Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in Congo highlights challenge of containing rare strain

Nita Bharti, associate professor of biology at Penn State, studies Ebola and says the death toll is probably much higher than we currently believe because it took longer to identify the outbreak and that allowed it to spread faster.

00:00A recent Ebola outbreak has killed more than 100 people in Congo, and experts say there's no vaccine for this
00:07strain.
00:07According to scientists, Ebola is highly contagious and can be contracted via bodily fluids such as vomit, blood, or semen.
00:16The disease it causes is rare but severe and often fatal.
00:20The Ebola virus is actually a group of viruses.
00:23It is a genus of viruses with a number of species in it.
00:30And so there's about five-ish viruses, we'll say.
00:34And three of them cause most of the human disease that you've heard about.
00:40One of those is currently transmitting and causing an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
00:48While some species in the Ebola family have vaccines, some do not.
00:53According to the Center for Disease Control CDC, there are four species that causes illness in people.
01:00Essentially, what's being done is really, really solid boots-on-the-ground epidemiology.
01:06So contact tracing, case management, isolation, and quarantine.
01:12There are efforts to determine the cross-immunity between the Zaire strain and the Bundibuccio strain.
01:19So determining how effective the vaccine we have might be during this outbreak.
01:27And really trying to contain the outbreak from spreading further.
01:32Health care workers and family members caring for sick patients face the highest risks, according to experts.
01:38Scientists say it can be difficult to identify Ebola at first because early symptoms mimic those of common diseases such
01:46as malaria or flu.
01:48One of the biggest problems with this outbreak is that it's taken a while to determine what it was.
01:54What was causing these illnesses and deaths.
01:57And that means that we're behind what would be an exponential curve of transmission.
02:02So that's why the outbreak was so large when it was first announced.
02:06According to some health experts, the death toll is probably much higher than we currently believe
02:11because it took longer to identify the outbreak and that allowed it to spread even faster.
02:16And generally coming to the outbreak.
02:16So we're, uh, the Zaire spa and the McDonaldi use the outbreak to eliminate stealth.
02:17We're trying to promote emotional champion.
02:18We're thankful, but, um, FROM SAC in our death tolls will continue to consider
