00:00Hello friends, welcome to today's explainer.
00:04Our topic today is not only very interesting but also very practical.
00:096th April 2026, this is the date when GST Network rolled out such an update,
00:16For which tax professionals and businesses have been waiting for literally years.
00:21We are talking about the facility to manually edit the pre-deposit amount in GST appeal filings.
00:28In.
00:28In this discussion, we will look at exactly how this new feature works, why it was needed, and
00:35Most importantly, how is it going to make your compliance process easier?
00:39So let's get started without any delay.
00:42In today's explainer, we will focus on these 6 main points.
00:46First, we will understand the basics of the GST pre-deposit rule, then we will look at the old auto calculation problem which
00:53Everyone was fed up, after that we came up with a new editable field solution, some real life practical scenarios,
00:59Its main beneficiaries and finally, we will cover some very critical rules and warnings so that no one can tell you anything.
01:06Don't make a mistake.
01:07So the first section is the GST pre-deposit rule, let's start from the very basic, imagine a GST officer
01:14has passed a demand order against you and you do not agree with it at all, what will you do now?
01:19It will be simple, you will file appeal by filling form GST APL-01, but here is the twist, under section CGST Act
01:27According to Article 107, subsection 6,
01:30First you have to deposit a certain amount, we call it pre-deposit, it is a non-negotiable
01:36It's a gateway, meaning if there's no pre-deposit then there's no appeal. It's like an entry ticket. Okay, so let's dig into it a little.
01:42Let's take a deep dive into how much this amount actually is. See, on a typical period of any demand order, there are two
01:48are the first admitted tax, that is, they
01:52The tax which you accept, that yes, it is my mistake and I have to pay it, you have to pay its full 100%.
01:57% means 100% has to be paid, the second part is the disputed tax, on which the whole issue is, the appeal
02:04To get into the scheme, you need to deposit only 10% of the disputed amount, i.e., the disputed tax, as a pre-deposit.
02:21Sounds easy and straightforward, but the old GST portal system had a major flaw, the system generated so many rejections.
02:28It was that as soon as you selected form GST APL01, the portal automatically calculated exactly 10% of the disputed amount.
02:36He used to fix it there, and the biggest problem was
02:51Check if you have already made a payment, the portal did not recognize it, or it never happened.
02:56Sometimes the demand was shown under some wrong tax head, sometimes a small amount was already adjusted.
03:01had already been done, or multiple pending orders were yet to be cleared, in all these situations because those 10
03:07% was box locked,
03:09It was forced to make unnecessary extra payments, meaning paying the same tax twice. This is not possible for any business.
03:15You and I can well understand how big a blow this is to the working capital of the country, and this is
03:21This is the entry for our third section, and the hero of today's explainer, the editable field solution.
03:29The pain caused by automatic calculation, taxpayers are unaware
03:32The solution to the problems that were being faced was urgently needed, and finally, on 6 April 2026, GST Network launched a new portal.
03:40Launched update, now the pre-deposit percentage and its value fields can actually be edited manually, yes
03:47Yes, now the software does not impose any fixed amount on you, instead you have to type your correct and eligible amount.
03:54It gives complete freedom, and it is very wonderful.
04:02The earlier system was set in stone, 10% fixed, no manual entry and tension of double payment.
04:09Different, but now the new system is totally flexible, you can make manual corrections, adjust the payments made earlier
04:16You can do it, and you can enter only that amount which is genuinely earned, this is a massive relief, come on,
04:23Now let's step back and look at section 4, practical scenarios and adjustments.
04:29To understand this properly we will look at three different real world cases, the first case is quite straight forward,
04:35Suppose your GST demand is Rs 5 lakh, then as per the rules 10% pre deposit is Rs 50
04:40,000, the portal will auto populate Rs 50,000, as you have not made any previous payment here,
04:46So you just have to leave this auto populated amount as it is, and file your appeal comfortably.
04:51So, no changes here, let's go ahead and see how this applies further.
04:58In a slightly complicated situation, case number 2, suppose your total demand is Rs 10 lakh, 10% of it
05:06Pre-deposit is Rs 1 lakh
05:14What would have happened in the old system, the portal would have again asked you for the full amount of Rs 1 lakh, but now after this new update,
05:21You can type the remaining Rs 60,000 naturally in this editable field, just mention the proper details.
05:27Pay it and you are saved from double payment.
05:30And now comes the third case which is actually the most important, think about it, there is tax in your order.
05:372 lakh rupees, interest is 50,000 and penalty is 20,000, totaling 2,70,000, old
05:45What the portal did was, it considered this entire 2,70,000 as disputed and calculated 10% on it.
05:5127,000, whereas legally, pre-deposit is applicable only on the disputed tax portion.
06:00Now, with this flexibility, you can simply delete this wrong calculation and type your correct tax amount.
06:06Yes, your unnecessary money has been saved from getting blocked, now the question arises that who in our fifth section
06:13Who is going to benefit the most from this update, frankly, it will have the biggest impact on
06:20Poo
06:54Now we come to our last and most crucial section.
06:59Critical rules and warnings
07:01We have gained new freedom, but that does not mean we should become careless.
07:05Here is a very common and naturally occurring question.
07:09Does having an editable field mean that we can enter anything random or of our choice in the pre-deposit section?
07:15You can proceed further by typing the amount of
07:17So friends, the answer to this is very simple, absolutely not, no way.
07:21This feature is provided so that you can make only genuine and legitimate adjustments.
07:26This is not a loophole or shortcut to avoid pre-deposit.
07:31So be very clear that if this editable field is misused
07:36Or you have entered the wrong pre-deposit amount without basis.
07:39So its consequences are very strict.
07:41Your entire appeal may be marked defective there itself.
07:45The tax department can immediately issue additional payment demands to you.
07:48And in the most extreme case, your appeal may be rejected outright without giving the correct pre-deposit.
07:54So now you have no excuse for the portal's mistake.
07:57Precision in calculations matters now more than ever.
08:01Let's end this explainer with this powerful thought.
08:06The final verification will always be done by the appellate authority.
08:10Even though the portal has now given you the freedom to change numbers.
08:13But the final decision-making authority will remain with the authority.
08:17Attaching the correct documents and showing the correct calculations will keep your appeal safe.
08:22But this new update raises a very interesting question.
08:26Are our digital compliance systems becoming so mature and smart now?
08:31that it can genuinely rely on manual user input
08:34Or is it just the whole burden of accuracy?
08:37Let's start putting it back on the backs of us taxpayers.
08:40What do you think, please consider it
08:43Thank you so much for joining me in this explainer today.
