Starboard head Monty stops by the show to celebrate the Junkies 30 year anniversary.
Transcript
00:00You know, thanks to everybody that came out and made the trek down here to Dewey Beach.
00:03We definitely appreciate that.
00:05We also appreciate the hospitality shown to us over many, many years, over decades, actually,
00:11by the proprietor of the Starbird, Monty, down on the end of the table.
00:15Thank you, Monty, again, for having us and showing us a great time.
00:19Monty, how did we, because a couple people asked me last night, they're like,
00:22how did you guys link up with the Starbird and Monty?
00:25And I was like, I don't know, like 2002 or something.
00:27We came down here and did Running of the Bull.
00:29Oh, yeah, I believe our mutual friend Stevie Johnson might have had something to do back in these days.
00:35Oh, yeah, Steve.
00:36Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
00:37That was a good time, though.
00:38Well, Monty's the mayor.
00:39I can't believe what you've done.
00:41Every time we come here, you own another restaurant, another apparel shop, I don't know.
00:46Or you add the addition to the bar.
00:48This is unbelievable.
00:49What year did it start for you here?
00:51I started as a 17, 18-year-old kid in 1987, 88.
00:55Wow.
00:56And then we bought the place in 1999.
00:58Right.
00:58And the rest are kind of history.
01:00It's been, I love the brand.
01:02I love what we do for people.
01:04I love how loyal our people are here.
01:06And mostly I love Dewey Beach.
01:08So it's, Dewey Beach is what makes this place so great.
01:11And it's been fun to build it and continue to build it each year.
01:15Right.
01:15It's just, I'm just blown away.
01:19Just, yeah, the loyalty that people have to your brand and to your label and everything.
01:23And I don't know.
01:24I mean.
01:25And this is kicking off the summer, obviously.
01:27Kicking off the summer.
01:29And it's just as packed as ever.
01:32It's busier than ever.
01:33I mean, COVID changed the world in a lot of ways.
01:35A lot of people live at the beach now.
01:36A lot of people come to the beach more often now.
01:39And, you know, Dewey, it's much more of a year-round town than it once was.
01:43What is the attraction to Dewey?
01:45Because I was trying to tell friends, like, I don't know how to describe it.
01:48It's just a small little stretch.
01:50But there is something special about it.
01:51There's something special.
01:52Number one, it's a walking town.
01:53It's two blocks wide and a mile long.
01:55Two, it's got family values.
01:57It's got beach.
01:59You can have dogs on.
02:00And it's got amazing nightlife and outdoor nightlife.
02:03One of the things COVID changed was outdoors, as we are right now.
02:06Now, everybody thinks mentally of being outdoors these days.
02:10And a lot of these beach towns have noise restrictions.
02:14Dewey's come a long way, and it's 30 years of being incorporated.
02:17But back then, it was the wild, wild west.
02:20Yeah.
02:20I don't think there were any noise restrictions in Dewey last month.
02:23I'll just be honest, Ma.
02:25The after I left it was pretty noisy.
02:28But they've been coming.
02:29You've been packed since March, right?
02:30Yeah, yeah.
02:31We kick it off in St. Paddy's Day.
02:32And it's busy weekends until summer.
02:35And now, starting this week, it's seven days a week through summer.
02:38So, state of Delaware, you can have dogs on the beach 12 months a year?
02:44In Dewey Beach, you can have dogs on the beach.
02:48So, you can take your dog out at 3 in the afternoon on a Wednesday?
02:52Not when lifeguards are on duty.
02:54Not from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
02:56I got you.
02:57Before and after.
02:57In Ocean City, you can't do it at all during the summer months.
03:00Same with Rehoboth.
03:01Rehoboth, too, yeah.
03:02But Dewey's different.
03:03Dogs friendly town.
03:04Good.
03:04Good.
03:04That's awesome.
03:05Yeah.
03:05Yeah.
03:06Well, it's so great.
03:07Hey, I went and looked at the ocean for five minutes yesterday.
03:09I felt like I was touching grass connecting with nature.
03:12It was therapeutic.
03:13There's something about this beach that every time we come here, I never go to the beach.
03:17I'm always right here.
03:18I mean, we'll go when we do the run of the bull.
03:20Yeah.
03:20We'll run around and I go, oh, we're actually at a beach.
03:22I know.
03:23It's literally one block that way.
03:25That beach was really crowded until you idiot showed up in town because it was 92 degrees and sunny.
03:30I know.
03:31Two days ago.
03:32We drove everybody away.
03:33I'm sorry.
03:33You know what?
03:34I'm fine with this.
03:35I'll be honest with you.
03:36I like this right now.
03:37This weather is great.
03:38It's perfect.
03:38It's not roasting hot.
03:40No.
03:40It's actually really nice.
03:41It's a little breeze.
03:42Yeah.
03:42I mean, obviously people want the sun out, but this is perfect for me.
03:45It's awesome.
03:46Yeah.
03:46What's it like?
03:47Is this still a thrill for you when you have Coach come out here or some of these guys,
03:50these luminaries come out and hang out and this is kind of like their spot?
03:53I love it because I'm originally a D.C. guy, an Arlington, Virginia guy, so I've grown
03:57up as a Terp fan, a Skins fan, a Caps fan, et cetera, and all those guys find their
04:02way to Dewey at some point.
04:03Right.
04:04Yeah.
04:04And Gary's become a wonderful friend.
04:06He's such a wonderful guy.
04:08He loves being at the beach.
04:09Which, like all of us, something about driving over that Bay Bridge, you just kind of drop
04:13the city life behind you and everybody and some people leave their morals behind them
04:17and just come to do it.
04:19Don't you agree, being a Terps guy, there's an emotional connection that the fan base has,
04:24I know I have, to Gary, that you don't have with many other guys.
04:28No disrespect to other guys.
04:29It's just there's something emotional.
04:30He won us over with that first fist pump, the very first game.
04:33I will tell you all, I know Coach Bray's coming later, Gary's here, Coach Turgeon's
04:37here.
04:38They all hang out in here.
04:39Nobody gets as many picture requests as Gary Williams.
04:42It's unbelievable.
04:43It is unbelievable.
04:43It's funny that he mentioned Mark Turgeon, because Mark and I text back and forth.
04:48Now, Mark actually is in California for a wedding.
04:50He was going to come by, because he's got a house down here.
04:52But on the menu, they've got a Turgeon Tenders, chicken tenders.
04:58Those sound great.
05:00And I didn't know that until Mark told me that.
05:02So he said, when you get to Starbird, he goes, tell Monty, Turgeon Tenders.
05:06So I looked up, and then he brought two plates of Turgeon Tenders last night.
05:10They were phenomenal.
05:11Of course, they're great.
05:12And I took a picture of him.
05:13I said it to Mark.
05:14He goes, 10.
05:15They're a 10 out of 10.
05:16That's my menu item.
05:17Well, we need a junkie's menu item.
05:18I don't understand it.
05:19Maybe we could do that.
05:20That's a great idea.
05:21You know, you brought it up.
05:22Your man Steve Sands has the Sandstots.
05:24Gary Williams has a skillet.
05:26Yeah.
05:27Mike Bray has the Bray-rito.
05:29Okay.
05:29Oh, I didn't know that.
05:30I didn't know Bray.
05:31He didn't tell you that.
05:31We need a menu item.
05:33We'll brainstorm it and come up with something.
05:35Look, we see the kitchen working harder.
05:37They're grinding.
05:38Is there anything that starts with a J?
05:40Junk's jambalaya.
05:42That might be a lot.
05:44It's a lot spicy.
05:45It's a lot to make jambalaya.
05:46I think it is.
05:46I think it's very labor intensive.
05:47It's got to be something easy.
05:48Junk's jerk chicken.
05:50Oh, yeah.
05:50Junk's jerk.
05:51Junk's jerk.
05:52Junk's jerk chicken.
05:53Junk's jalapeno poppers.
05:54No, no, no.
05:55Junk's jerk.
05:55Junk's jerk.
05:56Good call.
05:57How about junk's juice?
05:58We just make some silly cocktail.
05:59That's a great idea, too.
06:00I like that.
06:01Whatever.
06:02We can have a meeting.
06:02But anyway, the turgeon tenders, they were amazing.
06:04They're great, but you know how competitive Gary Williams is.
06:07Oh, yeah.
06:07Even with the menu items, Gary is checking stats to see if he's out selling turgions.
06:11Oh, he is?
06:12Well, I think you told me last night that he wants to make sure that people take more pictures
06:17with him than anybody else.
06:18100%.
06:19He will be keeping score today.
06:21He gets over Kevin Plank, Scott Van Pelt, anybody else.
06:25He'll win.
06:26He'll win.
06:26I don't know.
06:27The one story I always get a kick out of is Gary's so competitive.
06:31We've told it before, but when he was out of Burning Tree one time, one of my buddies
06:34was playing with him, and he hit a shot into the green.
06:37He said, get up, get up, get up.
06:38And Gary immediately looked at him and said, don't ever talk about it.
06:41I know.
06:41I know.
06:42Don't ever drive your cart near him.
06:44Don't ever stand in his line.
06:45Just leave the man alone.
06:46Yeah, let him be.
06:47Let him play his round.
06:50I would not want to ride in a cart with him.
06:53He would blame me for every bad shot.
06:56Just ride in a cart with him.
06:58Do you remember in COVID, they put one person in a cart?
07:01Oh, yeah, yeah.
07:01That rule still holds today.
07:03That rule comes down for Gary.
07:05Gary rules.
07:06All right, so what do you have?
07:07I didn't even know your first name was Steve.
07:09I'm learning that right now.
07:10Nobody calls him twice.
07:11I don't want to call you Steve.
07:13Steve in 30 years.
07:14He joins the show.
07:16That's great.
07:16That's how you get in the front door here.
07:18People say, Steve told me to come.
07:19There must be family.
07:20Come right in.
07:20Right, right.
07:22So what do you have planned for the weekend?
07:24You got bands planned?
07:25And what do you got?
07:26Yeah, you know, Starburst is kind of everybody's home base.
07:28When they get to Dewey, they come here to start their day.
07:30In the day, they might go to the Ball and Cork, the Rudder, to see another band.
07:33Then they come back here.
07:34Yeah.
07:34We've got our own mix of live music.
07:36We mix it up so that, you know, the not as busy times, which really doesn't exist this weekend,
07:41we have live music, you know, this afternoon.
07:42We've got some kids on the stage.
07:45Tomorrow afternoon, we've got bands.
07:47Awesome.
07:47How is the kind of relationship with you, the big dogs, you guys with the big spots?
07:52You guys coordinate well or hate each other?
07:55Is there rivalries?
07:56No.
07:57I am the biggest believer that a rising tide floats all boats.
08:00We're all in this together.
08:01The Starburst is a better place with the Bottling Cork.
08:03The Bottling Cork is a better place with the Starburst.
08:05And we're all friends.
08:06Do we compete?
08:07Sure.
08:07But it's in good fun.
08:09The busier I am, the busier they are, and vice versa.
08:11I was going to say, you're always busy.
08:12All the places are busy down here.
08:13Yep.
08:14It takes all of us.
08:15It takes the little ones.
08:16It takes the big ones.
08:17And, you know, everything.
08:18And there is an ebb and flow to it, right?
08:20Especially for your regulars to come here.
08:21Like, I don't know, maybe they hit the run or something for whatever, and then they come here.
08:25Like, there's a routine kind of to it, right?
08:27A flow?
08:27It's like a college town.
08:28Everybody goes to their spots on Wednesday nights, on Thursday nights, and it's, yes, absolutely.
08:33Right.
08:34Hey, in the cooler, I did notice, and they're a big sponsor.
08:36You've got the sign here.
08:37By the way, we need to go to the cooler at 10.
08:39The Super Light Vodka Plus 8.
08:41Is that flying off the shelves?
08:42Flying off the shelves.
08:43I mean, you could have gotten a Gatorade and vodka for the last 30 years.
08:45Nobody cared.
08:46Right.
08:47Now, it's flying off the shelves.
08:48It's in that blue chill.
08:49It's the blue.
08:50Do you have any of the other ones, or do you just have the blue chill?
08:52We've got the blue right now, and we've experimented with some others.
08:55Lemon Lime's pretty popular, but blue blows the rest away.
08:58Dude, the blue chills.
08:59Yeah.
08:59And you would have no idea there's alcohol in it.
09:01EB was left out yesterday.
09:02I mean, no way.
09:03There are a billion of those cans floating around the starboard.
09:06You didn't have one.
09:06I just said, I want a Surfside.
09:08I don't know.
09:08I just said Surfside.
09:09That's fine, too.
09:09Well, at 8 o'clock, you'll get one.
09:11Yeah.
09:11All right.
09:12You know, everybody thinks they're so healthy.
09:13We all love Surfside, but they're like, the Gatorade comes out.
09:16No sugar.
09:16No this.
09:17Yeah.
09:17The Surfside came out.
09:18No bubbles.
09:19No this.
09:20You know, these are like, I always call them the Captain Morgan and Diet Coke drinkers.
09:23Yeah.
09:23And they're like, everybody's trying to be healthy while they're eating a five-egg omelet
09:27with some cheese.
09:30That's funny.
09:31It's very true.
09:31It's very true.
09:32All right.
09:32Well, Monty, again, thank you for having us out.
09:34It's unbelievable.
09:35We love Monty.
09:36We love the Starboard.
09:37Long place is awesome.
09:38And, yeah, I don't know.
09:39This is incredible.
09:40It's always the greatest time when we come out here.
09:41All right.
09:42When we come back.
09:43Mike Marr's going to have to pay his penance.
09:45Yeah.
09:46He's going to have to pay the piper.
09:46Unfortunately, we're giving him more attention dollars.
09:48Rom's coming out here.
09:50He looks pretty happy about it.
09:52The worst picker is they have to put sunblock all over Rom's body.
09:56Yeah, because it's so sunny.
09:57So we're going to do that next here on the Junkies as we're broadcasting live from Dewey
10:02Beach for our 30th anniversary.
