but they're about the same right when when from when we've been out there
15:41um I think in that case like it's hard to trust an undrafted free agent because it's just it's hard
15:49to um it's every kicker has got to go through this transition period when you go from college
15:55nfl and jake moody has done it and is you know he had a good year last year number wise
16:00so
16:00has he kind of reached that point you know like I think you can ask that right um I mean
16:06he was a
16:06higher draft picker so it's a hard thing to do and you know stevens was inconsistent under 50 um that's
16:14something you have to watch for as well so I think we'll see I don't know that I could say
16:20anybody's
16:20ahead per se based on what we've seen um but if if it's even then I think you're gonna you
16:26know then
16:26you know what you have in jake moody but I'll be curious to see how this thing develops in training
16:32camp and you know shoot we've seen it before where you have guys competing in the spring and neither
16:38one of them is here come the fall I don't know if we're at I don't know I can't go
16:42to that point yet
16:43but I don't know I'm I don't know that I'm sold that this that either one would be there because
16:50I think they both have to prove still what they can do and moody again moody at he was 18
16:55for 20
16:55last year I think it was combined um that's pretty good and you know so if you can get that
17:00and if you
17:01can be a little bit more consistent beyond 50 then that would be then that's a huge huge bump yeah
17:07then
17:08it's like okay well then you got your guy and that's a good thing for them because as we know
17:12they've been searching for that guy for a few years appreciate the time as always john's john
17:18kime from espn.com thank you buddy thanks god yep thanks guys so there you go despite all the
17:25antics all the videos all the nonsense even though it makes you raise your eyebrows he still thinks
17:32ultimately they're gonna sign him he does yep one of those videos he might be wearing a commander's
17:36hat in one of those videos yeah oh yeah I mean it's he definitely he's all in on the
17:41command he's all in for sure what if jaden sent it to him
17:45we don't know all right gotta take a break you want to chime in 1-800-636-1067 we're the
17:52junkies be right back
