The story follows a family during their summer beach holidays — the kind of trips where everyone pretends everything is fine.

As a child, director Sabrina Moreno always wondered: “Why haven’t my parents separated yet if their relationship wasn’t working?” When she was 26, her mom asked her and her brothers for “permission” to divorce. She couldn’t believe her mom still needed their approval as adults.

An Ocean Blue is based on those real memories. It portrays the last moments when the family looked happy on the surface, but underneath there was tension, things left unsaid, and the slow breaking of a fantasy.

Told in a dream-like, non-linear style where reality and dream coexist, the film asks: “What is it that makes a family?” It shows how children feel when adults hide pain to protect them, and how hard it is to accept change even when you’re grown up.
