The GBAG Nation caught up with Rangers reliever Cal Quantrill, who has been lights-out lately. Quantrill touched on transitioning into a high-leverage bullpen role, the competitive vibe in the clubhouse despite a tough stretch, his family ties to the game, and more.

00:00it's time for the rangers player show brought to you by golden chick and globe life for over 125
00:05years globe life has helped protect families when they need it most globe life make tomorrow better
00:10okay here he is a rangers reliever just flat out getting it done eighth big league season 2016
00:16first round pick out of stanford rocking a 279 right now he is the son of paul it's cal
00:23quattro here with you on the fan and a good afternoon sir how the heck are you good how
00:27you doing doing wonderful you know looking forward to uh tonight's game um and man you've been on on a
00:34nice little run here haven't given up a run in three outings having having one of your best seasons
00:38since maybe your early days in cleveland and san diego looks like they're having a hard time squaring
00:43you up out there how's it going for you yeah it feels good feel like uh i'm fully healthy um
00:49a
00:49little bit different role this year but taking advantage of some opportunity and um playing some
00:54pretty good baseball it'd be nice if we could uh you know add some wins to the total too but
00:59uh
00:59you know personally i feel like i'm throwing the ball the way i can and hopefully keep getting out
01:03there okay i was i was wanting to ask you because you've been in in quite a few different clubhouses
01:10what's your read on the rangers clubhouse and and does it still feel confident with this losing streak
01:17yeah i mean you know one of the reasons we chose here in the offseason is because
01:20you know i believe this is a competitive team and i think this is a competitive clubhouse um
01:26i don't think anyone needs to be told that we're frustrated right now and we think that
01:31we can play better baseball um obviously we're you know we face some adversity with some injuries and
01:36stuff like that but that's kind of part of the game and i think we expect more uh more out
01:41of
01:41ourselves individually and as a team and you know i think we're looking to get back on track today and
01:46as we get going and in the end it's a long season you know i believe in this group of
01:50guys and our
01:51ability to kind of weather this storm here how much pride do you take in being one of the guys
01:56that can
01:56go out there and help stop the bleeding if it's getting away from you a little bit yeah uh it's
02:01part of the part of the role i've got right now it's um you know we may not always win
02:04the game i pitch
02:05but if it gives us a better shot to win the next couple games i'd say i did my job
02:08so um you know
02:10hopefully i think all of us it's uh we'd love to see our starters go out and go seven and
02:15make it
02:15easy but you know it doesn't always happen sometimes you gotta step up to the plate so
02:21um yeah it's been good so you've had a ton of success in the big leagues how's how's the role
02:26different for you when you go from the starter days to a high leverage relief situation
02:31you know in the end i think early in my career i would have told you it was a it's
02:36a big change now i
02:37think really uh starting is just relieving six times in a row so okay so you know it hasn't felt
02:44like
02:44a massive change uh some of the recovery stuff and things i'm doing between outings may have
02:48changed a little bit but in terms of on the field um you know you got to get three outs
02:53before they
02:53score a run and then do it as many times as you can so uh it hasn't been a huge
02:57adjustment and i'm
02:58happy to do it and you know provide some length out of the pen when we need it and some
03:02and then
03:03some one inning appearances i guess i've had here recently and that's just part of it okay you are
03:07one of the few that have been able to throw an immaculate inning which i think is freaking
03:11badass and you rarely ever see so what was that experience like that's pretty cool i think it was
03:18my year anniversary not too long ago um yeah it was wild i actually didn't really know i'd done it
03:24until uh the catcher was kind of looking at me like hey like that's pretty pretty cool huh and i
03:29was
03:29like oh wait a second that just happened uh takes a little bit of luck and it takes a team
03:36that's
03:37willing to swing and yeah it's pretty uh it's pretty awesome i i uh i think it was the first
03:43one last year i'm not sure we've had one this year but it seems like there's always one or two
03:47guys in
03:48every team but it's not going out cal did you know your father played all those seasons in major
03:53league baseball did is he one of those dads that kind of let you have your own path or was
03:58he kind
03:59of helping you along just encouraging how would you how would you describe how a guy who's a
04:05a quality major leaguer you know how did he give you the wisdom or did he just kind of let
04:09you be
04:10and let you find your own way i think we've always had a pretty good relationship when it comes to
04:14baseball i think he's there if i have questions but he's certainly not like an overbearing t-ball
04:20father i uh yeah i've definitely learned a lot from him and his experience but the game's changed a lot
04:27you know a lot since he played as well right so there's some things i've dealt with that he
04:32you know maybe didn't uh deal with when he played and and then there's still some stuff that's the
04:36same a lot of it's off the field stuff and off-season preparation and dealing with the travel
04:41preparing your body and all that stuff he's obviously a great resource but but now i think
04:46we have more of a camaraderie when it comes to the sport and talking about you know maybe last day's
04:50outing or the guys that face in the next day and what he thinks um he's still involved uh in
04:56baseball
04:56with the blue jays so he's kind of up to date on on where the sport is now and it's
05:02good it's a great
05:03relationship i think we've we've bonded over the sport but it certainly hasn't become like uh
05:07talk to him after every pitch kind of kind of relationship does he hit you with the back in
05:12my day we were actually pitching seven eight maybe even nine innings no he doesn't but mostly probably
05:18because he was reliever but he had his 90 appearances a year he was a rubber arm so if there's
05:22one part i could steal maybe it'd be the uh the lack of soreness he somehow was able to find
05:27cal quattro here with us on the fan do you think he would have still made it to the big
05:32leagues if
05:32you didn't have a big league dad uh i think so yeah i think so i think that's you know
05:37it's a bonus
05:38it helps there's some stuff you can learn but uh in the end you know this game is uh pretty
05:43cut
05:44throat uh and eight years in i'd say at this point it's pretty clear that i belong here yeah yeah
05:48you
05:49got what it takes now what's it like uh what's it like growing up in canada uh as a baseball
05:54guy
05:55yeah you know it's obviously it's not sport number one uh it's uh it's a little further down the list
06:01but but i i'm always i try to be careful we have a lot of talented canadian players in baseball
06:05right
06:05now it's actually kind of a boom for for just like quality of talent that's coming out of canada
06:11there's kids all over coming up through the systems and then there's some really talented players
06:14in the big leagues feels like we've run into actually a couple of them recently with
06:18mike soroka and josh naylor in our division and so um yeah i think it was interesting in the sense
06:25that maybe i didn't play maybe my high school baseball wasn't as competitive as some of these
06:30some of these boys from texas but um we traveled a lot and i played on the national team and
06:35by the
06:36time i was through college i was fairly exposed to the best that this uh this country has to offer
06:41so
06:42um you know i'd still play hockey if i could but i guess the fastball was seemed like a better
06:47better option so are you uh did you grow up a leafs fan still am it's painful especially watching
06:53the stars just go out and i know win it are you are you sick to your stomach watching mitch
06:58marner
06:58go on this run i love it i know i know mitch pretty well he's a great guy i they
07:03ran him out of the
07:03town and he's making a pay for it so good for him so what's your state of leafs hockey right
07:09now
07:09they've had a pretty active offseason this gm hire got everybody in a bit of a tiff yeah i um
07:16i think it was probably time for for a change uh you know got the first overall pick and
07:21hopefully we're in for some better years here i would hate to to watch the core four kind of
07:26to melt away here before they have a chance to take it all but um man that sport's in a
07:31great
07:31spot right now there's a lot of competitive teams do you pull for montreal to try and get a cup
07:35back to canada i would rather no cup in canada than montreal yeah i knew that i knew that was
07:40coming i knew that question was going to be asked it's been so long it's like i didn't know if
07:44we've
07:44just said you know what screw it anybody can win it there's no way in hell he was going to
07:47say that
07:49i'm not even going to pretend for a second i would rather everyone be sad but yeah canadian tears
07:55what's the world baseball classy experience like playing for your country oh it's awesome i've done
08:00it twice now i'd do it again if i get an opportunity um i think you gotta be careful you
08:04have to
08:04prepare your body it's it is early it can be dangerous but uh it's just it's one heck of a
08:10competition and the way that the guys are playing it now and the turnout we're getting it's um it
08:15really is the best of the best and ended up getting to go to corner quarterfinals this year and play
08:20usa in houston unfortunately i pitched the day before so i didn't get to pitch in that game but uh
08:25just a really really cool experience they're doing a great job with that tournament i think that the
08:30fans like it and uh you know it's not often to have national pride when it comes to our sport
08:36it's uh it's a really cool really cool experience um hopefully you know uh hopefully the olympics
08:42turns out to be great but this wbc has been fantastic cal quattro here with you on the fan is
08:47there is
08:47there a usa hockey fan in the clubhouse that you're you're talking with or trash talking with around
08:54some of these high profile matchups over the last year um throughout the league i've played on a
08:59couple teams now and it seems like any time that there's international competition my phone starts
09:03buzzing and unfortunately the last couple it hasn't been very many positive buzzes towards me but uh
09:11uh burger is uh played a little hockey growing up and he knows what he's talking about and there's
09:15a couple other guys in the clubhouse that were pretty locked in i don't know how well
09:20they knew the players or what was going on but they seem to be pretty excited that the usa
09:26team did it all so whatever i guess they can have their one they can have their win
09:31so you're the guy to go to in hockey yeah it sounds like you know it you know you know
09:35the
09:36rosters and the personnel like you're one of those super fans you think oh yeah i like that sport more
09:40than mine for sure
09:43cal quattro here we're wrapping up just a couple of minutes to go man i going through your bio i
09:48was just
09:49i was fascinated by the fact that your dad was a big league pitcher and he married the sister of
09:53a big league pitcher in in andy ashby how did all that come together um you know just kind of
09:59backstory
09:59on that if you got it uh yeah actually so well i married andy ashby's daughter is the connection so
10:05okay i'm better in the uh uh la dodgers kids room the the where they um when they were playing
10:13together in los angeles so okay certainly been a part of all of our lives
10:18um but it's it's great uh she's very supportive she's lived this life she understands what it takes
10:24and uh she's quite the athlete herself so um yeah it's good it's uh our family dinners there's
10:31you know everyone knows what they're talking about everybody nobody's trying to bs their way
10:37through a baseball conversation at that table that's outstanding no not getting away with that
10:41at our table okay that makes a lot more sense because i was going through the the the playing
10:45career of your dad and andy and i was like where did they how did this happen where did this
10:49whole
10:49thing come together but now that makes more sense when they were together with the dodgers you were
10:53like six years old yep and just kind of kept in contact and they were nice family and became
10:59friends with the family and then 15 years later or whatever it was there it goes cal quantrell rangers
11:06reliever thank you so much for joining us here on the fan and give them hell we'll be pulling for
11:10you
11:10all right all right i appreciate it guys
