Why Teachable Moments Are the Reason Jayden Daniels Should Play In the Preseason

Grant and Danny talk about the value of teachable moments that a rookie can get in the preseason, and not just on the field itself.

00:00You want a more timely and relevant in terms of, you know, the lay of the land in the NFL today,

00:07three-game preseason schedule comp. C.J. Stroud was the number two pick last year and had an

00:11unbelievable season. In week one of the preseason, he came out and went on one drive, was 2 of 14

00:15for 13 yards and threw a pick. They got him out of the game. Second drive, C.J. Stroud,

00:20a second preseason game rather, a couple of drives, I think it was two or three,

00:23went 7 of 12 for 60 yards, pretty substantial play time for him. And then he actually did play

00:28in the third preseason week last year, very minimally on national TV, went 2 of 4 for 16

00:34yards and a touchdown. So he played in all three preseason games, barely at all, four passes in the

00:39first and the third, but he played a lot in the second. That's the most recent comp of a number

00:43two pick. And the Texans weren't saying, well, we got to sit this guy and just get him to week one.

00:49They were going, let's let him make some mistakes. He threw a couple interceptions and barely any

00:53passes. He got sacked, lost 18 yards. I was reading on a sack at one point in time. Like,

00:58good. What's the line from Sandlot? Uh, get in trouble, get your knees dirty. You know,

01:04the mom's yelling at the kid, like, go make a terrible decision, man. Let's learn something.

01:08Yeah. These teachable moments. Yeah. So I, I probably do a little less than that, but it'd

01:12still be some, it'd still be some, cause to me, there's more, there's a little bit less value in

01:16defense, not game planning for you, you know, vanilla play call or, or whatever. Nobody's

01:21really trying to do anything other than just to get your feet wet. But I would go through the

01:24pregame warmup. The, this is what it looks like when I'm signaling in the play, uh, in, in an NFL

01:29stadium with the lights on kind of to your point, I would go through the exercise. That's a great

01:33point. I think that stuff's super valuable too. That to me is why I would do it more than more,

01:37more so than getting a rep, you know, and obviously a mistake gets made a teacher.

01:40Well, what happens? That's great. But you can't count on those in preseason when you're on a

01:43pitch count. If good things happen, that's great too. That's my point is that you can't count on

01:47anything. And when you have a limited sample like that, it could just be 10 plays. Nothing

01:51descript happens and we don't remember it. And we move on every time you get a snap and read a

01:55defense and run from a defender. Like every play is a teachable moment. In my opinion, when you've

02:01never had one, you will learn something from every single snap probably. But I'd be curious to see

02:19just to go through all those motions and figure out how the, the structure of, of your offense

02:25and the play calling and doing all that before you do it for real, you already got enough

02:29nerves and anxiety on your plate in week one to then be hearing the play in your helmet in a game

02:34in a loud stadium for the first time. Um, not that he didn't do some of that at LSU, but it's just

02:39different up a level with fresh voices in your ear.
