00:02Yesterday afternoon, as you say, this man, this 31-year-old, allegedly called the Channel
00:089 newsroom in Sydney, allegedly making threats to kill, threats to cause harm, and that was
00:15something that the newsroom immediately passed on to Crimestoppers in Victoria.
00:20So obviously at that point, Victoria Police got busy, they increased their patrols in
00:26the city, they brought in the public order response team, and set about trying to locate
00:32this individual, which they did at around about 7.30 last night, he was arrested at a
00:40McDonald's restaurant in Swanston Street, Melbourne's main street.
00:44Police alleged that he had a knife on him, that's another thing that he'll be appearing
00:48in court this afternoon charged with.
00:50There's one interesting aspect to this was that the Melbourne City Council, which obviously
00:56deals very closely with police whenever there are any kind of security threats in Melbourne's
01:02central business district.
01:04Clearly the Melbourne City Council was aware of this, and in fact put out an all staff SMS
01:10message to its employees, which simply said, look, we've got information that there's a
01:15potential threat in the city, so avoid the Bourke Street area after 7pm.
01:21So that raised a few questions this morning.
01:23In fact, police were asked about this last night, and they said, look, we don't have
01:27a problem with the Melbourne City Council doing this, and the obvious follow up question is,
01:32was it necessary?
01:32Should police have given a similar kind of warning?
01:35And the answer to that was, look, if we needed to, we have the loudspeaker system, we have
01:40the SMS system.
01:41But in this case, the view of police was that there was absolutely no threat to the public,
01:46whatever.
01:47So that's where it's at at the moment, we're just waiting on that 31 year old man to have
01:52no fixed address to appear in the Magistrates Court this afternoon, where he will answer
01:56to those charges.
01:57Here we go.
