00:01As Eastern DR Congo battles a new Ebola outbreak, rumors and mistrust continues to complicate
00:08the response. In Ituru province, many residents are turning to traditional remedies, reflecting
00:14the uncertainty and fear that have spread alongside the deadly virus.
00:23The rumors I hear are that people don't believe Ebola exists and now people are afraid to
00:28go to the hospital. Once they're sick, they prefer to stay home and if they have to die,
00:34they want to die at home because if someone dies in the hospital, they assume it was Ebola
00:38and take the body themselves to bury it as they see fit. Families no longer have the freedom
00:44to bury their loved ones as they used to.
00:50Strict Ebola barrier rules are limiting traditional funeral rites, leaving many confused and in
00:56the dark.
01:01We don't know what kind of disease Ebola is. We're astonished. We don't even know what
01:05the body of someone who died of Ebola looks like. We only see images on our phones and
01:11people are creating doctored images. People are editing pictures of people who supposedly
01:16died of Ebola.
01:21Forced rumors continue to spread with some claiming Ebola was invented for funding or that vaccines
01:26are used to infect people.
01:30I won't take a vaccine. It's not clear. I've heard rumors that at the hospital, there are vaccines
01:36that are actually designed to infect people with Ebola. So instead of getting the medicine,
01:42we get the virus. That's what we know and that's why I won't take a vaccine. Nor will I allow
01:47any
01:48member of my family to take one.
01:54The Ebola outbreak continues to grow, with DR Congo reporting 363 cases and 62 deaths.
02:02Neighboring Uganda has also confirmed 15 cases, including one fatality.
02:06Alright.
02:07Thanks a lot.
