Walter left Angola 17 years ago during the civil war and settled in New York as a taxi driver, chasing a better life. He stayed behind while his wife Esther and baby daughter Sylvia fled to Tanzania. They kept in touch, but built separate lives.
Now Esther, now devoutly religious, and teenage Sylvia finally join Walter in Brooklyn. But reunion is awkward. They’re strangers sharing a one-bedroom apartment.
He regretfully ends things with his girlfriend Linda before his family arrives. He loves dance like his daughter, but hides secrets from his years alone.
Esther’s chapter: She struggles with a new country, culture, and a husband who feels distant. Her faith in church became her anchor during the separation.
Sylvia’s chapter A quiet, elegant teen who finds homesickness painful. She pursues dance against her mother’s wishes, using it to express herself and connect with her father.
Dance becomes their “muscle memory” to bridge cultural and generational divides. The film is both a universal immigrant story and an intimate look at how distance can turn loved ones into strangers.
