00:05This time, on highway through hell, a near miss, as reliable under pressure, Jamie's new iron,
00:22helping the competition, and team MSA,
00:28Go, boom up, boom up, face an emergency.
00:31That ambulance is here!
00:37What's the traffic like going in?
00:40You can only go as hot as the guys in front of you.
00:45In western Canada,
00:47Those stretch roads like running a gauntlet this morning.
00:51Highway 1 runs deep.
00:54Be advised, we've got another slowdown.
00:56Through the mountains of southeast British Columbia.
01:02In one of the few open areas of the mountain pass,
01:07lies Three Valley Gap.
01:15We went in there, gangbusters, and lost it.
01:19Must have been a little rough ride.
01:23Four hundred sixty-five kilometres from home in Abbotsford, MSA's 50-ton heavy lion heads to the scene.
01:32Got a call for a loaded tractor trailer in the ditch.
01:37At the wheel, the youngest of the bandwet family, Gurkirat, or Gurk, with his brother, Gursimrit, or Sim.
01:46We know that the wreck is in a wetland, so we're not sure exactly what that means.
01:50So, that may be a challenge.
01:53My dad's in the moose.
01:55Their father, Kirpal, and swamper, Koljit Kang, follow in the 35-ton.
02:02We're wanting more equipment to keep the boys busy and get the business going.
02:08Our new hire, Amr, he's in our tandem bed.
02:11We'll know in a little bit what we're up against.
02:16There's a tow truck on, Steve.
02:20That's pretty bad.
02:28We'll walk down there first, take a look, because they're going to have to shut a land down anyways, right?
02:35Two days ago, the semi lost control, hurtling down the steep embankment, slamming onto its side in a marsh.
02:49There is water.
02:51If this trailer is sitting in the water, it's going to be bad.
02:57Let's see.
03:00Because it's going to be full with the water.
03:03But taking a closer look.
03:05Oh, yeah.
03:06Reveals.
03:07That's all diesel here.
03:09A bigger problem.
03:11You can smell that diesel, eh?
03:13Yeah.
03:14There's diesel in the air.
03:19Oh, boy.
03:20Yeah, it snapped you.
03:4635 kilometers west of Revelstoke.
03:50We have a gap on both corners here. That's perfect.
03:54Team MSA is ready to rig.
03:57We'll be able to get our straps in and do our initial pick.
04:00But a spill will require clearance.
04:03Yeah, we've just got more diesel here than we had initially anticipated.
04:08Minutes later...
04:09The way it's sitting right now, it's all just puddled up in one spot.
04:13An environmental emergency response officer...
04:17Coming right here, yeah, there's already a path going down.
04:19...is on site.
04:21Five litres or 500 litres.
04:23If it's a diesel spill, it's a diesel spill.
04:25You have to report it.
04:27It doesn't look like it's spread anywhere.
04:30No diesel, nothing in the back there.
04:32The truck couldn't have settled in a better way.
04:35With the diesel confined to a small area...
04:38They want us to recover the truck first,
04:41then they'll start the radiation process.
04:44Okay.
04:45They get the green light to begin.
04:48We'll get our trucks pulled through, and we'll get the show on the road.
04:52Because the diesel is confined to a small area,
04:55we're going to recover the wreck, get it out of the ditch,
04:57and then we'll deal with the diesel after the fact.
05:01We've got more than enough muscle.
05:02We'll be good.
05:03We're going to try our best to work quick.
05:07Toe truck's getting ready.
05:09It's a single lane both ways.
05:11That stretch of the highway is very crucial.
05:13There's no detour anywhere near there.
05:17Toe truck's on C.
05:36250 kilometers west.
05:3810-4.
05:40On Highway 5.
05:42Go five minutes out.
05:44Reliable Towing's 35-ton, Elsa, is on the move with operator John Dobbs.
05:52We got a call for a rolled-over reefer trailer.
05:57I'm into a stop.
05:59It's a load of groceries and sushi.
06:06A reefer truck is broken in half, deep in the ditch.
06:12The truck and trailer are completely destroyed.
06:16Half the wall is split open.
06:19With the unload crew nearly finished.
06:22Yeah, so we got two skids left in there that still have some weight on it,
06:26so I'm just waiting for the medium-duty wrecker to get here.
06:31A 16-ton arrives with Reliable's Jesse Manu.
06:36I might have you on this end.
06:39This is a nasty one.
06:41Start swinging this that way.
06:43It's definitely a big job without a 50-ton.
06:46And then yard it up the hill on its side.
06:48Okay.
06:49So that it slides on the snow.
06:52We're working up about a 50-foot drop,
06:55and we're going to be fighting snow in the hill the whole way up.
06:59Dwayne's here.
07:01Got a tandem deck now to help out.
07:04We got a bunch of light-duty guys helping out in the heavy division today.
07:09Reliable operator Dwayne Smith rounds out the team with a deck truck.
07:14We're going to try to land it between all the trucks.
07:17Today's going to be a bit of a learning experience.
07:21Hey, here we go.
07:23John Dodds is a unique character.
07:25He's a hard worker, needs minimal supervision, and knows his way around a tow truck.
07:32I've got to separate them.
07:34Okay.
07:34There's no way it'll come up together, so.
07:36No doubt.
07:38I'm confident that he's going to be able to help the others that don't have as much experience
07:43and are learning on these big racks.
07:47Run this one down to that front axle.
07:49We'll bring the other one to the trailer.
07:52We'll try to swing the tractor like this while we pull up on the trailer.
07:57Okay.
07:58We're going to run this one over and that one to the back.
08:02We're going to separate the tractor if we can.
08:04The fifth wheel plate's pretty twisted, but we're going to see what we can do.
08:08No snatch block.
08:09No snatch block.
08:12What's going to be tough about this one is getting the truck detached from the trailer.
08:17Merit manager Lane Perry is also on scene.
08:22They should just give it a try right now and see if we can separate.
08:26It's very important to support each other out on the road.
08:31Okay, tighten her up.
08:38John's 35-ton works the tractor.
08:41Think I'm good where I'm at now?
08:43As Jesse's 16-ton.
08:45Try to straighten it out.
08:47And Dwayne's flat deck.
08:48We've got to give John boy all the help he needs.
08:51Pull on the trailer's bogeys.
08:53It's my first time really getting out there with a bunch of new guys.
08:57I'm trying to show them how to do it.
09:00You're coming up way high.
09:02I know.
09:02Okay.
09:05I'm going to be learning a lot from him.
09:07Heads up.
09:08And we're going to work together here and get this done.
09:11Oh, he's moving it.
09:14Under John's coordination.
09:17How's that?
09:18The three wreckers.
09:20There you go.
09:22That's good.
09:23Pull the units apart.
09:25Gotta love that!
09:27We're under pressure to get this thing off the road.
09:30We've still got quite a bit of work ahead of us here.
09:33Fingers crossed.
09:38Two and a half hours east.
09:40Traffic in Three Valley Gap.
09:43We're alternating traffic.
09:46Squeezes by Team MSA.
09:49Pull the unit.
09:51Given that the trailer is hauling mail, we're not allowed to offload it without the proper authorities.
09:57We're just going to flip it and recover it as is.
09:59Karpal's youngest son, Gurk.
10:01Without doing any damage.
10:03Takes command.
10:04You want to pull those straps out right now?
10:06Yeah.
10:08His boots are all soaked, so he's got to put the waders on.
10:12With Kuljit swanping.
10:15Okay, Kuljit, I'm going to go down.
10:17Yeah.
10:18Gurk is a good leader.
10:20Ladder, ladder!
10:22But sometimes he's just a little bit too bossy.
10:27Oh!
10:30Okay, Kuljit.
10:32Take this strap.
10:34And feed it underneath that corner there.
10:39Crossing our straps allows us to evenly distribute our weight all the way through the trailer.
10:43Make sure it's seated properly.
10:45Without causing any more damage.
10:51With the trailer's wall bearing the weight of the load, the 50 ton will take on the front.
10:58The 35 ton will cross over for the rear, while also using its side puller on the tractor's drives.
11:06With the deck truck pulling on the nose.
11:11Tighten it up, Mr. Ben.
11:16Should we do this?
11:22Forced to recover the trailer loaded.
11:28Sim, let me catch up a bit.
11:32They start to roll it.
11:35Sim!
11:36Tighten up your highline a bit!
11:41Safely out of the water.
11:44This was the easy part.
11:47Getting the trailer upright without damaging it.
11:50Now we've got to get it out without damaging it.
11:53Yep.
11:54But without their lines...
11:56Keep tension!
11:57...the wreck could easily topple back over at any moment.
12:02Let's go there, I think.
12:03That's it?
12:04Kind of a vulnerable stage in the recovery right now.
12:07Because this bank is very steep.
12:10Last thing we want is this trailer to go back over.
12:13They couldn't have picked a worse spot.
12:18Looks like a bunch of activity going on in there.
12:21At Three Valley Gap...
12:23Yeah, I'm wanting my old truck to take a truck in a ditch.
12:27MSA holds a wreck from toppling back over.
12:31I think it might be better to get my truck in the front now.
12:34But they need to reposition their wreckers.
12:38Okay, I don't think I'm going to be able to let go of my top line.
12:42To pull the semi up the bank.
12:44Well, we're going to have to shut down both lanes then.
12:47We got it up nice and smooth.
12:49So now we're going to reposition some of the trucks
12:52and get it back onto the road.
12:56Two days ago, the semi lost control...
13:01...and landed in the marsh.
13:05We're going to need to shut the highway down.
13:08Now...
13:11...they need a complete closure of highway.
13:15We don't want to shut the highway down but it's really the only way to do it at the moment.
13:20With traffic stopped...
13:22I'm holding on my end.
13:24...the 50-ton repositions at the rear.
13:29So I backed in and turned my truck around so that we can get the moose free.
13:34The whole road is shut down here.
13:37And once I've got all the weight on the 50-ton here, we're going to get that high line off
13:41of the moose
13:41and we're going to get all the tension on the high line of the 50.
13:46Let this line out, bro.
13:50Okay, bro, that's good for now.
13:52But as the big 50-ton takes the weight...
13:56...you're not going to get more snug than that.
14:01...traffic is backing up.
14:03We have a time limit.
14:05...and the clock is ticking.
14:08Clean up for mass, let's get going.
14:11Big clock on a slide.
14:15An hour north of Merritt, on Highway 5.
14:19Lights are on, tow truck's up there.
14:22Reliable wrestles with a destroyed trailer.
14:25Pull that way, we've got to hold tighter on it.
14:28Working with smaller wreckers.
14:31I'm going to do a high end or low off that front end just to have more control.
14:34And a crew new to heavy recovery.
14:37Hey, I'm still learning every day of my life.
14:39If you ain't learning, you might as well get dying.
14:42John's team...
14:45...starts dragging the wreck up to the road.
14:51We're close.
14:57It's coming up nice now.
14:59But as they reach the shoulder...
15:02Hey, watch out behind you, boys.
15:04...they're up against a live lane.
15:08Hey, he just needs to hold it long enough for me to get my ass over more.
15:13Jesse's 16-ton squeezes in to take the weight.
15:18Can't quit now.
15:20We're at the spot.
15:21We're at that spot.
15:22Can't quit.
15:23Get her up here.
15:25I'm going to get out of the way here.
15:28Now Elsa can make room...
15:30...so he'll definitely fight us.
15:32...for the arrival of a tilting trailer.
15:35We've got about an hour left to be off the road.
15:39As darkness falls, their window to finish the recovery is closing.
15:45We're at the point where we just got to get this thing pulled up onto the trailer.
15:50But the wreck may not handle another pull.
15:54It's definitely not in good shape.
15:56Right now, my biggest concern here would be just the structure is gone completely.
16:03That's a hell of a park jump.
16:08Both lanes are blocked.
16:10Everyone's stopped.
16:1130 minutes west of Revelstoke...
16:14As far forward as possible.
16:16Highway 1 is shut down.
16:19They're just trying to clear the highway.
16:21It's all hang out.
16:23...while MSA quickly repositions for their next pull.
16:28Okay, get me hooked up in the front now.
16:30We're going to get the moose on the front end of the truck.
16:33The 50 on the back end of the trailer.
16:35And the 40 TV kind of in the middle.
16:39You know, jackknife.
16:40Then it'll come.
16:43With lines from the 35-ton pulling the tractor, the deck truck on the drives, and the 50-ton pulling
16:52the trailer,
16:53they'll jackknife the semi to haul it up the bank onto the rope.
17:00Because most of the weight in the trailer is at the front,
17:03we're able to jackknife the tractor and essentially make a 90-degree angle with the tractor and the trailer.
17:09Going good.
17:10Even if we were to let go, it's not going to go anywhere.
17:13That's it.
17:14Oh, yeah.
17:17Pretty sure the road's closed.
17:19But as the jackknife pole starts showing progress...
17:26We've got an ambulance running hot on the highway.
17:29How far is that ambulance run?
17:33Word comes of an approaching ambulance.
17:36The pressure is on.
17:38We don't want to hold the ambulance.
17:42Boom up. Boom up.
17:45Just as the wreck presses the road...
17:49The ambulance is coming up on you pretty hard here, buddy.
17:56Yo, that ambulance is here!
17:59This recovery is important, but somebody's life is in danger.
18:03Slide your thing over if you can.
18:06Kaljeet, take that line off!
18:09It doesn't matter what.
18:10We have to get this ambulance to go.
18:11Hey, Kaljeet!
18:12Drop it, drop it, drop it, drop it!
18:14We have no choice.
18:16Got it!
18:18Boom down!
18:19Boom down!
18:20Boom down!
18:21Boom down!
18:24Boom in!
18:25On Highway 1...
18:26Yo, hurry up.
18:28...with their recovery...
18:30Wait, wait!
18:31...perched on the precipice...
18:33Oh, my God.
18:35Yeah, you can come up, though.
18:36You can come creep up right here.
18:38...MSA must pause...
18:39Kaljeet, back me up here.
18:41Yeah.
18:42...to make way for an ambulance.
18:45Thank you. Have a safe night.
18:47Now that the first responders have passed through the recovery scene, it's time to get our trucks back positioned.
18:55Take this line, I'll do this line.
18:57Yeah.
18:58They reattach their lines to the rest.
19:02Go.
19:03Go on.
19:06As traffic is backing up...
19:09We have a lot of people waiting on us in both directions, and they can't go anywhere until we open
19:14the highway.
19:17Okay, watch your face.
19:18Yeah, give her.
19:21Give her! Give her! Give her! Give her! Give her!
19:23The moose and deck truck are pulling the tractor.
19:26Almost there.
19:28It's working. We're almost there. We're going to get this thing out.
19:32Kouji, how's she looking?
19:33Good.
19:34Give her!
19:36In recovery work, there's always pressure.
19:39Hold it!
19:40And you've got to get it out of there as quick as possible.
19:43It's hitting perfectly on the asphalt.
19:45With traffic still stopped...
19:47Any idea how long it's going to be down?
19:49...and their 15-minute closure window done.
19:53Should be clear shortly, hopefully.
19:57They work quickly to open a lane.
20:00Just drop it. Let me move my truck forward.
20:05Sam will use moose.
20:08Okay, hook one of my lines up. I'm just going to drag this thing.
20:12Tell him to drive.
20:14To drag the rest of the wreck onto the road.
20:22I say just unhook the tractor right here.
20:25Okay, sure.
20:28Get this one lane open for alternating traffic,
20:31or we're going to hook up and get out of here.
20:34MSA clears the far lane
20:36and traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway...
20:40They're backing it up.
20:41No, we're moving now up here.
20:43...is finally rolling again.
20:47The wreck is out.
20:48We have a proper environmental team lined up
20:51to come clean up the fuel spill.
20:53Go up!
20:57We're going to get out of here.
20:57We're going to get out of here.
20:57Like I said, we'll be home in time for dinner tomorrow.
21:01Not tonight.
21:04It was a tough job, and it was dirty, but we did it.
21:10At the end of the day, we got the job done,
21:13so everybody's happy.
21:15Teamwork makes the dream work.
21:16Yeah.
21:18They're getting ready to go, yeah?
21:21What are you going to have a good night?
21:24There's more, thank you.
21:28There are still crews working on the highways.
21:31High on the Coquihalla.
21:34Lower down.
21:35North of Merritt.
21:37Hook your line to it,
21:38and we'll start stocking it while I pull it over.
21:42Team Reliable must winch a demolished wreck
21:45onto a tilting trailer.
21:48All right, here we go.
21:50While they're pulling it up with the winch,
21:52I'm just keeping it straight on the trailer
21:54and hoping it go off a little bit better.
21:57Keep it going.
21:59But the frame is biting.
22:03Digging into the trailer.
22:06Quite a bit of load still in the front.
22:09We're fighting it a bit.
22:11And the trailer's winch is struggling.
22:14They don't have a huge winch on it.
22:19John moves in to lift the corner.
22:23So we're just going to have to assist it a little bit
22:25with 35 ton and see if we can't get it up.
22:27Well, I'm just going to hook another truck to the back
22:29now that I'm up front lifting it.
22:31Okay.
22:33Jesse moves in to secure the wreck
22:35with the 16 ton.
22:37It's not too heavy,
22:38but it's quite a mess.
22:41All right, here we go.
22:47They pull again.
22:49Just a little bit, though, at a time, right?
22:52And the wreck
22:54inches onto the tilting trailer.
22:56Okay, how's that side looking?
22:59We're doing okay.
23:01We've got an accident here.
23:03Slow her down.
23:04To speed the process up.
23:07Okay, let me unhook.
23:08Yeah.
23:10And move to the front because I can drag the front.
23:13John will try a new tactic.
23:17I'm going to hook a line up and try to drag backwards
23:22while he's winching the trailer forward.
23:25He'll pull the tilting trailer under the wreck.
23:30It's not something I've ever done.
23:33In this situation, the winch just isn't cutting it,
23:36so we've got to do what we've got to do.
23:39Trying to help.
23:46But the wreck...
23:49Hold up! Hold up!
23:51We just split.
23:52Hold on!
23:53...is at its breaking point.
23:55We're going to rip the floor right here in half.
23:58It's definitely not in good shape.
24:02Okay, suck on it a little bit.
24:06He's ripping the wheels out of it.
24:10Watch yourself!
24:14On Highway 5...
24:15What's going on, buddy?
24:17Reliables' recovery is coming apart.
24:20He's ripping the wheels out of it.
24:22But it's all part...
24:24I know.
24:24...of John's plan.
24:26Gotta love that.
24:28All right, I'll just take saw in here.
24:30I'll get rid of all these lines.
24:32Okay.
24:36In this situation, the trailer was already a write-off anyways.
24:40We're just going to rip the bogeys right out the bottom end
24:42of the floor, to hold them back separate,
24:45and it'll be a lot safer.
24:47Looks good to me.
24:48It's a pretty big learning curve.
24:50There's a couple techniques we learned today
24:51that I probably wouldn't have learned anywhere else.
24:55With the bogeys cut free...
24:57I'm going to get it ready for transport here.
25:00Lane preps the trailer.
25:03We're just going to take it down to the next exit
25:06and clean it up and get it ready to get back to our home base.
25:12The longer we're in a lane, the longer we're hazards to other drivers on the road as well.
25:17I'm just going to flop it and tow it back.
25:21Using the 16-ton...
25:23What do you want me?
25:24We're going to hook you on the front axle.
25:26...and Elsa...
25:27...on the rear...
25:29Okay, load her up.
25:31...inches from a live lane...
25:35Okay, let it off.
25:37Okay, everybody watch your heads.
25:40...John...
25:43...rolls the bogeys.
25:45Okay, hook it up.
25:47Get it out of here.
25:48Just watch behind you.
25:50I'm always concerned...
25:53...working next to a live lane.
25:57I really wish people would get the fact that we're just trying to do a job...
26:04...and get the road back open.
26:07Incoming!
26:11Accident almost happened right beside us.
26:13Oh my God!
26:15John's seen enough.
26:17Just time to get this thing loaded and get caught.
26:20And pulls his team.
26:22If you're loaded, get out of here.
26:24Thanks, boys.
26:25For the night.
26:26Yeah, you're perfect, buddy.
26:28Hard part's over, at least.
26:30Tractor, we're going to have to come back for tomorrow.
26:33Pretty good towing.
26:48The next day, 300 kilometers southwest in the Fraser Valley...
26:56Today, my dad wanted a day off from towing.
27:00Quiring Towing's Big Green is on the move.
27:03Told me to take his record.
27:05We've got a small project.
27:06But it's Al's son, Kerry Quiring, behind the wheel.
27:11Not every day is a tow day.
27:13It's been very sporadic.
27:15So we do get creative with the work that we are finding.
27:19Today's job brings him to a surprising location in Hope.
27:24Looks like he's driving Al's truck today.
27:26As Kerry arrives at the Jamie Davis yard.
27:31Today, we have a small job helping take a cement drum off of a truck that he has to tow.
27:36The concrete truck took significant damage when the driver rolled it.
27:42How you doing?
27:43Good, man.
27:44Good.
27:44Nice to see you.
27:45Our families have been competition since birth.
27:49Competitors for decades.
27:51These three bolts on both sides.
27:54Okay.
27:55Today is a team-up between the two legendary towing families.
28:00Can't recall a job I've actually worked alongside with Jamie.
28:04Take that hydraulic tank off.
28:06Mm-hmm.
28:08And here he is helping me to help my customer.
28:11It's going to be a good day.
28:13Okay.
28:14We just help each other out and it's a good, positive environment.
28:19Kerry will disconnect the drum.
28:21And then we'll just wrap a chain somehow.
28:24I've got big straps.
28:26Which is filled with hardened cement.
28:29I'm going by how...
28:31Dad's got a diagram on the tow truck.
28:33Oh, does he?
28:34Yeah.
28:36We estimate the weight of that to be around 55,000 pounds.
28:41The hardest part is getting out of that hopper.
28:43Is it?
28:44It takes a special machine to lift a load this heavy.
28:49Pretty big weight there, 55,000 pounds.
28:52So it's not a light load what's going on there.
28:56Jamie's rolling out his newest secret weapon.
29:05A Kershaw railway wrecker, he's named Chromio.
29:12In the last few years, I've been buying older railway wreckers.
29:18If you put a railway wrecked beside a rotator, they just outlift and outwork the rotator every day of the
29:25week.
29:26Today, Jamie's newest iron will be put to the test.
29:32I don't think I've lifted a cement drum loaded before.
29:36So this is a first for me, and it's a first for Chromio.
29:40If it works, it works.
29:43If it don't, well, you've got egg on your face.
29:50In hope, Jamie positions his newest railway wrecker.
30:01It looks good, though, Jamie.
30:04Pretty looking crane, so we call it Chromio.
30:06Chromio?
30:07Yeah.
30:11Chromio is Jamie's second railway wrecker.
30:14We need the paint job.
30:16We're going to look Krusty.
30:17Last season, he added Krusty and its 125-ton lift capacity to his fleet.
30:22Go down.
30:24Okay.
30:25I guess we're good to go.
30:29Chromio is even more powerful, with a capacity of 130 tons.
30:36This machine's pretty cool.
30:38Even Jamie's son, James, has come out to help with the inaugural job.
30:44It's got high lifting capacity, probably the highest we have, so it's good to test it out.
30:51Lifting the 55,000-pound cement drum will be its first test.
30:58Chromio can lift 130 tons or 260,000 pounds.
31:02So get this off for this side.
31:05Really is the perfect job for Chromio.
31:09But first, they need to balance the machine.
31:12Little ones here, big ones on that end.
31:15Jamie's newest hire, Maxim Chamberlain Norman, is also training on Chromio.
31:21It's the best place.
31:22One pad on this side, one pad on that side.
31:25If I can do the job here, I can do it everywhere else.
31:29We just have to balance it a little.
31:32They raise the crane.
31:34We've got to make sure we get it really close to level.
31:37And level the legs for stability.
31:40Yeah, right there.
31:41Okay, now shoot her down.
31:44So I got the three bolts off.
31:46With the drum detached.
31:49On the hook, James.
31:51They rig straps for the lift.
31:53Okay.
31:54This is like a big egg.
31:56And the challenges really are to try to find the right lifting points.
32:00Then we'll pass you this, sir James.
32:02You reach.
32:03Pull it through.
32:05Each strap has a capacity of 80,000 pounds.
32:11Okay, pull the slack.
32:12Rigging has to be just right to make this happen and to make it safe.
32:17Okay.
32:21Yeah, we're ready.
32:23Good to go?
32:24Yeah.
32:27Lift off, Jamie.
32:32You looking okay?
32:34It's a bunch of weight.
32:39Yes, sir.
32:43Nice.
32:43With the slippery 55,000-pound drum suspended 20 feet in the air.
32:51Stand right here.
32:53Okay.
32:53And just make sure I don't hit that, okay?
32:56All right.
32:57Just look at my mirror.
32:58Terry uses Big Green.
33:01Get ready to run.
33:03To move the cement truck.
33:07Out from underneath.
33:17Yeah, I'm back, James.
33:22I'm feeling my oats right now, you know?
33:23Like, I'm feeling pretty positive.
33:27Go down.
33:30Once I'm lowering that down and we're putting it down on the downage,
33:34it's like, yeah, this is a good machine.
33:38It went as planned.
33:42With Romeo here and Super James.
33:46Jamie is great ear to ear.
33:49You know, I don't blame him.
33:52Jamie has always loved his toys.
33:55If he can get it up all the way and latch it even.
33:58The last task is getting the truck ready to be towed.
34:03Beautiful.
34:04You know, he's seen me grow up.
34:06It's nice to have that friendship.
34:09Yes, at the end of the day, we are competitors,
34:11but I appreciate Jamie's help.
34:15Terry will come back for the drum another day.
34:18All right, you're good to go?
34:19Yeah, thank you, Jamie.
34:20Yeah, no problem.
34:21I'll click the gate for you.
34:22Yeah.
34:22It's a successful team-up between Jamie Davis and Quiring Towing.
34:29And for Jamie, another bold move into the world of railway wreckers.
34:35The advantages of having a railway wrecker is you have a more economical machine,
34:41huge lifting capacity.
34:43They're a good tool for us in our toolbox.
34:51Not a bad day.
34:53An hour and a half north.
34:55There you go.
34:57John Dodds is back on highway 5.
35:00Getting this tractor pulled out of here.
35:03With team reliable.
35:05We got the new guys back out today.
35:07They're going to be able to finish the job that they started.
35:14Okay, hold the weight.
35:15Tighten up.
35:19I'm just going to get Dwayne to hook the front end and drag it over.
35:25Now, in the safety of daylight,
35:28John leads his team to wrap up the tough recovery.
35:33All righty, tighten her up.
35:37Come on, baby.
35:40Come on, baby.
35:42I'm proud of the guys.
35:44I just don't want it to roll, right?
35:46For being out here and doing their best.
35:49Let yours out.
35:53Come on, hook ya.
35:56Reliable's two-day recovery is nearly done.
36:01So, that went pretty good all in all.
36:03Tractor's out of the ditch.
36:05And we're out of here.
36:09John did a great coordinating it.
36:11I'm really proud of what my team accomplished.
36:13All righty, guys.
36:14We'll see you at the yard.
36:15I think they did a great job.
36:17Yeah, good job to you.
36:18Reliable.
36:20Thank you much.
36:23Be safe out there.
36:29Six hours north.
36:31That storm's supposed to come in here a little bit later, huh?
36:36That's what I heard.
36:39An auto two-ton heads out to a recovery on Highway 97.
36:44We're going to try and get this car down as quick as we can.
36:48With operator Kyle Langlois.
36:51We're calling for 10 centimeters of snow tonight.
36:54So, we want to try and get out of there before that snowstorm starts coming in.
36:59Following in a deck truck.
37:00A small SUV flipped off the road down a very big embankment.
37:07Kyle's older brother, Paul.
37:10Highway 97 north of Cornell.
37:13That is an ugly road.
37:15If it gets weather, it changes fast.
37:19Paul is back after taking a break from the towing industry.
37:24Business has been good.
37:25Paul's come back.
37:26He wants to try and give it a shot again, see how it goes for himself.
37:31It helps us big time.
37:34They're setting up the cones for recovery.
37:38Pulling up on scene.
37:40We notice the car, it's quite a ways down in the ditch.
37:48It's a little steeper than the pictures that I got, so it's time to get back in shape for the
37:54winter.
37:55We deal with so much seriousness out there when we're in an environment like we are in this scene.
38:02And, you know, we can play around a little bit more.
38:05Good?
38:06All right.
38:08That hill is so steep.
38:11I just want to throw a hook on that thing and we get her out of there.
38:21Ooh, the cable stuck on me.
38:24That just about became interesting.
38:26My brother and I get to work together.
38:28It's almost like our childhood comes out in us sometimes.
38:31The cable almost put me on my butt there.
38:34It's going to be an interesting little recovery.
38:52The condition of the car, do you think there's no way this person's going to be okay?
38:57You can see just on the edge of the bank where she came off.
39:01She would have done a barrel roll in the air.
39:07She's very lucky to walk away from something like that.
39:14They rank low for a reverse roll.
39:18This side I rigged down to the tire.
39:21The lowest point that it's got right now.
39:27You good?
39:29All right.
39:30You going back up or around?
39:31I'm going up.
39:32Going up?
39:33You going to stay down here to watch it just in case I need to re-hook?
39:36Yeah, I can do that.
39:37Okay.
39:38Kyle heads up the slope.
39:41Oh, this is going to be fun.
39:43To operate from the road.
39:45It's called a reverse roll.
39:47We roll it the other way away from us rather than rolling it towards us.
39:58And the roll reveals more carnage of the crash.
40:06What do you think if we put both on the front, Paul?
40:08It would be a good idea because you've got a tree down in front of it.
40:13That way it will come up and over.
40:15Just disconnect the green one and leave that chain hooked up.
40:19Yeah, yeah.
40:22Let's see how he does here.
40:32It's like a battlefield out there on some accidents.
40:36He's reminded of why he took a break from the family business five years ago.
40:43I was first on call for fatalities, rescuing bodies.
40:50I've seen things that you just don't want to see.
40:54Your body just says, time's up.
40:59You can only deal with so much.
41:05Suffering from PTSD.
41:09I had a breakdown.
41:15Paul stepped away from towing.
41:20Coming back, I really had to put my problems aside.
41:24I know they exist.
41:26They're always there.
41:28That's what the time took me to realize.
41:31Was that my problems are always going to exist.
41:35It's just now I'm able to carry on with them.
41:38And I'm happy that I can be back with the family and working again.
41:44Yeah, she's good.
41:47She's good.
41:50That pulled out really good.
41:52Kind of went the way I wanted it to go.
41:54So now I'm going to get out of the way.
41:56Paul's going to get it on the deck truck.
41:58We're going to get out of here.
42:01Last step.
42:03Paul and I both grew up doing the same thing.
42:06You know, helping Grandpa when we were younger and going out on wrecks with him.
42:10So if him and I can continue on to be able to work side-by-side and, you know, see
42:16the future together, I think it would be a pretty cool opportunity.
42:26I think this job was really good and it was nice to work with Kyle again.
42:35You did good.
42:36The car came out actually fairly smooth.
42:38So time to head back to the yard.
42:41Not like getting out.
42:43You do what you got to do to keep her going, eh?
42:46Thank you, guys.
42:50Next time on Highway Through Hell, a chain reaction.
42:54I can't believe the traffic.
42:56Puts Otto.
42:57Give it a shot.
42:58To the test.
43:00Hey.
43:01Come, come.
43:02Woo, doggy.
43:04Quirings in the quagmire.
43:06We got James in there with his boots.
43:08With an old friend.
43:09No, no, no, no, no.
43:10Hey.
43:11Boom.
43:12And reliable.
43:14Oh, I love winter.
43:15Fighting the deep freeze.
43:17The tires.
43:19Yes.
43:30Oh, my goodness.
43:31You are you.
43:31Oh, my goodness.
43:38We're going to have you.
43:38game.
43:38Oh, my goodness.
43:38Oh, my goodness.
43:40Oh, my goodness.
43:43Oh, my goodness.
43:51You
