00:00Man in the moon, as I gaze out upon the sprawling expanse at his pyramid corners,
00:05I see the shimmering city lights, all five of them.
00:10But if I close my eyes to just a sliver, the lights multiply as my vision blurs.
00:17I imagine that I'm walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris, France,
00:22strolling arm-in-arm with my boyfriend, Jean-Pierre,
00:25who whispers my name, or some better-sounding name than mine,
00:30like Virginie de Maupassant, or Juliette Depardieu.
00:37Then I blink, and I'm once again Dorothy Jane Torkelson from Pyramid Corners, Oklahoma,
00:43the dream capital of the world.
00:46But I cling to the hope that all of this is about to change,
00:50for I am an entrant in the high school foreign exchange competition of Paris,
00:54and tomorrow the finalists will be announced.
00:57I doubt if I will sleep tonight as I am overwhelmed with visions of Jean-Pierre,
01:01gazing into my eyes as we sit at a sidewalk café and sip little bitty cups of coffee.
01:08Je t'aime, Jean-Pierre.
01:11Je t'aime, Virginie.
01:13You are a nutbag in every language.
01:16English, nutbag.
01:18French, nutbagage.
01:23People say God looks out for the working man
01:29Sure hope he's looking out for me
01:35These empty pockets need a helping hand
01:40Kitchen tables full of family
01:45But then the sun comes up
01:52And the moon is shining big and bright
01:58And the new day promises
02:03That everything will be alright
02:09And the new day promises
02:15That everything will be alright
02:29Did the morning exchange election committee call?
02:32Did they stop by?
02:32Am I on my way to Paris?
02:34Boy, I hope so.
02:36I mean that in the nicest way.
02:39I cannot stay in the suspense.
02:41No one's called yet, but I'm sure they'll be calling soon.
02:43Unless I'm not even a finalist, in which case they wouldn't call.
02:46And I will languish in despair in my room
02:48And never come out for the rest of my pitiful existence.
02:51Either way, I can't lose.
02:52Mama, who's Anne's not torturing your sister?
02:55But she's so easy.
02:56Dorothy Jane, I'll learn this song for you if you get to go to France.
03:01Aloha, gente, aloha.
03:04Aloha, gente, plume right.
03:07Well, thank you, Mary Sue, but what if I don't get to go to France?
03:11Oh, beautiful, for spacious skies, for emboids of grain.
03:20Mama, do you think I have a chance?
03:22I mean, do you think I could really get to go?
03:23Oh, Dorothy Jane, you're a good student,
03:25and I personally feel you'd be a wonderful representative,
03:28but I don't want to get your hopes up.
03:30Oh, get them up.
03:32Okay.
03:33You've got at least as good a chance as anybody else.
03:36Get them up higher.
03:38Bye, sweetheart.
03:39Bring us back some cheese.
03:42You live your whole life,
03:43and everything you want comes down to a single moment.
03:47Waiting for a single phone call.
03:50And the moment could be here.
03:54Any moment.
03:56Ring!
03:58I'm not going anywhere.
04:00What a devastating blow to me.
04:04This is it.
04:05This is my whole life.
04:06You going to pick up the phone?
04:07I'm scared.
04:09Hello?
04:10No, this is my fan.
04:11Who's this?
04:12Wait a minute.
04:13I'll check.
04:14Are you here for Ms. Addington from the Foreign Exchange Selection Committee?
04:19She's in the bathroom.
04:22Hello?
04:23Yes, this is Dorothy Jane.
04:24Hi.
04:28Uh-huh.
04:31Yes.
04:33Uh-huh.
04:41It's okay, sweetie.
04:42You'll have other chances.
04:46It's me.
04:48I'm one of the three finalists.
04:50I am in there.
04:52Yay!
04:57I'm a finalist.
04:58Mama, I'm going to Paris, and my dreams can take flight.
05:01Dorothy Jane, this is your mother from Ground Control.
05:04There's still two other finalists.
05:07Let us not count our poulets before they are hatched.
05:12America, America, I will win.
05:18I am going to Paris.
05:20My grades are excellent, my social skills are refined,
05:22and I want out of this town more than anybody.
05:25And I want you out.
05:27And the final determining factor is a one-on-one interview with the selection committee.
05:31And I will charm them.
05:33Sure you will, honey.
05:34Just don't make that face.
05:36I'm so happy.
05:37I can't wait to tell everybody.
05:39I'm going to Paris.
05:45Notre bagage.
05:50J'ai faim, I have hunger.
05:53J'ai soif, I have thirst.
05:55Je m'appelle, I am called,
05:58Vergnée de Montpessant.
06:01You know, Dorothy Jane,
06:03I say this not in an attempt to rain on your parade,
06:06but you are still one of three candidates.
06:08Here's your competition, Dorothy Jane.
06:11I want the fond de la patrie.
06:14Da-da-da-da-da.
06:15That's all I know.
06:17For sure, mademoiselle Dorothy Jane.
06:22Don't you ever do that again.
06:24Dorothy Jane?
06:26But it's European.
06:28It's continental.
06:29It's the way you're the French finalist.
06:32Kirby Scroggins?
06:34Absolutement.
06:36Really?
06:37Oh, that's wonderful news, Kirby.
06:39I'm so happy for you.
06:41Father, Kirby Scroggins is my competition.
06:43Congratulations, Kirby.
06:45Dorothy Jane, that is a true sign of sportsmanship,
06:48and I am proud of you.
06:49No way am I going to lose to Kirby Scroggins.
06:52I knew she was going to say that.
06:54She's just a little bit competitive.
06:56That's all right, Ms. Torkelson.
06:58I accept the challenge.
07:01And may the best finalists win.
07:03You touch me again, I'll hurt you.
07:05That kind of rejection would have crushed the old Kirby Scroggins.
07:08But when I get back from France,
07:10I'm going to be the new Kirby Scroggins.
07:13Capi Scroggins.
07:15Debonair bon vivant citizen of the world.
07:18And when I get back from Paris,
07:20you're going to want me.
07:22Oh, puke.
07:23You're not going to Paris.
07:24Paris, they're going to choose somebody sophisticated.
07:28That's my sister.
07:29Somebody poised.
07:30That's my sister.
07:31They're going to choose Dream of Donathan.
07:35Hello, Dorothy Jane.
07:37Hello, Kirby.
07:38Hi.
07:38Hi.
07:39I just learned that you both made finalists,
07:41and I wanted to tell you congratulations.
07:43They're going to send my sister to Paris
07:45because she's sophisticated and poised.
07:48And I'm the other finalist.
07:50You're dead.
08:04You know I've never been outside Oklahoma.
08:07I'm sorry?
08:08My entire universe exists within the intersection
08:10of State Highway 25 and Farm Route 2.
08:13And the idea of sending my daughter
08:15halfway around the world to live with strangers
08:17and eat snails is deeply unsettling.
08:21You don't want Dorothy Jane to go to Paris?
08:23Oh, I think it will be very nice for her to go to Paris.
08:27Paris will expand her horizons
08:29and give her culture and sophistication,
08:32all the things she dreams of.
08:36And then at the end of the semester,
08:38they'll send her back to Pyramid Corners, Oklahoma.
08:43And how are you going to keep them down on the farm
08:46after they've seen Paris?
08:48Uh-huh.
08:50Of course, I don't even know why I'm worried
08:52about when she comes back.
08:53I don't know if I can even get her there.
08:56Brought in the school pay for the trip?
08:58Yeah, but she's going to have expenses.
09:00And I can't send her across the ocean
09:02with no money in her pocket.
09:05Then why did you let her apply?
09:07Oh, because she talks about Paris
09:10like Paris is heaven.
09:13And now she actually has a chance to go to heaven?
09:15What kind of mother would I be to say no?
09:19You know, I almost got to Paris once myself,
09:23Mrs. Torkelson.
09:24You did?
09:261944.
09:27Got as far as a little town called Cherbourg.
09:29Me and a bunch of guys I didn't know.
09:31And a bunch of other guys I didn't know
09:33trying to kill us.
09:35I bet your mother didn't want you to go either.
09:38Well, it was anything but heaven,
09:39I can tell you that.
09:41I remember the tanks and the mortar fire,
09:44and at night, the whole city lit up bright
09:47with the explosions.
09:50But the one thing I kept thinking,
09:53besides, please, God, don't let me die,
09:56was that this was some beautiful country
09:59we were blowing up.
10:00And I promised myself that someday
10:03I would come back there and enjoy its beauty.
10:10I regret that I never did that.
10:13So you think I should let her go?
10:16Oh, that's not for me to say.
10:21You just never know
10:22if a chance like this is going to come around again.
10:41Hey.
10:42Hello.
10:42My name's Leonard Wheeler.
10:44I was just driving by,
10:45and I couldn't help but notice your house.
10:47Oh, if you're here to sell me something,
10:48then I'm sure I can't afford it in any way.
10:49All my kids are sick.
10:50No, no, actually, I'm an antique dealer.
10:53I'm here to buy.
10:54Oh.
10:55Well, come on in.
10:58My name's Millicent Torkelson.
11:00Ooh, you're here all the way from New York City?
11:03Yes, I specialize in the unusual,
11:05and in looking around,
11:06perhaps I've stumbled onto something here.
11:10Well, perhaps you have,
11:12but all our stuff has been collected
11:14through many generations of Torkelsons.
11:17And it would be like selling off the family heritage
11:19to let any of these things go.
11:21I understand how you feel, Mrs. Torkelson,
11:23and that's why I come all the way out
11:24to places like this,
11:25because people take such good care
11:27of these family treasures.
11:29Well, like that 1880s clawfoot sofa, for one.
11:32That is exactly what I'm looking for.
11:34I mean, that is a lovely example
11:36of Victorian oversized opulence.
11:39Oh, well, I really don't know about that.
11:41Well, I do, and that's why I'm prepared
11:43to pay a very fair price.
11:45And everybody can use a little extra money.
11:48Oh, well, not us.
11:50Well, would you at least think about it?
11:52I pay cash.
11:54Look, I'll come back later in the week,
11:56and if you've had a change of heart,
11:58I'll take a closer look
12:00at some of your charming objet d'art.
12:03Well, I'll think about it, Mr. Wheeler.
12:05Yeah, and you think about that sofa.
12:08Have a nice day.
12:09Oh, yeah.
12:22You can't wash the mud pot of hands
12:24in the seat, Mary Sue.
12:25Now it's all stopped up
12:26and full of rocks and mud.
12:28I was making French souffle for you.
12:32You were supposed to be watching her.
12:33Boy, take your eyes off a kid for one second.
12:37Dorothy Jane, look who came to see me.
12:40Dream of Donathan, what are you doing here?
12:42Don't leave.
12:43I want to show you what I can do.
12:44Be careful.
12:45Dorothy Jane's in a real bad mood,
12:47and she might make you cry.
12:51Sorry, Mary Sue.
12:52I didn't mean to make you cry.
12:53Too late.
12:54You've had it.
12:58Gee, I hope I'm not catching you
13:00at a bad time, Dorothy Jane.
13:02Bad time, here at my house.
13:04No such thing.
13:05In that case, you'll be happy to hear
13:07the most interesting news.
13:09What?
13:10This year, the school has decided
13:11to have family interviews
13:13at the homes of the three finalists.
13:15They want to come here and meet my family?
13:17Mm-hmm.
13:20Wait a minute.
13:21I think it's right.
13:23Whether or not I go to Paris hinges
13:25on the impression my family makes.
13:26That's right.
13:28My mother's already planning
13:29a little soiree in their honor.
13:31Kirby, of course, is having a fish fry.
13:33Trey, a Mary can.
13:35Oui.
13:36So, do you think your family
13:38will plan anything special, Dorothy Jane?
13:41Oui.
13:43Hey, Dreamer,
13:44bet you didn't even know
13:45I could play the fiddle.
13:51All right, Dorothy Jane.
13:53Nobody makes me cry
13:54and gets away with it.
14:01I'll send you a postcard, Dorothy Jane.
14:03Avril.
14:12Got any sixes?
14:13Nope.
14:14You're not supposed to say nope.
14:16You're supposed to say go fish.
14:18I want to say no.
14:19You can't play the game this way.
14:21I want to play.
14:22I want to play.
14:23I can't play with her.
14:25Sexist.
14:28Okay, here's the deal.
14:29You're going to take everybody
14:30to Frosty King
14:31and you're going to keep them there
14:32for the next hour and a half.
14:33And then you're going to call
14:34and see if the Home Review Committee
14:35has left yet.
14:36And why should I do this for you?
14:38Because you're the second oldest
14:39Stephen Floyd.
14:40And if I go to Paris,
14:41that'll make you the oldest.
14:42And you'll get to be in charge
14:44of everybody.
14:44The power is unbelievable.
14:46Who do you think you're talking to?
14:49Okay, okay.
14:49Here's five bucks.
14:51Come on, little ones.
14:52We're going to Frosty King.
14:54All right.
14:55Yeah.
14:56You going to go with us, Dorothy Jane?
14:59Um, I can't go right now,
15:01but you're just going over there
15:02to Frosty King and stay
15:03as long as you want.
15:06We got busted.
15:07I believe we have VIP interview guests
15:10arriving momentarily
15:11and nobody is going anywhere.
15:13We are going to be here
15:14in full support of our candidate.
15:16Now, everybody go clean up.
15:17Oh, come on.
15:18Move, move, move.
15:22You know, Dorothy Jane,
15:23I'm really very hurt.
15:26Hurt?
15:27Why?
15:28You didn't offer to send me down
15:29to the Frosty King
15:30for any ice cream.
15:32Maybe you were planning on
15:33shipping me off to a movie
15:34or maybe just locking me up
15:36in the closet.
15:37Aw.
15:38You know, I have this terrible feeling
15:40that what you're trying to do
15:41is unload your dear Torkelson clan
15:44before the Home Review Committee
15:45gets here
15:46because you're afraid
15:48we might spoil your chances
15:49of going to Paris.
15:51Spoil my chances?
15:54Because you're embarrassed by us.
15:57Embarrassed?
15:59How could you...
16:01I would never...
16:08I'll go start laying out the buffet.
16:25Man in the Moon,
16:26I'm a guilty little crumb.
16:29I've done a terrible thing
16:30and I feel awful
16:31because I love my family.
16:34But deep down in my heart
16:35I also know
16:36that they're going to embarrass me.
16:38I mean,
16:39I can love them
16:40and still be honest, can't I?
16:43But let's face it.
16:45I'm not going to Paris
16:46and my aspirations
16:48are going to splatter
16:49like a bug
16:49on the windshield of life.
16:51Dorothy Jane,
16:52I want to know
16:53how come I make you embarrassed.
16:55Mama told you that?
16:56I heard you talking.
16:57Chuckie Lee, I love you.
16:59You know I love you.
17:00You're off the subject.
17:02I want to go to Paris.
17:03Why?
17:04What's Paris got
17:04that Pyramid Corners hasn't got?
17:06The Champs-Elysees,
17:07the Louvre,
17:08the Arc de Triomphe.
17:09We don't have those?
17:10No.
17:11Then we don't need those
17:12because we got Frosty King
17:13and I think you should be proud
17:15of where you come from.
17:16Oklahoma,
17:17the land of Will Rogers
17:18and Oklahoma Sooners football
17:19with more horses per capita
17:21than any other state of the union.
17:23I thought that was Texas.
17:24Well, you're wrong, Dorothy Jane.
17:25You're wrong about a lot of things.
17:27O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A.
17:30Oklahoma's okay.
17:31Chuckie Lee.
17:50The house looks real nice, Mama.
17:53Thank you, Dorothy Jane.
17:56Mama.
17:57What?
17:58I'm sorry.
18:00For what?
18:01For putting myself first
18:02and hurting everybody's feelings.
18:04You feel bad about that?
18:06I feel so bad
18:08that when the Home Review Committee
18:09gets here,
18:10I'm going to tell them
18:11I don't deserve to go to France
18:12and I'm going to ask them
18:13to pull my name out of consideration.
18:15You don't have to do that.
18:17Oh, thank God.
18:22I'll get the tea.
18:23You get the door.
18:24Okay.
18:33Hello.
18:34Hello.
18:35Are the others coming later?
18:37Others?
18:38Oh, then it's only you.
18:40Please come in.
18:40I'm Dorothy Jane.
18:44Would you care for some food or drink?
18:46No, no, no.
18:47I'll just get down to business
18:48if that's all right.
18:49Oh, that'd be fine.
18:50Please have a seat.
18:53Mother, look who's here.
18:54Oh, hey.
18:56Hello.
18:58So,
18:59as regards this little beauty...
19:01Yes, well,
19:02after careful consideration,
19:03I'm afraid we're just not interested.
19:05Mother,
19:05I thought you realized
19:05I was being insincere.
19:07Well, would you at least
19:08let me make an offer?
19:09Make her an offer.
19:11I went through my records
19:12and I checked up
19:14on this gorgeous little piece
19:15over here
19:15and I just want to say
19:16that if we can agree on terms,
19:18I'll throw her in the back
19:19of the truck right now.
19:21Chuck,
19:21I thought I was going Air France.
19:24Dorothy Jane,
19:25this is Mr. Wheeler.
19:27He's an antique dealer
19:28from New York City
19:29and he's talking about
19:30buying our couch.
19:33Oh, I'm sorry.
19:34I thought you were here
19:35to decide whether or not
19:36I should go to Paris.
19:37I think you should go.
19:40Oh, thank you, Mr. Wheeler.
19:42So how come
19:43you're selling our couch?
19:44Oh, I haven't decided
19:45if I am yet.
19:47Yeah, your mother
19:48wanted to think about it
19:49because everybody needs
19:50a little extra money
19:51now and then.
19:52Well, this couch
19:53has been in our family
19:54since before I was born.
19:55Honey,
19:56since before I was born.
19:58Then why would you think
19:58of selling it now?
20:00What's happening now
20:01that would make you
20:01change your mind?
20:02Nothing's happening now.
20:03Except that maybe
20:04I'm going to France.
20:07This is spending money
20:08for me, isn't it, Mama?
20:09Oh, Dorothy Jane,
20:11don't you have
20:11such an extraordinarily
20:12large ego
20:13that you think
20:13the whole world
