00:02So, Emma, welcome back to Roland Garros, and congratulations on your win in Strasbourg.
00:07Can you just tell us how that win helped your preparations for this couple weeks?
00:11Yeah, it felt good getting the win in Strasbourg.
00:15I really wasn't expecting it, but I've been enjoying my time out in the clay courts
00:21and having fun, working hard and trying to get better.
01:23and now I'm feeling good physically, I feel good mentally
01:27I'm enjoying my time out in the court
01:30and I feel grateful to be back on tour
01:32I think when you step away you kind of have a new perspective
01:35and you can come back just with a lot of appreciation
01:39to get to live this life and travel the world and play tennis
01:44and yeah, there's always new experiences to be had
01:47and new people to meet
01:49so I feel really grateful to be back out here
01:52Do you feel like those health issues are under control now
01:55or is this still something you're figuring out?
01:57Yeah, it's a little bit of a work in progress still
02:00but I made huge strides when I was home
02:04and yeah, I'm feeling pretty good
02:08Just, yeah, congratulations on the win the other day and today
02:12Just on the health stuff, is that exacerbated by playing tennis
02:17or is it something separate?
02:20Yeah, definitely exacerbated by playing tennis
02:25The tour is tough and it'll take it out of you
02:28and it's kind of constant travel
02:31and a lot of stress on the body and the mind
02:35and you're always in unfamiliar environments
02:39and competing every week
02:42So, yeah, it definitely takes a toll on the body a bit
02:46So what did those couple months look like?
02:49Was it just sort of sleeping a lot, resting, put the rackets in the closet
02:54or was it one of these things where, you know, people are on the practice court every day
03:00fighting to get back or somewhere in the middle?
03:02Yeah, a bit of both
03:04I kind of took a couple weeks to regroup a little bit
03:10and then, yeah, I was back on the practice court shortly after training
03:16and, yeah, getting physically ready to come back to the tour
03:22So, yeah, a little of both
03:23Did you always know you wanted to come back?
03:26Like, was it definitely, like, yeah, I'm absolutely going to do this?
03:31Yeah, I knew I wanted to come back
03:34I think there's, I have more that I want to get out of tennis
03:39that I haven't gotten out of it yet
03:41and I think, you know, there's more
03:43that's more exciting things in the future for me
03:48and, yeah, there wasn't really an option for me to not come back
03:52What did you miss about it?
03:56I think I missed the challenge of it
03:59It's a really, really hard sport
04:01and every week presents a new challenge
04:05and a new obstacle
04:06Every day, really, is a new challenge
04:08and, you know, that's something that I don't get
04:12when I'm away from the tour
04:14so I like how hard it is
04:16and how much it just challenges me
04:20mentally and physically
04:21and, yeah, it makes me be a better me, I think
04:26So, yeah, that's what I like about it
04:28How do you, sort of, going forward
04:30manage your schedule and workload
04:33and stress load to the extent you can control that
04:36to try to keep things in good place for you
04:39mentally and then, I guess, therefore, physically?
04:44Yeah, I think just
04:48trying not to run myself into the ground
04:52I think there was a year, a couple years ago
04:55where I played, like, almost 100 matches maybe in a year
04:58and maybe at that time
05:01that was what I needed to do
05:02and I could do that
05:04but I think I've sort of learned, like,
05:06you can't do that every year
05:08You know, it gets to a point where you have to
05:10manage yourself a little bit better
05:12and, you know, try to manage your schedule
05:15to the best of your ability
05:16That being said, I do like playing a lot of matches
05:19and competing a lot of weeks
05:21So, I think just learning to find the balance
05:24between competing
05:26but also kind of managing my energy
05:29and, yeah, just managing myself
05:33I guess getting a win, like, Strasburg
05:36relatively quickly after you returned to tour
05:39or is that something you would have expected?
05:41Did you feel like you were ready, tennis-wise, physically
05:44to be competitive at that sort of level
05:47and beating the kind of players you beat?
05:50Yeah, I was honestly surprised
05:52like, practice is one thing
05:54you can feel really good practicing
05:56but it's totally different
05:57when you get back out in the match court
05:59and I knew I had a lot to learn on the match court
06:03I still do
06:04but I was kind of surprised that it came back
06:07relatively quickly
06:09and, yeah, I think I learned a ton last week
06:11and, you know, kind of really put a lot of physical
06:15and mental things together
06:16to be able to, yeah, win some high-level matches
06:21but, yeah, I was a bit surprised
06:23that it happened as quickly as it did
06:25Just in terms of things happening fast
06:27and that's kind of, was your career trajectory
06:29a couple years ago at least
06:30I remember for Australia one year
06:32a couple of foreign reporters asking me who you were
06:35because they didn't know your name and you were seeded
06:36at that tournament
06:37and you just kind of came out of nowhere
06:38for a lot of people it seemed like
06:40I mean, looking back, how fast do you realize now
06:42how sort of fast things came for you
06:44in that stretch of your career
06:45maybe was that a lot to process
06:47to handle and to adjust to
06:50Yeah, things did happen really fast
06:53I think at the time you're just, you know
06:56kind of living week to week
06:58and it doesn't feel like it's happening that fast
07:00and you feel like, you know, you're processing everything
07:04and taking everything in
07:06and then when you look back
07:07it's kind of not so much that way
07:09and you realize, you know, things happen really fast
07:12and, you know, I'm 25 now
07:15and I think about me being 22
07:17and it feels like I was so young at the time
07:20and I didn't know anything
07:21and I still don't know anything
07:23but I have a little bit more experience under my belt
07:28so, yeah, I think, you know
07:30these past couple years
07:31I've been able to kind of process
07:33and settle in a little bit more
07:35and kind of get more comfortable with
07:37yeah, the ebbs and flows of the tour
07:40With what you proved to yourself and others in Strasburg
07:44does it change at all your motivation or goal setting
07:47for the short-term future here?
07:51I think I have high standards for myself
07:55but I'm not, you know, putting too much pressure on myself
07:59to, you know, make a deep run
08:01I'm not really thinking that far ahead
08:04You know, I have a tough challenge in the first round
08:08and haven't even looked at the draw past that
08:10so I'll be focusing on that
08:12and just taking it one match at a time
08:14and seeing what happens
08:16Other than the sort of scheduling aspect of it all
08:21which I guess is sort of a function
08:22of how much any player wins as well
08:25Are there specific changes that you've made
08:29in terms of like, okay, this time when I go back
08:31I'm gonna either practice a little
08:35do a little less volume with training or the gym
08:39or make sure to get some downtime
08:42even if I'm on the road
08:44and, you know, go for walks
08:45things like that
08:47Any specific changes that you've been doing
08:51the last couple weeks since you've been back out
08:54or even before
08:56that you think are making a big difference?
08:58Yeah, a little bit
09:00I think
09:01not always just
09:03doing what I think I'm supposed to be doing
09:05but
09:06doing what
09:07I feel is best for me
09:09on a given day
09:10in terms of
09:11how much I practice
09:13how much I'm in the gym
09:14what I do outside of practice
09:17so
09:18yeah, kind of being a little bit more
09:20pragmatic day to day
09:21and
09:22if I feel like, you know
09:23an hour on court is
09:25enough for me that day
09:27then do that
09:27if I feel like I want to play three hours
09:29then do that
09:30and
09:31yeah, being able to
09:33adjust and adapt a little bit more
09:34day to day
09:36I think is
09:37something I'm doing a little bit differently
09:40and then
09:41I also felt like
09:42before
09:43I kind of
09:44you know
09:45I wanted to
09:46take every city in
09:48and do all the things
09:49in a city
09:50and I was kind of just
09:52you know
09:52running myself into the ground
09:54a little bit
09:54so
09:56I'm
09:57resting when I need to rest now
09:59and
09:59getting out when I feel like
10:01I need to get out
10:02so
10:02yeah
10:02kind of just like
10:03managing my energy
10:04a little bit better
10:09Oh yeah
10:10grandparents are pretty good
10:12about giving advice
10:13that
10:13at least
10:14my kids were
10:15you were
10:16sure
10:17you were predicting

10:23yeah
10:23I saw her a good bit
10:24when I was home
10:26no real advice
10:27really
10:28but
10:28you know
10:29when you spend time
10:30with your
10:31grandparents
10:32my grandmother
10:33specifically
10:33it's
10:34it's so
10:35grounding
10:36you know
10:36like
10:37she's incredibly wise
10:39and
10:40you kind of realize
10:42that
10:42there are
10:43a lot of things
10:44that are more important
10:46than
10:46than winning
10:47or losing
10:47a tennis match
10:48and
10:49family's definitely
10:50up there
10:51in that category
10:51for me
10:52so
10:52that was definitely
10:54a grounding time
10:55you
10:56you
10:58you
10:59you
