Highway Thru Hell - Season 14 - Episode 05: Better Call Al
Transcript
00:05This time, on Highway Through Hell, a chain reaction...
00:10I can't believe the traffic.
00:12...puts Otto...
00:13Give it a shot!
00:14...to the test.
00:16Hey!
00:16Close, close!
00:18Woo, doggie!
00:20...quirings in the quagmire...
00:22We got James in there with his boots?
00:24...with an old friend...
00:25No, no, no!
00:26Hey!
00:26Boom!
00:29...and reliable...
00:30Oh, I love winter!
00:31...fighting the deep freeze.
00:37Holy crikey, that wind's cold out there.
00:41Flight's negative 17.
00:43Sub-zero temperatures...
00:46A little late in the air in there.
00:48...have hit B.C.'s Caribou region.
00:51Sure a lot of traffic.
00:52As the morning rush builds...
00:55...on Highway 97.
00:57Everybody coming to us, Tom.
01:03Two semis are blocking all lanes...
01:06...on the vital route to the north.
01:08Uh, it's not good.
01:11Both drivers...
01:12...remained unseen.
01:15So it's lots of...
01:16...I see up there, eh?
01:18Yeah, that's why it happened.
01:20Yeah.
01:21There's no way around them.
01:26Responding in a 50-ton auto record...
01:29...it's good all night long...
01:30...and then 6 o'clock in the morning, it freezes.
01:32...is owner-operator Rob Barber.
01:35The last couple days...
01:37...in our highways department...
01:39...they're going out and checking the roads...
01:40...and they're good...
01:41...and then 10 minutes later...
01:43...they just ice right over...
01:44...and become skating rinks.
01:45Sometimes weather nature...
01:47...will kind of trick everybody.
01:49Wreckers up there now.
01:51Arriving on scene...
01:52You can't believe the traffic.
01:54Rob is met...
01:55...by B.C. Highway Patrol Constable...
01:58...Lucas Dowsett.
02:00The highway isn't opening...
02:02...until...
02:02...until this is at least done.
02:05We're just trying to get the trucks out of the way...
02:06...to reopen the highway...
02:07...so we can get all these people...
02:09...going to work...
02:09...going to school...
02:10...whatever they need to do.
02:12The pressure is on...
02:13...to quickly clear the two wrecks...
02:16...holding up traffic.
02:18If we don't get it off the road...
02:20Stop!
02:21We can come around the corner...
02:22...you're gonna have another accident.
02:24the lights are covered...
02:25...into watch...
02:27Life's a Channel...
02:52...Northatch on...
02:54Just north of Quenelle.
02:56Yeah, there's two trucks crossing all lanes.
02:58An icy chain reaction.
03:01I'm just trying to get the road opened up.
03:03As Rob rushing to reopen Highway 97.
03:08The priority is to get the one truck out of the ditch and get a lane open
03:11so that the highways can start to put their salt or gravel on the road.
03:20Traveling northbound, a flat-deck D-train lost control,
03:25spun around, and landed in the ditch.
03:29Hot on its heels, a second semi.
03:33Trying to avoid the crash, jackknifed before coming to a stop across the highway.
03:41Okay.
03:42With the driver at the wheel.
03:46Rob winches the tractor out of the ditch.
03:50I think that'll be okay now.
03:52Then drags it onto the road.
03:55Yeah, I'm moving now.
03:57With the 50-ton.
03:59The quickest way is just to pull forward.
04:08With another wreck to clear.
04:11Sir, is it driving along?
04:13Rob hopes the trucker can drive away on his own.
04:18There's no real big damage done to the truck, which will save time and saves me some work.
04:25One rig on its way.
04:28Highways maintenance.
04:29They're going to sand it, salt it, and then the traffic roll.
04:32Can lay down some traction.
04:35She's open, we're rolling.
04:38Shee-haw!
04:40Traffic's released.
04:41There should be less chance of a secondary crash.
04:44Now Rob can turn his attention to the wreck in the ditch.
04:49Well, the front tires are hanging in the air, and it's sitting on its fuel tanks.
04:56But recovering the unit safely.
04:58If we just drag it backwards, that will guarantee we'll rip off.
05:01Will require a precision lift.
05:04It's not good for the environment.
05:06It's not good for us.
05:06I don't have a rotator to lift it up in the air and relieve that pressure.
05:13With hardly any damage.
05:15I just don't want to hurt the truck.
05:17Yeah.
05:18The rig should be able to drive away.
05:21They can miss their trip and lose their day's pay.
05:24So we don't want to hold them up any longer than necessary.
05:28But to get the tool he needs.
05:31How you doing?
05:32Hello, how are you?
05:33Rob calls for backup.
05:36You kind of got to think out of the box and use the equipment that's around you.
05:40We could be here 45 minutes.
05:43We're waiting.
05:58What's the weather like down here?
06:01600 kilometers south.
06:03Really pretty cold.
06:05In the Fraser Valley.
06:08Perfect weather for a hot tub.
06:11An 80,000 pound excavator.
06:18Is mired in mud.
06:2230 minutes out at the acquiring yard.
06:25Okay.
06:26Let's roll.
06:26A D-9 dozer readies for action.
06:31Okay, watch out.
06:33Head and mowed into the backwoods to do some old-fashioned fishing.
06:37Today, Al Quiring is joined by the next generation.
06:42Turn it this way.
06:44Turn it this way.
06:45Just a bit.
06:45His son, 31-year-old, Kerry Quiring.
06:50Working with family, you can't put a price on that.
06:55All right.
06:59Got it.
07:01That'll do.
07:02I'm glad I can hang out with him.
07:04That's what I live for.
07:05All right.
07:06Here we go.
07:08Copy that.
07:11My family's business is on its fourth generation operating right now.
07:16With my dad gone, I've been doing my best to pass that on.
07:21Kerry's slowly working into it and taking over.
07:25For today's job, Al is leaving the heavy wreckers at home.
07:31I'm going to steal mom's pickup and take one of the cats for a little joyride.
07:38Arriving outside a local farm.
07:42All righty.
07:46Al rolls out in the 110,000-pound dozer.
07:53I'm going through the bush.
07:55But to reach the wreck,
07:57I'm going to be knocking trees out.
08:00He needs to navigate the rugged terrain.
08:07You wouldn't get a wrecker in there.
08:09Not even close.
08:12Woo, doggie!
08:13We're just driving through the forest to potentially root up a Sasquatch somewhere.
08:21There's always a possibility, right?
08:26All righty.
08:28800 meters into the bush.
08:32Well, this is a big machine.
08:35Al gets his first look at the sunken excavator.
08:40It's a new machine.
08:41It's mired down, quite far down in the bog.
08:45It's not very far from taking a gulp full of water through the air intake system and killing itself off.
08:51This is the fun part.
08:52But they also find...
08:56James, look.
08:57A familiar face.
08:59It's funny to see you in the mud puddle and not chained up on the side of the Cocahalla Highway.
09:08Bam!
09:09Just like that.
09:09After more than a decade in heavy recovery...
09:14This road's not even that bad.
09:17James Luke...
09:18Sorry.
09:20...has moved on to other pursuits.
09:23Did I miss twine?
09:24Uh, yeah.
09:26I miss big wrecks.
09:29Today...
09:29What's going on here?
09:30Why are we here?
09:32James is helping a friend.
09:35Well, one of the machines came across one part here and it sank.
09:40I got a panic phone call saying that they were stuck.
09:43Better call Al.
09:46He's got some pretty big equipment.
09:48He's just the right guy for this job.
09:51Is there any hope of getting to that tow lug there?
09:53Trying.
09:55There's hooks on the lowest part of the machine.
09:58That would be the best.
10:00Mud and water is very dangerous.
10:03Very, very dangerous.
10:05But it's quite far down in the bog.
10:09And it's too dangerous to attempt to get in there.
10:13There's no way we can get in there.
10:17Aye, aye, aye.
10:22Anybody give me an update on 9-7.
10:24Single alternating traffic.
10:27Seven hours north, outside of Quesnel.
10:31We're waiting.
10:32A B train teetering on its fuel tanks.
10:35As Rob needing a lift.
10:39If I drag him backwards or try to pull him sideways, we could rip a fuel tank.
10:44Arriving on site is a 12-ton knuckle boom crane truck.
10:49That's straight ice today.
10:51With operator Alan Frisbee.
10:54Rob just calls me if there's a lift out once in a while.
11:00I'm called the carapoo rotator.
11:02How are you doing?
11:03Not bad.
11:04When it comes down to a lift that's got to come out to the side or lift something out,
11:09I am the guy that Rob gives a holler to.
11:12Just that tank is right on the ground.
11:15Okay.
11:16As long as I can get the pressure off that tank.
11:19He has the ability to pick the front of this truck up so that they're not going to drag on
11:24the ground.
11:24The slick, uneven terrain...
11:27The ground is covered with snow.
11:29...is far from ideal.
11:31I've got to make sure I don't slough out from underneath when I do the lift.
11:35But it's a good angle for the lift.
11:38We are working on a hill on a bit of an icy slope.
11:41It's not flat whatsoever.
11:44For stability...
11:45I do not want it to start sliding.
11:48He deploys the outriggers.
11:55Then extends the crane arm.
12:00And rigs to the front.
12:02And I'm hoping I can lift it.
12:03That's a ways out for me.
12:05Yeah, I'm going to try a spot here.
12:07Rob hooks to the rear of the tractor.
12:11So once he picks it up, I will pull it backwards.
12:16With a line from the 50-ton to the rear,
12:19and a line from the knuckle boom to the front of the tractor,
12:22they'll lift and pull the unit onto the road.
12:30She's shut down.
12:32Traffic is stopped once again.
12:34Give it a shot!
12:36As the knuckle boom
12:38takes on the 20,000-pound tractor.
12:43I have to be cautious if something were to break.
12:49There's a chance of ripping open the tank,
12:51and then we have an environmental mess to deal with.
12:55Hey!
12:56Hello!
12:57Hello!
13:01Anyone hear anything about the 97?
13:05Outside Quennell...
13:06Closed in both directions.
13:10A B-train's fuel tanks...
13:13Closed!
13:14Closed, closed, closed!
13:16...threatened to rupture.
13:18I'm worried about breaking the fuel tanks.
13:21But after closer inspection...
13:24That's okay.
13:25Nothing leaking.
13:26...the fuel tanks are in the clear.
13:29That's good.
13:30I would call it a close call.
13:32Why did the road give out?
13:34I slid off my block.
13:36You went backwards, eh?
13:38The ground sank a little bit.
13:40I slid back.
13:42That's what I was worried about.
13:44That was my fear,
13:45is that there was not enough frost in the ground to hold me up.
13:49I'm gonna come right up to here.
13:51You're gonna come up to here?
13:52Yeah.
13:54He's gonna reposition himself.
13:57On to more solid ground.
14:03Try this again.
14:08I'm hoping that it's gonna go a little bit better.
14:11In spite of a longer reach,
14:14Alan finds his footing.
14:17Hey, Rob!
14:19Start pulling?
14:20Just a little bit.
14:23And with Rob's 50-ton helping...
14:26There we go!
14:28...the B-train...
14:29...is coming out of the ditch.
14:32It's pulling not too bad.
14:35It's moving fairly gently.
14:40With the final swing...
14:44Awesome!
14:45...the tractor is on solid ground.
14:48He's on the road.
14:49No damage.
14:51The tank.
14:52No marks.
14:53No leaks.
14:54So we did exactly what we had to do.
14:56An undamaged truck...
14:58Thanks for your experience here.
15:00Save everything.
15:02...lets the happy driver...
15:04Go, God.
15:05...get back to work.
15:07We're not gonna do anything away.
15:09It's all driving away.
15:10He can continue his day.
15:12He's gonna be fairly happy with the situation.
15:14Traffic started moving now.
15:17Awesome.
15:18Thank you, driver.
15:20But...
15:21...before Rob can leave...
15:22You heard about the other?
15:23No.
15:24Apparently there's a new one.
15:26...there's word of another secondary accident...
15:30...a whip off there.
15:32...caused when traffic was stopped.
15:35If someone's not paying attention, they come roaring up...
15:38...to a deadline of traffic, and...
15:40...a secondary is definitely gonna happen.
15:43We're gonna go do that.
15:45Just up the road.
15:46I've never had this many after crashes.
15:50It's kind of an unusual thing.
15:53They crashed off the road there.
15:59A massive hydrovac truck...
16:02...has rolled into the ditch.
16:05A vac truck is just a really big vacuum.
16:07They're all steel.
16:09They're just big and nasty.
16:12Lots of bad things can happen to all of them big girls.
16:18Cold out there.
16:20Seven hours south.
16:22Too cold.
16:24In the Fraser Valley.
16:26Oh, that might be the problem.
16:28A sunken excavator.
16:32There's no way we can get in there.
16:34What can we do...
16:36...to get this thing hooked on?
16:37Al has Team Quiring in a quagmire.
16:41It's not safe being under the engine area.
16:46Something could settle, and now you've got a worker trapped.
16:51We're gonna rip that out of there.
16:53Over the years...
16:55Today's the day, buddy.
16:56Al and Team Green...
17:00Go big or go home.
17:02...have built a reputation...
17:04Wind her up.
17:05Give her some throttle.
17:06...for tackling mud bog recoveries.
17:10Woo!
17:13Today, with the tow hook out of reach...
17:17...we're gonna have to get up on top of the machine.
17:20They'll draw on years of experience...
17:24...to create their own pull point.
17:27We're gonna do it the old-fashioned way...
17:29...and just work a big-ass cabler on the whole machine.
17:34With the hook point hidden underwater...
17:37...they'll wrap a cable around the pivot point...
17:41...and with a line from Al's D-9...
17:44...pull the excavator out of the mud.
17:51The top corner, back corner.
17:54A little more.
17:56You got it?
17:57Yeah.
17:59You don't want that big, heavy cable...
18:01...around the bodywork of that machine...
18:03...because it's just gonna crush it all to bits.
18:05You gotta get that cable underneath.
18:07The strongest part of that whole machine...
18:09...is between the track frame.
18:11And the, uh, excavator chassis.
18:13I should've brought my hip-pointers.
18:16Just gotta make sure that we got the belly wrap...
18:18...on the belly.
18:20I won't have the same mechanical advantage...
18:23...as grabbing it lower on the chassis...
18:26...but, uh, I'll have a better hold of it.
18:30So, Al.
18:31We got James in there with his boots.
18:33Volunteers the newbie of the group.
18:37In the four and a half feet of water there.
18:41It's always a question, who's gonna get wet?
18:44Swimming angle!
18:49Oh, my God!
18:50I am so cold.
18:53I'm the little man.
18:54I'm the one gonna get wet.
18:57Oh!
18:57Here's the cable.
19:20Here's the cable.
19:27Different plans.
19:28Come on!
19:29Even with the excavator arm as leveraged...
19:33Still stuck.
19:34...the machine refuses to budge.
19:38But Carrie...
19:40Get him to turn it!
19:41...has an idea.
19:43Could try it, yeah.
19:45...rotating the chassis to break free of the mud...
19:49...surrounding the pivot point.
19:51Okay.
19:53Hopefully this works.
19:54Turning the bearing, the rotak bearing.
19:57Keep going.
19:58That's it.
20:00We're doing it blind, below the water line.
20:05Yeah, it's under now.
20:07I'm soaking wet and freezing cold.
20:10Oh, my God!
20:12Attaboy.
20:13Couldn't have done it without you.
20:16But we're ready to go.
20:18Al's gonna get the job done.
20:20Okay, here we go.
20:23Hooked to the 80,000-pound machine...
20:27Okay.
20:30Al gets ready for the pull.
20:33When you engage that winch, it's 140,000-pound capacity.
20:38But even with the big D-9's pulling power...
20:41Get him to run the tracks, but tell him not to spin.
20:45He'll need the operator's help.
20:47Okay.
20:49That machine is buried in the mud good.
20:51And that's gonna increase the resistance.
20:53If you just winch, it's never gonna break free.
20:59Okay.
21:00Are we ready?
21:01Yeah.
21:08Come on.
21:09Get him to back up.
21:11Come on, buddy.
21:12He's not even going.
21:14Keep trackin' back.
21:16The tracks.
21:17The tracks in gear!
21:20Let's go!
21:21Come on!
21:22Put it in gear!
21:23There's mud on the pedals.
21:25The operator is trying to get the snake all nice and dry.
21:28The operator finally gets the tracks moving.
21:35Okay!
21:37Tell him keep doing tracks!
21:38Put it in gear!
21:39Keep her going!
21:40But the excavator...
21:43Come on, track!
21:44No!
21:46Don't spin!
21:48...is sinking deeper in the mud.
21:51The tracks need to turn a little bit.
21:54Not too fast, because you're just digging yourself in deeper.
21:58No, no, no, no, no, no!
22:01No, no, no!
22:01Whoa, whoa!
22:02Whoa!
22:04No, no, no, no, no!
22:08Whoa!
22:10In the Fraser Valley...
22:12Whoa, hey!
22:14...Team Green's Mudbog Excavator Rescue...
22:18No!
22:19...is spinning...
22:21No!
22:21...out of control.
22:23The tracks start spinning.
22:25It's heavy.
22:26Really heavy.
22:28Just sticking the back end down into the ground deeper, dragging his heels in.
22:33Just late!
22:34Wait, wait!
22:35For better traction...
22:37Okay, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on!
22:39...owl heads for firmer ground.
22:42It's too slippery, so I'm gonna get up on top of some roots.
22:50Here we go, boys.
22:5150 feet into the bush...
22:55Al starts to winch again.
22:58Okay, go, float.
23:01Push with the stick, like the bucket.
23:04Hell yeah!
23:08It's moving!
23:10Oh, he's figured it out now.
23:12Here we go.
23:13With a nudge from the boom...
23:18...boom...
23:19Yeah, we're coming up.
23:22The excavator walks out of its would-be watery grave.
23:28There you go.
23:29Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:32That was just enough to get it up.
23:35That's it.
23:36He's out.
23:38Once we got coordinated, it came out easy.
23:42The fella's gonna be able to go back to work tomorrow, which makes me happy.
23:46All right, fellas.
23:48All in all, it was a good day.
23:50They came, they pulled, they went, they did an awesome job.
23:53I would love to work with a choir and family again.
23:56Oh!
24:00As long as I don't have to be in chest-deep water again.
24:05Awesome.
24:06James, it's like chocolate and peanut butter.
24:10But he was in the mud, so I'm okay with that, too.
24:13Sounds a little exciting.
24:16Right on.
24:16Any day I'm working with Carrie, this is, like, the best part of my whole life.
24:21Not too bad.
24:22Working with my dad on these jobs.
24:24It is very special.
24:26Yeah, we're gonna get out of here.
24:32Locking the big iron out of the bush, it's another successful mud bog battle.
24:38All right, let's burn some diesel.
24:40For the quiring family.
24:42Let's roll.
24:43My family's been well-known for handling these big jobs.
24:48And it's just one more thing that keeps us busy throughout the year.
24:53And that's all she moved.
24:56Safe travels, driver.
25:01Look at the site.
25:04Outside Cornell, on Highway 97.
25:07Yeah, it's gigantic.
25:08Another secondary wreck lies sideways in a ditch.
25:14He touched his brakes and laid over.
25:19Minutes earlier, a massive double wreck had traffic backing up over 350 meters.
25:27When an approaching back truck lost control,
25:30the driver avoided crashing into the back of the lined-up traffic
25:35by putting his truck in the ditch.
25:40First to the scene, a 35-ton heavy from another tow company.
25:46It did pick up.
25:47It moved a little bit.
25:48And operator, Stuart Haver.
25:51Stu got here and attempted to pull it over and didn't quite work.
25:56It's a hydro-back.
25:59A hydro-back truck is used for digging,
26:03using heated, pressurized water,
26:05while vacuuming the slurry back into its tanks.
26:11Fully loaded.
26:13It is heavy.
26:14Uncomfortably heavy.
26:16The truck weighs 60,000 pounds.
26:19The vac truck probably outweighs both of us.
26:22With Stu's 35-ton outgunned.
26:26Going out, then?
26:27Yeah.
26:28Rob adds his 50-ton into the mix.
26:31Feels good to help out another business.
26:34With two of us, it should be okay.
26:35But today's recovery.
26:37I've actually never stood one up.
26:39Will be a first for Rob.
26:41So, I'm kind of unconfident right now.
26:45Okay, keep pulling off a little bit.
26:47For the best angle of pull,
26:50we'll jump out.
26:51Rob must block the highway
26:53for the third time today.
26:58You know what?
26:59Another secondary.
27:01So we'll try to get traffic rolling as quick as we can.
27:04But I don't know if I got enough to even move it.
27:07With the 35-ton at the front...
27:11We'll give it a tug, see what happens.
27:14Rob's 50-ton will do the heavy lifting at the rear.
27:19Let's hope it moves.
27:21The center of gravity is really high on a vac truck.
27:24Once it comes out of the ditch,
27:26it can roll down into me.
27:28Keep pulling.
27:30I'm going to run out way too fast.
27:36Oh, oh.
27:39You want 97?
27:43Oh, yeah.
27:43I killed this again.
27:45North of Quesnel.
27:48Yeah, keep pulling.
27:49A 60,000-pound rollover
27:52as Rob coordinating with the competition.
27:57You kind of always want to be able to
27:59holler back and forth.
28:01Whoa, whoa.
28:03To get someone to stop or speed up.
28:06Okay.
28:07So you kind of work on the same page.
28:12Oh, I come over really gentle.
28:14To see so much weight safely rollover,
28:18it's impressive.
28:19But before they can open the highway...
28:23Do you want to hold it upright
28:24and I pull it forward?
28:26They'll need to swap positions...
28:29Yeah, you'll definitely anchor better.
28:30I can hold it.
28:31...to pull the wreck onto the road.
28:34It's still leaning quite heavily in the ditch.
28:37My truck is a little bit heavier.
28:38We'll put it out front.
28:41You want to run lying down
28:42and pull it this way.
28:43Drag your ass over.
28:44Yep, yep, yep.
28:46I'm going to get Stu to grab onto the back tires
28:49and drag it sideways as I pull it forward.
28:52Give it a little tug.
28:55So it lands on the road.
28:58A little bit more.
28:59Only 45 minutes since Rob's arrival.
29:03Way less grunting
29:05than I thought was going to happen.
29:07And the massive back truck...
29:09Yeah, it's all done.
29:10...is back on its wheels.
29:13Wrecks on the road.
29:15Yeah, it's a good feeling.
29:16Went really well.
29:18They're starting to move now.
29:21I'm amazed it opened this fast.
29:25Traffic's released.
29:26We didn't get another secondary accident.
29:28Can we do the pleasure of my brand?
29:30Yeah.
29:31There is competition,
29:32but it's nice to work together.
29:35What?
29:35Yeah, that's wrong.
29:36Now, Stu's going to tow it away
29:38and I can just go home.
29:40After clearing three connected wrecks,
29:43Highway 97 is finally open.
29:47I have never had a day
29:48with that many crashes,
29:50but nobody got hurt.
29:52It was a successful day.
29:54Get the shiny side up, guys.
29:58See you guys, thank you.
30:13That's cold out there.
30:14The next day, 570 kilometers south.
30:19Ah, it's brutal.
30:21On mountainous Highway 3.
30:25He's going to get real busy real soon.
30:29Early morning freight runs are picking up.
30:32Keeping the economy going
30:34by keeping the freight rolling.
30:38There's a lot of responsibility.
30:41Heading to a call.
30:42A reliable towing 50-ton heavy.
30:45Two coals.
30:47With lead operator Andy Cullum.
30:50Currently it says it's minus 30
30:52right where we are.
30:54For BC, that's extremely cold
30:56because it's very humid.
30:58So the trucks tend to freeze up.
31:01When the weather hits on this section of highway,
31:04we can take some drivers by surprise.
31:07Close behind in a 35-ton.
31:10All righty.
31:12Is heavy operator John Diles.
31:15Starting to become morning rush.
31:17So we want to be in and out of there
31:19as fast as we can.
31:20We'll see what happens.
31:22Just below the peak of Sunday Summit.
31:27Is that a Jack Knight trailer?
31:30That was a wild ride.
31:33Arriving on scene.
31:35You all right?
31:36Andy makes sure the driver...
31:39Yeah, I'm okay.
31:39...is unharmed.
31:41It was scary.
31:42As soon as I took the curb,
31:43I started sliding and I lost completely control.
31:47Despite the wild ride...
31:49Might be able to drive it down the hill
31:51and we're done.
31:52The semi remains in good condition.
31:56This guy got so lucky, he didn't even put a scratch in the truck or the trailer.
32:03It's cold!
32:04To swing the cab out of the snowbank...
32:07Where am I hooking this?
32:09Swamper Kyle Crofts...
32:11Back up here!
32:13Hit!
32:14...hooks John's 35-tonne to the rear of the tractor.
32:19Done!
32:20We're going to spin it back out of the ditch the same way it went in,
32:23and have it come back out as a pretzel.
32:26Andy readies his 50-tonne to anchor the back of the trailer.
32:31What the hell's going on?
32:33But the winch line...
32:36...refuses to budge.
32:39It's frozen.
32:40Are you kidding me?
32:42The winch is frozen.
32:45Not ideal.
32:48The cold is taking its toll on the equipment.
32:52Let's see what we got here.
32:54But Andy came prepared.
32:59I carry a torch because success is the only option, so we make things work.
33:06Try again.
33:11Okay.
33:12Stop.
33:14We're good.
33:15Feels great.
33:15Get the winch working.
33:16Now let's put it to use.
33:18Okay.
33:20As they finally hook Andy's line...
33:25Hey, just watch yourself.
33:27The morning rush is inches away.
33:32Just about killed me.
33:33We've got to hurry up and get this done.
33:35See that?
33:37It's not a safe area to be in.
33:39Are we ready yet?
33:41Let's go!
33:43Let's go!
33:44Go!
33:46Go!
33:52It's a fully loaded trailer.
33:55So...
33:55We've got some weight behind it.
33:58It's gonna bite.
34:01She's slippery.
34:03Oh, I love winter.
34:07What are these guys doing on the hill here?
34:10Is there a recovery?
34:11On Highway 3!
34:15Ah!
34:17Andy's 50-ton is losing a tug-of-war with a fully loaded semi.
34:25Road conditions are super icy, and all we're doing is dragging Thor down the hill towards the wreck here.
34:32So John booms up on the other end...
34:36Hey, we go!
34:37...for more lift.
34:39We got it out.
34:41Now we've got to get at the front end of it.
34:44Yeah, we're gonna move my rimsling up to the front.
34:47And get the tractor straightened out.
34:50Yeah.
34:50There you go.
34:52Try to keep your wheel turned to the left.
34:54We're gonna get the driver working with us.
34:57With the 50-ton anchoring the trailer...
35:01Yeah.
35:02...and the 35-ton pulling the tractor around...
35:05All righty.
35:07We're in action.
35:10...team reliable...
35:12...team reliable...
35:14...straightens out the jackknife.
35:17Woo-hoo!
35:20Yeah, we got her.
35:22Working with Andy.
35:23It's always fun.
35:25Okay.
35:26Pull ahead.
35:27Carefully.
35:28Slowly.
35:29We like to make sure the drivers are taken care of.
35:32Get everybody on their way and safe and sound.
35:36With no damage to his truck...
35:38...the driver continues on with his delivery...
35:42...and freight traffic on Highway 3...
35:45...is back to full strength.
35:49That's it.
35:50Job done.
35:53Will the woman go to bed?
35:56We have people that we can count on when the chips are down...
35:58...so we're gonna meet any of the challenges that come this winter.
36:01Thanks, guys, for doing that.
36:0510-4, good to go.
36:13100 kilometers west...
36:15...at the Jamie Davis yard in Hope...
36:18I'm checking everything.
36:20...his newest hire from the East Coast...
36:23Oh, dear.
36:25...Maxim Chamberlain Norman...
36:28...prepares for his first solo mission.
36:32I'm going to the Coco Island...
36:35...helping people.
36:38Hey, Max.
36:39You ready to do patrols up on the hill?
36:41Yeah, I'm ready.
36:42We have to be a little more aggressive and get business...
36:44...because everything's happening up the hill.
36:46On the coke nowadays...
36:48...you're gonna fight for that job.
36:50You know, it's just not coming to you like it used to.
36:52Hopefully, catch a fish.
36:54Yeah.
36:54Okay.
36:57I think he's ready to go out on his own.
37:01We'll give him a shot.
37:04Up the hill...
37:06...Maxim arrives at the summit...
37:08...on the hunt.
37:10I try my best to find something.
37:13But the competition...
37:15...is already one wreck ahead.
37:18It's a pressure on you because...
37:20...you need to bring money to the company, right?
37:25Thirty minutes into his patrol...
37:28...a stopped four-wheeler catches his attention.
37:35I can see that he's looking for help.
37:40Hello.
37:41Do you need a toe?
37:42A closer look.
37:44Oh, there's a flat right there.
37:47Reveals a tire...
37:48...in less than pristine condition.
37:51I don't like that.
37:53Holy.
37:54You never know how the flat's gonna end up.
37:57Do you have a spare tire or...
37:59No spare tire?
38:01Yeah.
38:02With no spare...
38:04...Maxim hooks his first job.
38:08I was pretty happy that I found something.
38:12Chilly out here.
38:13You look like you're freezing.
38:14He offers shelter...
38:16I don't want you to freeze.
38:18...to the driver and his girlfriend.
38:22They've been waiting, so...
38:23...you need to do what you can to help.
38:25The customers...
38:26We have a schedule, so...
38:29...have a deadline to meet their tour group in Banff.
38:33Let's do it.
38:34So, Maxim gets to work.
38:38The customer always a priority.
38:41This is my first ever toe.
38:46And I try to remember how to do it, from what Jamie told me.
38:52So, I'm gonna get you into this little tow truck here.
38:55A week ago...
38:57What the?
38:58Jamie gave Maxim his first lessons...
39:02The mixture is straight.
39:04...to pull off a dolly tow.
39:07Okay, so realize the pressure that's in you.
39:14Today...
39:14Here we go.
39:15Maxim puts his new skills to the test.
39:19I'm gonna put the doll in the back.
39:21...on his own.
39:23I hope I get it right.
39:25When it's your first time, it's more stressful.
39:29I don't want to mess up.
39:31Under watchful eyes...
39:34...Maxim gets the first side.
39:36Here.
39:37Locked in.
39:39But on the flat tire side.
39:44Hi, Max.
39:45Is it okay?
39:46It don't go in there.
39:47Things aren't going as planned.
39:50Ah.
39:51I can't put it on the wheel.
39:53No, I think I can't...
39:55I can't tow a car with a flat.
39:58I don't know what to do.
40:00I feel a little pressure.
40:04There's a broken-down car down the right-hand side of the road.
40:10On the Coquihalla Highway...
40:13Come on, you.
40:14...a flat tire tow...
40:16I can't push it.
40:19...has Jamie's newest operator struggling.
40:23Just because it's a flat...
40:25...it's different, eh?
40:28You got a lot going on on your first job.
40:30The equipment...
40:31...being on the highway.
40:33You have to think about the customer.
40:36I'll find a way.
40:37He's got to roll with it as it goes.
40:40There's a way.
40:41For Jamie, I need to show that I can do it.
40:45With a customer on a deadline.
40:48I think I'm going to need to tow it from the back.
40:54Maxim shifts gears.
40:56If it don't work...
40:59...you need to find another way to do it.
41:03Repositioning...
41:04...he takes the tow...
41:06...from the other side.
41:10I have high hopes for Max.
41:13He's probably going through some nervousness and self-doubt.
41:19...but he just has to work his way through the problems.
41:23Well, it doesn't work.
41:25And he'll get the hang of it pretty quick.
41:31Hopefully it worked this time.
41:37There we go.
41:40Maxim's quick thinking...
41:42...to switch sides...
41:45...has made the difference.
41:48Okay. Poof.
41:50That's it.
41:51I'm happy. That's all.
41:55The job is all done.
41:56Sorry to make you wait.
41:58Well, I think you're professional.
42:01Well, I try to.
42:02Thank you. Thank you.
42:04It's helping people...
42:07...and make my day.
42:09Let's go.
42:10Yeah.
42:12Maxim's first solo job...
42:17Kirk towing somebody else.
42:20He's towed away with a win.
42:23Max has done his first job successfully.
42:26I think he's happy with himself.
42:28I'm happy with him.
42:30Good job.
42:31Being able to prove yourself is a big deal.
42:34Not many kids have that ambition.
42:36And he does.
42:39And I think Max will go a long ways here.
42:44Good time. Good time.
42:46Right on.
42:49Next time, on Highway Through Hill...
42:53You got one shot.
42:54...reliables balancing act...
42:56How close are we to that truck?
42:58Oh, he come back!
43:00...comes down to engines...
43:02Oh!
43:03Flight just barely do it.
43:05...big green...
43:07...is maxed out...
43:08That doesn't sound good.
43:10That excavator is in there.
43:12...and aggressive...
43:13Try to get his tracks this way.
43:15...gets down and dirty.
43:17Launch yourselves, boys.
43:45...sobs of red,
43:48...and to make sure...
43:48...the man that takes the size of the truck...
43:48...can run...
43:48...do you?
43:48So that was a massive effect of all the people...
43:49...you can see it.
43:49...and the air thatago...
43:49The same thing...
43:49...as it was...
